Isospin-forbidden electric-dipole capture and the $α(d,γ)^6$Li reaction

At the long-wavelength approximation, $E1$ transitions are forbidden between isospin-zero states. Hence $E1$ radiative capture is strongly hindered in reactions involving $N = Z$ nuclei but the $E1$ astrophysical $S$ factor may remain comparable to, or larger than, the $E2$ one. Theoretical expressions of the isoscalar and isovector contributions to $E1$ capture are analyzed in microscopic and three-body approaches in the context of the $α(d,γ)^6$Li reaction. The lowest non-vanishing terms of the operators are derived and the dominant contributions to matrix elements are discussed. The astrophysical $S$ factor computed with some of these contributions in a three-body $α+n+p$ model is in agreement with the recent low-energy experimental data of the LUNA collaboration. This confirms that a correct treatment of the isovector $E1$ transitions involving small isospin-one admixtures in the wave functions should be able to provide an explanation of the data without adjustable parameter. The exact-masses prescription which is often used to avoid the disappearance of the $E1$ matrix element in potential models is not founded at the microscopic level and should not be used for such reactions. The importance of capture components from an initial $S$ scattering wave is also discussed.

Updated three-body model of $^6$He $β$ decay into the $α$ + $d$ continuum

The $β$-decay process of the $^6$He halo nucleus into the $α+d$ continuum is studied in an updated three-body model. The $^6$He nucleus is described as an $α+n+n$ system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange-mesh. The shape and absolute values of the transition probability per time and energy units of new experiments are reproduced with a modified $α+d$ potential. The obtained total transition probabilities are $2.48 \times 10^{-6}$ s$^{-1}$ for the full energy region and $2.40 \times 10^{-6}$ s$^{-1}$ for the cut-off $E>150$ keV. The strong cancellation between the internal and halo parts of the $β$ decay matrix element is a challenge for future {\it ab initio} calculations.

Theoretical study of the $α+d$ $\rightarrow$ $^6$Li + $γ$ astrophysical capture process in a three-body model

The astrophysical capture process $α+d$ $\rightarrow$ $^6$Li + $γ$ is studied in a three-body model. The initial state is factorized into the deuteron bound state and the $α+d$ scattering state. The final nucleus $^6$Li(1+) is described as a three-body bound state $α+n+p$ in the hyperspherical Lagrange-mesh method. The contribution of the E1 transition operator from the initial isosinglet states to the isotriplet components of the final state is estimated to be negligible. An estimation of the forbidden E1 transition to the isosinglet components of the final state is comparable with the corresponding results of the two-body model. However, the contribution of the E2 transition operator is found to be much smaller than the corresponding estimations of the two-body model. The three-body model perfectly matches the new experimental data of the LUNA collaboration with the spectroscopic factor 2.586 estimated from the bound-state wave functions of $^6$Li and deuteron.

Spectrum of the excited $N^*$ and $Δ^*$ baryons in a relativistic chiral quark model

The spectrum of the SU(2) flavor baryons is studied in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark potential model based on the one-pion and one-gluon exchange mechanisms. It is argued that the N* and Delta* resonances strongly coupled to the pi-N channel are identified with the orbital configurations $(1S_{1/2})^2(nlj)$ with a single valence quark in the excited state (nlj). With the obtained selection rules based on the "chiral constraint", we show that it is possible to construct a schematic periodic table of baryon resonances, consistent with the experimental data and yielding no "missing resonances". A new original method for the treatment of the center of mass problem is suggested, which is based on the separation of the three-quark Dirac Hamiltonian into the parts, corresponding to the Jacobi coordinates. The numerical estimations for the energy positions of the Nucleon and Delta baryons (up to and including F-wave resonances), obtained within the field-theoretical framework by using time ordered perturbation theory, yield an overall good description of the experimental data at the level of the relativized CQM of S. Capstick and W. Roberts without any fitting parameters. The Delta(1232) is well reproduced. However, N g. s. and most of the radially excited baryon resonances (including Roper) are overestimated. Contrary, the first band of the orbitally excited baryon resonances with a negative parity are underestimated. At the same time, the second band of the orbitally excited Delta* states with the negative parity are mostly overestimated, while the N* states are close to the experimental boxes. The positive parity baryon resonances with J=5/2, 7/2 are close to the experimental data. At higher energies, where the experimental data are poor, we can extend our model schematically and predict an existence of seven N* and four Delta* new states with larger spin values.

