Recent progress on the chiral unitary approach to meson meson and meson baryon interactions

We report on recent progress on the chiral unitary approach, analogous to the effective range expansion in Quantum Mechanics, which is shown to have a much larger convergence radius than ordinary chiral perturbation theory, allowing one to reproduce data for meson meson interaction up to 1.2 GeV. Applications to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative approach are presented. Results for the extension of these ideas to the meson baryon sector are discussed, together with applications to kaons in a nuclear medium and $K^-$ atoms.

Photoproduction of the Lambda(1405) on the proton and nuclei

We study the gamma p ---> K^+ Lambda(1405) reaction at energies close to threshold using a chiral unitary model where the resonance is generated dynamically from K^-p interaction with other channels constructed from the octets of baryons and mesons. Predictions are made for cross sections into several channels and it is shown that the detection of the K^+ is sufficient to determine the shape and strength of the Lambda(1405) resonance. The determination of the resonance properties in nuclei requires instead the detection of the resonance decay channels. Pauli blocking effects on the resonance, which have been shown to be very important for the resonance at rest in the nucleus, are irrelevant here where the resonance is produced with a large momentum. The nuclear modifications here would thus offer information on the resonance and K^- nucleus dynamics complementary to the one offered so far by K^- atoms.

A coupled channel unitary chiral approach to the meson-meson interaction and pion-pion scattering in a nuclear medium

A new tool which combines chiral perturbation theory and unitarity in coupled channels is applied with success to the study of the meson-meson interaction, extending the theoretical predictions up to sqrt{s} = 1.2 GeV, hence improving considerably the convergence radius of conventional chiral perturbation theory. The method is applied to obtain the meson-meson phase shifts and inelasticities as well as the isoscalar pion-pion scattering amplitude inside a nuclear medium.

KbarN interaction and Kaons in the nuclear medium

The s-wave meson-nucleon interaction in the S=-1 sector is studied by means of a coupled-channel Lippmann Schwinger equation, using the lowest order chiral Lagrangian and a cut off to regularize the loop integrals. The position and width of the Lambda(1405) resonance and the K^- p scattering cross sections at low energies are well reproduced. The inclusion of the eta Lambda, eta Sigma^0 channels in the coupled system is found very important and allows a solution in terms of only the lowest order Lagrangian. The model is applied to calculate the in-medium K^- self-energy to which we add a small p-wave piece resulting from the coupling to hyperon particle-nucleon hole excitations. The K^- feels an attraction of about -100 MeV at normal nuclear density. The Lambda(1405) resonance shifts to energies above the $K^-p$ threshold and ends up dissolving as density increases. It remains to be seen how these effects persist when the dressing of the Kbar and the pi mesons is incorporated self-consistently in the calculation.

Two Pion Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Collisions at Intermediate Energies

We have developed a model for the N N --> N N pi pi reaction and evaluated cross sections for the different charged channels. The low energy part of those channels where the pions can be in an isospin zero state is dominated by N* excitation, driven by an isoscalar source followed by the decay N* --> N (pi pi, T=0, s-wave). At higher energies, and in channels where the pions are not in T=0, Delta excitation mechanisms become relevant.

Non-perturbative chiral approach to Kp -->gamma Y reactions

A recently developed nonperturbative chiral approach to describe the S=-1 meson-baryon reactions has been extended to investigate the near threshold $K^- p \to γΛ, γΣ^0$ reactions. With the parameters governed by chiral SU(3) symmetry, we show that the predicted branching ratios $Γ_{K^- p \to γΛ}/Γ_{K^- p \to all}$ and $Γ_{K^-p\to γΣ^0}/Γ_{K^- p \to all}$ are close to the experimental values. The coupling with the $η$ channels, which was shown to be important in the $S=-1$ meson-baryon reactions, is also found to be significant here. Our results are consistent with the interpretation of the $Λ(1405)$ as a quasi-bound meson-baryon state as found in other similar chiral approaches.

Chiral nonperturvative approach to the isoscalar s-wave pion-pion interaction in a nuclear medium

The s-wave isoscalar amplitude for pion-pion scattering in a nuclear medium is evaluated using a nonperturbative unitary coupled channels method and the standard chiral Lagrangians. The method has proved successful to describe the pion-pion properties in the scalar isoscalar channel up to 1.2 GeV giving rise to poles in the t matrix for the f0(980) and the sigma. The extension of the method to the nuclear medium implies not only the renormalization of the pions in the medium, but also the introduction of interaction terms related to contact terms in the pion-nucleon to pion-pion-nucleon interaction. Off shell effects are also shown to be important leading to cancellations which reduce the coupled channel integral equations to a set of algebraic equations. As the density increases we find a reduction of strength below the $σ$ region and a certain accumulation of strength at energies around pion threshold. Our results, based on chiral Lagrangians, provide similar results to those obtained with phenomenological models which impose minimal chiral constraints.

Isocalar Roper excitation in the pp --> pp pi0 reaction close to threshold

A new mechanism for the pp --> pp pi0 reaction close to threshold is suggested coming from the isoscalar excitation of the Roper and its decay into N(pi pi)S-wave, with one of the pi0 emitted and the other one reabsorbed on the second nucleon. The mechanism can lead to important interference with other mechanisms and, together with experiment, serves to exclude large ranges of the 2pi N* decay parameters allowed by the N* partial decay widths.

