Field evolution of the magnetic structure and spin Hamiltonian in Cs$_2$RuO$_4$

We report neutron diffraction under applied magnetic fields and complementary zero-field neutron spectroscopy measurements on Cs$_2$RuO$_4$. Previous work [S. D. Nabi et al., Phys. Rev. B 112, 134436 (2025)] identified a spin-flop-like transition accompanied by a quantum critical point within the ordered phase, attributed to strong frustration between alternating single-ion anisotropy planes. Here, we quantitatively confirm the predicted field evolution of the magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. Furthermore, analysis of the excitation spectrum within an SU(3) spin-wave framework resolves previously undetermined parameters of the minimal spin Hamiltonian and lifts the associated degeneracies.

Vortex order in magnetic frustrated GeNi$_2$O$_4$ and GeCo$_2$O$_4$ spinels

In the search for new spin textures based on singular magnetic objects like Bloch-points or vortices, spinel compounds emerge as an interesting playground due to the interplay between magnetic anisotropy and complex interactions that extend well beyond first neighbors on a pyrochlore lattice. Based on an exploration of the exchange interaction phase diagrams of members of the Ge$B_2$O$_4$ family with $B$=Co and Ni, we show, using simultaneous modeling of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, that a 2-$k$ magnetic structure may be stabilized in these compounds. This leads to a short period spin vortex crystal, a variant induced by the magnetic anisotropy of the 3-$k$ Bloch-point structure predicted for isotropic spins. Our study rationalizes the formation of these multi-$k$ spin textures in frustrated antiferromagnets, as well as their anisotropy-dependent evolution.

Spin structures and phase diagrams of the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaMn(PO$_4$)$_2$ under magnetic field

We combine single-crystal neutron diffraction studies and Monte Carlo simulations to determine the spin structures and finite-temperature phase diagram of the spin-5/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaMn(PO$_4$)$_2$ in magnetic field. With the application of a magnetic field in two different directions, namely along the $c$-axis and in the $ab$-plane of the trigonal symmetry, we track the evolution of the spin structure through changes of the magnetic propagation vector. We account for these results with a minimal Heisenberg Hamiltonian that includes easy-axis anisotropy and weak, frustrated interlayer couplings in addition to intralayer exchange. Guided by representation analysis, we refine symmetry-allowed modes to the measured intensities and obtain the spin structures for all field-induced phases, which we compare quantitatively with simulated configurations. Taken together, our measurements and simulations show that frustrated interlayer exchange -- rather than purely 2D physics -- organizes the unexpectedly rich field-induced phases of Na$_2$BaMn(PO$_4$)$_2$.

From hierarchical triangular spin liquid to multi-$q$ spin texture in spinel GeFe$_2$O$_4$

Combining macroscopic measurements, neutron scattering and modeling, we identify in the GeFe$_2$O$_4$ spinel a correlated paramagnetic state resulting from the predominance of third-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. These interactions materialize 4 isolated families of triangular planes with 120$^{\circ}$ spins emerging from the underlying pyrochlore lattice. At lower temperatures, a phase transition occurs from this hierarchical spin liquid to a non-coplanar spin texture that is characterized by 6 propagating vectors. This unusual multi-$q$ order is triggered by the presence of weaker interactions up to the sixth neighbors. The system is remarkably successful in coupling the different triangular planes while maintaining their two-dimensional 120$^{\circ}$ order. Our study highlights the hierarchy of interactions involved in GeFe$_2$O$_4$, which is singular among spinel compounds since first-neighbor interactions are only a small fraction of the dominant third neighbor ones.

Magnetic phase diagram of magnetocaloric TmFeO$_3$

Neutron diffraction experiments of TmFeO$_3$ single crystals were performed in the external magnetic fields. The field along $c$-axis increases temperature of spin-reorientation transition $T_{SR}$ from phase ${\Gamma}4$ to ${\Gamma}2$. Application of the field along $b$-axis led to the decrease of $T_{SR}$ and to the formation of new phases. Based on the temperature and field dependence of the Bragg reflection intensity, the configuration of magnetically induced phases was proposed.

Braided Ising spin-tube physics in a purported kagome magnet

The magnetic insulator Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ has been previously proposed to realize the highly frustrated breathing kagome lattice model. We report a combination of single-crystal neutron scattering studies and numerical simulations that debunk this interpretation. We show that it is the inter-plane couplings that determine the physics. To explain the exotic magnetism, we derive a simple one-dimensional Ising model composed of twisted triangular spin-tubes, i.e., triple braids of Ising spin chains with almost-orthogonal anisotropy frames and competing ferro-antiferromagnetic interactions. This model can account for the ground state, excitations, the numerous field-induced fractional magnetization plateau phases and incommensurate magnetic correlations at elevated temperatures. Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ constitutes a rare example where rich magnetic phenomena can be understood and simulated quantitatively in terms of a simple classical Hamiltonian.

