Trace Anomaly, Thermal Power Corrections and Dimension Two condensates in the deconfined phase

The trace anomaly of gluodynamics on the lattice shows clear fingerprints of a dimension two condensate above the phase transition. The condensate manifests itself through even powers of the inverse temperature while the total perturbative contribution corresponds to a mild temperature dependence and turns out to be compatible with zero within errors. We try several resummation methods based on a renormalization group improvement. The trace anomaly data are analyzed and compared with other determinations of the dimension two condensate based on the Polyakov loop and the heavy qq free energy, yielding roughly similar numerical values. The role of glueballs near the transition is also discussed.

A Two Potential Formula and its Application to Proton-Proton Scattering

Within the framework of potential scattering theory we derive an analytical two-potential formula for the on-shell partial wave scattering amplitude. This formula embodies a large number of possible applications, including long range Coulomb forces as well as short distance singular potentials. As an example illustrating the use of the formula we analyze the determination of the strong proton-proton scattering s-wave phase shift from the experimentally determined Coulomb phase when the one pion exchange and two pion exchange chiral potentials are taken into account and analyze the relevant scales of the problem.

Renormalization of the Off-shell chiral two-pion exchange NN interactions

The renormalization, finiteness and off-shellness of short distance power like singular interactions is discussed. We show analytically that the renormalizability of the off-shell scattering amplitude relies completely on the corresponding on-shell amplitude without proliferation of new counterterms. We illustrate the result by complementary calculations both in coordinate as well as in momentum space in the simplest 1S0 channel for chiral np interactions including Two Pion Exchange.

Renormalization vs Strong Form Factors for One Boson Exchange Potentials

We analyze the One Boson Exchange Potential from the point of view of Renormalization theory. We show that the nucleon-meson Lagrangean while predicting the NN force does not predict the NN scattering matrix nor the deuteron properties unambiguously due to the appearance of short distance singularities. While the problem has traditionally been circumvented by introducing vertex functions via phenomenological strong form factors, we propose to impose physical renormalization conditions on the scattering amplitude at low energies. Working in the large Nc approximation with pi,sigma, rho and omega mesons, we show that, once these conditions are applied, results for low energy phases of proton-neutron scattering as well as deuteron properties become largely insensitive to the form factors and to the vector mesons and yield a reasonable agreement with the data, for realistic values of the coupling constants.

Meson Resonances at large Nc: Complex Poles vs Breit-Wigner Masses

The rigorous quantum mechanical definition of a resonance requires determining the pole position in the second Riemann sheet of the analytically continued partial wave scattering amplitude in the complex Mandelstam s-variable plane. For meson resonances we investigate the alternative Breit-Wigner (BW) definition within the large Nc expansion. By assuming that the pole position is ${\cal O} (N_C^{0})$ and exploiting unitarity, we show that the BW determination of the resonance mass differs from the pole position by ${\cal O} (N_C^{-2})$ terms, which can be extracted from pi-pi scattering data. For the case of the f0(600) pole, the BW scalar mass is predicted to occur at about 700 MeV while the true value is located at about 800 MeV.

Properties of the rho and sigma Mesons from Unitary Chiral Dynamics

The chiral limit of the rho and sigma masses and widths is discussed. We work within the inverse amplitude method to one loop in SU(2) ChPT and analyze the consequences that all chiral logarithms cancel out in the rho-channel, while they do not cancel for the sigma case, and how they strongly influence the properties of this latter resonance. Our results confirm and explain the different behavior of the sigma and rho poles for NC not far from 3, but we extend the analysis to very large NC, where the behavior of these two resonances is re-analyzed. We note that the rather natural requirement of consistency between resonance saturation and unitarization imposes useful constraints. By looking only at the rho-channel, and within the single resonance approximation, we find that the masses of the first vector and scalar meson nonets, invoked in the single resonance approximation, turn out to be degenerated in the large NC limit. On the contrary we show that, for sufficiently large NC, the scalar meson evolution lies beyond the applicability reach of the one-loop inverse amplitude method and if the scalar channel is also incorporated in the analysis, it may lead, in some cases, to phenomenologically inconsistent results.