Theoretical analysis of the astrophysical S-factor for the alpha+d -->6Li + gamma capture reaction in the two body model

Theoretical estimations for the astrophysical S-factor and the d(alpha,gamma)6Li reaction rates are obtained on the base of the two-body model with the alpha-d potential of a simple Gaussian form, which describes correctly the phase-shifts in the S-, P-, and D-waves, the binding energy and the asymptotic normalization constant in the final S-state. Wave functions of the bound and continuum states are calculated by using the Numerov algorithm of a high accuracy. A good convergence of the results for the E1- and E2- components of the transition is shown when increasing the upper limit of effective integrals up to 40 fm. The obtained results for the S-factor and reaction rates in the temperature interval 10E+6 K < T < 10E+10 K are in a good agreement with the results of Ref. A.M. Mukhamedzhanov, et.al., Phys. Rev., C 83, 055805 (2011), where the authors used the known asymptotical form of wave function at low energies and a complicated potential at higher energies.

A periodic table for the excited Nucleon and Delta spectrum in a relativistic chiral quark model

A possibility of the construction of a periodic table for the excited baryon spectrum is shown in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark model based on selection rules derived from the one-pion exchange mechanism. It is shown that all the $N^*$ and $Δ^*$ resonances appearing in the $πN$ scattering data and strongly coupling to the $πN$ channel are identified with the orbital configurations $(1S_{1/2})^2(nlj)$. Baryon resonances corresponding to the orbital configuration with two valence quarks in excited states couple strongly to the $ππN$-channel, but not to the $πN$ channel. At low energy scale up to 2000 MeV, the obtained numerical estimations for the SU(2) baryon states (up to and including F-wave $N^*$ and $Δ^*$ resonances) within the schematic periodic table are mostly consistent with the experimental data. It is argued that due-to the overestimation of the ground state N(939) and Roper resonance N(1440) almost by the same amount and that the Roper resonance is a radial excitation of the N(939), the "lowering mechanism" for the both baryon states must be the same. The same mechanism is expected in the $Δ$ sector. At higher energies, where the experimental data are poor, we can extend our model schematically and predict seven new $N^*$ and four $Δ^*$ resonances with larger spin values.

Beta delayed emission of a proton by a one-neutron halo nucleus

Some one-neutron halo nuclei can emit a proton in a beta decay of the halo neutron. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is calculated within a two-body potential model of the initial core+neutron bound state and final core+proton scattering states. The decay probability per second is evaluated for the $^{11}$Be, $^{19}$C and $^{31}$Ne one-neutron halo nuclei. It is very sensitive to the neutron separation energy.

A unique decay process: beta delayed emission of a proton and a neutron by the $^{11}$Li halo nucleus

The neutron-rich $^{11}$Li halo nucleus is unique among nuclei with known separation energies by its ability to emit a proton and a neutron in a $β$ decay process. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is evaluated within a three-body model for the initial bound state and with Coulomb three-body final scattering states. The branching ratio should be comprised between two extreme cases, i.e.\ a lower bound $6 \times 10^{-12}$ obtained with a pure Coulomb wave and an upper bound $5 \times 10^{-10}$ obtained with a plane wave. A simple model with modified Coulomb waves provides plausible values between between $0.8 \times 10^{-10}$ and $2.2 \times 10^{-10}$ with most probable total energies of the proton and neutron between 0.15 and 0.3 MeV.

Convergence of the self-energy in a relativistic chiral quark model: excited Nucleon and $Δ$ sector

A convergence of the valence quark self-energies in the 1S, 2S, $1P_{1/2}$, $1P_{3/2}$ orbits induced by pion and gluon field configurations, is shown in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark model. It is shown that in order to reach a convergence, one needs to include contribution of the intermediate quark and anti-quark states with the total momentum up to $j=25/2$. It is argued that a restriction to the lowest mode when estimating the self-energy is not good approximation.

