Spin entanglement in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the spin entanglement in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic atomic interactions using the Hartree-Fock approach. Based on the isomorphism between symmetric $N$-qubit states and spin-$j=N/2$ states, we analyze the negativity of the spin-1 ground state of the condensate viewed as a two spins $1/2$, and explore its dependence with the temperature and external Zeeman fields. The scope of this type of entanglement is highlighted and contrasted with other types of entanglement, as the mode and particle entanglement. It is shown that, at finite temperatures, there is a strong dependence of the negativity with respect to the strengths of quadratic Zeeman fields and the spin-spin interactions of the condensate. Interestingly, in the antiferromagnetic ground-state phase, the negativity and the linear Zeeman field are connected quadratically through the equation of a simple circle, in which its radius depends on the temperature. On the other hand, for the polar phase, being the phase that exhibits the highest degree of entanglement, we were able to identify a clear dependency on the spin-spin interactions and the Zeeman fields that can be expressed analytically in a closed form as a function of the temperature. This results might be relevant for applications in quantum information and metrology.

Speed excess and total acceleration: a kinematical approach to entanglement

We show that the concept of total variance of a spin state, defined as the average of the variances of spin projection measurements along three orthogonal axes, also gives the rotational speed of the state in projective space, averaged over all rotation axes. We compute the addition law, under system composition, for this quantity and find that, in the case of separable states, it is of simple pythagorean form. In the presence of entanglement, we find that the composite state "rotates faster than its parts", thus unveiling a kinematical origin for the correlation of total variance with entanglement. We analyze a similar definition for the acceleration of a state under rotations, for both pure and mixed states, and probe numerically its relation with a wide array of entanglement related measures.

A numerical study of the Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well trap using finite differences

Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential contain the essential ingredients to study many-body systems within a rich classical phase-space that includes an unstable point and a separatrix. Employing a selfconsistent finite difference method, we study some of their quantum properties and their dependency on the strength of the boson-boson interaction. We observe a deviation in the critical parameters associated with a behavior change in both the energy distribution and the eigenstates of the system. We also examine the trends of the nonclassicality via the Wigner function, the tunneling transmission coefficient, and the nonorthogonality of eigenstates associated with the nonlinearity aspects of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Maximum entanglement of mixed symmetric states under unitary transformations

We study the maximum entanglement that can be produced by a global unitary transformation for systems of two and three qubits constrained to the fully symmetric states. This restriction to the symmetric subspace appears naturally in the context of bosonic or collective spin systems. We also study the symmetric states that remain separable after any global unitary transformation, called symmetric absolutely separable states (SAS), or absolutely classical for spin states. The results for the two-qubit system are deduced analytically. In particular, we determine the maximal radius of a ball of SAS states around the maximally mixed state in the symmetric sector, and the minimal radius of a ball that contains the set of SAS states. As an application of our results, we also analyse the temperature dependence of the maximum entanglement that can be obtained from the thermal state of a spin-1 system with a spin-squeezing Hamiltonian. For the symmetric three-qubit case, our results are mostly numerical, and we conjecture a 3-parameter family of states that achieves the maximum negativity in the unitary orbit of any mixed state. In addition, we derive upper bounds, apparently tight, on the radii of balls containing only/all SAS states.

Phase characterization of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates: a Majorana stellar representation approach

We study the variational perturbations for the mean-field solution of an interacting spinor system with underlying rotational symmetries. An approach based upon the Majorana stellar representation for mixed states and group theory is introduced to this end. The method reduces significantly the unknown degrees of freedom of the perturbation, allowing us a simplified and direct exploration on emergent physical phenomena. We apply it to characterize the phases of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate and to study the behavior of these phases with entropy. The spin-2 phase diagram was also investigated within the Hartree-Fock approximation, where a non-linear deviation of the cyclic-nematic phase boundary with temperature is predicted.