Old nuclear symmetries and large N(c) as long distance symmetries in the two nucleon system

Wigner and Serber symmetries for the two-nucleon system provide unique examples of long distance symmetries in Nuclear Physics, i.e. symmetries of the meson exchange forces broken only at arbitrarily small distances. We analyze the large Nc picture as a key ingredient to understand these, so far accidental, symmetries from a more fundamental viewpoint. A set of sum rules for NN phase-shifts, NN potentials and coarse grained V_lowk NN potentials can be derived showing Wigner SU(4) and Serber symmetries not to be fully compatible everywhere. The symmetry breaking pattern found from the partial wave analysis data, high quality potentials in coordinate space at long distances and their V_lowk relatives is analyzed on the light of large N(c) contracted SU(4) symmetry. Our results suggest using large Nc potentials as long distance ones for the two-nucleon system where the meson exchange potential picture is justified and known to be consistent with large Nc counting rules. We also show that potentials based on chiral expansions do not embody the Wigner and Serber symmetries nor do they scale properly with Nc. We implement the One Boson Exchange potential realization saturated with their leading Nc contributions due to pi,sigma, rho and omega mesons. The short distance 1/r^3 singularities stemming from the tensor force can be handled by renormalization of the Schrodinger equation. A good description of deuteron properties and deuteron electromagnetic form factors in the impulse approximation for realistic values of the meson-nucleon couplings is achieved

Serber symmetry, Large Nc and Yukawa-like One Boson Exchange Potentials

The Serber force has relative orbital parity symmetry and requires vanishing NN interactions in partial waves with odd angular momentum. We illustrate how this property is well fulfilled for spin triplet states with odd angular momentum and violated for odd singlet states for realistic potentials but fails for chiral potentials. We analyze how Serber symmetry can be accommodated within a large Nc perspective when interpreted as a long distance symmetry. A prerequisite for this is the numerical similarity of the scalar and vector meson resonance masses. The conditions under which the resonance exchange potential can be approximated by a Yukawa form are also discussed. While these masses arise as poles on the Second Riemann in pi-pi scattering, we find that within the large Nc expansion the corresponding Yukawa masses correspond instead to a well defined large Nc approximation to the pole which cannot be distinguished from their location as Breit-Wigner resonances.

Renormalization of chiral two-pion exchange NN interactions with Delta-excitations: Central Phases and the Deuteron

The renormalization of the chiral np interaction with Delta-excitations in intermediate states is considered at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO) for central waves. The inclusion of the Delta-excitation as an explicit degree of freedom improves the convergence properties of the effective field theory results for np scattering with respect to Delta-less theory, and allows the existence of a deuteron bound state in the infinite cut-off limit. The 1S_0 singlet and 3S_1 triplet phase shifts reproduce data for p ~ m_pi. The role of spectral function regularization is also discussed.

The Powers of Deconfinement

The trace anomaly of gluodynamics encodes the breakdown of classical scale invariance due to interactions around the deconfinement phase transition. While it is expected that at high temperatures perturbation theory becomes applicable we show that current lattice calculations are far from the perturbative regime and are dominated instead by inverse even power corrections in the temperature, while the total perturbative contribution is estimated to be extremely small and compatible with zero within error bars. We provide an interpretation in terms of dimension-two gluon condensate of the dimensionally reduced theory which value agrees with a similar analysis of power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD.

Wigner symmetry, Large Nc and Renormalized One Boson Exchange Potential

Wigner symmetry in Nuclear Physics provides a unique example of a non-perturbative long distance symmetry, a symmetry strongly broken at short distances. We analyse the consequences of such a concept within the framework of One Boson Exchange Potentials in NN scattering and keeping the leading Nc contributions. Phenomenologically successful relations between singlet 1S0 and triplet 3S1 scattering phase shifts are provided in the entire elastic region. We establish symmetry breaking relations among non-central phase shifts which are successfully fulfilled by even-L partial waves and strongly violated by odd-L partial waves, in full agreement with large Nc requirements.

