eta, eta-prime photoproduction and electroproduction off protons

Photo- and electroproduction of eta, eta-prime mesons on protons are investigated within a relativistic chiral unitary approach based on coupled channels. The s wave potentials for electroproduction and meson-baryon scattering are derived from a chiral effective Lagrangian which includes the eta-prime as an explicit degree of freedom and incorporates important features of the underlying QCD Lagrangian such as the axial U(1) anomaly. The effective potentials are iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation and cross sections for eta, eta-prime photo- and electroproduction from protons are obtained. The results for the eta-prime photoproduction cross section reproduce the appearance of an S_(11) resonance around 1.9 GeV observed at ELSA. The inclusion of electromagnetic form factors increases the predicted eta electroproduction cross sections, providing a qualitative explanation for the hard form factor of the photocoupling amplitude observed at CLAS.

Final state interactions in nonleptonic hyperon decays

We investigate the importance of final state interactions in weak nonleptonic hyperon decays within a relativistic chiral unitary approach based on coupled channels. The effective potentials for meson-baryon scattering are derived from a chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation, which generates the low lying baryon resonances dynamically. The inclusion of final state interactions decreases the discrepancy between theory and experiment for both s and p waves. Our study indicates that contributions from higher order terms of the weak effective Lagrangian may play an important role in these decays.

Note on finite temperature sum rules for vector and axial-vector spectral functions

An updated analysis of vector and axial-vector spectral functions is presented. The resonant contributions to the spectral integrals are shown to be expressible as multiples of 4 pi^2 f_pi^2, encoding the scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Up to order T^2 this behavior carries over to the case of finite temperature.

Photoproduction of quasi-bound omega mesons in nuclei

We propose the (gamma,p) reaction as a means of producing possible quasi-bound states of omega mesons in nuclei. We use an effective Lagrangian, based on chiral SU(3) symmetry and vector meson dominance, in order to construct the omega-nuclear potential. The contribution of bound omega states is observable in the missing energy spectra of protons emitted in forward direction for several nuclei.

The phi --> pi^+ pi^- and phi radiative decays within a chiral unitary approach

We report on recent results on the decay of the phi into pi^+ pi^- and phi radiative decays into pi^0 pi^0 gamma and pi^0 eta gamma, which require the consideration of the final state interaction of a pair of mesons in a region inaccessible to Chiral Perturbation Theory. By using nonperturbative chiral unitary methods for the meson meson interaction we can obtain the corresponding decay widths and the results are compared with recent experimental data.

Photoproduction of meson and baryon resonances in a chiral unitary approach

By means of a coupled channel non-perturbative unitary approach, it is possible to extend the strong constrains of Chiral Perturbation Theory to higher energies. In particular, it is possible to reproduce the lowest lying resonances in meson-meson scattering up to 1.2 GeV using the parameters of the O(p^2) and O(p^4) Chiral Lagrangian. The meson baryon sector can also be tackled along similar lines. We report on an update of these results showing some examples of photon induced reactions where the techniques have been recently applied.

QCD spectral sum rules and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry

The gap Delta = 4 pi f_pi ~ 1.2 GeV of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is introduced as a scale delineating resonance and continuum regions in the QCD spectral sum rules for vector mesons. Basic current algebra results are easily recovered, and accurate sum rules for the lower moments of the spectral distributions are derived. The in-medium scaling of vector meson masses finds a straightforward interpretation, at least in the narrow width limit.

Radiative decay of rho^0 and phi mesons in a chiral unitary approach

We study the rho^0 and phi decays into pi^+ pi^- gamma, pi^0 pi^0 gamma and phi into pi^0 eta gamma using a chiral unitary approach to deal with the final state interaction of the M M system. The final state interaction modifies only moderately the large momenta tail of the photon spectrum of the rho^0 --> pi^+ pi^- gamma decay. In the case of phi decay the contribution to pi^+ pi^- gamma and pi^0 pi^0 gamma decay proceeds via kaonic loops and gives a distribution of pi pi invariant masses in which the f_0(980) resonance shows up with a very distinct peak. The spectrum found for phi --> pi^0 pi^0 gamma decay agrees with the recent experimental results obtained at Novosibirsk. The branching ratio for phi --> pi^0 eta gamma, dominated by the a_0(980), is also in agreement with recent Novosibirsk results.

Chiral symmetry in electromagnetically induced resonant two hadron production

We report on recent progress on the chiral unitary approach, analogous to the effective range expansion in Quantum Mechanics, which is shown to have a much larger convergence radius than ordinary chiral perturbation theory, allowing one to reproduce data for meson meson interaction up to 1.2 GeV. Applications to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative approach are presented, in which two hadrons, either two mesons or a meson and a baryon, in a resonant state are produced in photoproduction processes.

