MoEDAL search in the CMS beam pipe for magnetic monopoles produced via the Schwinger effect

We report on a search for magnetic monopoles (MMs) produced in ultraperipheral Pb--Pb collisions during Run-1 of the LHC. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region of the CMS experiment was exposed to 184.07 \textmu b$^{-1}$ of Pb--Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV center-of-mass energy per collision in December 2011, before being removed in 2013. It was scanned by the MoEDAL experiment using a SQUID magnetometer to search for trapped MMs. No MM signal was observed. The two distinctive features of this search are the use of a trapping volume very close to the collision point and ultra-high magnetic fields generated during the heavy-ion run that could produce MMs via the Schwinger effect. These two advantages allowed setting the first reliable, world-leading mass limits on MMs with high magnetic charge. In particular, the established limits are the strongest available in the range between 2 and 45 Dirac units, excluding MMs with masses of up to 80 GeV at 95\% confidence level.

Exploring hidden sectors with two-particle angular correlations at future $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders

Future $e^+e^-$ colliders are expected to play a fundamental role in measuring Standard Model (SM) parameters with unprecedented precision and in probing physics beyond the SM (BSM). This study investigates two-particle angular correlation distributions involving final-state SM charged hadrons. Unexpected correlation structures in these distributions is considered to be a hint for new physics perturbing the QCD partonic cascade and thereby modifying azimuthal and (pseudo)rapidity correlations. Using Pythia8 Monte Carlo generator and fast simulation, including selection cuts and detector effects, we study potential structures in the two-particle angular correlation function. We adopt the QCD-like Hidden Valley (HV) scenario as implemented in Pythia8 generator, with relatively light HV $v$-quarks (below about 100 GeV), to illustrate the potential of this method.

Two-particle angular correlations in the search for new physics at future $e^+e^-$ colliders

The analysis of angular particle correlations can yield valuable insights into the initial state of matter in high-energy collisions, thereby potentially revealing the existence of Beyond the Standard Model scenarios such as Hidden Valley (HV). In this study, we focus on a QCD-like hidden sector with relatively massive HV quarks ($\lesssim 100$~GeV) which might enlarge and strengthen azimuthal correlations of final-state SM hadrons. In particular, we study the formation and possible observation of \textit{ridge-like} structures in the angular two-particle correlation function at future $e^+e^-$ colliders, with a much cleaner environment than in hadron colliders, such as the LHC.
