Sharp Coherence Crossover and Multimode Phase Control in Coupled Exciton-Polariton Condensates

We investigate the formation of mutual coherence and deterministic phase control in a multimode exciton-polariton system realized in two optically induced traps with tunable intertrap coupling. As the coupling channel between the traps is progressively opened, the mutual first-order coherence rises sharply from nearly zero to values close to unity, revealing a threshold-like crossover from weakly correlated to highly coherent dynamics. We demonstrate deterministic multimode phase control with a short spatially localized nonresonant pulse, which allows the phase relations between selected polariton condensate modes to be set while keeping their amplitudes nearly unchanged. The induced phase transformation is read out directly from time-resolved interferograms and realized for different sets of modes in both intermediate- and high-coherence regimes. Within a reduced four-mode description, the control pulse implements an effective phase operator on the coherent multimode field with a fidelity exceeding 0.995. The same approach can be extended to larger networks of coupled traps, offering a route to optical control over phase relations in increasingly complex multimode polariton states.

Persistent polarization oscillations in ring-shape polariton condensates

We predict the limit cycle solution for a ring-shape bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined in an optically induced rotating trap. The limit cycle manifests itself with polarization oscillations on a characteristic timescale of tens of picoseconds. The effect arises due to the interplay between orbital motion and the polarization degree of freedom. It is specific to spinor bosonic condensates and would be absent in a scalar case, where a bi-stability of stationary solutions would be observed instead. This work offers a tool of initialisation and control of qubits based on superpositions of polariton condensates characterised by different topologic charges.

Vorticity of polariton condensates in rotating traps

This work is inspired by recent experiments on the formation of vortices in exciton-polariton condensates placed in rotating optical traps. We study theoretically the dynamics of formation of such vortices and elucidate the fundamental role of the mode competition effect in determining the properties of stationary polariton states triggered by stimulated scattering of exciton-polaritons. The interplay between linear and non-linear effects is shown to result in a peculiar polariton dynamics. However, near the lasing threshold, the predominant contribution of the nonlinear effects is the saturation of the linear gain.

Spin resonance induced by a mechanical rotation of a polariton condensate

We study theoretically the polarization dynamics in a ring-shape bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined in a rotating trap. The interplay between the rotating potential and TE-TM splitting of polariton modes offers a tool of control over the spin state and the angular momentum of the condensate. Specific selection rules describing the coupling of pseudospin and angular momentum are formulated. The resonant coupling between states having linear and circular polarizations leads to the polarization beats. The effect may be seen as a polariton analogy to the electronic magnetic resonance in the presence of constant and rotating magnetic fields. Remarkably, spin beats are induced by a purely mechanical rotation of the condensate.

Superfluid currents in half-moon polariton condensates

We excite exciton-polariton condensates in half-moon shapes by the non-resonant optical excitation of GaAs-based cylindrical pillar microcavities. In this geometry, the π-jump of the phase of the condensate wave function coexists with a gradual {\pm π} phase variation between two horns of the half-moon. We switch between clockwise and counter-clockwise phase currents by slightly shifting the excitation spot on the surface of the pillar. Half-moon condensates are expected to reveal features of two-level quantum systems similar to superconducting flux qubits

Spin domains in one-dimensional conservative polariton solitons

We report stable orthogonally polarised domains in high-density polariton solitons propagating in a semiconductor microcavity wire. This effect arises from spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions and pump-induced imbalance of polariton spin populations. The interactions result in an effective magnetic field acting on polariton spin across the soliton profile, leading to the formation of polarisation domains. Our experimental findings are in excellent agreement with theoretical modelling taking into account these effects.

Artificial gravitation effect on spin-polarized exciton-polaritons

The pseudospin dynamics of long-living exciton-polaritons in a wedged 2D cavity has been studied theoretically accounting for the external magnetic field effect. The cavity width variation plays the role of the artificial gravitational force acting on a massive particle: exciton-polariton. A semi-classical model of the spin-polarization dynamics of ballistically propagating exciton-polaritons has been developed. It has been shown that for the specific choise of the magnetic field magnitude and the initial polariton wave vector the polariton polarization vector tends to an attractor on the Poincare sphere. Based on this effect, the switching the polariton polarization in the ballistic regime has been demonstrated. The self-interference of the polariton field emitted by a point-like source has been shown to induce the formation of interference patterns reminiscent of the interference patterns of cylindrical and plane waves.

