Highlights from the NA60 experiment

The NA60 experiment is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS. It has measured the dimuon yield in Indium--Indium collisions with an In beam of 158 AGeV/c and in p-A collisions with a proton beam of 400 and 158 AGeV/c. The results allow to address three important physics topics, namely the study of the rho spectral function in nuclear collisions, the clarification of the origin of the dimuon excess measured by NA50 in the intermediate mass range, and the J/psi suppression pattern in a collision system different from Pb-Pb. An overview of these results will be given in this paper.

J/$ψ$ production in In-In and p-A collisions

The NA60 experiment studies dimuon production in In-In and p-A collisions at the CERN SPS. We report recent results on \jpsi production, measured through its muon pair decay. As a function of centrality, we show that in In-In the \jpsi yield is suppressed beyond expectations from nuclear absorption. We present also for the first time results on \jpsi production in p-A collisions at 158 GeV, the same energy of the nucleus-nucleus data. For both p-A and In-In we show preliminary results on \psip suppression. Finally, we have studied the kinematical distributions of the \jpsi produced in In-In collisions. We present results on transverse momentum and rapidity, as well as on the angular distribution of the \jpsi decay products.

J/$ψ$ suppression in In-In collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon

The NA60 experiment has studied J/$ψ$ production in Indium-Indium collisions at 158 A$\cdot$GeV. In this paper we present an updated set of results obtained with the complete set of available statistics and an improved alignment of the vertex tracker. The centrality dependence of the J/$ψ$ production, obtained with an analysis technique based only on the J/$ψ$ sample, indicates that a suppression beyond that induced by nuclear absorption is present in In-In collisions, setting in at $\sim$80 participant nucleons. A first study of the systematic errors related with this measurement is discussed. We also present preliminary results on the J/$ψ$ azimuthal distributions.

Low Mass Dimuon Production in Indium-Indium Collisions at the CERN SPS

NA60 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS which measured dimuon production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. In this paper we report on a precision measurement of low-mass muon pairs in 158 AGeV indium-indium collisions. A significant excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson decays. The excess can be isolated by subtraction of expected sources, thanks to the excellent mass resolution and large sample size.

Heavy Quarkonium Physics

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Study of dimuon production in Indium-Indium collisions with the NA60 experiment

The NA60 experiment at the CERN-SPS is devoted to the study of dimuon production in heavy-ion and proton-nucleus collisions. We present preliminary results from the analysis of Indium-Indium collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. The topics covered are low mass vector meson production, J/psi production and suppression, and the feasibility of the open charm measurement from the dimuon continuum in the mass range below the J/psi peak.
