Tempering Dynamics and Relaxation Times in the $3D$ Ising Model

We discuss the tempering Monte Carlo method, and its critical slowing down in the $3d$ Ising model. We show that at $T_c$ the tempering does not change the critical slowing down exponent $z$. We also discuss the exponential slowing down for the transition from the plus to the minus state in the cold phase, and we show that tempering reduces it to a power law slowing down. We discuss the relation of the flip-flop rate to the surface tension for the local dynamical schemes.

More on the exponential bound of four dimensional simplicial quantum gravity

A crucial requirement for the standard interpretation of Monte Carlo simulations of simplicial quantum gravity is the existence of an exponential bound that makes the partition function well-defined. We present numerical data favoring the existence of an exponential bound, and we argue that the more limited data sets on which recently opposing claims were based are also consistent with the existence of an exponential bound.

Replica Field Theory for Deterministic Models: Binary Sequences with Low Autocorrelation

We study systems without quenched disorder with a complex landscape, and we use replica symmetry theory to describe them. We discuss the Golay-Bernasconi-Derrida approximation of the low autocorrelation model, and we reconstruct it by using replica calculations. Then we consider the full model, its low $T$ properties (with the help of number theory) and a Hartree-Fock resummation of the high-temperature series. We show that replica theory allows to solve the model in the high $T$ phase. Our solution is based on one-link integral techniques, and is based on substituting a Fourier transform with a generic unitary transformation. We discuss this approach as a powerful tool to describe systems with a complex landscape in the absence of quenched disorder.

Some Numerical Results on the Block Spin Transformation for the 2D Ising Model at the Critical Point

We study the block spin transformation for the 2D Ising model at the critical temperature $T_c$. We consider the model with the constraint that the total spin in each block is zero. An old argument by Cassandro and Gallavotti allows to show that the Gibbs potential for the transformed measure is well defined, provided that such model has a critical temperature $T'_c$ lower than $T_c$. After describing a possible rigorous approach to the problem, we present numerical evidence that indeed $T'_c<T_c$, and a study of the Dobrushin-Shlosman uniqueness condition.

The Phenomenology of Strings and Clusters in the 3-d Ising Model

We examine the geometrical and topological properties of surfaces surrounding clusters in the 3--$d$ Ising model. For geometrical clusters at the percolation temperature and Fortuin--Kasteleyn clusters at $T_c$, the number of surfaces of genus $g$ and area $A$ behaves as $A^{x(g)}e^{-μ(g)A}$, with $x$ approximately linear in $g$ and $μ$ constant. We observe that cross--sections of spin domain boundaries at $T_c$ decompose into a distribution $N(l)$ of loops of length $l$ that scales as $l^{-τ}$ with $τ\sim 2.2$. We address the prospects for a string--theoretic description of cluster boundaries. Critical Slowing Down of Cluster Algorithms for Ising Models Coupled to 2-d Gravity

We simulate single and multiple Ising models coupled to 2-d gravity using both the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff algorithms to update the spins. We study the integrated autocorrelation time and find that there is considerable critical slowing down, particularly in the magnetization. We argue that this is primarily due to the local nature of the dynamical triangulation algorithm and to the generation of a distribution of baby universes which inhibits cluster growth.

On the 3d Ising Spin Glass

We study the $3d$ Ising spin glass with $\pm 1$ couplings. We introduce a modified local action. We use finite size scaling techniques and very large lattice simulations. We find that our data are compatible both with a finite $T$ transition and with a $T=0$ singularity of an unusual type.

Critical and Topological Properties of Cluster Boundaries in the $3d$ Ising Model

We analyze the behavior of the ensemble of surface boundaries of the critical clusters at $T=T_c$ in the $3d$ Ising model. We find that $N_g(A)$, the number of surfaces of given genus $g$ and fixed area $A$, behaves as $A^{-x(g)}$ $e^{-μA}$. We show that $μ$ is a constant independent of $g$ and $x(g)$ is approximately a linear function of $g$. The sum of $N_g(A)$ over genus scales as a power of $A$. We also observe that the volume of the clusters is proportional to its surface area. We argue that this behavior is typical of a branching instability for the surfaces, similar to the ones found for non-critical string theories with $c > 1$. We discuss similar results for the ordinary spin clusters of the $3d$ Ising model at the minority percolation point and for $3d$ bond percolation. Finally we check the universality of these critical properties on the simple cubic lattice and the body centered cubic lattice.

Maximal Mean Field Solutions in the Random Field Ising Model: the Pattern of the Symmetry Breaking

In this note we study the mean field equations for the $3d$ Random Field Ising Model. We discuss the phase diagram of the model, and we address the problem of finding if such equations admit more than one solution. We find two different critical values of $β$: one where the magnetization takes a non-zero expectation value, and one where we start to have more than one solution to the mean field equation. We find that, inside a given solution, there are no divergent correlation lengths.

The String Tension in Gauge Theories: a Suggestion for a New Measurement Method

We discuss a new method for testing confinement and measuring the string tension (in the Coulomb gauge). Our numerical simulations demonstrate that the problems related to Gribov copies are not harmful and that the method is effective in the case of pure gauge Q.C.D.. We discuss the relevance of the method for studying gauge theories coupled to fermionic matter.

4d Simplicial Quantum Gravity with a Non-Trivial Measure

We study 4d simplicial quantum gravity in the dynamical triangulation approach with a non-trivial class of measures. We find that the measure contribution plays an important role, influencing the phase diagram and the nature of the (possible) critical theory. We discuss how the lattice theory could be used to fix the quantum measure in a non-ambiguous way.
