Quantum vortex tunneling in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ thin films

Cuprate films offer a unique opportunity to observe vortex tunneling effects, due to their unusually low superfluid density and short coherence length. Here, we measure the magnetoresistance (\textit{MR}) due to vortex motion of a long meander line of a superconducting film made of underdoped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$. At low temperatures (\textit{T}), the \textit{MR} shows a significant deviation from Arrhenius activation. The data is consistent with two dimensional Variable Range Hopping (VRH) of single vortices, i.e. $MR\propto exp[-(T_0/T)^{1/3}]$. The VRH temperature scale $T_0$ depends on the vortex tunneling rates between pinning sites. We discuss its magnitude with respect to estimated parameters of the meander thin film.

A study of the ferromagnetic transition of $SrRuO_3$ in nanometer thick bilayers with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$, $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, Au and Cr: Signature of injected carriers in the pseudogap regime

The hypothesis regarding the existence of uncorrelated pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ is tested experimentally using bilayers of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ and the itinerant ferromagnet $SrRuO_3$. In our study, we monitor the influence of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ on $T_p$, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $SrRuO_3$. Here, $T_p$ is the temperature of maximum dM/dT or dR/dT where M and R are the magnetization and resistance of $SrRuO_3$, respectively. We compare the results with similar measurements carried out on bilayers of $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, $Au$ and $Cr$ with $SrRuO_3$. We find that in bilayers made of underdoped 10 nm $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$/5 nm $SrRuO_3$, the $T_p$ values are shifted to lower temperatures by up to 6-8 K as compared to $T_p\approx 140$ K of the 5 nm thick reference $SrRuO_3$ film. In contrast, in the other type of bilayers, which are not in the pseudogap regime near $T_p$, only a smaller shift of up to $\pm$2 K is observed. These differences are discussed in terms of a proximity effect, where carriers from the $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ layer are injected into the $SrRuO_3$ layer and vice versa. We suggest that correlated electrons in the pseudogap regime of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ are responsible for the observed large $T_p$ shifts.

New excitations in bcc $^{4}$He - an inelastic neutron scattering study

We report neutron scattering measurements on bcc solid $^{4}$% He. We studied the phonon branches and the recently discovered ''optic-like'' branch along the main crystalline directions. In addition, we discovered another, dispersionless "optic-like'' branch at an energy around 1 meV ($\sim$~11K). The properties of the two "optic-like" branches seem different. Since one expects only 3 acoustic phonon branches in a monoatomic cubic crystal, these new branches must represent different type of excitations. One possible interpretation involves localized excitations unique to a quantum solid.

Path-integral Monte Carlo study of phonons in the bcc phase of Helium-3

Using Path Integral Monte Carlo and the Maximum Entropy method, we calculate the dynamic structure factor of solid He-3 in the bcc phase at a finite temperature of T = 1.6 K and a molar volume of 21.5 cm^3. From the single phonon dynamic structure factor, we obtain both the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches along the main crystalline directions, [001], [011] and [111]. Our results are compared with other theoretical predictions and available experimental data.

The influence of boundaries on high pressure melting experiments

At low pressure, free surfaces play a crucial role in the melting transition. Under pressure, the surface of the sample is acted upon by some pressure transmitting medium. To examine the effect of this medium on melting, we performed Monte Carlo simulations of a system of argon atoms in the form of a slab with two boundaries. We examined two cases, one with a soft and the other with a rigid medium at the boundaries. We found that in the presence of a rigid medium, melting resembles the mechanical lattice instability found in a surface-free solid. With a soft medium at the boundary, melting begins at the surface and at a lower temperature. The relevance of these results to experiment is discussed.

