HD 203608, a quiet asteroseismic target in the old galactic disk

A short observing run with the spectrometer Harps at the ESO 3.6-m telescope was conducted in order to continue exploring the asteroseismic properties of F type stars. In fact, Doppler observations of F type on the main sequence are demanding and remain currently limited to a single case (HD 49933). Comparison with photometric results obtained with the CoRoT mission on similar stars will be possible with an enhanced set of observations. We selected the 4th magnitude F8V star HD 203608, in order to investigate the oscillating properties of a low-metallicity star of the old galactic disk. A 5-night asteroseismic observation program has been conducted in August 2006 with Harps. Spectra were reduced with the on-line data reduction software provided by the instrument. A new statistical approach has been developed for extracting the significant peaks in the Fourier domain. The oscillation spectrum shows a significant excess power in the frequency range [1.5, 3.0 mHz]. It exhibits a large spacing about 120.4 $μ$Hz at 2.5 mHz. Variations of the large spacing with frequency are clearly identified, which require an adapted asymptotic development. The modes identification is based on the unambiguous signature of 15 modes with $\ell = 0$ and 1. This observation shows the potential diagnostic of asteroseismic constraints. Including them in the stellar modeling enhances significantly the precision on the physical parameters of \cible, resulting in a much more precise position in the HR diagram. The age of the star is now determined in the range $7.25\pm0.07$ Gyr.

Oscillations in Procyon A: First results from a multi-site campaign

Procyon A is a bright F5IV star in a binary system. Although the distance, mass and angular diameter of this star are all known with high precision, the exact evolutionary state is still unclear. Evolutionary tracks with different ages and different mass fractions of hydrogen in the core pass, within the errors, through the observed position of Procyon A in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. For more than 15 years several different groups have studied the solar-like oscillations in Procyon A to determine its evolutionary state. Although several studies independently detected power excess in the periodogram, there is no agreement on the actual oscillation frequencies yet. This is probably due to either insufficient high-quality data (i.e., aliasing) or due to intrinsic properties of the star (i.e., short mode lifetimes). Now a spectroscopic multi-site campaign using 10 telescopes world-wide (minimizing aliasing effects) with a total time span of nearly 4 weeks (increase the frequency resolution) is performed to identify frequencies in this star and finally determine its properties and evolutionary state.

Simu-LC : a Light-Curve simulator for CoRoT

Simulating the data that a space instrument like COROT will provide might look presomptuous. Indeed, it is certainly, when comparing to previous comparable instruments like IPHIR or GOLF. These two examples show that the nominal behaviour of the instrument is not always reached, but this does not prevent this instrument to provide very interesting data. However, despite some technical problems, IPHIR and GOLF yielded a wealth of scientific results. Thus, what is the interest of simulating COROT data? How close to reality these simualtions will get? This might not be the most important fact as the preparation of these simulations will help us to prepare the analysis of real data and to be ready in case of unexpected technical behaviour of the instrument perturbating the data, or unexpected physical behaviour of the targets of the instrument. A consequence of that is that the simulation tool must include technical and physical aspects, making the task even more difficult. These aspects cover: photon noise, p modes excitation, granulation signal, stellar activity signal, orbital perturbations, stellar rotation... A search for solar-like oscillations in K giants in the globular cluster M4

To expand the range in the colour-magnitude diagram where asteroseismology can be applied, we organized a photometry campaign to find evidence for solar-like oscillations in giant stars in the globular cluster M4. The aim was to detect the comb-like p-mode structure characteristic for solar-like oscillations in the amplitude spectra. The two dozen main target stars are in the region of the bump stars and have luminosities in the range 50-140 Lsun. We collected 6160 CCD frames and light curves for about 14000 stars were extracted. We obtain high quality light curves for the K giants, but no clear oscillation signal is detected. High precision differential photometry is possible even in very crowded regions like the core of M4. Solar-like oscillations are probably present in K giants, but the amplitudes are lower than classical scaling laws predict.

Asteroseismology of delta Scuti stars in open clusters: Praesepe

The present paper provides a general overview of the asteroseismic potential of delta Scuti stars in clusters, in particular focusing on convection diagnostics. We give a summarise of the last results obtained by the authors for the Praesepe cluster of which five delta Scuti stars are analysed. In that work, linear analysis is confronted with observations, using refined descriptions for the effects of rotation on the determination of the global stellar parameters and on the adiabatic oscillation frequency computations. A single, complete, and coherent solution for all the selected stars is found, which lead the authors to find important restrictions to the convection description for a certain range of effective temperatures. Furthermore, the method used allowed to give an estimate of the global parameters of the selected stars and constrain the cluster.

