A versatile and reliably re-usable ultrahigh vacuum viewport

We present a viewport for use in Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) based upon the preflattened solder seal design presented in earlier work, Cox et al. Rev. Sci. Inst. 74, 3185 (2003). The design features significant modifications to improve long term performance. The windows have been leak tested to less than 10^-10 atm cm^3/s . From atom number measurements in an optical dipole trap loaded from a vapor cell magneto-optical trap (MOT) inside a vacuum chamber accommodating these viewports, we measure a trap lifetime of 9.5s suggesting a pressure of around 10^-10 Torr limited by background Rubidium vapor pressure. We also present a simplified design where the UHV seal is made directly to a vacuum pipe

Dark dynamic acousto-optic ring lattices for ultracold atoms

We demonstrate the optical generation of dynamic dark optical ring lattices, which do not require Laguerre-Gauss beams, large optical coherence lengths or interferometric stability. Simple control signals lead to spatial modulation and reproducible rotation, offering manifold possibilities for complex dynamic ring lattices. In conjunction with a magnetic trap, these scanned 2D intensity distributions from a single laser beam will enable precision trapping and manipulation of ultracold species using blue-detuned light. The technique is ideal for azimuthal ratchet, Mott insulator and persistent current experiments with quantum degenerate gases.

A Smooth, Inductively Coupled Ring Trap for Atoms

We propose and numerically investigate a scalable ring trap for cold atoms that surmounts problems of roughness of the potential and end--effects of trap wires. A stable trapping potential is formed about an electrically isolated, conducting loop in an ac magnetic field by time averaging the superposition of the external and induced magnetic fields. We investigate the use of additional fields to eliminate Majorana spin flip losses and to create novel trapping geometries. The possibility of micro--fabrication of these ring traps offers the prospect of developing Sagnac atom interferometry in atom--chip devices.

A large magnetic storage ring for Bose-Einstein condensates

Cold atomic clouds and Bose-Einstein condensates have been stored in a 10cm diameter vertically-oriented magnetic ring. An azimuthal magnetic field enables low-loss propagation of atomic clouds over a total distance of 2m, with a heating rate of less than 50nK/s. The vertical geometry was used to split an atomic cloud into two counter-rotating clouds which were recombined after one revolution. The system will be ideal for studying condensate collisions and ultimately Sagnac interferometry.

Bose-Einstein condensates in `giant' toroidal magnetic traps

The experimental realisation of gaseous Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in 1995 sparked considerable interest in this intriguing quantum fluid. Here we report on progress towards the development of an 87Rb BEC experiment in a large (~10cm diameter) toroidal storage ring. A BEC will be formed at a localised region within the toroidal magnetic trap, from whence it can be launched around the torus. The benefits of the system are many-fold, as it should readily enable detailed investigations of persistent currents, Josephson effects, phase fluctuations and high-precision Sagnac or gravitational interferometry.
