Predicting the location of shear band initiation in a metallic glass

We report atomistic simulation results which indicate that the location of shear banding in a metallic glass (MG) can be ascertained with reasonably high accuracy solely from the undeformed static structure. Correlation is observed between the location of the initiation of shear bands in a simulated MG and the initial distribution of the density of fertile sites (DFS) for stress-driven shear transformations identified a priori based on a deep learning model devised in our recent work [Fan and Ma, Nat. Commun. 12, 1506 (2021)]. In addition, we demonstrated that one can judge whether a glass is brittle or ductile solely based upon its initial DFS distribution. These validate that shear bands in MG arise from non-linear instabilities, and that the as-quenched glass structure contains inhomogeneities that influence these instabilities. This work also reveals an important subtlety regarding the non-deterministic nature of athermal quasistatic shear simulations.

Finite SU(3)^3 model

We consider N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories based on the group SU(N)_1 x SU(N)_2 x ... x SU(N)_k with matter content (N,N*,1,...,1) + (1,N,N*,..., 1) + >... + (N*,1,1,...,N) as candidates for the unification symmetry of all particles. In particular we examine to which extent such theories can become finite, and find that a necessary condition is that there should be exactly three families. From phenomenological considerations an SU(3)^3 model is singled out. We consider an all-loop and a two-loop finite model based on this gauge group and we study their predictions concerning the third generation quark masses.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Baryon and Lepton Number Violation with Scalar Bilinears

We consider all possible scalar bilinears, which couple to two fermions of the standard model. The various baryon and lepton number violating couplings allowed by these exotic scalars are studied. We then discuss which ones are constrained by limits on proton decay (to a lepton and a meson as well as to three leptons), neutron-antineutron oscillations, and neutrinoless double beta decay.

Light Charged Higgs Bosons in Supersymmetric Models

We point out that present experimental limits from searches for neutral Higgs bosons at LEP already imply stringent lower bounds on the mass of the charged Higgs boson in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM); these bounds are especially severe for low values of \tanb ($\tanb \leq 3$), where the $H^+ \bar{t} b$ coupling is large. However, these indirect constraints are much weaker in simple extensions of the MSSM Higgs sector involving the introduction of an extra U(1) gauge group or an extra $SU(2) \times U(1)_Y$ Higgs singlet field; in the latter case charged Higgs bosons can even be light enough to be pair produced at LEP.