Pulsational frequencies of the eclipsing delta-Scuti star HD 172189

The eclipsing delta-Scuti star HD 172189 is a probable member of the open cluster IC 4756 and a promising candidate target for the CoRoT mission. The detection of pulsation modes is the first step in the asteroseismological study of the star. Further, the calculation of the orbital parameters of the binary system allows us to make a dynamical determination of the mass of the star, which works as an important constraint to test and calibrate the asteroseismological models. From a detailed frequency analysis of 210 hours of photometric data of HD 172189 obtained from the STEPHI XIII campaign we have identified six pulsation frequencies with a confidence level of 99% and a seventh with a 65% confidence level in the range between 100-300 uHz. In addiction, three eclipses were observed during the campaign, allowing us to improve the determination of the orbital period of the system.

Multi-site observations of Delta Scuti stars 7 Aql and 8 Aql (a new Delta Scuti variable): The twelfth STEPHI campaign in 2003

We present an analysis of the pulsation behaviour of the Delta Scuti stars 7 Aql (HD 174532) and 8 Aql (HD 174589) -- a new variable star -- observed in the framework of STEPHI XII campaign during 2003 June--July. 183 hours of high precision photometry were acquired by using four-channel photometers at three sites on three continents during 21 days. The light curves and amplitude spectra were obtained following a classical scheme of multi-channel photometry. Observations in different filters were also obtained and analyzed. Six and three frequencies have been unambiguously detected above a 99% confidence level in the range 0.090 mHz--0.300 mHz and 0.100 mHz-- 0.145 mHz in 7 Aql and 8 Aql respectively. A comparison of observed and theoretical frequencies shows that 7 Aql and 8 Aql may oscillate with p modes of low radial orders, typical among Delta Scuti stars. In terms of radial oscillations the range of 8 Aql goes from n=1 to n=3 while for 7 Aql the range spans from n=4 to n=7. Non-radial oscillations have to be present in both stars as well. The expected range of excited modes according to a non adiabatic analysis goes from n=1 to n=6 in both stars.

Mode stability in delta Scuti stars: linear analysis versus observations in open clusters

A comparison between linear stability analysis and observations of pulsation modes in five delta Scuti stars, belonging to the same cluster, is presented. The study is based on the work by Michel et al. (1999), in which such a comparison was performed for a representative set of model solutions obtained independently for each individual star considered. In this paper we revisit the work by Michel et al. (1999) following, however, a new approach which consists in the search for a single, complete, and coherent solution for all the selected stars, in order to constrain and test the assumed physics describing these objects. To do so, refined descriptions for the effects of rotation on the determination of the global stellar parameters and on the adiabatic oscillation frequency computations are used. In addition, a crude attempt is made to study the role of rotation on the prediction of mode instabilities. The present results are found to be comparable with those reported by Michel et al. (1999). Within the temperature range log T_eff = 3.87-3.88 agreement between observations and model computations of unstable modes is restricted to values for the mixing-length parameter alpha_nl less or equal to 1.50. This indicates that for these stars a smaller value for alpha_nl is required than suggested from a calibrated solar model. We stress the point that the linear stability analysis used in this work still assumes stellar models without rotation and that further developments are required for a proper description of the interaction between rotation and pulsation dynamics.

Report on the CoRoT Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity

We present the work undertaken by the Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity (ESTA) team of the CoRoT Seismology Working Group. We have focused on two main tasks: Task 1 - now finished - has aimed at testing, comparing and optimising seven stellar evolution codes which will be used to model the internal structure and evolution of the CoRoT target stars. Task 2, still underway, aims at testing, comparing and optimising different seismic codes used to calculate the oscillations of models for different types of stars. The results already obtained are quite satisfactory, showing minor differences between the different numerical tools provided the same assumptions on the physical parameters are made. This work gives us confidence on the numerical tools that will be available to interpret the future CoRoT seismic data.

A seismological analysis of Delta Scuti stars in the Pleiades cluster

A comparison between the oscillation frequencies of six multi-periodic Delta Scuti stars of the Pleiades cluster and the eigenfrequencies of rotating stellar models that match the corresponding stellar parameters has been carried out. The assumption that all the stars considered have some common parameters, such as metallicity, distance or age, is imposed as a constraint. As a result, we have a best fit solution associated with a cluster metallicity of [Fe/H] ~ 0.067, an age between 70x10^6 and 100x10^6 yr and a distance modulus of mv-Mv=5.60-5.70 mag. All the stars were found to oscillate mainly in non-radial, low degree, low order p modes. Estimates of mass and rotation rates for each star are also obtained

Preparing the COROT space mission: new variable stars in the galactic Anticenter direction

The activities related to the preparation of the asteroseismic, photometric space mission COROT are described. Photoelectric observations, wide--field CCD photometry, uvbyB calibrations and further time--series have been obtained at different observatories and telescopes. They have been planned to complete the COROT programme in the direction of the galactic Anticenter. In addition to suitable asteroseismic targets covering the different evolutionary stages between ZAMS and TAMS, we discovered several other variable stars, both pulsating and geometrical. We compared results on the incidence of variability in the galactic Center and Anticenter directions. Physical parameters have been obtained and evolutionary tracks fitting them have been calculated. The peculiarities of some individual stars alre pointed out. Paper based on observations collected at the San Pedro Martir, Sierra Nevada, Teide, La Silla, Haute-Provence and Roque de Los Muchachos (Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and Mercator telescopes) observatories.