Weak Decay of Lambda Hypernuclei

We review recent developments concerning the weak decay of Lambda hypernuclei. New studies covering the mesonic decay channel as well as recent models for the non-mesonic one are discussed and compared with experimental data. The puzzle of the neutron- to proton-induced decay ratio, Gamma_n/Gamma_p, is addressed in connection to the two-nucleon induced decay channel and proposals for more efficient experimental analyses of this ratio are made.

Double Pion Production Reactions

We report on reactions producing two pions induced by real and virtual photons or nucleons. The role of different resonances in these reactions is emphasized. Novel results on coherent two pion photoproduction in nuclei are also reported.

Meson-Meson and Meson-Baryon Interactions in a chiral Non-perturbative Approach

A qualitative account of the meson-meson and meson-baryon interactions using chiral Lagrangians and the inverse amplitude method in coupled channels is done. The method, imposing exact unitarity, proves to be very useful tool to extend the information contained in the chiral Lagrangians at energies beyond the realm of applicability of chiral perturbation theory.

Nuclear effects in the F3 structure function

By using a relativistic framework and accurate nuclear spectral functions we evaluate the ratio F_{3A}/AF_{3N} of deep inelastic neutrino scattering. Parametrizations of this ratio for different values of Q^2 are provided. These results should be useful for taking into account the nuclear effects in analyses of experimental data in neutrino reactions in nuclear targets, and test QCD predictions for the nucleon structure functions. In particular, the size of the nuclear corrections is of the same order of magnitude as the size of the QCD corrections to the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule.

Meson-Meson interaction in a non-perturbative chiral approach

A non-perturbative method which combines constraints from chiral symmetry breaking and coupled channel unitarity is used to describe the meson-meson interaction up to about 1.2 GeV. The approach uses the O(p^2) and O(p^4) chiral Lagrangians. The seven free parameters of the O(p^4) Lagrangian are fitted to the data. The results are in good agreement with a vast amount of experimental analyses. The amplitudes develop poles in the complex plane corresponding to the f0, a0, rho, K*, phi, sigma and kappa resonances; the latter two, very broad. The total and partial decay widths of the resonances are also well reproduced. Further extensions and applications of this chiral non-perturbative scheme are also discussed.

Non-perturbative Approach to effective chiral Lagrangians and Meson Interactions

We develop a coupled channel unitary approach describing the behavior at higher energies of systems whose low-energy dynamics is given by effective O(p^2) and O(p^4) chiral Lagrangians. Our free parameters are those of the O(p^4) Lagrangian. When applied to the meson-meson interaction, it yields a remarkable agreement with data up to sqrt{s}=1.2 GeV, dynamically generating the sigma, f_0, a_0,rho and K^* resonances. Further applications are also proposed.

Inclusive Muon Capture in Light Nuclei

We study total muon capture rates in light nuclei, taking into account renormalizations of the nuclear vector and axial vector strengths. We estimate the influence in the results of uncertainties of the spin-isospin interaction parameter and nuclear densities. A few of these reactions are theoretical benchmarks for physics involving searches for neutrino oscillations. New experiments in muon capture in several targets are suggested, in the light of some discrepancies with theory, crudeness of some experimental results and relevance to neutrino physics.

Inclusive Neutrino Scattering in C-12: Implications for nu_mu to nu_e Oscillations

We study inclusive nu_e and nu_mu cross sections in C-12 in a theory that takes into account significant nuclear renormalization of strengths. Our calculation is in excellent agreement with the measured inclusive muon capture rate and the flux-averaged nu_e cross section, but overestimates the flux-averaged nu_mu inclusive cross section. These reactions are of crucial relevance to the issue of possible nu_mu to nu_e oscillations. We also calculate the flux-averaged cross sections in C-13 and Al-27, which are found to be consistent with the available experimental result.

Theoretical study of the N N --> N N pi pi reaction

We have developed a model for the N N --> N N pi pi reaction and evaluated cross sections for the different charged channels. The low energy part of those channels where the pions can be in an isospin zero state is dominated by N* excitation, driven by an isoscalar source recently found experimentally, followed by the decay N* --> N (pi pi, T=0, s-wave). At higher energies, and in channels where the pions are not in T=0, Delta excitation mechanisms become relevant. A rough agreement with the experimental data is obtained in most channels. Repercussions of the present findings for the ABC effect and the p p --> p p pi0 reaction close to threshold are also suggested.

Mesonic and Binding Contributions to the Nuclear Drell-Yan Process

We have evaluated the Drell-Yan cross section in nuclei paying special attention to the meson cloud contribution from pion and rho-meson, for which an accurate calculation using the meson nuclear spectral functions is used. Similarly, the nucleonic contribution is evaluated in terms of a relativistic nucleon spectral function. Fair agreement with experiment is found for different nuclei and the results show a sizeable contribution from the renormalized meson cloud. In order to reproduce the experiment a novel element is introduced, consisting of a gradual energy loss of the incoming proton in its pass through the nucleus which produces a strong A dependence at x_1 large.
