A New Low $Q^2$ Measurement of the Proton's $g_1$ Spin Structure Function from Longitudinal & Transverse Polarized Data

The proton's spin structure has proven to be far more complicated than was originally believed, and has been the subject of a number of experimental investigations. %Early measurements of the proton's spin structure function $g_1$ showed that the proton does not solely derive its spin from the spins of its quarks, starting the `proton spin crisis'. Of particular interest are the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$, which can be used to generate moments to directly compare experimental results to Chiral Perturbation Theory and other theories of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The proton's $g_1$ structure function has been the subject of two other recent low momentum transfer experiments, but there are currently no published low momentum transfer measurements which collected data on the proton structure functions using both a longitudinally-polarized and a transversely-polarized target at the same kinematics. In this paper, we present the longitudinally polarized results of the Jefferson Lab E08-027 experiment, along with linked moments which combine this new result with the previously published transversely-polarized data from the same experiment. These results provide a proton $g_1$ extraction measured with very high precision across the resonance region, and provide new information on the value of $g_1$ dependent sum rules and moments.

Short-range correlated pair formation and nuclear shell structure

Short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs - caused by brief, high-momentum interactions between two nucleons - are dominated by neutron-proton pairs with large relative and smaller center-of-mass momenta. However, the underlying dynamics that determines which nucleons form such pairs remains uncertain. Previous measurements showed that proton pairing probabilities increased strongly with nuclear asymmetry N/Z, but could not rule out an increase with nuclear mass A. We measured high-missing-momentum protons knocked out in electron scattering from selected nuclei with a range of shell configurations, A, and N/Z, including 9Be, 10B, 11B, 12C, 40Ca, 48Ca, 54Fe and 197Au. Unexpectedly, we found that while the pairing probability increased with A, the slope of the increase was much greater from Be to C and from 40Ca to Fe, than from Be to Au. This shows the importance of long-range nuclear shell structure on the probability of short-range nucleon pairing.

d(e,e'p) Studies of Exclusive Deuteron Electro-Disintegration

The d(e,e'p) cross section was measured at momentum transfers $Q^2 = $ 0.8, 2.1 and 3.5 $(GeV/c)^2$ covering a wide range of proton kinematics at each $Q^2$ setting that made it possible to study this reaction as a function of missing momentum as well as a function of the neutron laboratory recoil angle $θ_{nq}$. Missing momentum distributions were determined for fixed values of $θ_{nq}$ up to missing momenta of 0.65 $GeV/c$. For the two larger momentum transfer settings, the characteristics of the experimental momentum distributions confirm the theoretical prediction that final state interactions (FSI) contribute maximally around a $θ_{nq} \sim 70^\circ$, while for $θ_{nq} < 45^\circ$ FSI are significantly reduced. The data at reduced FSI settings were best reproduced by calculations using the CD-Bonn potential wave functions.

Common Iron Passive Magnetic Shielding for Scintillator Array Photomultiplier Tubes

In accelerator-based experiments, detector arrays constructed from organic plastic scintillators are widely used for measurements of particle timing, hit position, and energy loss. These detectors are often operated in proximity to magnetic spectrometers, where the associated photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are exposed to fringe magnetic fields. The standard approach to mitigate magnetic interference involves individually shielding each PMT. In this work, we present a combined passive shielding solution consisting of a common iron enclosure for a row of PMTs, supplemented with individual mu-metal cylinders. This configuration was deployed during a 2022 experiment at JINR. Performance evaluations show that the proposed shielding effectively preserves PMT gain and timing resolution, demonstrating its viability for future applications in similar experimental environments.

Modeling Short-Range Nucleon Pair and Triplet Abundances in Atomic Nuclei

Short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs provide a sensitive probe of the short-distance structure of atomic nuclei and the underlying nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. We present a simple numerical method to estimate the number of two- and three-nucleon SRC clusters using an independent-particle shell model with a harmonic-oscillator basis. The relative abundances of proton-neutron (pn), proton-proton (pp), and neutron-neutron (nn) SRC pairs are calculated for Al, Fe, and Pb nuclei, normalized to carbon, and compared with existing analytical predictions and available extractions from experimental data. We extend the analysis to the isotopes 40Ca, 48Ca, and 54Fe (collectively, the CaFe nuclei), which have been recently measured but whose SRC results are not yet published. These isotopes provide insight into the role of 1f7/2 shell occupancy in SRC pair formation. Finally, we present a reference baseline for three-nucleon SRC cluster abundances across the studied nuclei, assuming 3N clusters originate from independent two-nucleon interactions. The predicted baseline is about 2.5% 3N-SRC/2N-SRC ratio for all medium and heavy nuclei. Deviations from this baseline may indicate the presence of additional short-range nuclear dynamics.

