A search for the first galaxies across $>0.6$ deg$^2$ of JWST imaging: new evidence for a rapid decline in star-formation activity at $z>12$

We present a new determination of the evolving galaxy UV luminosity function (LF) over the extreme redshift range $12.5 $0.6 deg$^2$ of JWST NIRCam imaging containing $>150$ independent sight-lines. We find evidence for an accelerated decline in the UV LF, and hence inferred star-formation rate density ($ρ_{\rm SFR}$), over the $\simeq100\rm{Myr}$ cosmic time interval between $z=11$ and $z=13.5$. Moreover, based on a notable lack of galaxy candidates at $z>14.5$, we find evidence for an even more rapid descent in star-formation activity towards earlier times, with our new measurement of $ρ_{\rm SFR}$ at $z\simeq15.5$ lying significantly below an extrapolation of the log-linear $ρ_{\rm SFR}(\rm z)$ relation inferred from early JWST LF studies. Instead, we find that the evolution in $ρ_{\rm SFR}(\rm z)$ at these very early times is better described by a piece-wise log-linear relation, in which the decline in $ρ_{\rm SFR} (\rm z)$ at $z>12$ is $\simeq4$ times steeper than at redshifts $z < 12$. Our observational results are consistent with a number of theoretical models of galaxy evolution which have incorporated a range of treatments in an attempt to explain the prevalence of UV-bright galaxies at least out to $z \simeq 12$ (e.g., increased star-formation efficiency, stochastic star-formation histories, an evolving stellar initial mass function and/or a shift towards attenuation-free stellar populations). However, our results are also entirely consistent with a relatively simple galaxy evolution model with no such adjustments, in which the rapid evolution of the dark-matter halo mass function at early times is for a while partially masked by progressively younger stellar ages, with the inferred epoch of first galaxy formation lying at $z\simeq15$.

Gas around galaxy haloes - II: hydrogen absorption signatures from the environments of galaxies at redshifts 2 < z < 3

We compare predictions of large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulations for neutral hydrogen absorption signatures in the vicinity of 1e11 - 1e12.5 MSun haloes with observational measurements. Two different hydrodynamical techniques and a variety of prescriptions for gas removal in high density regions are examined. Star formation and wind feedback play only secondary roles in the HI absorption signatures outside the virial radius, but play important roles within. Accordingly, we identify three distinct gaseous regions around a halo: the virialized region, the mesogalactic medium outside the virial radius arising from the extended haloes of galaxies out to about two turnaround radii, and the intergalactic medium beyond. Predictions for the amount of absorption from the mesogalactic and intergalactic media are robust across different methodologies, and the predictions agree with the amount of absorption observed around star-forming galaxies and QSO host galaxies. Recovering the measured amount of absorption within the virialized region, however, requires either a higher dynamic range in the simulations, additional physics, or both.

The impact of helium reionization on the structure of the intergalactic medium

We examine the impact of helium reionization on the structure of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We model the reionization using a radiative transfer (RT) code coupled to the combined gravity hydrodynamics code Enzo. Neutral hydrogen and helium are initially ionized by a starburst spectrum, which is allowed to gradually evolve into a power law spectrum over the redshift interval 3 < z < 4. The temperature-density relation of the gas is found to fan out and flatten following HeII reionization, with an inversion for overdensities above 5. Peculiar velocities of up to 10 km/s are induced by the increased pressure, with the gas density field distorted over large coherent regions by 10-20%, and the dark matter by levels of 1%. The photoionization-induced flows may thus distort the matter power spectrum at comoving wavenumbers k > 0.5 h/Mpc by a few percent by z = 2. Absorption spectra for HI and HeII are drawn from the simulations, and absorption lines are fit to the spectra. A median Doppler parameter of 35 km/s is obtained for the HI absorption systems at z = 3. Dividing into subsamples optically thick and optically thin at line centre reveals that the optically thick systems undergo only mild evolution while the optically thin systems evolve rapidly following HeII reionization. A comparison between HeII and HI absorption features shows a broad distribution in the HeII and HI column density ratio, peaking near the measured value and only slightly narrower than measured. A comparison with approximate simulation methods shows moderately good agreement in the absorption line properties, but not to the precision to which they may be measured.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics in cosmology: a comparative study of implementations

We analyse the performance of twelve different implementations of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) using seven tests designed to isolate key hydrodynamic elements of cosmological simulations which are known to cause the SPH algorithm problems. In order, we consider a shock tube, spherical adiabatic collapse, cooling flow model, drag, a cosmological simulation, rotating cloud-collapse and disc stability. In the implementations special attention is given to the way in which force symmetry is enforced in the equations of motion. We study in detail how the hydrodynamics are affected by different implementations of the artificial viscosity including those with a shear-correction modification. We present an improved first-order smoothing-length update algorithm that is designed to remove instabilities that are present in the Hernquist and Katz (1989) algorithm. For all tests we find that the artificial viscosity is the most important factor distinguishing the results from the various implementations. The second most important factor is the way force symmetry is achieved in the equation of motion. Most results favour a kernel symmetrization approach. The exact method by which SPH pressure forces are included has comparatively little effect on the results. Combining the equation of motion presented in Thomas and Couchman (1992) with a modification of the Monaghan and Gingold (1983) artificial viscosity leads to an SPH scheme that is both fast and reliable.
