Are PAHs precursors of small hydrocarbons in Photo--Dissociation Regions? The Horsehead case

We present maps at high spatial and spectral resolution in emission lines of C2H, c-C3H2, C4H, 12CO and C18O of the edge of the Horsehead nebula obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). The edge of the Horsehead nebula is a one-dimensional Photo--Dissociation Region (PDR) viewed almost edge-on. All hydrocarbons are detected at high signal--to--noise ratio in the PDR where intense emission is seen both in the H2 ro-vibrational lines and in the PAH mid--infrared bands. C18O peaks farther away from the cloud edge. Our observations demonstrate that C2H, cC3H2 and C4H are present in UV--irradiated molecular gas, with abundances nearly as high as in dense, well shielded molecular cores. PDR models i) need a large density gradient at the PDR edge to correctly reproduce the offset between the hydrocarbons and H2 peaks and ii) fail to reproduce the hydrocarbon abundances. We propose that a new formation path of carbon chains, in addition to gas phase chemistry, should be considered in PDRs: because of intense UV--irradiation, large aromatic molecules and small carbon grains may fragment and feed the interstellar medium with small carbon clusters and molecules in significant amount.

Deuterated Thioformaldehyde in the Barnard 1 Cloud

We present observations of the singly and doubly deuterated species of thioformaldehyde, HDCS and D$_2$CS, towards the dark cloud Barnard 1. This is the first detection of D$_2$CS in Space and in dense and cold prestellar regions. Column densities obtained using rotational diagrams and a Large Velocity Gradient model show an extremely high D-enhancement in thioformaldehyde in Barnard 1. Although the column density of H$_2$CS is smaller than that of H$_2$CO, both species show similar D-enhancements in their singly and doubly deuterated species. A chemical model -including multiply deuterated species- has been used in order to interpret the observations. Predicted rotational frequencies from laboratory data for HDCS and D$_2$CS are significantly in error when compared to the observed frequencies in Space. Consequently, we have derived new rotational constants for these two species and for H$_2$CS and H$_2$C$^{34}$S using the observed frequencies in Barnard 1. The new rotational constants allow to predict the rotational transitions of these species with the accuracy needed for the narrow line emerging from dark clouds. Rotational constants for HDCS and D$_2$CS have been obtained from the observed transitions in the laboratory and in Space.

Deuterated molecular hydrogen in the Galactic ISM. New observations along seven translucent sightlines

We present column density measurements of the HD molecule in the interstellar gas toward 17 Galactic stars. The values for the seven most heavily reddened sightlines, with E(B-V) = 0.38-0.72, are derived from observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The other ten values are from a reanalysis of spectra obtained with Copernicus. In all cases, high-resolution ground-based observations of KI and/or the CH molecule were used to constrain the gas velocity structure and to correct for saturation effects. Comparisons of the column densities HD, CH, CN, and KI in these 17 sightlines indicate that HD is most tightly correlated with CH. Stringent lower limits to the interstellar D/H ratio, derived from the HD/2H2 ratio, range from 3.7 10^(-7) to 4.3 10^(-6). Our results also suggest that the HD/H2 ratio increases with the molecular fraction f(H2) and that the interstellar D/H ratio might be obtained from HD by probing clouds with f(H2) = 1. Finally, we note an apparent relationship between the molecular fractions of hydrogen and deuterium.

A far UV study of interstellar gas towards HD34078: high excitation H2 and small scale structure - Based on observations performed by the FUSE mission and at the CFHT telescope