Preparing the COROT space mission: Building a photometric and variability database of stars in its field of view

The CNES/European space mission COROT will monitor asteroseismic targets located in selected fields to probe stellar interiors. Therefore, suitable candidate targets have to be searched for in order to optimize the scientific return of the mission. However, to be able to use the asteroseismic tools on the stars, their physical parameters must be known in advance. In this work, we detail the process of building a photometric database of all the stars brighter than V=8.0 mag in the field of view of COROT and the process of selecting suitable delta Scuti and gamma Dor-type stars for the mission.

Preparing the COROT space mission: incidence and characterisation of pulsation in the Lower Instability Strip

By pursuing the goal to find new variables in the COROT field-of-view we characterised a sample of stars located in the lower part of the instability strip. Our sample is composed of stars belonging to the disk population in the solar neighbourhood. We found that 23% of the stars display multiperiodic light variability up to few mmag of amplitude. uvbyBeta photometry fixed most of the variables in the middle of the instability strip and high-resolution spectroscopy established that they have vsin i>100 km/s. The comparison with delta Sct stars in the whole Galaxy shows slightly different features, i.e., most delta Sct stars have a 0.05-mag redder (b-y)_0 index and lower vsin i values. Additional investigation in the open cluster NGC 6633 confirms the same incidence of variability, i.e., around 20%. The wide variety of pulsational behaviours of delta Sct stars (including unusual objects such as a variable beyond the blue edge or a rapidly rotating high-amplitude pulsator) makes them very powerful asteroseismic tools to be used by COROT. Being quite common among bright stars, delta Sct stars are suitable targets for optical observations from space.

A study of correlation between the oscillation amplitude and stellar parameters for delta Scuti stars in open clusters. Toward selection rules for delta Scuti stars oscillations

In the present work, we study correlations between stellar fundamental parameters and the oscillation amplitude for delta Scuti stars. We present this study for a sample of 17 selected delta Scuti stars belonging to 5 young open clusters. Taking advantage of properties of delta Scuti stars in clusters, we correct the photometric parameters of our objects for the effect of fast rotation. We confirm the benefit of applying such corrections in this kind of studies. In addition, the technique used for this correction allows us to obtain an estimation of stellar parameters like the angle of inclination and the rotation rate, usually not accessible. A significant correlation between the parameter i' (estimation of the angle of inclination of the star) and the oscillation amplitude is found. A discussion and interpretation of these a priori surprising results is proposed, in terms of a possible selection rule for oscillation modes of delta Scuti stars.

A study of convection with delta Scuti stars in open clusters: Pleiades

In this work we propose a preliminary seismic investigation of $δ$ Scuti stars in the Pleiades cluster, focusing on potential diagnostics of convection and core-overshooting. Taking into account the effect of fast rotation in the modelling, we compare observed frequencies for 4 $δ$ Scuti stars with radial linear instability predictions. A satisfying agreement is reached between the predicted ranges of unstable modes and those derived from observations for ``low-mass'' stars ($\sim 1.55 M_{\odot}$). However, a strong disagreement is found for ``high-mass'' stars ($\sim 1.77 M_{\odot}$), whatever the mixing length $(α)$ value. These results are compared with previous ones obtained for Praesepe.

A transient network of telechelic polymers and microspheres : structure and rheology

We study the structure and dynamics of a transient network composed of droplets of microemulsion connected by telechelic polymers. The polymer induces a bridging attraction between droplets without changing their shape. A viscoelastic behaviour is induced in the initially liquid solution, characterised in the linear regime by a stretched exponential stress relaxation. We analyse this relaxation in the light of classical theories of transient networks. The role of the elastic reorganisations in the deformed network is emphasized. In the non linear regime, a fast relaxation dynamics is followed by a second one having the same rate as in the linear regime. This behaviour, under step strain experiments, should induce a non monotonic behaviour in the elastic component of the stress under constant shear rate. However, we obtain in this case a singularity in the flow curve very different from the one observed in other systems, that we interpret in terms of fracture behaviour.
