Finite size scaling in Villain's fully frustrated model and singular effects of plaquette disorder

The ground state and low T behavior of two-dimensional spin systems with discrete binary couplings are subtle but can be analyzed using exact computations of finite volume partition functions. We first apply this approach to Villain's fully frustrated model, unveiling an unexpected finite size scaling law. Then we show that the introduction of even a small amount of disorder on the plaquettes dramatically changes the scaling laws associated with the T=0 critical point.

Ageing, dynamical heterogeneities and crystallization in the Biroli-Mezard model

We discuss a number of essential dynamical features of the Biroli-Mezard model. We observe a dynamical slowing down which for high densities depends both on the observation time and on the age of the system. We relate this ageing behavior to the real space dynamics of the system, from which it is clear that the system initially gains mobility due to some essential initial restructuring. We discuss crystallization, its relevant time scales and connection with ageing. We quantify how heterogeneous the slow dynamics of the BM model is by investigating the dynamical susceptibility and discussing its dependence on the age of the system. We establish a number of quantitative evidences that are in good agreement with a recent analysis.

Ianus: an Adpative FPGA Computer

Dedicated machines designed for specific computational algorithms can outperform conventional computers by several orders of magnitude. In this note we describe {\it Ianus}, a new generation FPGA based machine and its basic features: hardware integration and wide reprogrammability. Our goal is to build a machine that can fully exploit the performance potential of new generation FPGA devices. We also plan a software platform which simplifies its programming, in order to extend its intended range of application to a wide class of interesting and computationally demanding problems. The decision to develop a dedicated processor is a complex one, involving careful assessment of its performance lead, during its expected lifetime, over traditional computers, taking into account their performance increase, as predicted by Moore's law. We discuss this point in detail.

Inferring DNA sequences from mechanical unzipping: an ideal-case study

We introduce and test a method to predict the sequence of DNA molecules from in silico unzipping experiments. The method is based on Bayesian inference and on the Viterbi decoding algorithm. The probability of misprediction decreases exponentially with the number of unzippings, with a decay rate depending on the applied force and the sequence content.

Critical thermodynamics of the two-dimensional +/-J Ising spin glass

We compute the exact partition function of 2d Ising spin glasses with binary couplings. In these systems, the ground state is highly degenerate and is separated from the first excited state by a gap of size 4J. Nevertheless, we find that the low temperature specific heat density scales as exp(-2J/T), corresponding to an ``effective'' gap of size 2J; in addition, an associated cross-over length scale grows as exp(J/T). We justify these scalings via the degeneracy of the low-lying excitations and by the way low energy domain walls proliferate in this model.

A New Method to Compute the Configurational Entropy in Spin Glasses

We propose a new method to compute the configurational entropy of glassy systems as a function of the free energy of valleys at a given temperature, in the framework of the Stillinger and Weber approach. In this method, which we call free-energy inherent structures (FEIS) approach, valleys are represented by inherent structures that are statistically grouped according to their free-energy rather than the energy as is commonly done in the standard procedure. The FEIS method provides a further step toward a description of the relaxational behavior of glassy systems in terms of a free energy measure. It can be used to determine the character of the glass transition as well as the mode coupling and the Kauzmann temperatures. We illustrate the usefulness of the method by applying it to simple models of glasses and spin glasses.

Low T Dynamical Properties of Spin Glasses Smoothly Extrapolate to T=0

We compare ground state properties of 3D Ising Spin Glasses with Gaussian couplings with results from off-equilibrium numerical simulations at non zero (but low) temperatures. We find that the non-zero temperature properties of the system smoothly connect to the T=0 behavior, confirming the point of view that results established at T=0 typically also give relevant information about the $T\ne 0$ physics of the system.

Zero-temperature responses of a 3D spin glass in a field

We probe the energy landscape of the 3D Edwards-Anderson spin glass in a magnetic field to test for a spin glass ordering. We find that the spin glass susceptibility is anomalously large on the lattice sizes we can reach. Our data suggest that a transition from the spin glass to the paramagnetic phase takes place at B_c=0.65, though the possibility B_c=0 cannot be excluded. We also discuss the question of the nature of the putative frozen phase.

