Modulation of dephasing due to a spin-boson environment

We study the reduced dynamics of a spin (qubit) coupled to a spin-boson environment in the case of pure dephasing. We derive formal exact expressions which can be cast in terms of exact integro-differential master equations. We present results for a SB environment with ohmic dissipation at finite temperatures. For the special value of the ohmic damping strength K=1/2 the reduced dynamics is found in analytic form. For K<<1 we discuss the possibility of modulating the effect of the SB environment on the qubit. In particular we study the effect of the crossover to a slow environment dynamics, which may be triggered by changing both the temperature and the system-environment coupling.

Dynamical suppression of telegraph and 1/f noise due to quantum bistable fluctuator

We study dynamical decoupling of a qubit from non gaussian quantum noise due to discrete sources, as bistable fluctuators and 1/f noise. We obtain analytic and numerical results for generic operating point. For very large pulse frequency, where dynamic decoupling compensates decoherence, we found universal behavior. At intermediate frequencies noise can be compensated or enhanced, depending on the nature of the fluctuators and on the operating point. Our technique can be applied to a larger class of non-gaussian environments.

Decoherence due to telegraph and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits

We study decoherence due to random telegraph and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits. We illustrate differences between gaussian and non gaussian effects at different working points and for different protocols. Features of the intrinsically non-gaussian and non-Markovian low-frequency noise may explain the rich physics observed in the spectroscopy and the dynamics of charge based devices.

Decoherence in Josephson qubits

A high degree of quantum coherence is a crucial requirement for the implementation of quantum logic devices. Solid state nanodevices seem particularly promising from the point of view of integrability and flexibility in the design. However decoherence is a serious limitation, due to the presence of many types low energy excitations in the ``internal'' environment and of ``external'' sources due to the control circuitery. Here we study both kind of dephasing in a special implementation, the charge Josephson qubit, however many of our results are applicable to a large class of solid state qubits. This is the case of 1/f noise for which we introduce and study a model of an environment of bistable fluctuatiors. External sources of noise are analized in terms of a suitable harmonic oscillator environment and the explicit mapping on the spin boson model is presented. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the environment. For a fluctuator environment with 1/f spectrum memory effects turn out to be important. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more microscopic parameter of the environment. This allows to determine which degrees of freedom of the environment are effective sources of decoherence in each different physical situation considered.

Decoherence due to discrete noise in Josephson qubits

We study decoherence produced by a discrete environment on a charge Josephson qubit by introducing a model of an environment of bistable fluctuators. In particular we address the effect of $1/f$ noise where memory effects play an important role. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the environment. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more microscopic parameter of the environment. This allows to determine which degrees of freedom of the environment are effective sources of decoherence in each different physical situation considered.

Dynamics of the spin-boson model with a structured environment

We investigate the dynamics of the spin-boson model when the spectral density of the boson bath shows a resonance at a characteristic frequency $Ω$ but behaves Ohmically at small frequencies. The time evolution of an initial state is determined by making use of the mapping onto a system composed of a quantum mechanical two-state system (TSS) which is coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO) with frequency $Ω$. The HO itself is coupled to an Ohmic environment. The dynamics is calculated by employing the numerically exact quasiadiabatic path-integral propagator technique. We find significant new properties compared to the Ohmic spin-boson model. By reducing the TSS-HO system in the dressed states picture to a three-level system for the special case at resonance, we calculate the dephasing rates for the TSS analytically. Finally, we apply our model to experimentally realized superconducting flux qubits coupled to an underdamped dc-SQUID detector.

Josephson nanocircuit in the presence of linear quantum noise

We derive the effective hamiltonian for a charge-Josephson qubit in a circuit with no use of phenomenological arguments, showing how energy renormalizations induced by the environment appear with no need of phenomenological counterterms. This analysis may be important for multiqubit systems and geometric quantum computation.

Decoherence and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits

We propose and study a model of dephasing due to an environment of bistable fluctuators. We apply our analysis to decoherence of Josephson Qubits, induced by background charges present in the substrate, which are also responsible for the 1/f noise. The discrete nature of the environment leads to a number of new features which are mostly pronounced for slowly moving charges. Far away from degeneracy this model for the dephasing is solved exactly.

Electron transfer in the nonadiabatic regime: Crossover from quantum-mechanical to classical behaviour

We study nonadiabatic electron transfer within the biased spin-boson model. We calculate the incoherent transfer rate in analytic form at all temperatures for a power law form of the spectral density of the solvent coupling. In the Ohmic case, we present the exact low temperature corrections to the zero temperature rate for arbitrarily large bias energies between the two redox sites. Both for Ohmic and non-Ohmic coupling, we give the rate in the entire regime extending from zero temperature, where the rate depends significantly on the detailed spectral behaviour, via the crossover region, up to the classical regime. For low temperatures, the rate shows characteristic quantum features, in particular the shift of the rate maximum to a bias value below the reorganization energy, and the asymmetry of the rate around the maximum. We study in detail the gradual extinction of the quantum features as temperature is increased.

Coherence correlations in the dissipative two-state system

We study the dynamical equilibrium correlation function of the polaron-dressed tunneling operator in the dissipative two-state system. Unlike the position operator, this coherence operator acts in the full system-plus-reservoir space. We calculate the relevant modified influence functional and present the exact formal expression for the coherence correlations in the form of a series in the number of tunneling events. For an Ohmic spectral density with the particular damping strength $K=1/2$, the series is summed in analytic form for all times and for arbitrary values of temperature and bias. Using a diagrammatic approach, we find the long-time dynamics in the regime $K<1$. In general, the coherence correlations decay algebraically as $t^{-2K}$ at T=0. This implies that the linear static susceptibility diverges for $K\le 1/2$ as $T\to 0$, whereas it stays finite for $K>1/2$ in this limit. The qualitative differences with respect to the asymptotic behavior of the position correlations are explained.

Decay of correlations in the dissipative two-state system

We study the equilibrium correlation function of the polaron-dressed tunnelling operator in the dissipative two-state system and compare the asymptoptic dynamics with that of the position correlations. For an Ohmic spectral density with the damping strength $K=1/2$, the correlation functions are obtained in analytic form for all times at any $T$ and any bias. For $K<1$, the asymptotic dynamics is found by using a diagrammatic approach within a Coulomb gas representation. At T=0, the tunnelling or coherence correlations drop as $t^{-2K}$, whereas the position correlations show universal decay $\propto t^{-2}$. The former decay law is a signature of unscreened attractive charge-charge interactions, while the latter is due to unscreened dipole-dipole interactions.
