Sequential electron transport and vibrational excitations in an organic molecule coupled to few-kayer graphene electrodes

Graphene electrodes are promising candidates to improve reproducibility and stability in molecular electronics through new electrode-molecule anchoring strategies. Here we report sequential electron transport in few-layer graphene transistors containing individual curcuminoid-based molecules anchored to the electrodes via pi-pi orbital bonding. We show the coexistence of inelastic co-tunneling excitations with single-electron transport physics owing to an intermediate molecule-electrode coupling; we argue that an intermediate electron-phonon coupling is the origin of these vibrational-assisted excitations. These experimental observations are complemented with density functional theory calculations to model electron transport and the interaction between electrons and vibrational modes of the curcuminoid molecule. We find that the calculated vibrational modes of the molecule are in agreement with the experimentally observed excitations.

Gaseous time projection chambers for rare event detection: Results from the T-REX project. I. Double beta decay

As part of the T-REX project, a number of R&D and prototyping activities have been carried out during the last years to explore the applicability of gaseous Micromegas-read TPCs in rare event searches like double beta decay (DBD), axion research and low-mass WIMP searches. In both this and its companion paper, we compile the main results of the project and give an outlook of application prospects for this detection technique. While in the companion paper we focus on axions and WIMPs, in this paper we focus on the results regarding the measurement of the DBD of $^{136}$Xe in a high pressure Xe (HPXe) TPC. Particularly relevant are the results obtained in Xe + TMA mixtures with microbulk Micromegas, showing very promising results in terms of gain, stability of operation, and energy resolution at pressures up to 10 bar. TMA at levels of $\sim$1\% reduces electron diffusion by a factor of 10 with respect to pure Xe, improving the quality of the topological pattern, with a positive impact on the discrimination capability. Operation with a medium size prototype (30 cm diameter and 38 cm drift) of 1 kg of Xe at 10 bar in the fiducial volumen has allowed to test the detection concept in realistic experimental conditions. Microbulk Micromegas are able to image the DBD ionization signature with high quality while, at the same time, measuring its energy deposition with a resolution of at least $\sim$3% FWHM @ Q$_{ββ}$, and probably down to $\sim$1% FWHM. In addition, first results on the topological signature information show promising background discrimination capabilities out of reach of other experimental implementations. Moreover, microbulk Micromegas have very low levels of intrinsic radioactivity, and offer cost-effective scaling-up options. All these results demonstrate that Micromegas-read HPXe TPC is a very competitive technique for the next generation DBD experiments.

Schwarzschild black hole levitating in the hyperextreme Kerr field

The equilibrium configurations between a Schwarzschild black hole and a hyperextreme Kerr object are shown to be described by a three-parameter subfamily of the extended double-Kerr solution. For this subfamily, its Ernst potential and corresponding metric functions, we provide a physical representation which employs as arbitrary parameters the individual Komar masses and relative coordinate distance between the sources. The calculation of horizon's local angular velocity induced in the Schwarzschild black hole by the Kerr constituent yields a simple expression inversely proportional to the square of the distance parameter.

Singularities in the Kerr-Newman and charged $δ=2$ Tomimatsu-Sato spacetimes endowed with negative mass

The Kerr-Newman solution with negative mass is shown to develop a massless ring singularity off the symmetry axis. The singularity is located inside the region with closed timelike curves which has topology of a torus and lies outside the ergoregion. These characteristics are also shared by the charged Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 solution with negative total mass to which in particular a simple form in terms of four polynomials is provided.

Metric of two balancing Kerr particles in physical parametrization

The present paper aims at elaborating a completely physical representation for the general 4-parameter family of the extended double-Kerr spacetimes describing two spinning sources in gravitational equilibrium. This involved problem is solved in a concise analytical form by using the individual Komar masses and angular momenta as arbitrary parameters, and the simplest equatorially symmetric specialization of the general expressions obtained by us yields the physical representation for the well-known Dietz-Hoenselaers superextreme case of two balancing identical Kerr constituents. The existence of the physically meaningful "black hole-superextreme object" equilibrium configurations permitted by the general solution may be considered as a clear indication that the spin-spin repulsion force might actually be by far stronger than expected earlier, when only the balance between two superextreme Kerr sources was thought possible. We also present the explicit analytical formulas relating the equilibrium states in the double-Kerr and double-Reissner-Nordström configurations.

