Phase Diagram of the Two-Leg Kondo Ladder

The phase diagram of the two-leg Kondo ladder is investigated using computational techniques. Ferromagnetism is present, but only at small conduction electron densities and robust Kondo coupling $J$. For densities $n\gtrsim0.4$ and any Kondo coupling, a paramagnetic phase is found. We also observed spin dimerization at densities $n$=1/4 and $n$=1/2. The spin structure factor at small $J$ peaks at $\vec{q}$=$(2n,0)π$ for $n\lesssim0.5$, and at $\vec{q}$=$(n,1)π$ for $n\gtrsim0.5$. The charge structure factor suggests that electrons behave as free particles with spin-1/2 (spin-0) for small (large) $J$.

Random Antiferromagnetic SU(N) Spin Chains

We analyze random isotropic antiferromagnetic SU(N) spin chains using the real space renormalization group. We find that they are governed at low energies by a universal infinite randomness fixed point different from the one of random spin-1/2 chains. We determine analytically the important exponents: the energy-length scale relation is $Ω\sim\exp(-L^ψ)$, where $ψ=1/N$, and the mean correlation function is given by $\bar{C_{ij}}\sim(-1)^{i-j}/|i-j|^ϕ$, where $ϕ=4/N$. Our analysis shows that the infinite-N limit is unable to capture the behavior obtained at any finite N.

Effective model of the electronic Griffiths phase

We present simple analytical arguments explaining the universal emergence of electronic Griffiths phases as precursors of disorder-driven metal-insulator transitions in correlated electronic systems. A simple effective model is constructed and solved within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. It is shown to capture all the qualitative and even quantitative aspects of such Griffiths phases.

Correlation exponent K_rho of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

We present results for the correlation exponent K_rho of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice as a function of conduction electron density and coupling constant. It is obtained from the first derivative of the Fourier transform of the charge-charge correlation function. We also show that the spin correlation function can only be described in this picture if we include logarithmic corrections, a feature that had been previously overlooked. A consistent description of both charge and spin sectors is then obtained. Finally, we show evidence that the spin sector of the dimerized phase at quarter-filling is gapless.

Phase diagrams and universality classes of random antiferromagnetic spin ladders

The random antiferromagnetic two-leg and zigzag spin-1/2 ladders are investigated using the real space renormalization group scheme and their complete phase diagrams are determined. We demonstrate that the first system belongs to the same universality class of the dimerized random spin-1/2 chain. The zigzag ladder, on the other hand, is in a random singlet phase at weak frustration and disorder. Otherwise, we give additional evidence that it belongs to the universality class of the random antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic quantum spin chains, although the universal fixed point found in the latter system is never realized. We find, however, a new universal fixed point at intermediate disorder.

Domain wall scattering in an interacting one-dimensional electron gas

We study the transport in a Luttinger liquid coupled to a magnetic chain containing a Bloch domain wall. We compute the leading correction to the adiabatic limit of a long domain wall, which causes no scattering. We show that the problem is reminiscent of an impurity in a Luttinger liquid, but with a different dependence on the interaction parameters due to spin-flip scattering. For repulsive interactions, we find that the domain wall resistance diverges with decreasing temperature. This may be relevant for the design of one-dimensional systems with large magnetoresistance at low temperatures.

Temperature dependent transport of correlated disordered electrons: elastic vs. inelastic scattering

Temperature dependent transport of disordered electronic systems is examined in the presence of strong correlations. In contrast to what is assumed in Fermi liquid approaches, finite temperature behavior in this regime proves largely dominated by inelastic electron-electron scattering. This conclusion is valid in the strong coupling limit, where the disorder, the correlations and the Fermi energy are all comparable, as in many materials near the metal-insulator transition.

Localization effects and inelastic scattering in disordered heavy electrons

We study ground state and finite temperature properties of disordered heavy fermion metals by using a generalization of dynamical mean field theory which incorporates Anderson localization effects. The emergence of a non-Fermi liquid metallic behavior even at moderate disorder is shown to be a universal phenomenon resulting from local density of states fluctuations. This behavior is found to have a character of an electronic Griffiths phase, and can be thought of as a precursor of Anderson localization in a strongly correlated host. The temperature dependence of the conducting properties of the system reveal a non-trivial interplay between disorder and inelastic processes, which is reminiscent of the Mooij correlations observed in many disordered metals.

Dimerization induced by the RKKY interaction

We report the presence of spin dimerization in the ground state of the one dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling. The emergence of this new phase of the Kondo lattice can be traced to the form of the RKKY interaction between the localized moments and provides the first example of dimerization induced indirectly by itinerant electrons. We propose this dimer ordering as the driving mechanism of the spin-Peierls phase observed in the quasi-one-dimensional organic compounds (Per)$_{2}$M(mnt)$_{2}$ (M=Pt, Pd). Moreover, this suggests that a richer phase diagram than the Doniach paradigm may be needed to accommodate the physics of heavy fermion materials.

