Infrared-enhanced Photometric Redshifts for the Dark Energy Survey Y6 Gold catalogue

The Dark Energy Survey (DES) provides optical data across 5000 square degrees of the southern sky, enabling a broad range of extragalactic and cosmological studies. Combining DES data with infrared surveys offers the opportunity to improve its photometric redshift (photo-z) estimates. We aim to investigate improvements in photometric redshift estimation achieved by combining DES optical data with infrared measurements from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and release an updated version of the catalogue. We performed a positional sky cross-match between the DES Y6 Gold catalogue matched to a spectroscopic dataset, the 2013 AllWISE Data Release, and VHS Data Release 5, in order to test these improvements using the Directional Neighbourhood Fitting (DNF) algorithm (Y6 Gold catalogue reference estimator). We additionally matched it to the unWISE catalogue to verify the performance against this deeper dataset. Adding infrared data reduces all the metrics (scatter, bias and outlier fraction) in photo-z estimates, particularly at higher redshifts in comparison with only using optical data from DES. The obtained results are globally better for the DES+WISE sample, with improvements that are statistically significant. On the other hand, the addition of the VHS bands to available depth is only marginal. The combined use of DES and WISE W1 and W2 data improves the photometric redshift metrics analysed here. The addition of VHS data at the DES and VHS depths explored here does not provide any further improvement at z less than 1.5, indicating that, under these constraints, WISE data may already capture the key infrared features and depth needed for accurate photo-z estimation. In addition, low signal-to-noise (less than 10) infrared data does not contribute to any improvement beyond the DES optical dataset.

Dark Energy Survey Year 6 Results: Redshift Calibration of the Weak Lensing Source Galaxies

Determining the distribution of redshifts for galaxies in wide-field photometric surveys is essential for robust cosmological studies of weak gravitational lensing. We present the methodology, calibrated redshift distributions, and uncertainties of the final Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (Y6) weak lensing galaxy data, divided into four redshift bins centered at $\langle z \rangle = [0.414, 0.538, 0.846, 1.157]$. We combine independent information from two methods on the full shape of redshift distributions: optical and near-infrared photometry within an improved Self-Organizing Map $p(z)$ (SOMPZ) framework, and cross-correlations with spectroscopic galaxy clustering measurements (WZ), which we demonstrate to be consistent both in terms of the redshift calibration itself and in terms of resulting cosmological constraints within 0.1$σ$. We describe the process used to produce an ensemble of redshift distributions that account for several known sources of uncertainty. Among these, imperfection in the calibration sample due to the lack of faint, representative spectra is the dominant factor. The final uncertainty on mean redshift in each bin is $σ_{\langle z\rangle} = [0.012, 0.008,0.009, 0.024]$. We ensure the robustness of the redshift distributions by leveraging new image simulations and a cross-check with galaxy shape information via the shear ratio (SR) method.

Piecewise omnigenous magnetohydrodynamic equilibria as fusion reactor candidates

In piecewise omnigenous magnetic fields, charged particles remain perfectly confined in the abscence of collisions and turbulence. This concept extends the traditional notion of omnigenity, the theoretical principle upon which most of existing magnetic fusion reactor designs, including tokamaks, are based. While piecewise omnigenity broadens the range of potentially viable stellarator reactor candidates, it is achieved by relaxing the requirement of continuity in the magnetic field strength, which could appear to pose significant challenges for the design of magnetohydrodynamic equilibria. In this work, a stellarator magnetic configuration is presented that satisfies the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equation and that achieves unprecedented levels of piecewise omnigenity. As a result, it exhibits favorable transport characteristics, including reduced bulk radial (neoclassical and turbulent transport), bootstrap current and fast ion losses. In addition, the configuration displays robust MHD stability across a range of \b{eta} values and possesses a rotational transform profile compatible with an island divertor. Collectively, these features satisfy the standard set of physics criteria required for a viable reactor candidate which, until now, were believed to be attainable only by certain types of omnigenous stellarators.