Equilibrium valleys in spin glasses at low temperature

We investigate the 3-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass model at low temperature on simple cubic lattices of sizes up to L=12. Our findings show a strong continuity among T>0 physical features and those found previously at T=0, leading to a scenario with emerging mean field like characteristics that are enhanced in the large volume limit. For instance, the picture of space filling sponges seems to survive in the large volume limit at T>0, while entropic effects play a crucial role in determining the free-energy degeneracy of our finite volume states. All of our analysis is applied to equilibrium configurations obtained by a parallel tempering on 512 different disorder realizations. First, we consider the spatial properties of the sites where pairs of independent spin configurations differ and we introduce a modified spin overlap distribution which exhibits a non-trivial limit for large L. Second, after removing the Z_2 (+-1) symmetry, we cluster spin configurations into valleys. On average these valleys have free-energy differences of O(1), but a difference in the (extensive) internal energy that grows significantly with L; there is thus a large interplay between energy and entropy fluctuations. We also find that valleys typically differ by sponge-like space filling clusters, just as found previously for low-energy system-size excitations above the ground state.

Width Distributions and the Upper Critical Dimension of KPZ Interfaces

Simulations of restricted solid-on-solid growth models are used to build the width-distributions of d=2-5 dimensional KPZ interfaces. We find that the universal scaling function associated with the steady-state width-distribution changes smoothly as d is increased, thus strongly suggesting that d=4 is not an upper critical dimension for the KPZ equation. The dimensional trends observed in the scaling functions indicate that the upper critical dimension is at infinity.

Droplet Motion for the Conservative 2D Ising Lattice Gas Dynamics below the Critical Temperature

We consider the 2D Ising lattice gas in a square of side L with free boundary conditions, temperature below the critical one and particle density slightly above the density of the vapor phase. Typical configurations consist of a quarter of a Wulff droplet of the liquid phase centered at one of the corners of the given square. We then introduced a reversible Markovian spin exchange dynamics, also known as Kawasaki dynamics, on the configuration space and we discuss the heuristics of the transition of a bubble of the liquid phase from one corner to another. We then present some numerical evidence suggesting that the preferred mechanism to make the transition is via evaporation of the original bubble and simultaneous reconstruction of a new bubble around a new corner.

Critical Exponents of the KPZ Equation via Multi-Surface Coding Numerical Simulations

We study the KPZ equation (in D = 2, 3 and 4 spatial dimensions) by using a RSOS discretization of the surface. We measure the critical exponents very precisely, and we show that the rational guess is not appropriate, and that 4D is not the upper critical dimension. We are also able to determine very precisely the exponent of the sub-leading scaling corrections, that turns out to be close to 1 in all cases. We introduce and use a {\em multi-surface coding} technique, that allow a gain of order 30 over usual numerical simulations.

On the Use of Optimized Monte Carlo Methods for Studying Spin Glasses

We start from recently published numerical data by Hatano and Gubernatis cond-mat/0008115 to discuss properties of convergence to equilibrium of optimized Monte Carlo methods (bivariate multi canonical and parallel tempering). We show that these data are not thermalized, and they lead to an erroneous physical picture. We shed some light on why the bivariate multi canonical Monte Carlo method can fail.

Spin Glass Ordering in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors: a Monte Carlo Study

We study the temperature-dilution phase diagram of a site-diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a fcc lattice, with and without the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropic term, fixed to realistic microscopic parameters for $IIB_{1-x} Mn_x Te$ (IIB=Cd, Hg, Zn). We show that the dipolar Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy induces a finite-temperature phase transition to a spin glass phase, at dilutions larger than 80%. The resulting probability distribution of the order parameter P(q) is similar to the one found in the cubic lattice Edwards-Anderson Ising model. The critical exponents undergo large finite size corrections, but tend to values similar to the ones of the Edwards-Anderson-Ising model.

Numerical Simulations of the 4D Edwards-Anderson Spin Glass with Binary Couplings

We present numerical results that allow a precise determination of the transition point and of the critical exponents of the 4D Edwards-Anderson Spin Glass with binary quenched random couplings. We show that the low T phase undergoes Replica Symmetry Breaking. We obtain results on large lattices, up to a volume $V=10^4$: we use finite size scaling to show the relevance of our results in the infinite volume limit.

Off-Equilibrium Dynamics at Very Low Temperatures in 3d Spin Glasses

We present a high statistic systematic study of the overlap correlation function well below the critical temperature in the three dimensional Gaussian spin glass. The off-equilibrium correlation function has been studied confirming the power law behavior for the dynamical correlation length. In particular we have computed the dynamical critical exponent $z$ in a wide range of temperatures, $0.35 \le T \le 0.9$, obtaining a dependence $z(T)=6.2/T$ in a very good agreement with recent experiments. Moreover, we report a study of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for very low temperatures $T=0.5$ and $T=0.35$. All our numerical results avoid a droplet model interpretation even when $T$ is as low as $T=0.35$.