Measuring short-range correlations and quasi-elastic cross sections in A(e,e') at x>1 and modest Q$^2$

We present results from the Jefferson Lab E08-014 experiment, investigating short-range correlations (SRC) through measurements of inclusive quasi-elastic scattering from $^2$H, $^3$He, $^4$He, $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{48}$Ca. The kinematics were selected to isolate scattering from SRCs, yielding a plateau in the A/$^2$H cross-section ratios due to the universal two-body structure of the 2N-SRCs in light and heavy nuclei. We observe approximate plateaus in the A/$^2$H ratios and provide the first extractions of the A/$^2$H ratio for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca. We also examine the A/$^3$He ratio, aiming to identify three-nucleon SRCs (3N-SRCs). Following the approach for isolating 2N-SRCs, searching for 3N-SRC dominance involved measuring the A/$^3$He cross section ratio at modest-to-large $Q^2$ values and looking for a plateau ratios for $x \gtorder 2.5$. This was not observed in the data, and in fact increasing $Q^2$ values moved the data \textit{further away} from the predicted plateau. We show here that, when analyzed in terms of the struck nucleon's light-cone momentum, the data exhibited the expected trend, progressively approaching the predicted 3N-SRC plateau. These observations suggest that future measurements at higher energies may facilitate a definitive isolation and identification of 3N-SRCs.

Threshold $J/ψ$ Photoproduction as a Probe of Nuclear Gluon Structure

The nuclear EMC effect is the observation that quark distributions in bound nucleons experience significant modification at large $x$ relative to free nucleons. Despite decades of measurements verifying the presence of this effect in quarks across a wide range of nuclei, behavior of large-$x$ gluons in nuclei remains almost completely unknown. As the nuclear physics community seeks out new observables to try to elucidate the mechanisms behind the EMC effect, it becomes striking that we remain ignorant regarding the impact of nuclear effects on gluonic behavior. Recent photonuclear data using the Hall D photon beam have enabled the first measurement of $J/ψ$ photoproduction from nuclei near and below the energy threshold, with the results highlighted in Physical Review Letters as an Editors' Suggestion. These data have placed the first, and currently only, constraints on the behavior of large-$x$ gluons within bound nucleons. However, compared to the quantity of data which currently informs our knowledge of the quark-sector EMC effect, these data are extremely limited, and remain unable to conclusively observe or exclude large modification of gluon distributions. A high-luminosity photonuclear experiment will enable a precision measurement of incoherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction at and below the threshold region. This data will provide the first stringent constraints on nuclear modification of gluon structure or other exotic effects which could impact the production of $J/ψ$ from nuclei. We request 85 PAC days at Hall D using the GlueX detector with a 12 GeV electron beam energy and a coherent photon peak energy of $8$ GeV, split into 80 days using a $^4$He target and 5 calibration days using a $^2$H target.

Nuclear density dependence of polarization transfer in quasi-elastic ${\rm A}(\vec{e},e' \vec{p})$ reactions

The ratio of the transverse and longitudinal component of polarization transfer to protons in the quasi-elastic $(\vec{e}, e^{\prime} \vec{p}\,)$ reaction, $P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z$, is sensitive to the proton's electromagnetic form factor ratio, $G_E/G_M$. To explore density-dependent in-medium modifications, a comparison of polarization transfer ratios involving protons from distinct nuclear shells, each with different local nuclear densities, has been proposed. In this study, we present such comparisons between four shells, $1s_{1/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$ in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $1d_{3/2}$, $2s_{1/2}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$. In an effort to account for other many-body effects that may differ between shells, we use a state-of-the-art relativistic distorted-wave impulse-approximation (RDWIA) calculation and present the double ratios, $(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm Data}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm RDWIA}$ as well as the super ratios, $\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm Data}/\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm RDWIA}$, for chosen shells A and B, as a function of effective local nuclear densities. We find that double ratios for individual shells show a dependence on the probed effective nuclear densities. Studying the ratios, we observed a systematic variation between pairs of higher- and lower-density shells.

