Gravitation radiation observations

The notion of gravitational radiation begins with electromagnetic radiation. In 1887 Heinrich Hertz, working in one room, generated and received electromagnetic radiation. Maxwell's equations describe the electromagnetic field. The quanta of electromagnetic radiation are spin 1 photons. They are fundamental to atomic physics and quantum electrodynamics.

Generalized Inheritance

Generalized inheritance is used with the almost-conformal Killing equation. Examples are the flat FRW, Kasner, and deSitter metrics. The volume changes in FRW while transitioning to a stiff fluid are discussed. An inheritance current is implicit in the generalized condition

Relativistic Bessel Cylinders

A set of cylindrical solutions to Einstein's field equations for power law densities is described. The solutions have a Bessel function contribution to the metric. For matter cylinders regular on axis, the first two solutions are the constant density Gott-Hiscock string and a cylinder with a metric Airy function. All members of this family have the Vilenkin limit to their mass per length. Some examples of Bessel shells and Bessel motion are given.

Generating Anisotropic Collapse and Expansion Solutions of Einstein's Equations

Analytic gravitational collapse and expansion solutions with anisotropic pressure are generated. Metric functions are found by requiring zero heat flow scalar. It emerges that a single function generates the anisotropic solutions. Each generating function contains an arbitrary function of time which can be chosen to fit various astrophysical time profiles. Two examples are provided: a bounded collapse metric and an expanding cosmological solution

Two Fluid Shear-Free Composites

Shear-free composite fluids are constructed from two Letelier rotated unaligned perfect fluids. The component fluid parameters necessary to construct a shear-free composite are investigated. A metric in the Stephani-Barnes solution family and a simple stationary metric are discussed.

Killing-Yano tensors in spaces admitting a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector

Methods are presented for finding Killing-Yano tensors, conformal Killing-Yano tensors, and conformal Killing vectors in spacetimes with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. These methods are similar to a method developed by the authors for finding Killing tensors. In all cases one decomposes both the tensor and the equation it satisfies into pieces along the Killing vector and pieces orthogonal to the Killing vector. Solving the separate equations that result from this decomposition requires less computing than integrating the original equation. In each case, examples are given to illustrate the method.

Velocity and Heat Flow in a Composite Two Fluid System

We describe the stress energy of a fluid with two unequal stresses and heat flow in terms of two perfect fluid components. The description is in terms of the fluid velocity overlap of the components, and makes no assumptions about the equations of state of the perfect fluids. The description is applied to the metrics of a conformally flat system and a black string.

Levi-Civita cylinders with fractional angular deficit

The angular deficit factor in the Levi-Civita vacuum metric has been parametrized using a Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. This introduces a new parameter into the general relativistic cylinder description, the fractional index α. When the fractional index is continued into the negative α region, new behavior is found in the Gott-Hiscock cylinder and in an Israel shell.

Gravothermal Catastrophe, an Example

This work discusses gravothermal catastrophe in astrophysical systems and provides an analytic collapse solution which exhibits many of the catastrophe properties. The system collapses into a trapped surface with outgoing energy radiated to a future boundary, and provides an example of catastrophic collapse.

Killing Tensors and Symmetries

A new method is presented for finding Killing tensors in spacetimes with symmetries. The method is used to find all the Killing tensors of Melvin's magnetic universe and the Schwarzschild vacuum. We show that they are all trivial. The method requires less computation than solving the full Killing tensor equations directly, and it can be used even when the spacetime is not algebraically special.

Counter-rotating Kerr manifolds separated by a fluid shell

We describe a spheroidal fluid shell between two Kerr vacuum regions which have opposite rotation parameters. The shell has a stiff equation of state and a heat flow vector related to the rotational Killing current. The shell description is useful in exploring the significance of counter-rotation in Kerr metric matches.

Killing vectors and anisotropy

We consider an action that can generate fluids with three unequal stresses for metrics with a spacelike Killing vector. The parameters in the action are directly related to the stress anisotropies. The field equations following from the action are applied to an anisotropic cosmological expansion and an extension of the Gott-Hiscock cosmic string.

Thin Shell Dynamics and Equations of State

A relation between stress-energy and motion is derived for accelerated Israel layers. The relation, for layers between two Schwarzschild manifolds, generalizes the equation of state for geodesic collapse. A set of linked layers is discussed.

Acceleration and Classical Electromagnetic Radiation

Classical radiation from an accelerated charge is reviewed along with the reciprocal topic of accelerated observers detecting radiation from a static charge. This review commemerates Bahram Mashhoon's 60th birthday.

Collapsing Layers on Schwarzschild-Lemaitre Geodesics

We discuss Israel layers collapsing inward from rest at infinity along Schwarzschild-Lemaitre geodesics. The dynamics of the collapsing layer and its equation of state are developed. There is a general equation of state which is approximately polytropic in the limit of very low pressure. The equation of state establishes a new limit on the stress-density ratio.

Magnetovac Cylinder to Magnetovac Torus

A method for mapping known cylindrical magnetovac solutions to solutions in torus coordinates is developed. Identification of the cylinder ends changes topology from R1 x S1 to S1 x S1. An analytic Einstein-Maxwell solution for a toroidal magnetic field in tori is presented. The toroidal interior is matched to an asymptotically flat vacuum exterior, connected by an Israel boundary layer.

Fractional Boundaries for Fluid Spheres

A single Israel layer can be created when two metrics adjoin with no continuous metric derivative across the boundary. The properties of the layer depend only on the two metrics it separates. By using a fractional derivative match, a family of Israel layers can be created between the same two metrics. The family is indexed by the order of the fractional derivative. The method is applied to Tolman IV and V interiors and a Schwarzschild vacuum exterior. The method creates new ranges of modeling parameters for fluid spheres. A thin shell analysis clarifies pressure/tension in the family of boundary layers.
