Band Narrowing and Mott Localization in Iron Oxychalcogenides La2O2Fe2O(Se,S)2

Bad metal properties have motivated a description of the parent iron pnictides as correlated metals on the verge of Mott localization. What has been unclear is whether interactions can push these and related compounds to the Mott insulating side of the phase diagram. Here we consider the iron oxychalcogenides La2O2Fe2O(Se,S)2, which contain an Fe square lattice with an expanded unit cell. We show theoretically that they contain enhanced correlation effects through band narrowing compared to LaOFeAs, and we provide experimental evidence that they are Mott insulators with moderate charge gaps. We also discuss the magnetic properties in terms of a Heisenberg model with frustrating J1-J2-J2' exchange interactions on a "doubled" checkerboard lattice.

Local-moment ferromagnetism and unusual magnetic domains in Fe$_{1/4}$TaS$_{2}$ crystals

Single crystals of Fe$_{1/4}$TaS$_{2}$ have been studied by using magneto-optical (MO) imaging and radio-frequency (rf) magnetic susceptibility, $χ$. Real time MO images reveal unusual, slow dynamics of dendritic domain formation, the details of which are strongly dependent upon magnetic and thermal history. Measurements of $χ(T)$ show well-defined, local moment ferromagnetic transition at $T\approx 155$ K as well as thermal hysteresis for 50 K$<T<$60 K. This temperature range corresponds to the domain formation temperature as determined by MO. Together these observations provide strong evidence for local moment ferromagnetism in Fe$_{1/4}$TaS$_{2}$ crystals with large, temperature dependent magnetic anisotropy.

Fermi liquid state and enhanced electron correlations in the new iron pnictide CaFe$_4$As$_3$

The newly discovered CaFe$_4$As$_3$ system displays low-temperature Fermi liquid behavior, with enhanced electron-electron correlations. At high temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility shows Curie-Weiss behavior, with a large temperature-independent contribution. Antiferromagnetic ordering is observed below T$_N$ = (88.0 $\pm$ 1.0) K, possibly via a spin density wave (SDW) transition. A remarkably sharp drop in resistivity occurs below T$_2$ = (26.4 $\pm$ 1.0) K, correlated with a similarly abrupt increase in the susceptibility, but no visible feature in the specific heat. The electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ at low temperatures is close to 0.02 J mol$^{-1}_{Fe}$ K$^{-2}$, but a higher value for $γ$ ($\sim$0.08 J mol$^{-1}_{Fe}$ K$^{-2}$ can be inferred from a linear C$ / $T \textit{vs.} T$^2$ just above T$_2$. The Kadowaki-Woods ratio A$/γ^2$ = 55$*10^{-5}$ $μΩ$cm mol$^2$ K$^2 $mJ$^{-2}$ is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of heavy fermions.

Structure and magnetic properties of the Ho2Ge2O7 pyrogermanate

We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of Ho2Ge2O7 determined from dc and ac magnetization, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction experiments. The magnetic lanthanide sublattice, seen in our refinement of the tetragonal pyrogermanate crystal structure, is a right-handed spiral of edge-sharing and corner-sharing triangles; the local Ho-O coordination indicates that the crystal field is anisotropic. Susceptibility and magnetization data indeed show that the magnetism is highly anisotropic, and the magnetic structure has the Ho moments confined to the plane perpendicular to the structural spiral. The ordered moment of Ho3+, as determined from refinement of the neutron diffraction data, is 9.0 mu_B. Magnetic ordering occurs around 1.6 K. Temperature and field dependent ac susceptibility measurements show that this compound displays spin relaxation phenomena analogous to what is seen in the spin ice pyrochlore system Ho2Ti2O7.

Magnetothermodynamics of the Ising Antiferromagnet Dy2Ge2O7

We report systematic low temperature measurements of the DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, and heat capacity of dysprosium pyrogermanate (Dy2Ge2O7) single crystal and powder samples. Our results confirm that Dy2Ge2O7 is an anisotropic antiferromagnet. The isothermal field dependent magnetization and the integrated magnetic entropy both indicate that the Dy3+ ions behave as Ising-like spins, analogous to those in the pyrochlore spin ice materials. Both single-spin and collective spin relaxation phenomena appear to lead to spin freezing in this material, again in analogy to observations in the spin ice materials, suggesting that such phenomena may be generic to a broader class of magnetic materials.

Tuning the Charge Density Wave and Superconductivity in CuxTaS2

We report the characterization of layered, 2H-type CuxTaS2, for x between 0 and 0.12. The charge density wave (CDW), at 70 K for TaS2, is destabilized with Cu doping. The sub-1K superconducting transition in undoped 2H-TaS2 jumps quickly to 2.5 K at low x, increases to 4.5 K at the optimal composition Cu0.04TaS2, and then decreases at higher x. The electronic contribution to the specific heat, first increasing and then decreasing as a function of Cu content, is 12 mJ mol-1 K-2 at Cu0.04TaS2. Electron diffraction studies show that the CDW remains present at the optimal superconducting composition, but with both a changed q vector and decreased coherence length. We present an electronic phase diagram for the system.

