A New Class of Ghost and Tachyon Free Metric Affine Gravities

We construct the spin-projection operators for a theory containing a symmetric two-index tensor and a general three-index tensor. We then use them to analyse, at linearized level, the most general action for a metric-affine theory of gravity with terms up to second order in curvature, which depends on 28 parameters. In the metric case we recover known results. In the torsion-free case, we are able to determine the most general class of theories that are projective invariant, contain only one massless spin 2 and no spin 3, and are free of ghosts and tachyons.

FRW and domain walls in higher spin gravity

We present exact solutions to Vasiliev's bosonic higher spin gravity equations in four dimensions with positive and negative cosmological constant that admit an interpretation in terms of domain walls, quasi-instantons and Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) backgrounds. Their isometry algebras are infinite dimensional higher-spin extensions of spacetime isometries generated by six Killing vectors. The solutions presented are obtained by using a method of holomorphic factorization in noncommutative twistor space and gauge functions. In interpreting the solutions in terms of Fronsdal-type fields in spacetime, a field-dependent higher spin transformation is required, which is implemented at leading order. To this order, the scalar field solves Klein-Gordon equation with conformal mass in (anti) de Sitter space. We interpret the FRW solution with de Sitter asymptotics in the context of inflationary cosmology and we expect that the domain wall and FRW solutions are associated with spontaneously broken scaling symmetries in their holographic description. We observe that the factorization method provides a convenient framework for setting up a perturbation theory around the exact solutions, and we propose that the nonlinear completion of particle excitations over FRW and domain wall solutions requires black hole-like states.

Membrane Duality Revisited

Just as string T-duality originates from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the string worldsheet, so it has been suggested that M-theory U-dualities originate from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the membrane worldvolume. However, this encounters a problem unless the target space has dimension $D = p + 1$. We identify the problem to be the nonintegrability of the U-duality transformation assigned to the pull-back map. Just as a double geometry renders manifest the $O(D,D)$ string T-duality, here we show in the case of the M2-brane in $D = 3$ that a generalised geometry renders manifest the $SL(3) \times SL(2)$ U-duality. In the case of M2-brane in $D=4$, with and without extra target space coordinates, we show that only the ${\rm GL}(4,R)\ltimes R^4$ subgroup of the expected $SL(5,R)$ U-duality symmetry is realised.

Correlation Functions in $ω$-Deformed N=6 Supergravity

Gauged N=8 supergravity in four dimensions is now known to admit a deformation characterized by a real parameter $ω$ lying in the interval $0\leω\le π/8$. We analyse the fluctuations about its anti-de Sitter vacuum, and show that the full N=8 supersymmetry can be maintained by the boundary conditions only for $ω=0$. For non-vanishing $ω$, and requiring that there be no propagating spin s>1 fields on the boundary, we show that N=3 is the maximum degree of supersymmetry that can be preserved by the boundary conditions. We then construct in detail the consistent truncation of the N=8 theory to give $ω$-deformed SO(6) gauged N=6 supergravity, again with $ω$ in the range $0\leω\le π/8$. We show that this theory admits fully N=6 supersymmetry-preserving boundary conditions not only for $ω=0$, but also for $ω=π/8$. These two theories are related by a U(1) electric-magnetic duality. We observe that the only three-point functions that depend on $ω$ involve the coupling of an SO(6) gauge field with the U(1) gauge field and a scalar or pseudo-scalar field. We compute these correlation functions and compare them with those of the undeformed N=6 theory. We find that the correlation functions in the $ω=π/8$ theory holographically correspond to amplitudes in the U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} ABJM model in which the U(1) Noether current is replaced by a dynamical U(1) gauge field. We also show that the $ω$-deformed N=6 gauged supergravities can be obtained via consistent reductions from the eleven-dimensional or ten-dimensional type IIA supergravities.

Beta Functions of Topologically Massive Supergravity

We compute the one-loop beta functions of the cosmological constant, Newton's constant and the topological mass in topologically massive supergravity in three dimensions. We use a variant of the proper time method supplemented by a simple choice of cutoff function. We find that the dimensionless coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, $ν$, has vanishing beta function. The flow of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant depends on $ν$; we study analytically the structure of the flow and its fixed points in the limits of small and large $ν$.

Spectrum of Higher Derivative 6D Chiral Supergravity

Gauged off-shell Maxwell-Einstein supergravity in six dimensions with N=(1,0) supersymmetry has a higher derivative extension afforded by a supersymmetrized Riemann squared term. This theory admits a supersymmetric Minkowski x S^2 compactification with a U(1) monopole of unit charge on S^2. We determine the full spectrum of the theory on this background. We also determine the spectrum on a non-supersymmetric version of this compactification in which the monopole charge is different from unity, and we find the peculiar feature that there are massless gravitini in a representation of the S^2 isometry group determined by the monopole charge.

