Fermi surface reconstruction and dimensional topology change in Nd-doped CeCoIn$_5$

We performed low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements on a Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ series, for x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, and 1, down to T = 40 mK using torque magnetometry in magnetic felds up to 35 T. Our results indicate that a Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction occurs from a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) topology for Nd-2% to a rather three-dimensional (3D) for Nd-5%, thus reducing the possibility of perfect FS nesting. The FS evolves further with increasing Nd content with no observed divergence of the effective mass between Nd-2% and 10%, consistent with the crossing of a spin density wave (SDW) type of quantum critical point (QCP). Our results elucidate the origin of the Q-phase observed at the 5% Nd-doping level [Raymond et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 83, 013707 (2014)].

The nature of spin excitations in the one-third magnetization plateau phase of Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

Magnetization plateaus in quantum magnets---where bosonic quasiparticles crystallize into emergent spin superlattices---are spectacular yet simple examples of collective quantum phenomena escaping classical description. While magnetization plateaus have been observed in a number of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets, the description of their magnetic excitations remains an open theoretical and experimental challenge. Here, we investigate the dynamical properties of the triangular-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ in its one-third magnetization plateau phase using a combination of nonlinear spin-wave theory and neutron scattering measurements. The agreement between our theoretical treatment and the experimental data demonstrates that magnons behave semiclassically in the plateau in spite of the purely quantum origin of the underlying magnetic structure. This allows for a quantitative determination of Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ exchange parameters. We discuss the implication of our results to the deviations from semiclassical behavior observed in zero-field spin dynamics of the same material and conclude they must have an intrinsic origin.

Field Driven Quantum Criticality in the Spinel Magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$

We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of spin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as an unconventional $T^2$-dependent specific heat and temperature independent mean free path for the thermal transport. We complete the full phase diagram of ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ under the external magnetic field and propose the possibility of frustrated quantum criticality with extended densities of critical modes to account for the unusual low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the criticality. Our results reveal that ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ is a rare example of 3D magnet exhibiting a field-driven quantum criticality with unconventional properties.

Electrical-current-induced magnetic hysteresis in self-assembled vertically aligned La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3:ZnO-nanopillar composites

Magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM) is poised to become a next-generation information storage device. Yet, many materials challenges remain unsolved before it can become a widely used memory storage solution. Among them, an urgent need is to identify a material system that is suitable for downscaling and is compatible with low-power logic applications. Self-assembled, vertically-aligned La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3:ZnO nanocomposites, in which La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3 (LSMO) matrix and ZnO nanopillars form an intertwined structure with coincident-site-matched growth occurring between the LSMO and ZnO vertical interfaces, may offer new MRAM applications by combining their superior electric, magnetic (B), and optical properties. In this paper, we show the results of electrical current induced magnetic hysteresis in magneto-resistance measurements in these nano-pillar composites. We observe that when the current level is low, for example, 1 uA, the magneto-resistance displays a linear, negative, non-hysteretic B field dependence. Surprisingly, when a large current is used, I > 10 uA, a hysteretic behavior is observed when the B field is swept in the up and down directions. This hysteresis weakens as the sample temperature is increased. A possible spin-valve mechanism related to this electrical current induced magnetic hysteresis is proposed and discussed.

Search for a nematic phase in quasi-2D antiferromagnet CuCrO2 by NMR in electric field

The magnetic phase diagram of CuCrO2 was studied with a novel method of simultaneous Cu NMR and electric polarization techniques with the primary goal of demonstrating that regardless of cooling history of the sample the magnetic phase with specific helmet-shaped NMR spectra associated with interplanar disorder possesses electric polarization. Our result unequivocally confirms the assumption of Sakhratov et al. Phys. Rev. B \bf{94}, 094410 (2016) that the high-field low-temperature phase is in fact a 3D-polar phase characterised by a 3D magnetic order with tensor order parameter. In comparison with the results obtained in pulsed fields, a modified phase diagram is introduced defining the upper boundary of the first-order transition from the 3D-spiral to the 3D-polar phase.

Magnetic ground states and magnetodielectric effect in $R$Cr(BO$_3$)$_2$ ($R$ = Y and Ho)