To investigate the presence of small scale structure in the spatial distribution of H2 molecules we have undertaken repeated FUSE UV observations of the runaway O9.5V star, HD34078. In this paper we present five spectra obtained between January 2000 and October 2002. These observations reveal an unexpectedly large amount of highly excited H2. Column densities for H2 levels from (v = 0, J = 0) up to (v = 0, J = 11) and for several v = 1 and v = 2 levels are determined. These results are interpreted in the frame of a model involving essentially two components: i) a foreground cloud (unaffected by HD34078) responsible for the H2 (J = 0, 1), CI, CH, CH+ and CO absorptions; ii) a dense layer of gas (n = 10E4 cm-3) close to the O star and strongly illuminated by its UV flux which accounts for the presence of highly excited H2. Our model successfully reproduces the H2 excitation, the CI fine-structure level populations as well as the CH, CH+ and CO column densities. We also examine the time variability of H2 absorption lines tracing each of these two components. From the stability of the J = 0, 1 and 2 damped H2 profiles we infer a 3 sigma upper limit on column density variations Delta(N(H2))/N(H2) of 5% over scales ranging from 5 to 50 AU. This result clearly rules out any pronounced ubiquitous small scale "density" structure of the kind apparently seen in HI. The lines from highly excited gas are also quite stable (equivalent to Delta(N)/N <= 30%) indicating i) that the ambient gas through which HD34078 is moving is relatively uniform and ii) that the gas flow along the shocked layer is not subject to marked instabilities

Tiny-Scale Molecular Structures in the Magellanic Clouds (Part 1)

We report on the {\small FUSE} detections of the HD and CO molecules {\bf on the lines of sight towards three Large Magellanic stars}: Sk $-$67D05, Sk $-$68D135, and Sk $-$69D246. HD is also detected for the first time {\bf on the lines of sight towards two Small Magellanic Cloud stars}: AV 95 and Sk 159. While the HD and CO abundances are expected to be lower in the Large Magellanic Cloud where molecular fractions are a third of the Galactic value and where the photodissociation flux is up to thousands times larger, we report an average HD/H$_2$ ratio of 1.4$\pm$0.5 ppm and CO/H$_2$ ratio ranging from 0.8 to 2.7 ppm similar to the Galactic ones. We tentatively identify a deuterium reservoir (hereafter D--reservoir) towards the Small Magellanic Cloud, along the light path to AV 95. We derive a D/H ratio ranging from 1. 10$^{-6}$ to 1.1 10$^{-5}$.

Carbon budget and carbon chemistry in Photon Dominated Regions

We present a study of small carbon chains and rings in Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs) performed at millimetre wavelengths. Our sample consists of the Horsehead nebula (B33), the rho,Oph L1688 cloud interface, and the cometary-shaped cloud IC63. Using the IRAM 30-m telescope, the SEST and the Effelsberg 100-m teles cope at Effelsberg., we mapped the emission of \cch, c-C3H2 and C4H, and searched for heavy hydrocarbons such as c-C3H, l-C3H, l-C3H2, l-C4H2 and C6H. The large scale maps show that small hydrocarbons are present until the edge of all PDRs, which is surprising as they are expected to be easily destroyed by UV radiation. Their spatial distribution reasonably agrees with the aromatic emission mapped in mid-IR wavelength bands. Their abundances relative to H2 are relatively high and comparable to the ones derived in dark clouds such as L134N or TMC-1, known as efficient carbon factories. In particular, we report the first detection of C6H in a PDR. We have run steady-state PDR models using several gas-phase chemical networks (UMIST95 and the New Standard Model) and conclude that both networks fail in reproducing the high abundances of some of these hydrocarbons by an order of magnitude. The high abundance of hydrocarbons in the PDR may suggest that the photo-erosion of UV-irradiated large carbonaceous compounds could efficiently feed the ISM with small carbon clusters or molecules. This new production mechanism of carbon chains and rings could overcome their destruction by the UV radiation field. Dedicated theoretical and laboratory measurements are required in order to understand and implement these additional chemical routes.

The surprising Far-UV spectrum of the polar BY Camelopardalis

We report on the first far-UV observations of the asynchronous polar BY Cam made by the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The source is known to exhibit the most extreme NV/CIV emission resonance line ratio observed among polars. The FUSE observations reveal a OVI resonance line weaker than in the prototype of polars, AM Her, with the absence of a detectable narrow component. The OVI broad line is detected with an equivalent width of the same order as in AM Her, the blueward doublet component is clearly present but the redward component is strongly affected by H2 absorption. The presence of a strong NIII line and weak CIII lines also confirms the peculiar CNO line flux. We compare the resonance CNO line intensities with the predictions of the CLOUDY plasma code coupled to a geometrical model of the accretion column. Varying the temperature and/or intensity of the ionising spectrum is unable to reproduce the observed broad line ratios. A solution is obtained by significantly altering the element abundances with a strong depletion of C, overabundance of N and a weak underabundance of O. This confirms previous suggestions of non-solar abundances which may result from redistribution in the accreted material following nova outbursts and/or the secondary nuclear evolution. A very significant H2 absorption is observed in front of the source, a possible indication for either the existence of a dense interstellar cloud or of circumstellar material.