Evidence for the band broadening across the ferromagnetic transition in Cr$_{1/3}$NbSe$_2$

The electronic structure of Cr$_{1/3}$NbSe$_2$ is studied via optical spectroscopy. We observe two low-energy interband transitions in the paramagnetic phase, which split into four peaks as the compound enters the ferromagnetic state. The band structure calculation indicates the four peaks are interband transitions to the spin up Cr e$_g$ states. We show that the peak splitting below the Curie temperature is \emph{not} due to the exchange splitting of spin up and down bands, but directly reflects a band broadening effect in Cr-derived states upon the spontaneous ferromagnetic ordering.

Quantum and classical mode softening near the charge-density-wave/superconductor transition of Cu$_{x}$TiSe$_{2}$: Raman spectroscopic studies

Temperature- and x-dependent Raman scattering studies of the charge density wave (CDW) amplitude modes in CuxTiSe2 show that the amplitude mode frequency omega_o exhibits identical power-law scaling with the reduced temperature, T/T_CDW, and the reduced Cu content, x/x_c, i.e., omega_o ~ (1 - p)^0.15 for p = T/T_CDW or x/x_c, suggesting that mode softening is independent of the control parameter used to approach the CDW transition. We provide evidence that x-dependent mode softening in CuxTiSe2 is caused by the reduction of the electron-phonon coupling constant lambda due to expansion of the lattice, and that x-dependent `quantum' (T ~ 0) mode softening reveals a quantum critical point within the superconductor phase of CuxTiSe2.

Crystal Structure and Physical Properties of Mg6Cu16Si7-type M6Ni16Si7, for M = Mg, Sc, Ti, Nb, and Ta

Five compounds were investigated for magnetic character and superconductivity, all with non-magnetic nickel and band structures containing flat bands and steep bands. The syntheses and crystal structures, refined by powder X-ray diffraction, are reported for M6Ni16Si7, where M = Mg, Sc, Ti, Nb, and Ta. All compounds form in the Mg6Cu16Si7 structure type. Resistance measurements are also reported on M6Ni16Si7 (M = Mg, Sc, Ti, and Nb) down to 0.3 K, with all four showing metallic conductivity. No superconductivity is observed. Magnetization measurements for all compounds reveal essentially temperature independent paramagnetism, with a tendency toward more enhanced low temperature paramagnetism for the cases of Mg6Ni16Si7 and Sc6Ni16Si7.

The anomalous Hall Effect and magnetoresistance in the layered ferromagnet Fe_{1/4}TaS_2: the inelastic regime

The large magnetic anisotropy in the layered ferromagnet Fe_{1/4}TaS_2 leads to very sharp reversals of the magnetization $\bf M$ at the coercive field. We have exploited this feature to measure the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), focussing on the AHE conductivity $σ^A_{xy}$ in the inelastic regime. At low temperature T (5-50 K), $σ^A_{xy}$ is T-independent, consistent with the Berry-phase/Karplus-Luttinger theory. Above 50 K, we extract an inelastic AHE conductivity $σ^{in}_{xy}$ that scales as the square of $Δρ$ (the T dependent part of the resistivity $ρ$). The term $σ^{in}_{xy}$ clarifies the T dependence and sign-reversal of the AHE coefficient R_s(T). We discuss the possible ubiquity of $σ^{in}_{xy}$ in ferromagnets, and ideas for interpreting its scaling with $(Δρ)^2$. Measurements of the magnetoresistance (MR) reveal a rich pattern of behavior vs. T and field tilt-angle. We show that the 2 mechanisms, the anisotropic MR effect and field-suppression of magnons, account for the intricate MR behavior, including the bow-tie features caused by the sharp reversals in $\bf M$.

Anomalous metallic state of Cu$_{0.07}$TiSe$_2$: an optical spectroscopy study

We report an optical spectroscopy study on the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_{0.07}$TiSe$_2$. Consistent with the development from a semimetal or semiconductor with a very small indirect energy gap upon doping TiSe$_2$, it is found that the compound has a low carrier density. Most remarkably, the study reveals a substantial shift of the "screened" plasma edge in reflectance towards high energy with decreasing temperature. This phenomenon, rarely seen in metals, indicates either a sizeable increase of the conducting carrier concentration or/and a decrease of the effective mass of carriers with reducing temperature. We attribute the shift primarily to the later effect.

Semimetal to semimetal charge density wave transition in 1T-TiSe$_2$

We report an infrared study on 1$T$-TiSe$_2$, the parent compound of the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$. Previous studies of this compound have not conclusively resolved whether it is a semimetal or a semiconductor: information that is important in determining the origin of its unconventional CDW transition. Here we present optical spectroscopy results that clearly reveal that the compound is metallic in both the high-temperature normal phase and the low-temperature CDW phase. The carrier scattering rate is dramatically different in the normal and CDW phases and the carrier density is found to change with temperature. We conclude that the observed properties can be explained within the scenario of an Overhauser-type CDW mechanism.