Resolving the local distortions of Ising-like moments in magnetoelectric Ho-doped langasite

The magnetic properties of Ho-doped langasites (La:Ho)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ are dominated by the Ising-like magnetic moments of the Ho$^{3+}$ ions. In their saturated regime, the induced magnetic state breaks both time and space inversion symmetries, leading to a novel linear magnetoelectric effect. However, due to distortions induced by a shared Ga/Si occupancy of the 2d sites, resolving the microscopic nature of the magnetic configuration remains a difficult task. Here we combine polarized neutron diffraction and angular dependent magnetization experiments to determine the local distortions of the Ho$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in doped langasites (La$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ with $x \approx 0.015$ and $x \approx 0.045$. We propose a model for a field-induced magnetic configuration with arbitrary orientations of the local Ising axis of Ho$^{3+}$ in distorted positions. The operations of broken local $C_2$ symmetry and rotations around the trigonal $C_3$ axis connect different sites, restoring the global P321 symmetry of the crystal and simplifying the description of the magnetic properties. The superposition of two distorted Ho$^{3+}$ positions connected by $C_2$ symmetry determines the local magnetic susceptibility tensor, which no longer appears Ising-like at low fields.

Uncommon magnetic ordering in the quantum magnet Yb$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$

The antiferromagnetic structure of Yb$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ is identified by neutron diffraction experiments below the previously-known transition at $T_{\lambda}=54$ mK. The magnetic propagation vector is found to be ${\bf k}=(1/2, 1/2, 0)$, an unusual wave-vector in the garnet structure. The associated complex magnetic structure highlights the role of exchange interactions in a nearly isotropic system dominated by dipolar interactions and finds echos with exotic structures theoretically proposed. Reduced values of the ordered moments may indicate significant quantum fluctuations in this effective spin-1/2 geometrically frustrated magnet.

Magnetic field-induced phases and spin Hamiltonian in Cs2CoBr4

Magnetic structures and spin excitations are studied across the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated S = 3/2 quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CoBr4 in magnetic fields applied along the magnetic easy axis, using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and THz absorption spectroscopy. The data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU (4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high field polarized state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

Incommensurate antiferromagnetism in UTe2 under pressure

The discovery of multiple superconducting phases in UTe2 boosted research on correlated-electron physics. This heavy-fermion paramagnet was rapidly identified as a reference compound to study the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity with multiple degrees of freedom. The proximity to a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition was initially proposed as a driving force to triplet-pairing superconductivity. However, we find here that long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is established under pressure. The propagation vector km = (0.07,0.33,1) of the antiferromagnetic phase is close to a wavevector where antiferromagnetic fluctuations have previously been observed at ambient pressure. These elements support that UTe2 is a nearly-antiferromagnet at ambient pressure. Our work appeals for theories modelling the evolution of the magnetic interactions and electronic properties, driving a correlated paramagnetic regime at ambient pressure to a long-range antiferromagnetic order under pressure. A deeper understanding of itinerant-f-electrons magnetism in UTe2 will be a key for describing its unconventional superconducting phases.

Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in CePtAl$_3$

We report a neutron diffraction study of single-crystal CePtAl$_3$ complemented by measurements of the specific heat under applied magnetic field. Below $T_\mathrm{N}$=3 K CePtAl$_3$ develops incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with a single modulation vector $\vec{k}$=$(0.676 \, 0 \, 0)$. Residual magnetic scattering intensity above $T_\mathrm{N}$ and a broadening of the specific heat anomaly at $T_\mathrm{N}$ may be consistently described in terms of a Gaussian distribution of transition temperatures with a standard deviation $σ\approx0.5\,{\rm K}$. The distribution of $T_\mathrm{N}$ may be attributed to the observation of occupational and positional disorder between the Pt and Al sites. Measurements under magnetic field reveal unusual changes of the domain populations when the field is applied along the $[0\,1\,0]$ direction consistent with a transition from cycloidal to amplitude modulated magnetic order around 2.5 T.

