Effective Nucleon Masses in Symmetric and Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

The momentum and isospin dependence of the in-medium nucleon mass are studied. Two definitions of the effective mass, i.e. the Dirac mass $m^*_D$ and the nonrelativistic mass $m^*_{NR}$ which parameterizes the energy spectrum, are compared. Both masses are determined from relativistic Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations. The nonrelativistic mass shows a distinct peak around the Fermi momentum. The proton-neutron mass splitting in isospin asymmetric matter is $m^*_{D,n} m^*_{NR,p}$, which is consistent with nonrelativistic approaches.

The Relativistic Dirac-Brueckner Approach to Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

The properties of asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in a relativistic Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework using the Bonn A potential. The components of the self-energies are extracted by projecting on Lorentz invariant amplitudes. Furthermore, the optimal representation scheme for the $T$ matrix, the subtracted $T$ matrix representation, is applied and the results are compared to those of other representation schemes. Of course, in the limit of symmetric nuclear matter our results agree with those found in literature. The binding energy $E_b$ fulfills the quadratic dependence on the asymmetry parameter and the symmetry energy is 34 MeV at saturation density. Furthermore, a neutron-proton effective mass splitting of $m_n^* < m_p^*$ is found. In addition, results are given for the mean-field effective coupling constants.

Bulk Viscosity in Neutron Stars from Hyperons

The contribution from hyperons to the bulk viscosity of neutron star matter is calculated. Compared to previous works we use for the weak interaction the one-pion exchange model rather than a current-current interaction, and include the neutral current $nn \leftrightarrow nΛ$ process. Also the sensitivity to details of the equation of state is examined. Compared to previous works we find that the contribution from hyperons to the bulk viscosity is about two orders of magnitude smaller.

Neutrino emission in neutron stars

Neutrino emissivities in a neutron star are computed for the neutrino bremsstrahlung process. In the first part the electro-weak nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is calculated in free space in terms of a on-shell $T$-matrix using a generalized Low energy theorem. In the second part the emissivities are calculated in terms of the hadronic polarization at the two-loop level. Various medium effects, such as finite particle width, Pauli blocking in the $T$-matrix are considered. Compared to the pioneering work of Friman and Maxwell in terms of (anti-symmetrized) one-pion exchange the resulting emissivity is about a factor 4 smaller at saturation density.

Cooling of Neutron Stars Revisited: Application of Low Energy Theorems

Cooling of neutrons stars proceeds mainly via neutrino emission; As an example we study the modified neutrino bremsstrahlung process $nn \to nnν\barν.$ The radiated energy is small compared to other scales in the system. Hence one can use low-energy theorems to compute the neutrino emissivity in terms of the non-radiative process, ie the on-shell $T$ matrix. We find that the use of the $T-$matrix as compared to previous estimates based upon one pion exchange leads a substantial reduction of the predicted emissivity.

Neutrino-pair emission in a strong magnetic field

We study the neutrino emissivity of strongly magnetized neutron stars due to the charged and neutral current couplings of neutrinos to baryons in strong magnetic fields. The leading order neutral current process is the one-body neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung, which does not have an analogue in the zero field limit. The leading order charged current reaction is the known generalization of the direct Urca processes to strong magnetic fields. While for superstrong magnetic fields in excess of $10^{18}$ G the direct Urca process dominates the one-body bremsstrahlung, we find that for fields on the order $10^{16}-10^{17}$ G and temperatures a few times $10^9$ K the one-body bremsstrahlung is the dominant process. Numerical computation of the resulting emissivity, based on a simple parametrization of the equation of state of the $npe$-matter in a strong magnetic field, shows that the emissivity of this reaction is of the same order of magnitude as that of the modified Urca process in the zero field limit.