Trace Anomaly and dimension two gluon condensate above the phase transition

The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly similar numerical values.

Scalar meson mass from renormalized One Boson Exchange Potential

We determine the mass and strength of the scalar meson from NN scattering data by renormalizing the One Boson Exchange Potential. This procedure provides a great insensitivity to the unknown short distance interaction making the vector mesons marginally important and allowing for SU(3) couplings in the 1S0 channel. The scalar meson parameters are tightly constrained by low energy np. We discuss whether this scalar should be compared to the recent findings based on the Roy equations analysis of pipi scattering.

Alpha-Alpha scattering, chiral symmetry and 8Be lifetime

Alpha-alpha scattering is discussed in terms of a chiral two pion exchange potential which turns out to be attractive and singular at the origin, hence demanding renormalization. When 8Be is treated as a resonance state a model independent correlation between the Q-factor and lifetime 1/Gamma for the decay into two alpha particles arises. For a wide range of parameters compatible with potential model analyses of low energy pi-alpha scattering it is found Gamma = 4.4(4)eV} in fairly good agreement with the experimental value Gamma = 5.57 (25) eV. The remaining discrepancy as well as the phase shift up to ELAB=15MeV could be accommodated by the leading nuclear peripheral contributions due to the 3H+p and 3He+n continuum.

Renormalization of chiral two-pion exchange NN interactions. Momentum vs. coordinate space

The renormalization of the chiral np interaction in the 1S0 channel to N3LO in Weinberg counting for the long distance potential with one single momentum and energy independent counterterm is carried out. This renormalization scheme yields finite and unique results and is free of short distance off-shell ambiguities. We observe good convergence in the entire elastic range below pion production threshold and find that there are some small physical effects missing in the purely pionic chiral NN potential with or without inclusion of explicit Delta degrees of freedom. We also study the renormalizability of the standard Weinberg counting at NLO and N2LO when a momentum dependent polynomial counterterm is included. Our numerical results suggest that the inclusion of this counterterm does not yield a convergent amplitude (at NLO and N2LO).

Deuteron form factors in chiral effective theory: regulator-independent results and the role of two-pion exchange

We evaluate the deuteron charge, quadrupole, and magnetic form factors using wave functions obtained from chiral effective theory ($χ$ET) when the potential includes one-pion exchange, chiral two-pion exchange, and genuine contact interactions. We study the manner in which the results for form factors behave as the regulator is removed from the $χ$ET calculation, and compare co-ordinate- and momentum-space approaches. We show that, for both the LO and NNLO chiral potential, results obtained by imposing boundary conditions in co-ordinate space at $r=0$ are equivalent to the $Λ\to \infty$ limit of momentum-space calculations. The regulator-independent predictions for deuteron form factors that result from taking the $Λ\to \infty$ limit using the LO $χ$ET potential are in reasonable agreement with data up to momentum transfers of order 600 MeV, provided that phenomenological information for nucleon structure is employed. In this range the use of the NNLO $χ$ET potential results in only small changes to the LO predictions, and it improves the description of the zero of the charge form factor.

Alpha-alpha interaction with chiral two pion exchange and 8Be lifetime

Assuming that alpha particles are described by a scalar-isoscalar chiral invariant heavy field it is shown how chiral symmetry determines the alpha-alpha interaction at long distances unambiguously from dimensional power counting of an effective chiral Lagrangean. The leading strong contribution is given by a two pion exchange potential which turns out to be attractive and singular at the origin, hence demanding renormalization. When 8Be is treated as a resonance state a model independent correlation between the Q-factor and lifetime 1/Gamma for the decay into two alpha particles arises. For parameters compatible with potential model analyses of low energy pi-alpha scattering it is found a Breit-Wigner width Gamma = 4.3(3) eV very close to the experimental value, Gamma= 5.57 (25)eV.