Combination of quasi-isodynamic and piecewise omnigenous magnetic fields

Due to their simultaneous optimization for radial and parallel neoclassical transport, quasi-isodynamic fields have been the main choice of stellarator magnetic configuration for most fusion reactor candidates in recent years. However, achieving a high degree of quasi-isodynamicity often comes at the cost of a strong shaping of the flux surfaces of the stellarator and complex coil geometries. In this work, the concepts of quasi-isodynamicity and piecewise omnigenity are combined to form QI-pwO fields. These fields are quasi-isodynamic in the low-field region of the magnetic surface, whereas they significantly depart from quasi-isodynamicity in the high-field region without sacrificing the neoclassical transport properties of quasi-isodynamic fields. This departure could make it easier to integrate the optimization of neoclassical transport with other physical and technological aspects of a stellarator reactor.

The PAU Survey: Measuring intrinsic galaxy alignments in deep wide fields as a function of colour, luminosity, stellar mass and redshift

We present the measurements and constraints of intrinsic alignments (IA) in the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) deep wide fields, which include the W1 and W3 fields from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) and the G09 field from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Our analyses cover 51deg$^{2}$, in the photometric redshift (photo-$z$) range $0.1 < z_{\mathrm{b}} < 1$ and a magnitude limit $i_{\mathrm{AB}}<22$. The precise photo-$z$s and the luminosity coverage of PAUS enable robust IA measurements, which are key for setting informative priors for upcoming stage-IV surveys. For red galaxies, we detect an increase in IA amplitude with both luminosity and stellar mass, extending previous results towards fainter and less massive regimes. As a function of redshift, we observe strong IA signals at intermediate ($z_{\mathrm{b}}\sim0.55$) and high ($z_{\mathrm{b}}\sim0.75$) redshift bins. However, we find no significant trend of IA evolution with redshift after accounting for the varying luminosities across redshift bins, consistent with the literature. For blue galaxies, no significant IA signal is detected, with $A_{1}=0.68_{-0.51}^{+0.53}$ when splitting only by galaxy colour, yielding some of the tightest constraints to date for the blue population and constraining a regime of very faint and low-mass galaxies.

Radial electric field and density fluctuations measured by Doppler reflectometry during the post-pellet enhanced confinement phase in W7-X

Radial profiles of density fluctuations and radial electric field, $E_r$, have been measured using Doppler reflectometry during the post-pellet enhanced confinement phase achieved, under different heating power levels and magnetic configurations, along the 2018 W7-X experimental campaign. A pronounced $E_r$-well is measured with local values as high as -40 kV/m in the radial range $ρ\sim 0.7-0.8$ during the post-pellet enhanced confinement phase. The maximum $E_r$ intensity scales with both plasma density and Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) power level following a similar trend as the plasma energy content. A good agreement is found when the experimental $E_r$ profiles are compared to simulations carried out using the neoclassical codes DKES and KNOSOS. The density fluctuation level decreases from the plasma edge toward the plasma core and the drop is more pronounced in the post-pellet enhanced confinement phase than in reference gas fuelled plasmas. Besides, in the post-pellet phase, the density fluctuation level is lower in the high iota magnetic configuration than in the standard one. In order to discriminate whether this difference is related to the differences in the plasma profiles or in the stability properties of the two configurations, gyrokinetic simulations have been carried out using the codes \texttt{stella} and EUTERPE. The simulation results point to the plasma profile evolution after the pellet injection and the stabilization effect of the radial electric field profile as the dominant players in the stabilization of the plasma turbulence.