Zitterbewegung of exciton-polaritons

Macroscopic wave packets of spin-polarized exciton-polaritons in two-dimensional microcavities experience the zitterbewegung, the effect manifested by the appearance of the oscillatory motion of polaritons in the direction normal to the initial propagation direction. The oscillating trajectories of exciton-polaritons are adjustable by the control parameters: the splitting of the longitudinal and transverse exciton-polariton modes, the wave vector and the width of the resonant cw pump. Our theoretical analysis supported by the numerical calculations allowed to optimize values of the control parameters suitable for a direct experimental observation of the zitterbewegung effect.

Persistent circular currents of exciton-polaritons in cylindrical pillar microcavities

We have experimentally observed an eddy current of exciton polaritons arising in a cylindrical GaAs/AlGaAs pillar microcavity under the nonresonant optical pumping. The polariton current manifests itself in a Mach-Zehnder interferometry image as a characteristic spiral that occurs due to the interference of the light emitted by an exciton-polariton condensate with a spherical wave artificially shaped from the emission of the same condensate. We have experimentally observed the condensates with the topological charges m = +1, m = -1 and m = -2. The interference pattern corresponding to the m = -2 current represents the twin spiral emerging from the center of the micropillar.

Light propagation in tunable exciton-polariton one-dimensional photonic crystals

Simulations of propagation of light beams in specially designed multilayer semiconductor structures (one-dimensional photonic crystals) with embedded quantum wells reveal characteristic optical properties of resonant hyperbolic metamaterials. A strong dependence of the refraction angle and the optical beam spread on the exciton radiative lifetime is revealed. We demonstrate the strong negative refraction of light and the control of the group velocity of light by an external bias through its effect upon the exciton radiative properties.

Tunneling-assisted optical information storage with lattice polariton solitons in cavity-QED arrays

Considering two-level media in the array of weakly coupled nano-cavities, we reveal a variety of dynamical regimes, such as diffusion, self-trapping, soliton, and breathers for the wave-packets in the presence of photon tunneling processes between the next-nearest cavities. We focus our attention on the low branch (LB) bright polariton soliton formation, due to the two-body polariton-polariton scattering processes. When detuning frequency is manipulated adiabatically, the low-branch lattice polariton localized states, i.e., that are solitons and breathers evolving between photon-like and matter-like states, are shown to act as carriers for spatially distributed storage and retrieval of optical information.

Solitons in cavity-QED arrays containing interacting qubits

We reveal the existence of polariton soliton solutions in the array of weakly coupled optical cavities, each containing an ensemble of interacting qubits. An effective complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived in the continuum limit taking into account the effects of cavity field dissipation and qubit dephasing. We have shown that an enhancement of the induced nonlinearity can be achieved by two order of the magnitude with a negative interaction strength which implies a large negative qubit-field detuning as well. Bright solitons are found to be supported under perturbations only in the upper (optical) branch of polaritons, for which the corresponding group velocity is controlled by tuning the interacting strength. With the help of perturbation theory for solitons, we also demonstrate that the group velocity of these polariton solitons is suppressed by the diffusion process.

Nonlinear properties and stabilities of polaritonic crystals beyond the low-excitation-density limit

Coherent properties of a two dimensional spatially periodic structure - polaritonic crystal (PolC) formed by trapped two-level atoms in an optical cavity array interacting with a light field, are analyzed. By considering the wave function overlapping both for photonic and atomic states, a cubic-quintic complex nonlinear Schrodinger equation (CNLSE) is derived for the dynamics of coupled atom-light states - wave function of low branch (LB) polaritons, associated with PolC in the continuous limit. The variational approach predicts that a stable ground state wave function of PolC exists but is accompanied by an oscillating width. For a negative scattering length, the wave function collapses in the presence of a small quintic nonlinearity appear due to a three body polariton interaction. Studying non-equilibrium (dissipative) dynamics of polaritons with adiabatic approximation we have shown that the collapse of PolC wave function can be prevented even in the presence of small decaying of a number of polariton particles.