Perturbation theory and harmonic gauge propagation in general relativity, a particular example

We study how the changes of coordinates between the class of harmonic coordinates affect the analitycal solutions of Einstein's equations and we apply it to an analytical approach for stationary and axisymmetric solutions of Einstein equation used by the authors \cite{cmmr}, \cite{cugmmr} to solve the problem of a self-gravitating rigidly rotating perfect fluid compact source.

Characterization of a medium size Xe/TMA TPC instrumented with microbulk Micromegas, using low-energy $γ$-rays

NEXT-MM is a general-purpose high pressure (10 bar, $\sim25$ l active volume) Xenon-based TPC, read out in charge mode with an 8 cm $\times$8 cm-segmented 700 cm$^2$ plane (1152 ch) of the latest microbulk-Micromegas technology. It has been recently commissioned at University of Zaragoza as part of the R&D of the NEXT $0νββ$ experiment, although the experiment's first stage is currently being built based on a SiPM/PMT-readout concept relying on electroluminescence. Around 2 million events were collected during the last months, stemming from the low energy $γ$-rays emitted by a $^{241}$Am source when interacting with the Xenon gas ($ε$ = 26, 30, 59.5 keV). The localized nature of such events above atmospheric pressure, the long drift times, as well as the possibility to determine their production time from the associated $α$ particle in coincidence, allow the extraction of primordial properties of the TPC filling gas, namely the drift velocity, diffusion and attachment coefficients. In this work we focus on the little explored combination of Xe and trimethylamine (TMA) for which, in particular, such properties are largely unknown. This gas mixture offers potential advantages over pure Xenon when aimed at Rare Event Searches, mainly due to its Penning characteristics, wave-length shifting properties and reduced diffusion, and it is being actively investigated by our collaboration. The chamber is currently operated at 2.7 bar, as an intermediate step towards the envisaged 10 bar. We report here its performance as well as a first implementation of the calibration procedures that have allowed the extension of the previously reported energy resolution to the whole readout plane (10.6%FWHM@30keV).

The Breton-Manko equatorially antisymmetric binary configuration revisited

The Breton-Manko solution for two identical counter-rotating Kerr-Newman charged masses is rewritten in the physical parametrization involving Komar quantities. The new form of the solution turns out to be very convenient for verifying that the black-hole sector of the Bretón-Manko binary configuration saturates a recent geometric inequality for interacting black holes with struts discovered by Gabach Clement.

Stationary configurations of two extreme black holes obtainable from the Kinnersley-Chitre solution

Stationary axisymmetric systems of two extreme Kerr sources separated by a massless strut, which arise as subfamilies of the well-known Kinnersley-Chitre solution, are studied. We present explicit analytical formulas for the individual masses and angular momenta of the constituents and establish the range of the parameters for which such systems can be regarded as describing black holes. The mass-angular momentum relations and the interaction force in the black-hole configurations are also analyzed. Furthermore, we construct a charging generalization of the Kinnersley-Chitre metric and, as applications of the general formulas obtained, discuss two special cases describing a pair of identical co- and counterrotating extreme Kerr-Newman black holes kept apart by a conical singularity. From our analysis it follows in particular that the equality $m^2-a^2-e^2=0$ relating the mass, angular momentum per unit mass and electric charge of a single Kerr-Newman extreme black hole is no longer verified by the analogous extreme black-hole constituents in binary configurations.

A combined Majumdar-Papapetrou-Bonnor field as extreme limit of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution

The general extreme limit of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution is worked out in explicit analytical form involving prolate spheroidal coordinates. We name it the combined Majumdar-Papapetrou-Bonnor field to underline the fact that it contains as particular cases the two-body specialization of the well-known Majumdar-Papapetrou solution and Bonnor's three-parameter electrostatic field. To the latter we give a precise physical interpretation as describing a pair of non-rotating extremal black holes with unequal masses and unequal opposite charges kept apart by a strut, the absolute values of charges exceeding the respective (positive) values of masses.