CIEMAT-QI4X: a reactor-relevant quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration compatible with an island divertor

A four-field-period quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration is presented that exhibits small neoclassical and electrostatic turbulent transport, good fast-ion confinement over a wide range of $β$ values, small bootstrap current and an edge island structure compatible with an island divertor. This configuration, called CIEMAT-QI4X, has been obtained by building on the optimization strategy and sophisticating the methods employed in [Sánchez E. et al 2023 Nucl. Fusion 63 066037]. The optimization has been improved by incorporating metrics to control Mercier stability and by enforcing strict constraints on the rotational transform profile to achieve nested toroidal surfaces in the confinement region and a divertor island structure at the plasma edge. Specifically, CIEMAT-QI4X has a 4/4 island chain at the edge that is resilient at least up to $β=4\%$, even when the bootstrap current is included. A corresponding set of filamentary coils is presented that generates the configuration with enough accuracy to preserve the aforementioned physics properties. In terms of physics performance, CIEMAT-QI4X establishes as a candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor design.

Exploration of the parameter space of piecewise omnigenous stellarator magnetic fields

Piecewise omnigenous fields are stellarator magnetic fields that are optimized with respect to radial neoclassical transport thanks to a second adiabatic invariant that is piecewisely constant on the flux-surface. They are qualitatively different from omnigenous fields (including quasi-isodynamic or quasisymmetric fields), for which the second adiabatic invariant is a flux-surface constant. Piecewise omnigenous fields thus open an alternative path towards stellarator reactors. In this work, piecewise omnigenous fields are characterized and parametrized in a systematic manner. This is a step towards including piecewise omnigenity as an explicit design criterion in stellarator optimization, and towards a systematic study of the properties of nearly piecewise omnigenous stellarator configurations.

Reduced turbulent transport in the quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration CIEMAT-QI4

CIEMAT-QI4 is a quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration that simultaneously features very good fast-ion confinement in a broad range of $β$ values, low neoclassical transport and bootstrap current, and ideal magnetohydrodynamic stability up to $β=5\%$. In this paper it is shown that CIEMAT-QI4 also exhibits reduced turbulent transport. This is demonstrated through nonlinear electrostatic simulations with the gyrokinetic code stella, including kinetic ions and electrons. The relation between reduced turbulent transport and the fact that CIEMAT-QI4 very approximately satisfies the so-called maximum-J property is discussed.

Piecewise omnigenous stellarators

In omnigeneous magnetic fields, charged particles are perfectly confined in the absence of collisions and turbulence. For this reason, the magnetic configuration is optimized to be close to omnigenity in any candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor. However, approaching omnigenity imposes severe constraints on the spatial variation of the magnetic field. In particular, the topology of the contours of constant magnetic-field-strength on each magnetic surface must be such that there are no particles transitioning between different types of wells. This, in turn, usually leads to complicated plasma shapes and coils. This Letter presents a new family of optimized fields that display tokamak-like collisional energy transport while having transitioning particles. This result radically broadens the space of accessible reactor-relevant configurations.

First experimental observation of zonal flows in the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X

In this work, we present the first experimental evidence of the presence of zonal flow (ZF) structures in the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. Using an assortment of diagnostics, flux surface-uniform, electrostatic flow oscillations have been measured, showing a radial scale in the range of tens of ion gyroradii. Such measurements show remarkable agreement with the ZF predicted by local and global non-linear gyrokinetic simulations. These results represent the first direct measurement of ZF in a large stellarator, suitable for the validation of models in reactor relevant conditions.

Electrostatic microturbulence in W7-X: comparison of local gyrokinetic simulations with Doppler reflectometry measurements

The first experimental campaigns of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) have shown that turbulence plays a decisive role in the performance of neoclassically optimized stellarators. This stresses the importance of understanding microturbulence from the theoretical and experimental points of view. To this end, this paper addresses a comprehensive characterization of the turbulent fluctuations by means of nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations performed with the code stella in two W7-X scenarios. In the first part of the paper, the amplitude of the density fluctuations is calculated and compared with measurements obtained by Doppler reflectometry (DR) in the OP1 experimental campaigns. It is found that the trend of the fluctuations along the radius is explained by the access of the DR system to different regions of the turbulence wavenumber spectrum. In the second part of the article, frequency spectra of the density fluctuations and the zonal component of the turbulent flow are numerically characterized for comparisons against future experimental analyses. Both quantities feature broad frequency spectra with dominant frequencies of O(1)-O(10) kHz.

