Coherent pion production in neutrino nucleus collision in the 1 GeV region

We calculate cross sections for coherent pion production in nuclei induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos of the electron and muon type. The analogies and differences between this process and the related ones of coherent pion production induced by photons, or the (p,n) and $(^3 He, t)$ reactions are discussed. The process is one of the several ones occurring for intermediate energy neutrinos, to be considered when detecting atmospheric neutrinos. For this purpose the results shown here can be easily extrapolated to other energies and other nuclei.

Virtual versus Real Nuclear Compton Scattering in the Delta(1232) Region

In this paper we calculate the cross section for Virtual Compton Scattering off nuclei in the delta resonance region. We also calculate the background for the process from Coherent Bremsstrahlung in nuclei and explore the regions where the Virtual Compton Scattering cross section dominates. The study also shows that it is possible to extract the cross section for Real Compton Scattering from the Virtual Compton one in a wide range of scattering angles.

Neutron and proton spectra from the decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei

We have determined the spectra of neutrons and protons following the decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei through the one- and two-nucleon induced mechanisms. The momentum distributions of the primary nucleons are calculated and a Monte Carlo simulation is used to account for final state interactions. From the spectra we calculate the number of neutrons ($N_n$) and protons ($N_p$) per $Λ$ decay and show how the measurement of these quantities, particularly $N_p$, can lead to a determination of $Γ_n / Γ_p$, the ratio of neutron to proton induced $Λ$ decay. We also show that the consideration of the two-nucleon induced channel has a repercussion in the results, widening the band of allowed values of $Γ_n / Γ_p$ with respect to what is obtained neglecting this channel.

The N*(1520) ---> Delta pi Amplitudes Extracted from the gamma p ---> pi+ pi- p Reaction and Comparison to Quark Models

The gamma p ---> pi+ pi- p reaction, in combination with data from the pi N ---> pi pi N reaction, allows one to obtain the s- and d-wave amplitudes for the N*(1520) decay into Delta pi with absolute sign with respect to the N*(1520) ---> N gamma helicity amplitudes. In addition one obtains the novel information on the q dependence of the amplitudes. This dependence fits exactly with the predictions of the non-relativistic constituent quark models. The absolute values provided by these models agree only qualitatively, and a discussion is done on the reasons for it and possible ways to improve.

Isoscalar Roper Excitation in $p(α, α')$ Reactions in the $10 - 15$ $GeV$ Region

Recent experiments at Saturne at $4$ $GeV$ showed that the $(α,α')$ reaction on the proton shows two distinctive peaks, which were associated to $Δ$ projectile excitation and Roper target excitation. A subsequent theoretical analysis has shown that this picture is qualitatively correct but there are important interference effects between the two mechanisms. Futhermore, at this energy the ratio of strengths for the Roper and $Δ$ peak is about $1/4$. In the present paper we show that by going to the $10 - 15$ $GeV$ region the interference effects become negligible, the signal for the Roper excitation is increased by more than an order of magnitude and the ratio of cross sections at the peaks for Roper and $Δ$ excitation becomes of the order of unity, thus making this range of energies ideal for studies of isoscalar Roper excitation.

Roper Excitation in Alpha-Proton Scattering

We study the Roper excitation in the $(α,α')$ reaction. We consider all processes which may be relevant in the Roper excitation region, namely, Roper excitation in the target, Roper excitation in the projectile, and double $Δ$ excitation processes. The theoretical investigation shows that the Roper excitation in the proton target mediated by an isoscalar exchange is the dominant mechanism in the process. We determine an effective isoscalar interaction by means of which the experimental cross section is well reproduced. This should be useful to make predictions in related reactions and is a first step to construct eventually a microscopic $NN \rightarrow NN^*$ transition potential, for which the present reaction does not offer enough information.

Double Pion Photoproduction on the Nucleon: Study of the Isospin Channels

A model for the gamma p ----> pion+ pion- p reaction developed earlier is extended to account for all isospin channels. The model includes N, Delta(1232), N^*(1440) and N^*(1520) as intermediate baryonic states and the rho-meson as an intermediate two pion resonance. Although many terms contribute to the cross section, some channels exhibit particular sensitivity to certain mechanisms of resonance excitation or decay and the reactions provide novel information on such mechanisms. In particular the gamma N ----> N^*(1520) ----> Delta(1232) pion process affects all the channels and is a key ingredient in the interpretation of the data. Comparison is made with all available data and the agreement is good in some channels. The remaining discrepancies in some other channels are discussed.

Recent Developments in one and two Pion Production in Elementary Reactions and Few Body Systems

In this talk we cover several issues concerning pion production. The first one is the p p ----> p p pi^0 reaction where an alternative explanation based on the off shell extrapolation of the pi N amplitude is offered. A recent model for the gamma N ----> pi pi N reaction is presented and a new kind of exchange current is constructed from it which allows one to address problems like double Delta photoproduction from the deuteron. Finally the (gamma, pi pi) reaction in nuclei is studied and shown to be highly sensitive to the renormalization of the pions in nuclei.