Modification of Quark-Gluon Distributions in Nuclei by Correlated Nucleon Pairs

We extend the QCD Parton Model analysis using a factorized nuclear structure model incorporating individual nucleons and pairs of correlated nucleons. Our analysis of high-energy data from lepton Deep-Inelastic Scattering, Drell-Yan and W/Z production simultaneously extracts the universal effective distribution of quarks and gluons inside correlated nucleon pairs, and their nucleus-specific fractions. Such successful extraction of these universal distributions marks a significant advance in our understanding of nuclear structure properties connecting nucleon- and parton-level quantities.

First Measurement of Near- and Sub-Threshold $J/ψ$ Photoproduction off Nuclei

We report on the first measurement of $J/ψ$ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of $7$ to $10.8$ GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of $\sim8.2$ GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive $A(γ,e^+e^-p)$ reaction with a dilepton invariant mass $M(e^+e^-)\sim m_{J/ψ}=3.1$ GeV. The incoherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions assuming a dipole form factor allow extracting a gluonic radius for bound protons of $\sqrt{\langle r^2\rangle}=0.85\pm0.14$ fm. The data also suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.

Electromagnetic Form Factors for Nucleons in Short-Range Correlations and the EMC effect

The relationship between medium modifications of nucleon electromagnetic form factors and nucleon structure functions is examined using a model motivated by Light-Front Holographic QCD (LFHQCD). These modifications are closely connected with the influence of short-ranged correlations. The size of the modifications to nucleon form factors is shown to be about the same as the modifications to the structure functions. Thus, small limits on form factors modifications do not rule out an explanation of the EMC effect motivated by the influence of short range correlations, as claimed by a recent paper.

A=3 (e,e') $x_B \geq 1$ cross-section ratios and the isospin structure of short-range correlations

We study the relation between measured high-$x_B$, high-$Q^2$, Helium-3 to Tritium, $(e,e')$ inclusive-scattering cross-section ratios and the relative abundance of high-momentum neutron-proton ($np$) and proton-proton ($pp$) short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs in three-body ($A=3$) nuclei. Analysis of this data using a simple pair-counting cross-section model suggested a much smaller $np/pp$ ratio than previously measured in heavier nuclei, questioning our understanding of $A=3$ nuclei and, by extension, all other nuclei. Here we examine this finding using spectral-function-based cross-section calculations, with both an \textit{ab initio} $A=3$ spectral function and effective Generalized Contact Formalism (GCF) spectral functions using different nucleon-nucleon interaction models. The \textit{ab initio} calculation agrees with the data, showing good understanding of the structure of $A=3$ nuclei. An 8\% uncertainty on the simple pair-counting model, as implied by the difference between it and the \textit{ab initio} calculation, gives a factor of 5 uncertainty in the extracted $np/pp$ ratio. Thus we see no evidence for the claimed ``unexpected structure in the high-momentum wavefunction for hydrogen-3 and helium-3''.

Search for axion-like particles through nuclear Primakoff production using the GlueX detector

We report on the results of the first search for the production of axion-like particles (ALP) via Primakoff production on nuclear targets using the GlueX detector. This search uses an integrated luminosity of 100 pb$^{-1}\cdot$nucleon on a $^{12}$C target, and explores the mass region of 200 < $m_a$ < 450 MeV via the decay $X\rightarrowγγ$. This mass range is between the $π^0$ and $η$ masses, which enables the use of the measured $η$ production rate to obtain absolute bounds on the ALP production with reduced sensitivity to experimental luminosity and detection efficiency. We find no evidence for an ALP, consistent with previous searches in the quoted mass range, and present limits on the coupling on the scale of $O$(1 TeV). We further find that the ALP production limit we obtain is hindered by the peaking structure of the non-target-related dominant background in GlueX, which we treat by using data on $^4$He to estimate and subtract these backgrounds. We comment on how this search can be improved in a future higher-statistics dedicated measurement.