The PAU Survey: Photometric redshift estimation in deep wide fields

We present photometric redshifts (photo-$z$) for the deep wide fields of the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS), covering an area of $\sim$50 deg$^{2}$, for $\sim$1.8 million objects up to $i_{\textrm{AB}}<23$. The PAUS deep wide fields overlap with the W1 and W3 fields from CFHTLenS and the G09 field from KiDS/GAMA. Photo-$z$ are estimated using the 40 narrow bands (NB) of PAUS and the broad bands (BB) of CFHTLenS and KiDS. We compute the redshifts with the SED template-fitting code BCNZ, with a modification in the calibration technique of the zero-point between the observed and the modelled fluxes, that removes any dependence on spectroscopic redshift samples. We enhance the redshift accuracy by introducing an additional photo-$z$ estimate ($z_{\textrm{b}}$), obtained through the combination of the BCNZ and the BB-only photo-$z$. Comparing with spectroscopic redshifts estimates ($z_{\textrm{s}}$), we obtain a $σ_{68} \simeq 0.019$ for all galaxies with $i_{\textrm{AB}}<23$ and a typical bias $|z_{\textrm{b}}-z_{\textrm{s}}|$ smaller than 0.01. For $z_{\textrm{b}} \sim (0.10-0.75)$ we find $σ_{68} \simeq (0.003-0.02)$, this is a factor of $10-2$ higher accuracy than the corresponding BB-only results. We obtain similar performance when we split the samples into red (passive) and blue (active) galaxies. We validate the redshift probability $p(z)$ obtained by BCNZ and compare its performance with that of $z_{\textrm{b}}$. These photo-$z$ catalogues will facilitate important science cases, such as the study of galaxy clustering and intrinsic alignment at high redshifts ($z \lesssim 1$) and faint magnitudes.

Robust stellarator optimization via flat mirror magnetic fields

Stellarator magnetic configurations need to be optimized in order to meet all the required properties of a fusion reactor. In this work, it is shown that a flat-mirror quasi-isodynamic configuration (i.e. a quasi-isodynamic configuration with sufficiently small radial variation of the mirror term) can achieve small radial transport of energy and good confinement of bulk and fast ions even if it is not very close to perfect omnigeneity, and for a wide range of plasma scenarios, including low $β$ and small radial electric field. This opens the door to constructing better stellarator reactors. On the one hand, they would be easier to design, as they would be robust against error fields. On the other hand, they would be easier to operate since, both during startup and steady-state operation, they would require less auxiliary power, and the damage to plasma-facing components caused by fast ion losses would be reduced to acceptable levels.

A quasi-isodynamic configuration with good confinement of fast ions at low plasma $β$

A new quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration optimized for the confinement of energetic ions at low plasma $β$ is obtained. The numerical optimization is carried out using the STELLOPT suite of codes. New proxies to measure closeness to quasi-isodynamicity and quality of fast ion confinement have been included. The new configuration has poloidally closed contours of magnetic field strength, low magnetic shear and a rotational transform profile allowing an island divertor. It shows ideal and ballooning magnetohydrodynamic stability up to $β= 5%$, reduced effective ripple, with $ε_{eff} < 0.5%$ in the plasma core. Even at low $β$, the configuration approximately satisfies the maximum-$J$ property, and the confinement of fast ions is good at $β\sim 1.5%$ and becomes excellent at reactor values, $β\sim 4%$. An evaluation of the $D_{31}$ neoclassical mono-energetic coefficient supports the expectation of a reduced bootstrap current for plasmas confined in quasi-isodynamic configurations. A set of filamentary coils that preserve the good confinement of fast ions in the core is presented.