On a Simple Representation of the Kinnersley-Chitre Metric

A concise form of the Kinnersley-Chitre five-parameter metric for a spinning mass is obtained by exploiting a remarkable similarity between the metric's factor structure and the analogous structure of the Tomimatsu-Sato solutions with even distortion parameter delta. The corresponding general subfamily of asymptotically flat spacetimes containing four arbitrary real parameters is considered, and all configurations describing two extreme Kerr sources separated by a strut are identified and briefly discussed.

Remarks on the mass-angular momentum relations for two extreme Kerr sources in equilibrium

The general analysis of the relations between masses and angular momenta in the configurations composed of two balancing extremal Kerr particles is made on the basis of two exact solutions arising as extreme limits of the well-known double-Kerr spacetime. We show that the inequality M^2 >= |J| characteristic of an isolated Kerr black hole is verified by all the extremal components of the Tomimatsu and Dietz-Hoenselaers solutions. At the same time, the inequality can be violated by the total masses and total angular momenta of these binary systems, and we identify all the cases when such violation occurs.

Supermassive Dark Stars: Detectable in JWST and HST

The first stars to form in the history of the universe may have been powered by dark matter annihilation rather than by fusion. This new phase of stellar evolution may have lasted millions to billions of years. These dark stars can grow to be very large, > 10^5 solar masses, and are relatively cool (~10^4 K). They are also very bright, being potentially detectable in the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope or even the Hubble Space Telescope. Once the dark matter runs out, the dark stars have a short fusion phase, before collapsing into black holes (BH). The resulting BH could serve as seeds for the (unexplained) supermassive black holes at high redshift and at the centers of galaxies.

On interrelations between Sibgatullin's and Alekseev's approaches to the construction of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations

The integral equations involved in Alekseev's "monodromy transform" technique are shown to be simple combinations of Sibgatullin's integral equations and normalizing conditions. An additional complex conjugation introduced by Alekseev in the integrands makes his scheme mathematically inconsistent; besides, in the electrovac case all Alekseev's principal value integrals contain an intrinsic error which has never been identified before. We also explain how operates a non-trivial double-step algorithm devised by Alekseev for rewriting, by purely algebraic manipulations and in a different (more complicated) parameter set, any particular specialization of the known analytically extended N-soliton electrovac solution obtained in 1995 with the aid of Sibgatullin's method.

On the equilibrium of two oppositely charged masses in general relativity

It is shown that the equilibrium configurations of two spherical masses carrying charges of opposite sign that are present in Bonnor's approximate model for two charged particles and also in the exact double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution are formed due to the additional electric field of the repulsive character induced in the black-hole constituent by its overcharged partner. A three-parameter family of such configurations is pointed out.

Analogs of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in magnetostatics and dilaton gravity: mathematical description and some physical properties

In this paper we consider a magnetic analog of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution and construct the corresponding magnetic potential A_φin the explicit form. The behavior of the resulting solution under the Harrison transformation then naturally singles out the asymmetric black diholes - configurations composed of two non-extreme black holes possessing unequal masses, and charges equal in magnitude but opposite in sign - as its most general subclass for which equilibrium of the black-hole constituents can be achieved with the aid of the external magnetic (or electric) field. We also generalize the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution to the dilaton gravity with arbitrary dilaton coupling, yielding as the result the 4-dimensional double-Gibbons-Maeda spacetime. The study of some physical properties of the solutions obtained leads, in particular, to very simple formulas for the areas of the horizons and surface gravities.

Exact solution for the simplest binary system of Kerr black holes

The full metric describing two counter-rotating identical Kerr black holes separated by a massless strut is derived in the explicit analytical form. It contains three arbitrary parameters which are the Komar mass M, Komar angular momentum per unit mass a of one of the black holes (the other has the same mass and equal but opposite angular momentum) and the coordinate distance R between the centers of the horizons. In the limit of extreme black holes, the metric becomes a special member of the Kinnersly-Chitre five-parameter family of vacuum solutions generalizing the Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 spacetime, and we present the complete set of metrical fields defining this limit.