Small Fermi surface in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

We study the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model through the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our results for the spin correlation function indicate the presence of a small Fermi surface in large portions of the phase diagram, in contrast to some previous studies that used the same technique. We argue that the discrepancy is due to the open boundary conditions, which introduce strong charge perturbations that strongly affect the spin Friedel oscillations.

A Coulomb gas approach to the anisotropic one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at arbitrary filling

We establish a mapping of a general spin-fermion system in one dimension into a classical generalized Coulomb gas. This mapping allows a renormalization group treatment of the anisotropic Kondo chain both at and away from half-filling. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism, partial and full ferromagnetic order. We also use the method to analyze the phases of the Ising-Kondo chain.

Luttinger liquid superlattices: realization of gapless insulating phases

We investigate Luttinger Liquid superlattices, a periodic structure composed of two kinds of one-dimensional systems of interacting electrons. We calculate several properties of the low-energy sector: the effective charge and spin velocities, the compressibility, various correlation functions, the Landauer conductance and the Drude weight. The low-energy properties are subsumed into effective parameters, much like homogeneous one-dimensional systems. A generic result is the weighted average nature of these parameters, in proportion to the spatial extent of the underlying subunits, pointing to the possibility of ``engineered'' structures. As a specific realization, we consider a one-dimensional Hubbard superlattice, which consists of a periodic arrangement of two long Hubbard chains with different coupling constants and different hopping amplitudes. This system exhibits a rich phase diagram with several phases, both metallic and insulating. We have found that gapless insulating phases are present over a wide range of parameters.

Phase diagram of the anisotropic Kondo chain

We establish the phase diagram of the one-dimensional anisotropic Kondo lattice model at T=0 using a generalized two-dimensional classical Coulomb gas description. We analyze the problem by means of a renormalization group (RG) treatment. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism, partial and full ferromagnetic order.

Luttinger liquid superlattices

We calculate the correlation functions and the DC conductivity of Luttinger liquid superlattices, modeled by a repeated pattern of interacting and free Luttinger liquids. In a specific realization, where the interacting subsystem is a Hubbard chain, the system exhibits a rich phase diagram with four different phases: two metals and two compressible insulators. In general, we find that the effective low energy description amalgamates features of both types of liquids in proportion to their spatial extent, suggesting the interesting possibility of `engineered' Luttinger liquids.

Localization-induced Griffiths phase of disordered Anderson lattices

We demonstrate that local density of states fluctuations in disordered Anderson lattice models universally lead to the emergence of non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior. The NFL regime appears at moderate disorder (W = W_c) and is characterized by power-law anomalies, e. g. C/T ~ 1/T^{(1-α)}, where the exponent αvaries continuously with disorder, as in other Griffiths phases. This Griffiths phase is not associated with the proximity to any magnetic ordering, but reflects the approach to a disorder-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT). Remarkably, the MIT takes place only at much larger disorder W_{MIT} ~ 12 W_c, resulting in an extraordinarily robust NFL metallic phase.

Griffiths phase of the Kondo insulator fixed point

Heavy fermion compounds have long been identified as systems which are extremely sensitive to the presence of impurities and other imperfections. In recent years, both experimental and theoretical work has demonstrated that such disorder can lead to unusual, non-Fermi liquid behavior for most physical quantities. In this paper, we show that this anomalous sensitivity to disorder, as well as the resulting Griffiths phase behavior, directly follow from the proximity of metallic heavy fermion systems to the Kondo insulator fixed point.

Localization effects in disordered Kondo lattices

We investigate the role of localization effects in the Kondo disorder mechanism for non-Fermi liquid behavior in disordered Kondo lattices. We find that the distribution of Kondo temperatures is strongly affected by fluctuations of the conduction electron density of states, a feature neglected in the previous treatment. For moderate disorder, the self-consistent distribution of Kondo temperatures flows to a universal log-normal form, irrespective of the form of the bare disorder distribution. For sufficient disorder, the system enters a Griffiths phase with diverging thermodynamic responses.

Solution of the X-ray edge problem for 2D electrons in a magnetic field

The absorption and emission spectra of transitions between a localized level and a two-dimensional electron gas, subjected to a weak magnetic field, are calculated analytically. Adopting the Landau level bosonization technique developed in previous papers, we find an exact expression for the relative intensities of spectral lines. Their envelope function, governed by the interaction between the electron gas and the core hole, is reminescent of the famous Fermi edge singularity, which is recovered in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field.
