A Classification of Integrable Quasiclassical Deformations of Algebraic Curves

A previously introduced scheme for describing integrable deformations of of algebraic curves is completed. Lenard relations are used to characterize and classify these deformations in terms of hydrodynamic type systems. A general solution of the compatibility conditions for consistent deformations is given and expressions for the solutions of the corresponding Lenard relations are provided.

Antiresonances as precursors of decoherence

We show that, in presence of a complex spectrum, antiresonances act as a precursor for dephasing enabling the crossover to a fully decoherent transport even within a unitary Hamiltonian description. This general scenario is illustrated here by focusing on a quantum dot coupled to a chaotic cavity containing a finite, but large, number of states using a Hamiltonian formulation. For weak coupling to a chaotic cavity with a sufficiently dense spectrum, the ensuing complex structure of resonances and antiresonances leads to phase randomization under coarse graining in energy. Such phase instabilities and coarse graining are the ingredients for a mechanism producing decoherence and thus irreversibility. For the present simple model one finds a conductance that coincides with the one obtained by adding a ficticious voltage probe within the Landauer-Buettiker picture. This sheds new light on how the microscopic mechanisms that produce phase fluctuations induce decoherence.

Metal-insulator transition in one-dimensional lattices with chaotic energy sequences

We study electronic transport through a one-dimensional array of sites by using a tight binding Hamiltonian, whose site-energies are drawn from a chaotic sequence. The correlation degree between these energies is controlled by a parameter regulating the dynamic Lyapunov exponent measuring the degree of chaos. We observe the effect of chaotic sequences on the localization length, conductance, conductance distribution and wave function, finding evidence of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) at a critical degree of chaos. The one-dimensional metallic phase is characterized by a Gaussian conductance distribution and exhibits a peculiar non-selfaveraging.

Integrable Quasiclassical Deformations of Cubic Curves

A general scheme for determining and studying hydrodynamic type systems describing integrable deformations of algebraic curves is applied to cubic curves. Lagrange resolvents of the theory of cubic equations are used to derive and characterize these deformations.

Ballistic resistivity in aluminum nanocontacts

One of the major industrial challenges is to profit from some fascinating physical features present at the nanoscale. The production of dissipationless nanoswitches (or nanocontacts) is one of such attractive applications. Nevertheless, the lack of knowledge of the real efficiency of electronic ballistic/non dissipative transport limits future innovations. For multi-valent metallic nanosystems -where several transport channels per atom are involved- the only experimental technique available for statistical transport characterization is the conductance histogram. Unfortunately its interpretation is difficult because transport and mechanical properties are intrinsically interlaced. We perform a representative series of semiclassical molecular dynamics simulations of aluminum nanocontact breakages, coupled to full quantum conductance calculations, and put in evidence a linear relationship between the conductance and the contact minimum cross-section for the geometrically favored aluminum nanocontact configurations. Valid in a broad range of conductance values, such relation allows the definition of a transport parameter for nanomaterials, that represents the novel concept of ballistic resistivity.

Conductance Distributions in Random Resistor Networks: Self Averaging and Disorder Lengths

The self averaging properties of conductance $g$ are explored in random resistor networks with a broad distribution of bond strengths $P(g)\simg^{μ-1}$. Distributions of equivalent conductances are estimated numerically on hierarchical lattices as a function of size $L$ and distribution tail parameter $μ$. For networks above the percolation threshold, convergence to a Gaussian basin is always the case, except in the limit $μ$ --> 0. A {\it disorder length} $ξ_D$ is identified beyond which the system is effectively homogeneous. This length diverges as $ξ_D \sim |μ|^{-ν}$ ($ν$ is the regular percolation correlation length exponent) as $μ$-->0. This suggest that exactly the same critical behavior can be induced by geometrical disorder and bu strong bond disorder with the bond occupation probability $p$<-->$μ$. Only lattices at the percolation threshold have renormalized probability distribution in a {\it Levy-like} basin. At the threshold the disorder length diverges at a vritical tail strength $μ_c$ as $|μ-μ_c|^{-z}$, with $z=3.2\pm 0.1$, a new exponent. Critical path analysis is used in a generalized form to give form to give the macroscopic conductance for lattice above $p_c$.