First Observation of Large Missing-Momentum (e,e'p) Cross-Section Scaling and the onset of Correlated-Pair Dominance in Nuclei

We report the first measurement of $x_B$-scaling in $(e,e'p)$ cross-section ratios off nuclei relative to deuterium at large missing-momentum of $350 \leq p_{miss} \leq 600$ MeV/c. The observed scaling extends over a kinematic range of $0.7 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$, which is significantly wider than $1.4 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$ previously observed for inclusive $(e,e')$ cross-section ratios. The $x_B$-integrated cross-section ratios become constant (i.e., scale) beginning at $p_{miss}\approx k_F$, the nuclear Fermi momentum. Comparing with theoretical calculations we find good agreement with Generalized Contact Formalism calculations for high missing-momentum ($> 375$ MeV/c), suggesting the observed scaling results from interacting with nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. For low missing-momenta, mean-field calculations show good agreement with the data for $p_{miss}\le k_F$, and suggest that contributions to the measured cross-section ratios from scattering off single, un-correlated, nucleons are non-negligible up to $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c. Therefore, SRCs become dominant in nuclei at $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c, well above the nuclear Fermi Surface of $k_F \approx 250$ MeV/c.

The Proton Spin Structure Function $g_2$ and Generalized Polarizabilities in the Strong QCD Regime

The strong interaction is not well understood at low energy, or for interactions with low momentum transfer $Q^2$, but one of the clearest insights we have comes from Chiral Perturbation Theory ($χ$PT). This effective treatment gives testable predictions for the nucleonic generalized polarizabilities -- fundamental quantities describing the nucleon's response to an external field. We have measured the proton's generalized spin polarizabilities in the region where $χ$PT is expected to be valid. Our results include the first ever data for the transverse-longitudinal spin polarizability $δ_{LT}$, and also extend the coverage of the polarizability $\bar{d_2}$ to very low $Q^2$ for the first time. These results were extracted from moments of the structure function $g_2$, a quantity which characterizes the internal spin structure of the proton. Our experiment ran at Jefferson Lab using a polarized electron beam and a polarized solid ammonia (NH$_3$) target. The $δ_{LT}$ polarizability has remained a challenging quantity for $χ$PT to reproduce, despite its reduced sensitivity to higher resonance contributions; recent competing calculations still disagree with each other and also diverge from the measured neutron data at very low $Q^2$. Our proton results provide discriminating power between existing calculations, and will help provide a better understanding of this strong QCD regime.

Probing for high momentum protons in $^4$He via the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction

Experimental cross sections for the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/$c$ at $x_B=1.24$ and $Q^2$=2(GeV/$c$)$^2$ are reported. The data are compared to Relativistic Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation(RDWIA) calculations for $^4He(e,e'p)^3H$ channel. Significantly more events in the triton mass region are measured for $p_{m}$$>$0.45 GeV/$c$ than are predicted by the theoretical model, suggesting that the effects of initial-state multi-nucleon correlations are stronger than expected by the RDWIA model.

Search for a bound di-neutron by comparing $^3$He(e,e'p)d and $^3$H(e,e'p)X measurements

We report on a search for a bound di-neutron by comparing electron-induced proton-knockout $(e,e'p)$ measurements from Helium-3 ($^3$He) and Tritium ($^3$H). The measurements were performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A with a 4.326 GeV electron beam, and kinematics of large momentum transfer $Q^2 \approx 1.9$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and $x_B>1$, to minimize contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. Analyzing the measured $^3$He missing mass ($M_{miss}$) and missing energy ($E_{miss}$) distributions, we can distinguish the two-body break-up reaction, in which the residual proton-neutron system remains bound as a deuteron. In the $^3$H mirror case, under the exact same kinematic conditions, we do not identify a signature for a bound di-neutron with similar binding energy to that of the deuteron. We calculate exclusion limits as a function of the di-neutron binding energy and find that, for binding equivalent to the deuteron, the two-body break-up cross section on $^3$H is less than 0.9% of that on $^3$He in the measured kinematics at the 95% confidence level.