Rich magnetic phase diagram in the Kagome-staircase compound Mn3V2O8

Mn3V2O8 is a magnetic system in which S = 5/2 Mn2+ is found in the kagome staircase lattice. Here we report the magnetic phase diagram for temperatures above 2 K and applied magnetic fields below 9 T, characterized by measurements of the magnetization and specific heat with field along the three unique lattice directions. At low applied magnetic fields, the system first orders magnetically below Tm1 ~ 21 K, and then shows a second magnetic phase transition at Tm2 ~ 15 K. In addition, a phase transition that is apparent in specific heat but not seen in magnetization is found for all three applied field orientations, converging towards Tm2 as H -> 0. The magnetic behavior is highly anisotropic, with critical fields for magnetic phase boundaries much higher when the field is applied perpendicular to the Kagome staircase plane than when applied in-plane. The field-temperature (H - T) phase diagrams are quite rich, with 7 distinct phases observed.

Thermal expansion and effect of pressure on superconductivity in CuxTiSe2

We report measurements of thermal expansion on a number of polycrystalline CuxTiSe2 samples corresponding to the parts of x - T phase diagram with different ground states, as well as the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature for samples with three different values of Cu-doping. Thermal expansion data suggest that the x - T phase diagram may be more complex than initially reported. T_c data at elevated pressure can be scaled to the ambient pressure CuxTiSe2 phase diagram, however, significantly different scaling factors are needed to accommodate the literature data on the charge density wave transition suppression under pressure.

Sharp switching of the magnetization in Fe1/4TaS2

Anisotropic magneto-transport measurements are reported on Fe1/4TaS2 single crystals grown by vapor transport. Both the magnetization and resistivity are extremely anisotropic, with the magnetic moments aligned parallel to the c crystallographic direction. Fe1/4TaS2 orders ferromagnetically below TC = 160 K and displays very sharp hysteresis loops in the ordered state for H||c. The corresponding magnetoresistance is negative, and it qualitatively reproduces the features observed in the M(H) data, by showing a sharp drop around the critical field Hs for the moment reversal. The magnetization switching time shows an unusual increase with increasing temperature. For field applied within the ab plane, the magnetization remains small and linear in field up to 5 T, and the magnetoresistance is positive and quadratic in field, with no visible hysteresis. The squareness of the H||c M(H) loops and the high critical field for the magnetization switch (Hs = 3.7 T at T = 2 K) allow us to classify Fe1/4TaS2 as a strong ferromagnet.

Emergence of Fermi pockets in an excitonic CDW melted novel superconductor

A superconducting (SC) state (Tc ~ 4.2K) has very recently been observed upon successful doping of the CDW ordered triangular lattice TiSe$_2$, with copper. Using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy we identify, for the first time, the momentum space locations of the doped electrons that form the Fermi sea of the parent superconductor. With doping, we find that the kinematic nesting volume increases whereas the coherence of the CDW order sharply drops. In the superconducting doping, we observe the emergence of a large density of states in the form of a narrow electron pocket near the \textit{L}-point of the Brillouin Zone with \textit{d}-like character. The \textit{k}-space electron distributions highlight the unconventional interplay of CDW to SC cross-over achieved through non-magnetic copper doping.

Separation of energy scales in the kagome antiferromagnet TmAgGe: a magnetic-field-orientation study up to 55 T

TmAgGe is an antiferromagnet in which the spins are confined to distorted kagome-like planes at low temperatures. We report angle-dependent measurements of the magnetization $M$ in fields of up to 55 T that show that there are two distinct and separate energy scales present in TmAgGe, each responsible for a set of step-like metamagnetic transitions; weak exchange interactions and strong crystalline electric field (CEF) interactions. Simulations of $M$ using a three-dimensional, free-energy minimization technique allow us to specify for the first time the physical origin of the metamagnetic transitions in low, in-plane fields. We also show that the transitions observed with the field perpendicular to the kagome planes are associated with the CEF-split multiplet of Tm.

Anisotropic properties of the layered superconductor Cu0.07TiSe2

The anisotropic superconducting properties of single crystals of Cu0.07TiSe2 were studied by measurements of magnetization and electrical resistivity. TC is around 3.9 K, and the measured upper critical field (Hc2) values are ~1.25 T and 0.8 T, for applied field parallel and perpendicular to the TiSe2 planes, respectively. The anisotropy ratio gamma_anis = H^ab_c2 / H^c_c2 is close to 1.6 and nearly temperature independent. The lower critical field (Hc1) values are much smaller (~ 32 Oe for H||ab and 17 Oe for H||c); demagnetizing corrections for field perpendicular to the thin plate crystals are required for the determination of H^c_c1. The anisotropy of the critical fields is described well by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, and the characteristic GL parameters are determined and discussed.