Photoproduction of scalar mesons on protons and nuclei

We study the photoproduction of scalar mesons close to the threshold of f_0(980) and a_0(980) using a unitary chiral model. Peaks for both resonances show up in the invariant mass distributions of pairs of pseudoscalar mesons. A discussion is made on the photoproduction of these resonances in nuclei, which can shed light on their nature, a subject of continuous debate.

Recent progress on the chiral unitary approach to meson meson and meson baryon interactions

Applications to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative approach are presented. Results for the extension of these ideas to the meson baryon sector are discussed, together with applications to kaons in a nuclear medium and $K^-$ atoms.

Nuclear effects in the F3 structure function

By using a relativistic framework and accurate nuclear spectral functions we evaluate the ratio F_{3A}/AF_{3N} of deep inelastic neutrino scattering. Parametrizations of this ratio for different values of Q^2 are provided. These results should be useful for taking into account the nuclear effects in analyses of experimental data in neutrino reactions in nuclear targets, and test QCD predictions for the nucleon structure functions. In particular, the size of the nuclear corrections is of the same order of magnitude as the size of the QCD corrections to the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule.

Mesonic and Binding Contributions to the Nuclear Drell-Yan Process

We have evaluated the Drell-Yan cross section in nuclei paying special attention to the meson cloud contribution from pion and rho-meson, for which an accurate calculation using the meson nuclear spectral functions is used. Similarly, the nucleonic contribution is evaluated in terms of a relativistic nucleon spectral function. Fair agreement with experiment is found for different nuclei and the results show a sizeable contribution from the renormalized meson cloud. In order to reproduce the experiment a novel element is introduced, consisting of a gradual energy loss of the incoming proton in its pass through the nucleus which produces a strong A dependence at x_1 large.

Quasielastic Versus Inelastic and Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering in Nuclei at x > 1

We have made a thorough investigation of the nuclear structure function W_2A in the region of 0.8 < x < 1.5 and Q^2 < 20 GeV^2, separating the quasielastic and inelastic plus deep inelastic contributions. The agreement with present experimental data is good giving support to the results for both channels. Predictions are made in yet unexplored regions of x and Q^2 to assert the weight of the quasielastic or inelastic channels. We find that at Q^2 < 4 GeV^2 the structure function is dominated by the quasielastic contributions for x < 1.5, while for values of Q^2 > 15 GeV^2 and the range of x studied the inelastic channels are over one order of magnitude bigger than the quasielastic one. The potential of the structure function at x > 1 as a source of information on nuclear correlations is stressed once more.

Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering in Nuclei at x > 1 and the Nucleon Spectral Function

The nuclear structure function F_2A(x) has been studied in the Bjorken limit for (l, l') scattering on nuclei in the region of x > 1 and was found to be very sensitive to the information contained in the nucleon spectral function in nuclei, particularly the correlations between momenta and energies in the region of large momenta. Calculations were done in a local density approximation using two different spectral functions for nuclear matter. Results are compared to those obtained for a spectral function which has been evaluated directly for the finite nucleus, ^{16}O, under consideration. For values of x around 1.5 and larger the quasiparticle contribution is negligible, thus stressing the sensitivity of the present reaction to the dynamical properties of nuclei beyond the shell model approach. Several approximations which are usually employed in studies of the EMC effect have been analyzed and their inaccuracy in this region is demonstrated. The results stress the fact that the nuclear structure function contains important information on nuclear dynamical correlations. Therefore further measurements of F_2A(x) in that region and for many nuclei would be most welcome.

Mesonic and Binding Contributions to the EMC Effect in a Relativistic Many Body Approach

We revise the conventional nuclear effects of Fermi motion, binding and pionic effects in deep inelastic lepton scattering using a relativistic formalism for an interacting Fermi sea and the local density approximation to translate results from nuclear matter to finite nuclei. In addition we also consider effects from rho-meson renormalization in the nucleus. The use of nucleon Green's functions in terms of their spectral functions offers a precise way to account for Fermi motion and binding. On the other hand the use of many body Feynman diagrams in a relativistic framework allows one to avoid using prescriptions given in the past to introduce relativistic corrections in a non relativistic formalism. We show that with realistic nucleon spectral functions and meson nucleus selfenergies one can get a reasonable description of the EMC effect for x > 0.15, outside the shadowing region.

Mesonic and Binding Contributions to the EMC Effect in a Relativistic Many-body Approach

Starting from a covariant relativistic formalism which uses nucleon and pion propagators in a nuclear medium, we revise the traditional effects of Fermi motion, binding and mesonic corrections to the EMC effect. The calculations are done in a very accurate way, using precise nucleon spectral functions and meson self-energies and a good reproduction of the EMC data is obtained outside the shadowing region which is not explored.