Observation of Macroscopic Structural Fluctuations in bcc Solid 4He

We report neutron diffraction studies of low density bcc and hcp solid 4He. In the bcc phase, we observed a continuous dynamical behaviour involving macroscopic structural changes of the solid. The dynamical behaviour takes place in a cell full of solid, and therefore represents a solidsolid transformation. The structural changes are consistent with a gradual rotation of macroscopic grains separated by low angle grain boundaries. We suggest that these changes are triggered by random momentary vibrations of the experimental system. An analysis of Laue diffraction patterns indicates that in some cases these structural changes, once initiated by a momentary impulse, seem to proceed at a constant rate over times approaching an hour. The energy associated with these macroscopic changes appears to be on the order of kT. Under similar conditions (temperature and pressure), these effects were absent in the hcp phase.

Experimental search for anisotropic flux flow resistivity in the a-b plane of optimally doped epitaxial thin films of YBCO

Transport measurements along the node and anti-node directions in the a-b plane of optimally doped and epitaxial thin films of YBCO are reported. Low bias magnetoresistance measurements near and below T_c show that the flux flow resistivity along the node and anti-node directions versus magnetic field are indistinguishable. This result suggests that within the experimental error of our measurements, no correspondence is found between the flux pinning properties in YBCO and the d-wave nature of the order parameter.

Path Integral Monte Carlo study of phonons in the bcc phase of $^4$He

Using Path Integral Monte Carlo and the Maximum Entropy method, we calculate the dynamic structure factor of solid $^4$He in the bcc phase at a finite temperature of T = 1.6 K and a molar volume of 21 cm$^3$. Both the single-phonon contribution to the dynamic structure factor and the total dynamic structure factor are evaluated. From the dynamic structure factor, we obtain the phonon dispersion relations along the main crystalline directions, [001], [011] and [111]. We calculate both the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches. For the latter, no previous simulations exist. We discuss the differences between dispersion relations resulting from the single-phonon part vs. the total dynamic structure factor. In addition, we evaluate the formation energy of a vacancy.

Magnetoresistance of Junctions made of Underdoped YBCO Separated by a Ga-doped YBCO Barrier

We report magnetoresistance measurements of ramp type superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. The junctions consist of underdoped $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (YBCO) electrodes separated by a barrier of $YBa_{2}Cu_{2.6}Ga_{0.4}O_y$. We observe a large positive magnetoresistance, linear in the field. We suggest that this unusual magnetoresistance originates in the field dependence of the proximity effect. Our results indicate that in underdoped YBCO/N/YBCO SNS structures, the proximity effect does not exhibit the anomalously long range found in optimally doped YBCO structures. From our data we obtain the diffusion coefficient and relaxation time of quasiparticles in underdoped YBCO.

Observation of a New Mechanism of Spontaneous Generation of Magnetic Flux in a Superconductor

We report the discovery of a new mechanism of spontaneous generation of a magnetic flux in a superconductor cooled through $T_c$. The sign of the spontaneous flux changes randomly from one cooldown to the next, and follows a Gaussian distribution. The width of the distribution increases with the size of the temperature gradient in the sample. Our observations appear inconsistent with the well known mechanisms of flux generation. The dependence on the temperature gradient suggests that the flux may be generated through an instability of the thermoelectric superconducting-normal quasiparticle counterflow.

Observation of McMillan-Rowell like oscillations in underdoped YBCO junctions oriented along the node of the d-wave order parameter

Dynamic resistance spectra of ramp junctions made of underdoped YBCO electrodes and Ga-doped YBCO barrier are reported. Series of equidistant peaks were observed in these spectra in junctions oriented along the node direction. Junctions with different barrier thickness d_N, showed that the distance between adjacent peaks scales inversely with d_N. The peaks were thus identified as due to McMillan-Rowell like oscillations in the barrier. Analysis of the series of peaks yields an upper limit of about 3.7 meV on the value of the energy gap along the node. We attribute this small gap to the complex s component of the order parameter of underdoped YBCO near the interface of the junctions.

