Strong decays of baryons and missing resonances

We provide results for the open-flavor strong decays of strange and non-strange baryons into a baryon-vector/pseudoscalar meson pair. The decay amplitudes are computed in the $^3P_0$ pair-creation model, where $s\bar{s}$ pair-creation suppression is included for the first time in the baryon sector, in combination with the U(7) and hypercentral models. The effects of this $s\bar{s}$ suppression mechanism cannot be re-absorbed in a redefinition of the model parameters or in a different choice of the $^3P_0$ model vertex factor. Our results for the decay amplitudes are compared with the existing experimental data and previous $^3P_0$ and elementary meson emission model calculations. In this respect, we show that distinct quark models differ in the number of missing resonances they predict and also in the quantum numbers of states. Therefore, future experimental results will be important in order to disentangle different models of baryon structure. Finally, in the appendices, we provide some details of our calculations, including the derivation of all relevant flavor couplings with strangeness-suppression. This derivation may be helpful to calculate the open-flavor decay amplitudes starting from other models of baryons.

Baryons in the unquenched quark model

In this contribution, we present the unquenched quark model as an extension of the constituent quark model that includes the effects of sea quarks via a $^{3}P_{0}$ quark-antiquark pair-creation mechanism. Particular attention is paid to the spin and flavor content of the proton, magnetic moments and $β$ decays of octet baryons.

Open flavor strong decays

In this contribution, we discuss the results of a QM calculation of the open-flavor strong decays of **** light nucleon resonances. These are the results of a recent calculation, where we used a modified $^3P_0$ model for the amplitudes and the U(7) algebraic model and the Hypercentral Quark Model to predict the baryon spectrum. The decay amplitudes are compared with the existing experimental data.

An interacting quark-diquark model. Strange and nonstrange baryon spectroscopy and other observables

We describe the relativistic interacting quark-diquark model formalism and its application to the calculation of strange and nonstrange baryon spectra. The results are compared to the existing experimental data. We also discuss the application of the model to the calculation of other baryon observables, like baryon magnetic moments, open-flavor strong decays and baryon masses with self-energy corrections.

Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX) at Jefferson Lab

MeV-GeV dark matter (DM) is theoretically well motivated but remarkably unexplored. This proposal presents the MeV-GeV DM discovery potential for a $\sim$1 m$^3$ segmented CsI(Tl) scintillator detector placed downstream of the Hall A beam-dump at Jefferson Lab, receiving up to 10$^{22}$ electrons-on-target (EOT) in 285 days. This experiment (Beam-Dump eXperiment or BDX) would be sensitive to elastic DM-electron and to inelastic DM scattering at the level of 10 counts per year, reaching the limit of the neutrino irreducible background. The distinct signature of a DM interaction will be an electromagnetic shower of few hundreds of MeV, together with a reduced activity in the surrounding active veto counters. A detailed description of the DM particle $χ$ production in the dump and subsequent interaction in the detector has been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Different approaches have been used to evaluate the expected backgrounds: the cosmogenic background has been extrapolated from the results obtained with a prototype detector running at INFN-LNS (Italy), while the beam-related background has been evaluated by GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed experiment will be sensitive to large regions of DM parameter space, exceeding the discovery potential of existing and planned experiments in the MeV-GeV DM mass range by up to two orders of magnitude.

Electroproduction ratios of Baryon-Meson states and Strangeness Suppression

We describe the electroproduction ratios of baryon-meson states from nucleon, inferring from the sea quarks in the nucleon using an extension of the quark model that takes into account the sea. As a result we provide, with no adjustable parameters, the predictions of ratios of exclusive meson-baryon final states:$ΛK^+$, $Σ^{*}K$, $ΣK$, $pπ^0$, and $nπ^+$. These predictions are in agreement with the new Jlab experimental data showing that sea quarks play an important role in the electroproduction. We also predicted further ratios of exclusive reactions that can be measured and tested in future experiments. In particular, we suggested new experiments on deuterium and tritium. Such measurements can provide crucial test of different predictions concerning the structure of nucleon and its sea quarks helping to solve an outstanding problem. Finally, we computed the so called strangeness suppression factor, $λ_s$, that is the suppression of strange quark-antiquarks compared to nonstrange pairs, and we found that our finding with this simple extension of the quark model is in good agreement with the results of Jlab and CERN experiments.