Short range correlations in the pion s-wave self-energy of pionic atoms

We evaluate the contribution of second order terms to the pion-nucleus s-wave optical potential of pionic atoms generated by short range nuclear correlation. The corrections are sizeable because they involve the isoscalar s-wave $πN$ amplitude for half off-shell situations where the amplitude is considerably larger than the on-shell one. In addition, the s-wave optical potential is reanalyzed by looking at all the different conventional contributions together lowest order, Pauli corrected rescattering term, second order absorptive effects, terms from the interaction of pions with the virtual pion cloud (chiral corrections) and correlation effects. Different off-shell extrapolations for the $πN$ amplitude are used and it is found that, although some individual terms are sensitive to the extrapolation, the sum of them is rather insensitive. The results are compared with empirical values from best fits to the data and are found to be compatible, within theoretical and empirical uncertainties. The results do not rule out further contributions but they put stringent constraints on their strength.

Off shell pi N amplitude and the p p->p p pi0 reaction

We have used a conventional model for the $pp \rightarrow pp π^{0}$ reaction consisting of the Born term plus the $s$-wave rescattering term. As a novelty we have introduced the off shell dependence of the $πN$ $s$-wave isoscalar amplitude. This amplitude is appreciably enhanced when one moves to the off shell situations met in the problem and, as a consequence, the $pp \rightarrow pp π^{0}$ cross section becomes considerably larger than with the use of the $πN$ on shell amplitudes. Two different models for the off shell extrapolation found in the literature have been used and the cross sections obtained are large enough to account for the experimental data, although uncertainties remain due to the incomplete knowledge of the off shell extrapolation.

CHIRAL SYMMETRY CONSTRAINTS ON THE $K^+$ INTERACTION WITH THE NUCLEAR PION CLOUD

The real part of the $K^{+}$ selfenergy for the interaction of the $K^{+}$ with the pion nuclear cloud is evaluated in lowest order of chiral perturbation theory and is found to be exactly zero in symmetric nuclear matter. This removes uncertainties in that quantity found in former phenomenological analyses and is supported by present experimental data on $K^{+}$ nucleus scattering.

Double Pion Photoproduction in Nuclei

The inclusive A(gamma,pi+ pi-)X reaction is studied theoretically. A sizeable enhancement of the cross section is found, in comparison with the scaling of the deuteron cross section (sigma_deuteron * A/2). This enhancement is due to the modifications in the nuclear medium of the gamma N ----> pi pi N amplitude and the pion dispersion relation. The enhancement is found to be bigger than the one already observed in the (pi,pi pi) reaction in nuclei.

Double Delta Production in the gamma d ---> p n pi+ pi- Reaction

We have studied the gamma d ---> Delta++ Delta- reaction which requires the collaboration of the two nucleons in deuteron. By means of a model previously developed for the gamma p ----> p pi+ pi- reaction, the two body exchange currents leading to double delta creation are derived. A fair agreement is obtained with a recent experiment, but more precise measurements and the extension to higher photon energies look advisable in order to see the limits of the present theoretical approach

A theoretical approach to the (pion^{-}, gamma gamma) reaction in nuclei

We have studied the pion^{-} capture in nuclei leading to two photons, using improved many body methods which have been tested with success in one photon pion^{-} radiative capture, muon^{-} capture and neutrino scattering. The qualitative features of the experimental data are reproduced but there are still some disagreement at small relative photon angles. The reaction is a potential source of information on details of the gamma-gamma-pion-pion vertex where chiral corrections can be relevant. New and more precise experiments are planned which make calculations like the present one relevant and opportune. ---------------------------------------------------------

The Axial Charge Renormalization in a Relativistic Description of Finite Nuclei

Starting from a realistic One-Boson-Exchange model of the nucleon nucleon interaction the relativistic mean field for nucleons is determined within the Dirac Brueckner Hartree Fock approach for finite nuclei. The matrix elements of the axial charge operator evaluated for the solutions of the Dirac equation with this selfenergy are investigated. These matrix elements are enhanced with respect to the equivalent non relativistic ones obtained from the solutions of the Schrödinger equation with the non relativistic equivalent potential. The present results confirm at a qualitative level the results for the axial charge renormalization obtained with perturbative approaches. However, the results obtained differ in size from those of the perturbative approach and are nucleus and state dependent.

Pion Cloud Contribution to K+ Nucleus Scattering

A careful reanalysis is done of the contribution to $K^{+}$ nucleus scattering from the interaction of the kaon with the virtual pion cloud. The usual approximations made in the evaluation of the related kaon selfenergy are shown to fail badly. We also find new interaction mechanisms which provide appreciable corrections to the kaon selfenergy. Some of these contribute to the imaginary part below pion creation threshold. The inclusion of these new mechanisms in the inelastic part of the optical potential produces a significant improvement in the differential and total $K^{+}$ nuclear cross sections. Uncertainties remain in the dispersive part of the optical potential.