From spin liquid to magnetic ordering in the anisotropic kagome Y-Kapellasite Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8: a single crystal study

Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

Possible stripe phases in the multiple magnetization plateaus in TbB$_4$ derived from single-crystal neutron diffraction under pulsed high magnetic fields

We present a single-crystal neutron diffraction study on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice system TbB$_4$ at zero magnetic field and under pulsed high magnetic fields up to 35 T applied along the crystallographic $c$ axis. While our results confirm the magnetic structures at zero-field as well as those at the half- and full-magnetization plateaus, they offer new insight into the $\frac{2}{9}$- and $\frac{1}{3}$-magnetization plateaus observed in this system. A stripe model of polarized 4-spin-plaquettes whose stripe density proportionally increases with the macroscopic magnetization is in full agreement with the neutron diffraction data. Equally well suited alternative models exist which explain the observed Bragg peaks which are inherently limited in a pulsed high magnetic field experiment. We discuss the different intensity distribution in $Q$ space which can be used to distinguish these models in future experiments.

The magnetic structure and field dependence of the cycloid phase mediating the spin reorientation transition in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the magnetic structure of the cycloidal phase in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, which mediates the spin reorientation transition, and establishes its magnetic phase diagram. In zero applied field, single-crystal neutron diffraction data confirms the scenario deduced from an earlier resonant x-ray scattering study: between $46.7$~K $< T < 49.0$~K the magnetic moments form a cycloid in the $a-b$ plane with a propagation wavevector of $(δ,0,1)$ with $δ\simeq 0.025$ and an ordered moment of about 1 $μ_{\rm{B}}$, with the eccentricity of the cycloid evolving with temperature. In an applied magnetic field applied parallel to the $b$-axis, the intensity of the $(δ,0,1)$ satellite peaks decreases continuously up to about $μ_0 H \simeq 5$ T, above which field the system becomes field polarised. Both the eccentricity of the cycloid and the wavevector increase with field, the latter suggesting an enhancement of the anti$-$symmetric Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction via magnetostriction effects. Transitions between the various low-temperature magnetic phases have been carefully mapped out using magnetometry and resistivity. The resulting phase diagram reveals that the cycloid phase exists in a temperature window that expands rapidly with increasing field, before transitioning to a polarised paramagnetic state at 5 T. High-field magnetoresistance measurements show that below $T\simeq 70$ K the resistivity increases continuously with decreasing temperature, indicating the inherent insulating nature at low temperatures of our high-quality, untwinned, single-crystals. We discuss our results with reference to previous reports of the magnetic phase diagram of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ that utilised samples which were more metallic and/or poly-domain.

Spin Density Wave versus Fractional Magnetization Plateau in a Triangular Antiferromagnet

We report an excellent realization of the highly non-classical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Anisotropy driven response of skyrmion lattice in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ to applied magnetic fields

We theoretically and experimentally study the stability of the unconventional fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice (AF-SkL) in Mn$_2$S$_4$ spinel under magnetic fields applied along the $[$1-10$]$ crystal direction. By performing numerical Monte Carlo simulations for the minimal effective spin model that we proposed in Ref. [S. Gao, et al., Nature 586, 37-41 (2020)], we show that the skyrmion lattice is aligned within the equivalent and symmetric $[$1-11$]$ or $[$1-11$]$ planes, which are equally inclined to the applied magnetic field. We attribute this behavior to the magnetic anisotropy of the host material. Neutron single crystal diffraction presents a very good agreement with the predictions of the effective model. It reveals that the topological spin texture gets destabilized at low temperatures and moderate magnetic fields and is replaced by a conical phase for B// $[$1-10$]$. The present study elucidates the central role of the magnetic anisotropy in the stabilization of antiferromagnetic skyrmionic states.

Spin correlations in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 near saturation

Single crystal elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 in high magnetic fields. The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attributed to a staggered pattern of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

Spin dynamics and unconventional Coulomb phase in Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$

We investigate the temperature dependence of the spin dynamics in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ by neutron scattering experiments. At low temperature, this material undergoes a transition towards an "all in - all out" antiferromagnetic phase and the spin dynamics encompass a dispersion-less mode, characterized by a dynamical spin ice structure factor. Unexpectedly, this mode is found to survive above $T_{\rm N} \approx 300$ mK. Concomitantly, elastic correlations of the spin ice type develop. These are the signatures of a peculiar correlated paramagnetic phase which can be considered as a new example of Coulomb phase. Our observations near $T_{\rm N}$ do not reproduce the signatures expected for a Higgs transition, but show reminiscent features of the "all in - all out" order superimposed on a Coulomb phase.