Electromagnetic and weak processes with light halo nuclei

The beta-decay of the 6He halo nucleus and the M1-transition processes of the excited 6Li(0+) state into the alpha + d continuum are studied in a three-body model. The initial nuclear states are described as an alpha + 2N system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. The energy dependence and absolute values of the beta-transition probability per time and energy units of a recent experiment can be reproduced very well with an appropriate alpha + d potential. A total transition probability of 2.04E-6 s^(-1) is obtained in agreement with the experiment. Due to a strong cancellation of the internal and halo components of the matrix elements, halo effects are shown to be very important. For the M1 transition process the halo structure of the excited 6Li(0+) isobaric analog state is confirmed. The cancellation effects, however, are not so strong. The transition probability is strongly sensitive to the description of the alpha + d phase shifts. Charge symmetry is analyzed through a comparison of the two processes. The present branching ratio Gamma(0^+ --> alpha + d)/Gamma(0^+ --> 1+) is of the order 1.0E-4, and is expected to be observable in current experiments.

Relativistic structure of one-meson and one-gluon exchange forces and the lower excitation spectrum of the Nucleon and the Delta

The lower excitation spectrum of the nucleon and $Δ$ is calculated in a relativistic chiral quark model. Corrections to the baryon mass spectrum from the second order self-energy and exchange diagrams induced by pion and gluon fields are estimated in the field -theoretical framework. Convergent results for the self-energy terms are obtained when including the intermediate quark and antiquark states with a total momentum up to $j=25/2$. Relativistic one-meson and color-magnetic one-gluon exchange forces are shown to generate spin 0, 1, 2, etc. operators, which couple the lower and the upper components of the two interacting valence quarks and yield reasonable matrix elements for the lower excitation spectrum of the Nucleon and Delta. The only contribution to the ground state nucleon and $Δ$ comes from the spin 1 operators, which correspond to the exchanged pion or gluon in the l=1 orbit, thus indicating, that the both pion exchange and color-magnetic gluon exchange forces can contribute to the spin of baryons. Is is shown also that the contribution of the color-electric component of the gluon fields to the baryon spectrum is enormously large (more than 500 MeV with a value $α_s=0.65$) and one needs to restrict to very small values of the strong coupling constant or to exclude completely the gluon-loop corrections to the baryon spectrum. With this restriction, the calculated spectrum reproduces the main properties of the data, however needs further contribution from the two-pion exchange and instanton induced exchange (for the nucleon sector) forces in consistence with the realistic NN-interaction models.

Gamma-delayed deuteron emission of the 6Li (0+;T=1) halo state

M1 transitions from the $^6$Li($0^+;T=1$) state at 3.563 MeV to the $^6$Li($1^+$) ground state and to the $α+d$ continuum are studied in a three-body model. The bound states are described as an $α+n+p$ system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. The ground-state magnetic moment and the gamma width of the $^6$Li(0$^+$) resonance are well reproduced. The halo-like structure of the $^6$Li$(0^+)$ resonance is confirmed and is probed by the M1 transition probability to the $α+d$ continuum. The spectrum is sensitive to the description of the $α+d$ phase shifts. The corresponding gamma width is around 1.0 meV, with optimal potentials. Charge symmetry is analyzed through a comparison with the $β$-delayed deuteron spectrum of $^6$He. In $^6$He, a nearly perfect cancellation effect between short-range and halo contributions was found. A similar analysis for the $^6$Li($0^+;T=1$) $γ$ decay is performed; it shows that charge-symmetry breaking at large distances, due to the different binding energies and to different charges, reduces this effect. The present branching ratio $Γ_γ(0^+\to α+d)/Γ_γ(0^+\to1^+)\approx 1.3\times 10^{-4}$ should be observable with current experimental facilities.

11Li beta decay into 9Li and deuteron within a three-body model

The beta decay process of the 11Li halo nucleus into 9Li and d is studied in a three-body model. The 11Li nucleus is described as a 9Li+n+n system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. Various 9Li+d potentials are compared involving a forbidden state, a physical bound state, and a resonance near 0.25 MeV in the s-wave. With an added surface absorption, they are compatible with elastic scattering data. The transition probability per time unit is quite sensitive to the location of the resonance. For a fixed resonance location, it does not depend much on the potential choice at variance with the 6He delayed deuteron decay. The calculated transition probability per time unit is larger than the experimental value but the difference can be explained by a slightly higher resonance location and/or by absorption from the 9Li+d final channel.