Thermal effects on the spin domain phases of high spin-f Bose-Einstein condensates with rotational symmetries

Spinor Bose Einstein condensates (BEC) can be realized nowadays using different atomic species of several spin values, offering unprecedented opportunities to scrutinize the underlying physics of its spin phase domains and of its quantum phase transitions. At sufficient low temperatures, lower than the critical temperature, a fraction of thermally excited atoms of the condensate can still interact with the whole system leading to spin-dependent interactions that can modify the nature of its phase domains. In this work, we characterize the thermal fraction of atoms of a spinorial BEC of general spin-$f$ value, provided that its ground state lies in a given spin phase with rotational symmetry. To that end, we use the Hartree-Fock approximation and a method based on the Majorana stellar representation for mixed quantum states and symmetry arguments. We consider the spin phases with usual point group symmetries, including those with some exotic phases associated to the platonic solids. The method leads to useful analytical expressions of the eigenspectrum of the thermal cloud allowing us to study the admissible regions and multipolar magnetic moments of the spin phases as a function of the temperature for general spin values.

Curves in quantum state space, geometric phases, and the brachistophase

Given a curve in quantum spin state space, we inquire what is the relation between its geometry and the geometric phase accumulated along it. Motivated by Mukunda and Simon's result that geodesics (in the standard Fubini-Study metric) do not accumulate geometric phase, we find a general expression for the derivatives (of various orders) of the geometric phase in terms of the covariant derivatives of the curve. As an application of our results, we put forward the brachistophase problem: given a quantum state, find the (appropriately normalized) hamiltonian that maximizes the accumulated geometric phase after time $τ$ - we find an analytical solution for all spin values, valid for small $τ$. For example, the optimal evolution of a spin coherent state consists of a single Majorana star separating from the rest and tracing out a circle on the Majorana sphere.

Toponomic Quantum Computation

Holonomic quantum computation makes use of non-abelian geometric phases, associated to the evolution of a subspace of quantum states, to encode logical gates. We identify a special class of subspaces, for which a sequence of rotations results in a non-abelian holonomy of a topological nature, so that it is invariant under any $SO(3)$-perturbation. Making use of a Majorana-like stellar representation for subspaces, we give explicit examples of topological-holonomic (or toponomic) NOT and CNOT gates.

Metastable spin-phase diagrams in antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates under external magnetic fields exhibit well-characterized spin domains of its ground state due to spin-dependent interactions. At low temperatures, collision-induced spin-mixing instabilities may promote the condensate to dwell into metastable states occurring near the phase boundaries. In this work, we study theoretically the metastable spin-phase diagram of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate at zero and finite temperatures. The approach makes use of Hartree-Fock theory and exploits the symmetry of the Hamiltonian and of the order parameters yielding a closed system of transcendental equations for the free energy, fully avoiding the use of selfconsistency. Our results are consistent with recent experiments and allow us to explain qualitatively the different types of observed quench dynamics. In addition, we found that similar phenomena should occur in antiferromagnetic spinor condensates with a sudden change in the temperature. It is shown also that the increase of temperature induces a traceable shift of the Ferromagnetic-Polar transition boundary, behavior previously not noticed by selfconsistent mean-field calculations.

Majorana representation for mixed states

We generalize the Majorana stellar representation of spin-$s$ pure states to mixed states, and in general to any hermitian operator, defining a bijective correspondence between three spaces: the spin density-matrices, a projective space of homogeneous polynomials of four variables, and a set of equivalence classes of points (constellations) on spheres of different radii. The representation behaves well under rotations by construction, and also under partial traces where the reduced density matrices inherit their constellation classes from the original state $ρ$. We express several concepts and operations related to density matrices in terms of the corresponding polynomials, such as the anticoherence criterion and the tensor representation of spin-$s$ states described in [1].

Stellar Representation of Grassmannians

Pure quantum spin-$s$ states can be represented by $2s$ points on the sphere, as shown by Majorana in 1932 --- the description has proven particularly useful in the study of rotational symmetries of the states, and a host of other properties, as the points rotate rigidly on the sphere when the state undergoes an $SU(2)$ transformation in Hilbert space. At the same time, the Wilzcek-Zee effect, which involves the cyclic evolution of a degenerate $k$-dimensional linear subspace of the Hilbert space, and the associated holonomy dictated by Schroedinger's equation, have been proposed as a fault-tolerant mechanism for the implementation of logical gates, with applications in quantum computing. We show, in this paper, how to characterize such subspaces by Majorana-like sets of points on the sphere, that also rotate rigidly under $SU(2)$ transformations --- the construction is actually valid for arbitrary totally antisymmetric $k$-partite qudit states.