Instabilities and turbulence in stellarators from the perspective of global codes

In this work, a comparison of the global gyrokinetic codes EUTERPE and GENE-3D in stellarator configurations of LHD and W7-X is carried out. In linear simulations with adiabatic electrons, excellent agreement is found in the mode numbers, growth rate and frequency, mode structure, and spatial localization of the most unstable mode in LHD. In W7-X, the dependence of the growth rate and frequency with the mode number is well reproduced by both codes. The codes are also compared in linear simulations with kinetic ions and electrons in W7-X using model profiles, and reasonable agreement is found in the wavenumber of the most unstable modes. A stabilization of small-scale modes in kinetic-electron simulations with respect to the adiabatic-electron case is consistently found in both codes. Nonlinear simulations using adiabatic electrons and model profiles are also studied and the heat fluxes are compared. Very good agreement is found in the turbulent ion heat fluxes in both LHD and W7-X. Two problems that cannot be properly accounted for in local flux tube codes are studied: the localization of instabilities and turbulence over the flux surface and the influence of a background long-wavelength electric field. Good agreement between codes is found with respect to the spatial localization of instabilities and turbulence over the flux surface. The localization of saturated turbulence is found in both codes to be much smaller than that of the linear instabilities and smaller than previously reported in full-surface radially-local simulations. The influence of the electric field on the localization is also found to be smaller in the developed turbulent state than in the linear phase, and smaller than in previous works. A stabilizing effect of a constant electric field on the linearly unstable modes is found in both codes. A moderate reduction of turbulent transport by the radial electric field...

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Marginalisation over redshift distribution uncertainties using ranking of discrete realisations

Cosmological information from weak lensing surveys is maximised by dividing source galaxies into tomographic sub-samples for which the redshift distributions are estimated. Uncertainties on these redshift distributions must be correctly propagated into the cosmological results. We present hyperrank, a new method for marginalising over redshift distribution uncertainties in cosmological analyses, using discrete samples from the space of all possible redshift distributions. This is demonstrated in contrast to previous highly simplified parametric models of the redshift distribution uncertainty. In hyperrank the set of proposed redshift distributions is ranked according to a small (in this work between one and four) number of summary values, which are then sampled along with other nuisance parameters and cosmological parameters in the Monte Carlo chain used for inference. This can be regarded as a general method for marginalising over discrete realisations of data vector variation with nuisance parameters, which can consequently be sampled separately to the main parameters of interest, allowing for increased computational efficiency. We focus on the case of weak lensing cosmic shear analyses and demonstrate our method using simulations made for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We show the method can correctly and efficiently marginalise over a range of models for the redshift distribution uncertainty. Finally, we compare hyperrank to the common mean-shifting method of marginalising over redshift uncertainty, validating that this simpler model is sufficient for use in the DES Year 3 cosmology results presented in companion papers.

Turbulent transport of impurities in 3D devices

A large diffusive turbulent contribution to the radial impurity transport in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) plasmas has been experimentally inferred during the first campaigns and numerically confirmed by means of gyrokinetic simulations with the code stella. In general, the absence of strong impurity accumulation during the initial W7-X campaigns is attributed to this diffusive term. In the present work the diffusive contribution is also calculated in other stellarator plasmas. In particular, the diffusion (D) and convection (V) coefficients of carbon and iron impurities produced by ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence are obtained for W7-X, LHD, TJ-II and NCSX. The results show that, although the size of D and V can differ across the four devices, inward convection is found for all of them. For W7-X, TJ-II and NCSX the two coefficients are comparable and the turbulent peaking factor is surprisingly similar. In LHD, appreciably weaker diffusive and convective impurity transport and significantly larger turbulent peaking factor are predicted. All this suggests that ITG turbulence, although not strongly, would lead to negative impurity density gradients in stellarators. Then, considering mixed ITG/Trapped Electron Mode (TEM) turbulence for the specific case of W7-X, it has been quantitatively assessed to what degree pellet fueled reduced turbulence scenarios feature reduced turbulent transport of impurities as well. The results for trace iron impurities show that, although their turbulent transport is not entirely suppressed, a significant reduction of V and a stronger decrease of D are found. Although the diffusion is still above neoclassical levels, the neoclassical convection would gain under such conditions a greater specific weight on the dynamics of impurities in comparison with standard ECRH scenarios.