Observation of a common symmetry for the pseudogap and the superconducting order parameter near the surface of underdoped YBCO

Measurements of the angular dependence of conductance spectra in the a-b plane of underdoped YBCO junctions are reported. At zero magnetic field the superconducting gap shows a |d+is|-like symmetry. Application of a magnetic field strongly suppresses this gap leaving only the pseudogap feature which also shows a |d+is|-like angular dependence. We thus observe the same symmetry for the superconducting gap and the pseudogap characterizing the YBCO electrodes near the interface with the barrier. An H_{c2} value of about 5T of the secondary (is) order parameter can also be deduced from our results.

Molecular dynamics study of melting of a bcc metal-vanadium II : thermodynamic melting

We present molecular dynamics simulations of the thermodynamic melting transition of a bcc metal, vanadium using the Finnis-Sinclair potential. We studied the structural, transport and energetic properties of slabs made of 27 atomic layers with a free surface. We investigated premelting phenomena at the low-index surfaces of vanadium; V(111), V(001), and V(011), finding that as the temperature increases, the V(111) surface disorders first, then the V(100) surface, while the V(110) surface remains stable up to the melting temperature. Also, as the temperature increases, the disorder spreads from the surface layer into the bulk, establishing a thin quasiliquid film in the surface region. We conclude that the hierarchy of premelting phenomena is inversely proportional to the surface atomic density, being most pronounced for the V(111) surface which has the lowest surface density.

Observation of Magnetic Flux Generated Spontaneously During a Rapid Quench of Superconducting Films

We report observations of spontaneous formation of magnetic flux lines during a rapid quench of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ films through T$_{c}$. This effect is predicted according to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism of creation of topological defects of the order parameter during a symmetry-breaking phase transition. Our previous experiment, at a quench rate of 20K/sec, gave null results. In the present experiment, the quench rate was increased to \TEXTsymbol{>} 10$^{8}$ K/sec. Within experimental resolution, the dependence of the measured flux on the cooling rate is consistent with the prediction.

Molecular dynamics study of melting of a bcc metal-vanadium I: mechanical melting

We present molecular dynamics simulations of the homogeneous (mechanical) melting transition of a bcc metal, vanadium. We study both the nominally perfect crystal as well as one that includes point defects. According to the Born criterion, a solid cannot be expanded above a critical volume, at which a 'rigidity catastrophe' occurs. This catastrophe is caused by the vanishing of the elastic shear modulus. We found that this critical volume is independent of the route by which it is reached whether by heating the crystal, or by adding interstitials at a constant temperature which expand the lattice. Overall, these results are similar to what was found previously for an fcc metal, copper. The simulations establish a phase diagram of the mechanical melting temperature as a function of the concentration of interstitials. Our results show that the Born model of melting applies to bcc metals in both the nominally perfect state and in the case where point defects are present.

Observation of a new excitation in bcc solid 4He by inelastic neutron scattering

We report neutron scattering measurements of the phonons in bcc solid 4He. In general, only 3 accoustic phonon branches should exist in a monoatomic cubic crystal. In addition to these phonon branches, we found a new ''optic-like'' mode along the [110] direction. One possible interpretation of this new mode is in terms of localized excitations unique to a quantum solid.

Correlated atomic motion and spin-ordering in bcc $^{3}$He

We propose a new way to treat the ordering of nuclear magnetism of solid $^{3}$He. We argue that the magnetic interaction arises indirectly as a consequence of correlated zero-point motion of the ions. This motion lowers the energy of the ground state, and results in a coherent state of oscillating electric dipoles. Distortion of the electronic wavefunctions leads to hyperfine magnetic interactions with the nuclear spin. Our model describes both the modification of the phonon spectra, localized modes ("vacancies") and the nuclear magnetic ordering of bcc $^{3}$He using a single parameter, the dipolar interaction energy $E_{0}$. The model yields correctly both the u2d2 symmetry of the ordered phase and the volume dependence of the magnetic interaction. We calculate the magnetic excitations in the u2d2 phase, which compare well with the measured specific-heat, free energy and entropy. We further give a description of the nature of the High-Field phase and the phase-transition lines as a function of magnetic field and volume.