Workshop on Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab (KL2016) Mini-Proceedings

The KL2016 Workshop is following the Letter of Intent LoI12-15-001 "Physics Opportunities with Secondary KL beam at JLab" submitted to PAC43 with the main focus on the physics of excited hyperons produced by the Kaon beam on unpolarized and polarized targets with GlueX setup in Hall D. Such studies will broaden a physics program of hadron spectroscopy extending it to the strange sector. The Workshop was organized to get a feedback from the community to strengthen physics motivation of the LoI and prepare a full proposal. Further details about the Workshop can be found on the web page of the conference: http://www.jlab.org/conferences/kl2016/index.html .

Hadron Spectroscopy in the Unquenched Quark Model

We present the last applications of the unquenched quark model (UQM) to the description of flavour asymmetry and strangeness in the proton when baryon-meson components are included. In the meson sector, the UQM is used to calculate the charmonium and bottomonium spectra with self-energy corrections due to the coupling to the meson-meson continuum.

The baryon spectrum and the hypercentral Constituent Quark Model

The description of the baryon spectrum is performed using the hypercentral Consituent Quark Model (hCQM), mainly in comparison with the harmonic oscillator (h.o.). Recentlly many new states, at various levels of confidence have been observed, leading to a softening of the missing resonance problem in the case of positive parity states. However, the number of negative states is higher that predicted by the commonly used h.o. scheme and therefore one is forced to take into account also the higher energy shells, which contain an overall number of states much greater than the observed one. It is shown that, thanks to the peculiar level scheme of the hCQM, the recently observed negative parity states can be considered as belonging to the lower shells, keeping the missing resonance problem within more acceptable limits.

Higher charmonia and bottomonia. Nature of the X(3872)

In this contribution, we will discuss our unquenched quark model re- sults for the spectra of cc and bb states. The spectra are calculated in the unquenched quark model formalism, where the physical mass of a meson is the sum of a bare mass contribution plus a self-energy correc- tion, due to the coupling to the meson-meson continuum. We will also discuss the quark structure of the X(3872). Its open-flavor and radiative decays are calculated in the quark model formalism. In our interpreta- tion, the wave function of the X(3872) is the sum of two contributions, a cc core plus higher Fock components, due to meson-meson continuum components. Our results for the spectra, open-flavor and radiative decays are compared to the existing experimental data.

Electromagnetic Form Factors and the Hypercentral CQM

New results about the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are obtained with a semirelativistic version of the hypercentral constituent quark model (hCQM) and a relativistic current. The complex structure of the constituent quarks is taken into account implicitly by means of phenomenological constituent quark form factors. We obtain a detailed reproduction of the experimental data up to $5 GeV^2$, moreover our findings about constituent quark root mean square radii are of the same order than the recent ones obtained analyzing the proton structure functions.

The Hypercentral Constituent Quark Model and its symmetry

The hypercentral CQM, which is inspired by Lattice QCD calculations for quark-antiquark potentials, is presented, stressing its underlying symmetry. Its results for the spectrum, the helicity amplitudes and the elastic form factors are briefly reported. In the latter case the model has allowed to show, for the first time in the framework of a quark model, that relativistic effects are responsible for a deviation from the usually accepted dipole behaviour, in agreement with recent data taken at the Jefferson Lab.

SU(6)-breaking symmetry and the ratio of proton momentum distributions

The ratio between the anomalous magnetic moments of proton and neutron has recently been suggested to be connected to the ratio of proton momentum fractions carried by valence quarks. This relation has been obtained within a parametrization of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) \cite{gpv}, but it is completely independent of such a parametrization.\\ It will be shown that using different CQMs this relation holds within a few percent accuracy. This agreement is based on what all the CQMs have in common: the effective degrees of freedom of the three constituent quarks and the underlying SU(6) symmetry.\\ On the other hand, the experimental value of the ratio is not reproduced by CQMs. This means that the SU(6)-breaking mechanism contained in the phenomenological partonic distributions does not correspond to the SU(6) breaking mechanism implemented in the CQMs we have analyzed \cite{noi03}.\\ We will also show how this relation can be used in order to understand in which way to implement an $SU(6)$-breaking mechanism and to test models.

High $Q^2$ behavior of the electromagnetic form factors in the relativistic hypercentral CQM

The ratio $R_p$ between the electric and magnetic proton form factors has been recently measured at JLab up to $Q^2=8.5 ~GeV^2$. We have extended the calculation of the nucleon form factors with the hypercentral Constituent Quark Model and compared them with the data on $R_p$ and on the $Q^2$ behavior of the ratio $Q^2 F_2/F_1$. In both cases the theoretical curves agree with the experimental points.