Three-body continuum states on a Lagrange mesh

Three-body continuum states are investigated with the hyperspherical method on a Lagrange mesh. The $R$-matrix theory is used to treat the asymptotic behaviour of scattering wave functions. The formalism is developed for neutral as well as for charged systems. We point out some specificities of continuum states in the hyperspherical method. The collision matrix can be determined with a good accuracy by using propagation techniques. The method is applied to the $^6$He (=$α$+n+n) and $^6$Be (=$α$+p+p) systems, as well as to $^{14}$Be (=$^{12}$Be+n+n). For $^6$He, we essentially recover results of the literature. Application to $^{14}$Be suggests the existence of an excited $2^+$ state below threshold. The calculated B(E2) value should make this state observable with Coulomb excitation experiments.

Analysis of the $^6$He $β$ decay into the $α+d$ continuum within a three-body model

The beta-decay process of the $^6$He halo nucleus into the alpha+d continuum is studied in a three-body model. The $^6$He nucleus is described as an alpha+n+n system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. The convergence of the Gamow-Teller matrix element requires the knowledge of wave functions up to about 30 fm and of hypermomentum components up to K=24. The shape and absolute values of the transition probability per time and energy units of a recent experiment can be reproduced very well with an appropriate alpha+d potential. A total transition probability of 1.6E-6 s$^{-1}$ is obtained in agreement with that experiment. Halo effects are shown to be very important because of a strong cancellation between the internal and halo components of the matrix element, as observed in previous studies. The forbidden bound state in the alpha+d potential is found essential to reproduce the order of magnitude of the data. Comments are made on R-matrix fits.

Lower Excitation Spectrum of the Nucleon and Delta in a Relativistic Chiral Quark Model

The lower excitation spectrum of the nucleon and $Δ$ is calculated in a relativistic chiral quark model. Contributions of the second order self-energy and exchange diagrams due-to pion fields to the mass spectrum of the SU(2) baryons are estimated. A splitting between N(939) and positive parity nucleon resonance (Roper resonance) $N^*(1440)$ is reproduced with a reasonable accuracy. The obtained structure of one-meson exchange interaction confirms a prediction of the large $N_c$ limit approach stating that the mass splitting between various baryon states receive contributions from operators which simultaneously couple spin, isospin and orbital momentum. It is shown that one-meson exchange interaction generates a splitting between negative parity $N^*(1/2^-)$ and $N^*(3/2^-)$ states, and also between $Δ^*(3/2^-)$ and $Δ^*(1/2^-)$ states in contrast to the non-relativistic Goldstone-Boson Exchange based quark models. This splitting is due-to a relativistic operator which couples the lower and upper orbital momentum of two interacting valence quarks.

Comparative variational studies of $0^+$ states in three-$α$ models

Three variational approaches, the hyperspherical-harmonics, Gaussian-basis and Lagrange-mesh methods involving different coordinate systems, are compared in studies of $0^+$ bound-state energies in 3$α$ models. Calculations are performed with different versions of the shallow Ali-Bodmer potential (with and without Coulomb) and with the deep Buck-Friedrich-Wheatley potential. All three methods yield very accurate energies. Their advantages and drawbacks are evaluated. The implications of the disagreement between the obtained results and the experimental $^{12}$C energies in $3α$ models with Coulomb interaction are discussed.

Variational Calculations of the $^{12}C$ Nucleus Structure in a 3$α$ Model Using a Deep Potential with Forbidden States

The energy spectrum of the $^{12}C$ nucleus with $(J^π, T)=(0^+,0)$ and $(2^+,0)$ is investigated in the framework of the multicluster dynamical model by using a deep $αα$-potential with forbidden states in the S and D waves. A very high sensitivity of the compact ground and first excited $2^+_1$ states energy levels to the description of the two-body forbidden states wave functions has been estabilished. It is shown also that the chosen method of orthogonalizing pseudopotentials yields convergent results for the energies of the excited $(0^+_2,0)$ and $(0^+_3,0)$ states of the $^{12}C$ nucleus with a well developed cluster like structure.
