Measurement of the Parity-Odd Angular Distribution of Gamma Rays From Polarized Neutron Capture on $^{35}$Cl

We report a measurement of two energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions from polarized slow neutron capture on the ${}^{35}$Cl nucleus, one parity-odd correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{\gamma}}$ and one parity-even correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{n}} \times \vec{k_{\gamma}}$. A parity violating asymmetry can appear in this reaction due to the weak nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction which mixes opposite parity S and P-wave levels in the excited compound $^{36}$Cl nucleus formed upon slow neutron capture. If parity-violating (PV) and parity-conserving (PC) terms both exist, the measured differential cross section can be related to them via $\frac{d\sigma}{d\Omega}\propto1+A_{\gamma, PV}\cos\theta+A_{\gamma,PC}\sin\theta$. The PV and PC asymmetries for energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions for polarized slow neutron capture on $^{35}$Cl averaged over the neutron energies from 2.27~meV to 9.53~meV were measured to be $A_{\gamma,PV}=(-23.9\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{\gamma,PC}=(0.1\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$. These results are consistent with previous experimental results. Systematic errors were quantified and shown to be small compared to the statistical error. These asymmetries in the angular distributions of the gamma rays emitted from the capture of polarized neutrons in $^{35}$Cl were used to verify the operation and data analysis procedures for the NPDGamma experiment which measured the parity-odd asymmetry in the angular distribution of gammas from polarized slow neutron capture on protons.

ALMA and NACO observations towards the young exoring transit system J1407 (V1400 Cen)

Our aim was to directly detect the thermal emission of the putative exoring system responsible for the complex deep transits observed in the light curve for the young Sco-Cen star 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6 (V1400 Cen, hereafter J1407), confirming it as the occulter seen in May 2007, and to determine its orbital parameters with respect to the star. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to observe the field centred on J1407 in the 340 GHz (Band 7) continuum in order to determine the flux and astrometric location of the ring system relative to the star. We used the VLT/NACO camera to observe the J1407 system in March 2019 and to search for the central planetary mass object at thermal infrared wavelengths. We detect no point source at the expected location of J1407, and derive an upper limit $3\sigma$ level of $57.6~\mu\rm{Jy}$. There is a point source detected at an angular separation consistent with the expected location for a free-floating ring system that occulted J1407 in May 2007, with a flux of $89~\mu\rm{Jy}$ consistent with optically thin dust surrounding a massive substellar companion. At 3.8 microns with the NACO camera, we detect the star J1407 but no other additional point sources within 1.3 arcseconds of the star, with a lower bound on the sensitivity of $6M_{Jup}$ at the location of the ALMA source, and down to $4M_{Jup}$ in the sky background limit. The ALMA upper limit at the location of J1407 implies that a hypothesised bound ring system is composed of dust smaller than $1\rm{~mm}$ in size, implying a young ring structure. The detected ALMA source has multiple interpretations, including: (i) it is an unbound substellar object surrounded by warm dust in Sco-Cen with an upper mass limit of $6M_{Jup}$, or (ii) it is a background galaxy.

First Observation of $P$-odd $\gamma$ Asymmetry in Polarized Neutron Capture on Hydrogen

We report the first observation of the parity-violating 2.2 MeV gamma-ray asymmetry $A^{np}_\gamma$ in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. $A^{np}_\gamma$ isolates the $\Delta I=1$, \mbox{$^{3}S_{1}\rightarrow {^{3}P_{1}}$} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless EFT. We measured $A^{np}_\gamma = [-3.0 \pm 1.4 (stat) \pm 0.2 (sys)]\times 10^{-8}$, which implies a DDH weak $\pi NN$ coupling of $h_{\pi}^{1} = [2.6 \pm 1.2(stat) \pm 0.2(sys)] \times 10^{-7}$ and a pionless EFT constant of $C^{^{3}S_{1}\rightarrow ^{3}P_{1}}/C_{0}=[-7.4 \pm 3.5 (stat) \pm 0.5 (sys)] \times 10^{-11}$ MeV$^{-1}$. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and the implications of the result.

Algorithms for Generating Convex Sets in Acyclic Digraphs

A set $X$ of vertices of an acyclic digraph $D$ is convex if $X\neq \emptyset$ and there is no directed path between vertices of $X$ which contains a vertex not in $X$. A set $X$ is connected if $X\neq \emptyset$ and the underlying undirected graph of the subgraph of $D$ induced by $X$ is connected. Connected convex sets and convex sets of acyclic digraphs are of interest in the area of modern embedded processor technology. We construct an algorithm $\cal A$ for enumeration of all connected convex sets of an acyclic digraph $D$ of order $n$. The time complexity of $\cal A$ is $O(n\cdot cc(D))$, where $cc(D)$ is the number of connected convex sets in $D$. We also give an optimal algorithm for enumeration of all (not just connected) convex sets of an acyclic digraph $D$ of order $n$. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our algorithms outperform the best algorithms in the literature. Using the same approach as for $\cal A$, we design an algorithm for generating all connected sets of a connected undirected graph $G$. The complexity of the algorithm is $O(n\cdot c(G)),$ where $n$ is the order of $G$ and $c(G)$ is the number of connected sets of $G.$ The previously reported algorithm for connected set enumeration is of running time $O(mn\cdot c(G))$, where $m$ is the number of edges in $G.$

A search for J^{PC}=1^{-+} exotic mesons in the pi- pi- pi+ and pi- pi0 pi0 systems

A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the pi-pi-pi+ and pi-pi0pi0 systems produced in the reaction pi- p -> (3pi)-p at 18 GeV/c was carried out using an isobar model assumption. This analysis is based on 3.0M pi-pi0pi0 events and 2.6M pi-pi-pi+ events and shows production of the a2(1320), pi2(1670) and π(1800) mesons. An earlier analysis of 250K pi-pi-pi+ events from the same experiment showed possible evidence for a J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic meson with a mass of 1.6 GeV/c^2 decaying into rho pi. In this analysis of a higher statistics sample of the (3pi)- system in two charged modes we find no evidence of an exotic meson.

A Study of the ηπ^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson

A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the $ηπ^0$ system (where $η\to γγ$) produced in the charge exchange reaction $π^-p\to ηπ^0n$ at an incident momentum of 18 GeV$/c$ is presented as a function of ${ηπ^0}$ invariant mass, $m_{ηπ^0}$, and momentum transfer squared, $t_{π^{-}\toηπ}$, from the incident $π^-$ to the outgoing ${ηπ^0}$ system. $S$, $P$ and $D$ waves were included in the PWA. The $a_0(980)$ and $a_2(1320)$ states are clearly observed in the overall ${ηπ^0}$ effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with $S$ wave and $D$ waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in $t_{π^{-}\toηπ}$ for individual $D$ waves associated with natural and unnatural parity exchange in the $t$-channel are consistent with Regge phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the $P$ wave since this leads to an exotic $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ for the $ηπ$ system. A $P$ wave is present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the amplitude and phase motion with respect to the $D$ wave as a Breit-Wigner resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a reported exotic $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ meson decaying into $ηπ^0$ with a mass near 1.4 GeV$/c^2$.

Search for Exotic Mesons in pi- P Interactions at 18 GeV/c

The recent search for non $q \bar{q}$ mesons in $π^{-}p$ interactions at Brookhaven National Laboratory is summarized. Many final states such as $ηπ$, $η' π^{-}$, $a_{0} π$, $f_{1} π$, $a_{2} π$, $b_{1} π$, which are favored decay modes of exotics, are under investigation.