The layered perovskites $R$Cr(BO$_3$)$_2$ ($R$ = Y and Ho) with magnetic triangular lattices were studied by performing ac/dc susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and dielectric constant measurements. The results show (i) both samples' Cr$^{3+}$ spins order in a canted antiferromagnetic structure with $T_N$ around 8-9 K, while the Ho$^{3+}$ ions do not order down to $T$ = 1.5 K in HoCr(BO$_3$)$_2$; (ii) when a critical magnetic field H$_{C}$ around 2-3 T is applied below $T_{N}$, the Cr$^{3+}$ spins in the Y-compound and both the Cr$^{3+}$ and Ho$^{3+}$ spins in the Ho-compound order in a ferromagnetic state; (iii) both samples exhibit dielectric constant anomalies around the transition temperature and critical field, but the Ho-compound displays a much stronger magnetodielectric response. We speculate that this is due to the magnetostriction which depends on both of the Cr$^{3+}$ and the Ho$^{3+}$ ions' ordering in the Ho-compound. Moreover, by using linear spin wave theory to simulate the inelastic neutron scattering data, we estimated the Y-compound's intralayer and interlayer exchange strengths as ferromagnetic J$_{1}$ = -0.12 meV and antiferromagnetic J$_{2}$ = 0.014 meV, respectively. The competition between different kinds of superexchange interactions results in the ferromagnetic intralayer interaction.

Robust pinning of magnetic moments in pyrochlore iridates

Pyrochlore iridates A2Ir2O7 (A = rare earth elements, Y or Bi) hold great promise for realizing novel electronic and magnetic states owing to the interplay of spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation and geometrical frustration. A prominent example is the formation of all-in/all-out (AIAO)antiferromagnetic order in the Ir4+ sublattice that comprises of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Here we report on an unusual magnetic phenomenon, namely a cooling-field induced shift of magnetic hysteresis loop along magnetization axis, and its possible origin in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic Ir defects (e.g. Ir3+). In a simple model, we attribute the magnetic hysteresis loop to the formation of ferromagnetic droplets in the AIAO antiferromagnetic background. The weak ferromagnetism originates from canted antiferromagnetic order of the Ir4+ moments surrounding each non-magnetic Ir defect. The shift of hysteresis loop can be understood quantitatively based on an exchange-bias like effect in which the moments at the shell of the FM droplets are pinned by the AIAO AFM background via mainly the Heisenberg (J) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (D) interactions. The magnetic pinning is stable and robust against the sweeping cycle and sweeping field up to 35 T, which is possibly related to the magnetic octupolar nature of the AIAO order.

Putative spin liquid in the triangle-based iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.

Structural and magnetic properties of two branches of the Tripod Kagome Lattice family A$_{2}$RE$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb)

We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of two branches of the rare earth Tripod Kagome Lattice (TKL) family A$_{2}$RE$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb; here, we use abbreviation \textit{A-RE}, as in \textit{MgPr} for Mg$_{2}$Pr$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$), which complements our previously reported work on \textit{MgDy}, \textit{MgGd}, and \textit{MgEr} \cite{TKL}. The present susceptibility ($χ_{dc}$, $χ_{ac}$) and specific heat measurements reveal various magnetic ground states, including the non-magnetic singlet state for \textit{MgPr}, \textit{ZnPr}; long range orderings (LROs) for \textit{MgGd}, \textit{ZnGd}, \textit{MgNd}, \textit{ZnNd}, and \textit{MgYb}; a long range magnetic charge ordered state for \textit{MgDy}, \textit{ZnDy}, and potentially for \textit{MgHo}; possible spin glass states for \textit{ZnEr}, \textit{ZnHo}; the absence of spin ordering down to 80 mK for \textit{MgEr}, \textit{MgTb}, \textit{ZnTb}, and \textit{ZnYb} compounds. The ground states observed here bear both similarities as well as striking differences from the states found in the parent pyrochlore systems. In particular, while the TKLs display a greater tendency towards LRO, the lack of LRO in \textit{MgHo}, \textit{MgTb} and \textit{ZnTb} can be viewed from the standpoint of a balance among spin-spin interactions, anisotropies and non-Kramers nature of single ion state. While substituting Zn for Mg changes the chemical pressure, and subtly modifies the interaction energies for compounds with larger RE ions, this substitution introduces structural disorder and modifies the ground states for compounds with smaller RE ions (Ho, Er, Yb).

Ba8CoNb6O24: a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the 2D limit

The perovskite Ba8CoNb6O24 comprises equilateral effective spin-1/2 Co2+ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic layers. Susceptibility, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements combined with high-temperature series expansions and spin-wave calculations confirm that Ba8CoNb6O24 is basically a twodimensional (2D) magnet with no detectable spin anisotropy and no long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K. In other words, Ba8CoNb6O24 is very close to be a realization of the paradigmatic spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model, which is not expected to exhibit symmetry breaking at finite temperature according to the Mermin and Wagner theorem.

