First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Vacuum fluctuations and the thermodynamics of chiral models

We consider the thermodynamics of chiral models in the mean-field approximation and discuss the relevance of the (frequently omitted) fermion vacuum loop. Within the chiral quark-meson model and its Polyakov loop extended version, we show that the fermion vacuum fluctuations can change the order of the phase transition in the chiral limit and strongly influence physical observables. We compute the temperature-dependent effective potential and baryon number susceptibilities in these models, with and without the vacuum term, and explore the cutoff and the pion mass dependence of the susceptibilities. Finally, in the renormalized model the divergent vacuum contribution is removed using the dimensional regularization.

Fluctuations and isentropes near the chiral critical endpoint

Isentropic trajectories crossing the chiral phase transition near the critical endpoint (CEP) are studied for two light quark flavors. The calculations are performed within an effective chiral model with quark-meson interactions, belonging to the same universality class as QCD. We confront mean-field thermodynamics with the functional renormalization group approach, where fluctuations are properly taken into account. We establish a connection between modifications of the isentropic trajectories found in mean-field calculations at the crossover transition near the CEP and the order of the phase transition in the chiral limit. Furthermore, the isentropes obtained with the renormalization group are completely smooth at the crossover transition and do not in any way reflect the proximity of the CEP. In particular, our results do not show the recently conjectured focussing of isentropes from the crossover region towards the critical endpoint.

Shear viscosity coefficient and relaxation time of causal dissipative hydrodynamics in QCD

The shear viscosity coefficient and the corresponding relaxation time for causal dissipative hydrodynamics are calculated based on the microscopic formula proposed in [T. Koide and T. Kodama, Phys. Rev. \textbf{E 78}, 051107 (2008)]. Here, the exact formula is transformed into a more compact form and applied it to evaluate these transport coefficients in the chiral perturbation theory and perturbative QCD. It is shown that in the leading order calculation, the causal shear viscosity coefficient $η$ reduces to that of the ordinary Green-Kubo-Nakano formula, and the relaxation time $τ_π$ is related to $η$ and pressure $P$ by a simple relationship, $τ_π=η/P$.

Diquark Bose-Einstein condensation

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of composite diquarks in quark matter (the color superconductor phase) is discussed using the quasi-chemical equilibrium theory at a relatively low density region near the deconfinement phase transition, where dynamical quark-pair fluctuations are assumed to be described as bosonic degrees of freedom (diquarks). A general formulation is given for the diquark formation and particle-antiparticle pair-creation processes in the relativistic flamework, and some interesting properties are shown, which are characteristic for the relativistic many-body system. Behaviors of transition temperature and phase diagram of the quark-diquark matter are generally presented in model parameter space, and their asymptotic behaviors are also discussed. As an application to the color superconductivity, the transition temperatures and the quark and diquark density profiles are calculated in case with constituent/current quarks, where the diquark is in bound/resonant state. We obtained $T_C \sim 60-80$ MeV for constituent quarks and $T_C \sim 130$ MeV for current quarks at a moderate density ($ρ_b \sim 3 ρ_0$). The method is also developed to include interdiquark interactions into the quasi-chemical equilibrium theory within a mean-field approximation, and it is found that a possible repulsive diquark-diquark interaction lowers the transition temperature by nearly 50%.

How is chiral symmetry restored at finite density?

Taking into account pseudoscalar as well as scalar condensates, we reexamine the chiral restoration path on the chiral manifold. We shall see both condensates coherently produce a density wave at a certain density, which delays chiral restoration as density or temperature is increased.

Magnetism and superconductivity in quark matter

Magnetic properties of quark matter and its relation to the microscopic origin of the magnetic field observed in compact stars are studied. Spontaneous spin polarization appears in high-density region due to the Fock exchange term, which may provide a scenario for the behaviors of magnetars. On the other hand, quark matter becomes unstable to form spin density wave in the moderate density region, where restoration of chiral symmetry plays an important role. Coexistence of magnetism and color superconductivity is also discussed.

Chiral symmetry and density wave in quark matter

A density wave in quark matter is discussed at finite temperature, which occurs along with the chiral condensation, and is described by a dual standing wave in scalar and pseudo-scalar condensates on the chiral circle. The mechanism is quite similar to that for the spin density wave suggested by Overhauser, and entirely reflects many-body effects. It is found that the chiral condensed phase with the density wave develops at a high-density region just outside the usual chiral-transition line in phase diagram. A magnetic property of the density wave is also elucidated.

Charge Asymmetry of Same-Sign Dileptons in $B^0$-$\bar{B}^0$ Mixing

We report a measurement of the charge asymmetry for same-sign dileptons in $B^0$-$\bar{B}^0$ mixing, $A_{\rm sl}$. The data were collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Using a data sample of 78 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and 9 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at an energy 60 MeV below the resonance, we measure $A_{\rm sl} = (-1.1 \pm 7.9(\text{stat}) \pm 7.0(\text{sys}))\times 10^{-3}$.

Density waves in quasi-one-dimensional atomic gas mixture of boson and two-component fermion

We study the density-wave states of quasi-one-dimensional atomic gas mixture of one- and two-component boson and fermion using the mean-field approximation. Owing to the Peierls instability in the quasi-one-dimensional fermion system, the ground state of the system shows the fermion density wave and the periodic Bose-Einstein condensation induced by the boson-fermion interatomic interaction. For the two-component fermions, two density waves appear in these components, and the phase difference between them distinguishes two types of ground states, the in-phase and the out-phase density-waves. In this paper, a self-consistent method in the mean-field approximation is presented to treat the density-wave states in boson-fermion mixture with two-component fermions. From the analysis of the effective potential and the interaction energies calculated by this method, the density-waves are shown to appear in the ground state, which are in-phase or out-phase depending on the strength of the inter-fermion interaction. It is also shown that the periodic Bose-Einstein condensate coexists with the in-phase density-wave of fermions, but, in the case of the out-phase one, only the uniform condensate appears. The phase diagram of the system is given for the effective coupling constants.

Dual chiral density wave in quark matter

Possible manifestation of a dual chiral density wave in quark matter is discussed in relation to the chiral symmetry of QCD, which is described by a dual standing wave of the scalar and pseudo-scalar densities. It is demonstrated that quark matter is unstable for forming the dual chiral density wave at moderate densities in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model;accordingly the critical density for restoration of chiral symmetry becomes higher than ever considered. A unique magnetic property is also pointed out in the new phase.

Spin Polarization and Color Superconductivity in Quark Matter

A coexistent phase of spin polarization and color superconductivity in high-density QCD is investigated using a self-consistent mean-field method at zero temperature. The axial-vector current stemming from the Fock exchange term of the one-gluon-exchange interaction has a central role to cause spin polarization. The magnitude of spin polarization is determined by the coupled Schwinger-Dyson equation with a superconducting gap function. As a significant feature the Fermi surface is deformed by the axial-vector self-energy and then rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken. The gap function is also taken to be anisotropic in accordance with the deformation. As a result of numerical calculation, it is found that spin polarization barely conflicts with color superconductivity, but almost coexists with it.

Cosmic-Ray Detection System using Internet

A cosmic ray detection system, consisting of standardized detector stations connected through the Internet, is described. The system can be used for detecting air showers that arrive over a wide area with correlated time. The data at each site are exchanged in (quasi) real time, which makes the system suitable for displaying cosmic ray arrivals at museumns and schools.