Triply deuterated ammonia in NGC 1333

The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory has detected triply deuterated ammonia, ND3, through its 10a-00s transition near 310 GHz. Emission is found in the NGC 1333 region, both towards IRAS 4A and a position to the South-East where DCO+ peaks. In both cases, the hyperfine ratio indicates that the emission is optically thin. Column densities of ND3 are 3--6 x 10^11 cm^-2 for T_ex=10 K and twice as high for T_ex=5 K. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code and a model of the structure of the IRAS source with temperature and density gradients, the estimated ND3 abundance is 3.2 x 10^-12 if ND3/H2 is constant throughout the envelope. In the more likely case that ND3/H2D+ is constant, ND3/H2 peaks in the cold outer parts of the source at a value of 1.0 x 10^-11. To reproduce the observed NH3/ND3 abundance ratio of ~1000, grain surface chemistry requires an atomic D/H ratio of ~0.15 in the gas phase, >10 times higher than in recent chemical models. More likely, the deuteration of NH3 occurs by ion-molecule reactions in the gas phase, in which case the data indicate that deuteron transfer reactions are much faster than proton transfers.

FUSE Observations of Molecular Hydrogen in Translucent Interstellar Clouds: II. The Line of Sight Toward HD 110432

We report the second study from the FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in translucent clouds, for the line of sight toward HD 110432. This star lies beyond the Coalsack dark nebula, and with E(B-V) = 0.40, and A_V = 1.32 this line of sight bridges the gap between less extinguished diffuse cloud lines of sight with A_V \sim 1, such as Zeta Oph, and the translucent clouds with A_V \gtrsim 2 such as HD 73882. Through profile fitting and a curve-of-growth analysis, we have derived rotational populations for H2 for J = 0--7. The line of sight has a total molecular hydrogen column density, log N(H2) = 20.68 \pm 0.05 cm^{-2}, nearly identical to that toward Zeta Oph, but a factor of three less than HD 73882. The ratio of N(J=1) to N(J=0) yields a kinetic temperature T_{kin} = 63 \pm 7 K, similar to other lines of sight with A_V \gtrsim 1. The high-J lines show considerable excitation above this temperature. The high-J excitation is similar to that toward Zeta Oph, but much smaller than that toward HD 73882. Chemical modeling indicates that the physical conditions in the cloud(s) are very similar to those in the cloud(s) toward Zeta Oph. An analysis of IUE spectra of the Lyman-alpha line gives log N(H I) = 20.85 \pm 0.15 cm^{-2}. Combined with N(H2), we derive a hydrogen molecular fraction, f_{H2} = 0.58 pm 0.12, statistically identical to that found for the lines of sight toward Zeta Oph and HD 73882. We also report column densities for the HD and CO molecules. From the combined measurements of hydrogen and carbon- containing molecules, the line of sight toward HD 110432 appears quite similar to the diffuse cloud line of sight toward Zeta Oph, and quite dissimilar to the translucent cloud line of sight toward HD 73882.

FUSE Observations of the HD Molecule toward HD 73882

The Lyman and Werner band systems of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) occur in the far UV range below 1200 A. The high sensitivity of the FUSE mission can give access, at moderate resolution, to hot stars shining through translucent clouds, in the hope of observing molecular cores in which deuterium is essentially in the form of HD. Thus, the measurement of the HD/H2 ratio may become a new powerful tool to evaluate the deuterium abundance, D/H, in the interstellar medium. We report here on the detection of HD toward the high extinction star HD 73882 [E(B-V)=0.72]. A preliminary analysis is presented.