Evolution of the Fermi surface of the nematic superconductors FeSe1-xSx

We investigate the evolution of the Fermi surfaces and electronic interactions across the nematic phase transition in single crystals of FeSe1-xSx using Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in high magnetic fields up to 45 tesla in the low temperature regime. The unusually small and strongly elongated Fermi surface of FeSe increases monotonically with chemical pressure, x, due to the suppression of the in-plane anisotropy except for the smallest orbit which suffers a Lifshitz-like transition once nematicity disappears. Even outside the nematic phase the Fermi surface continues to increase, in stark contrast to the reconstructed Fermi surface detected in FeSe under applied external pressure. We detect signatures of orbital-dependent quasiparticle mass renomalization suppressed for those orbits with dominant dxz=yz character, but unusually enhanced for those orbits with dominant dxy character. The lack of enhanced superconductivity outside the nematic phase in FeSe1-xSx suggest that nematicity may not play the essential role in enhancing Tc in these systems.

Electronic Griffiths Phase in the Te - Doped Semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$

We report on the emergence of an Electronic Griffiths Phase (EGP) in the doped semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$, predicted for disordered insulators with random localized moments in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements of Fe(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals show signatures of disorder-induced non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Wilson ratio expected for strong electronic correlations. The EGP states are found on the metallic boundary, between the insulating state ($x = 0$) and a long-range albeit weak magnetic order ($x \geq 0.075$).

Statics and dynamics of the highly correlated spin ice Ho2Ge2O7

The pyrochlore Ho2Ge2O7 is a new highly correlated spin ice material. Physical property measurements including x-ray diffraction, dc susceptibility and ac susceptibility, confirm that it shares the distinctive characteristics of other known spin ices. Polarized neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample, combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) refinements, give unique information about the spin ice state in Ho2Ge2O7. RMC refinements are used to fit the powder magnetic diffuse scattering and predict the single crystal magnetic scattering of Ho2Ge2O7, demonstrating consistency with spin ice behavior.

Inter-planar coupling dependent magnetoresistivity in high purity layered metals

The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically associated with the Fermi points in the field-induced quasi-one-dimensional electronic dispersion, implying that it results from the axial anomaly among these Fermi points. In its original formulation, the anomaly is predicted to violate separate number conservation laws for left- and right-handed chiral- (e.g. Weyl) fermions. Its observation in PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ suggests that the anomaly affects the transport of clean conductors, particularly near the quantum limit.

Canted Magnetic Ground State of Quarter-Doped Manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er)

Polycrystalline samples of the quarter-doped manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were studied by X-ray diffraction and AC/DC susceptibility measurements. All five samples are orthorhombic and exhibit similar magnetic properties: enhanced ferromagnetism below $T_1$ ($\sim80$ K) and a spin glass (SG) state below $T_{SG}$ ($\sim30$ K). With increasing $R^{3+}$ ionic size, both $T_1$ and $T_{SG}$ generally increase. The single crystal neutron diffraction results on Tb$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ revealed that the SG state is mainly composed of a short-range ordered version of a novel canted (i.e. noncollinear) antiferromagnetic spin state. Furthermore, calculations based on the double exchange model for quarter-doped manganites reveal that this new magnetic phase provides a transition state between the ferromagnetic state and the theoretically predicted spin-orthogonal stripe phase.

Ground state selection in XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets R$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb)

Elastic neutron scattering, ac susceptibility, and specific heat experiments on the pyrochlores Er$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Yb$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ show that both systems are antiferromagnetically ordered in the $Γ_5$ manifold. The ground state is a $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Er sample and a $ψ_{2}$ or $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Yb sample, which suggests "Order by Disorder"(ObD) physics. Furthermore, we unify the various magnetic ground states of all known R$_{2}$B$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb, B = Sn, Ti, Ge) compounds through the enlarged XY type exchange interaction $J_{\pm}$ under chemical pressure. The mechanism for this evolution is discussed in terms of the phase diagram proposed in the theoretical study [Wong et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 144402, (2013)].

High pressure floating zone growth and structural properties of ferrimagnetic quantum paraelectric BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$

High quality single crystals of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ were grown using the floating zone technique in flowing oxygen pressurized to 100 atm. Single crystal neutron diffraction was used to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ at 4 K and 295 K. At both temperatures, there exist local electric dipoles formed by the off-mirror-plane displacements of magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ ions at the bipyramidal sites. The displacement at 4 K is about half of that at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows no anomaly associated with long range polar ordering in the temperature range from 1.90-300 K. The inverse dielectric permittivity, $1/\varepsilon$, along the c-axis shows a $T^2$ temperature dependence between 10 K and 20 K, with a significantly reduced temperature dependence displayed below 10 K. Moreover, as the sample is cooled below 1.4 K there is an anomalous sharp upturn in $1/\varepsilon$. These features resemble those of classic quantum paraelectrics such as SrTiO$_3$. The presence of the upturn in $1/\varepsilon$ indicates that BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ is a critical quantum paraelectric system with Fe$^{3+}$ ions involved in both magnetic and electric dipole formation.

Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra- and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.