Critical and Non-Critical Einstein-Weyl Supergravity

We construct N=1 supersymmetrisations of some recently-proposed theories of critical gravity, conformal gravity, and extensions of critical gravity in four dimensions. The total action consists of the sum of three separately off-shell supersymmetric actions containing Einstein gravity, a cosmological term and the square of the Weyl tensor. For generic choices of the coefficients for these terms, the excitations of the resulting theory around an AdS_4 background describe massive spin-2 and massless spin-2 modes coming from the metric; massive spin-1 modes coming from a vector field in the theory; and massless and massive spin-3/2 modes (with two unequal masses) coming from the gravitino. These assemble into a massless and a massive N=1 spin-2 multiplet. In critical supergravity, the coefficients are tuned so that the spin-2 mode in the massive multiplet becomes massless. In the supersymmetrised extensions of critical gravity, the coefficients are chosen so that the massive modes lie in a "window" of lowest energies E_0 such that these ghostlike fields can be truncated by imposing appropriate boundary conditions at infinity, thus leaving just positive-norm massless supergravity modes.

The General Supersymmetric Solution of Topologically Massive Supergravity

We find the general fully non-linear solution of topologically massive supergravity admitting a Killing spinor. It is of plane-wave type, with a null Killing vector field. Conversely, we show that all solutions with a null Killing vector are supersymmetric for one or the other choice of sign for the Chern-Simons coupling constant μ. If μdoes not take the critical value μ=\pm 1, these solutions are asymptotically regular on a Poincaré patch, but do not admit a smooth global compactification with boundary S^1\times\R. In the critical case, the solutions have a logarithmic singularity on the boundary of the Poincaré patch. We derive a Nester-Witten identity, which allows us to identify the associated charges, but we conclude that the presence of the Chern-Simons term prevents us from making a statement about their positivity. The Nester-Witten procedure is applied to the BTZ black hole.

On the Magical Supergravities in Six Dimensions

Magical supergravities are a very special class of supergravity theories whose symmetries and matter content in various dimensions correspond to symmetries and underlying algebraic structures of the remarkable geometries of the Magic Square of Freudenthal, Rozenfeld and Tits. These symmetry groups include the exceptional groups and some of their special subgroups. In this paper, we study the general gaugings of these theories in six dimensions which lead to new couplings between vector and tensor fields. We show that in the absence of hypermultiplet couplings the gauge group is uniquely determined by a maximal set of commuting translations within the isometry group SO(n_T,1) of the tensor multiplet sector. Moreover, we find that in general the gauge algebra allows for central charges that may have nontrivial action on the hypermultiplet scalars. We determine the new minimal couplings, Yukawa couplings and the scalar potential.

D=7 / D=6 Heterotic Supergravity with Gauged R-Symmetry

We construct a family of chiral anomaly-free supergravity theories in D=6 starting from D=7 supergravity with a gauged noncompact R-symmetry, employing a Horava-Witten bulk-plus-boundary construction. The gauged noncompact R-symmetry yields a positive (de Sitter sign) D=6 scalar field potential. Classical anomaly inflow which is needed to cancel boundary-field loop anomalies requires careful consideration of the gravitational, gauge, mixed and local supersymmetry anomalies. Coupling of boundary hypermultiplets requires care with the Sp(1) gauge connection required to obtain quaternionic Kahler target manifolds in D=6. This class of gauged R-symmetry models may be of use as starting points for further compactifications to D=4 that take advantage of the positive scalar potential, such as those proposed in the scenario of supersymmetry in large extra dimensions.

Massive Three-Dimensional Supergravity From R+R^2 Action in Six Dimensions

We obtain a three-parameter family of massive N=1 supergravities in three dimensions from the 3-sphere reduction of an off-shell N=(1,0) six-dimensional Poincare supergravity that includes a curvature squared invariant. The three-dimensional theory contains an off-shell supergravity multiplet and an on-shell scalar matter multiplet. We then generalise this in three dimensions to an eight-parameter family of supergravities. We also find a duality relationship between the six-dimensional theory and the N=(1,0) six-dimensional theory obtained through a T^4 reduction of the heterotic string effective action that includes the higher-order terms associated with the supersymmetrisation of the anomaly-cancelling \tr(R\wedge R) term.

Superconformal Sigma Models in Three Dimensions

We construct superconformal gauged sigma models with extended rigid supersymmetry in three dimensions. Those with N>4 have necessarily flat targets, but the models with N \leq 4 admit non-flat targets, which are cones with appropriate Sasakian base manifolds. Superconformal symmetry also requires that the three dimensional spacetimes admit conformal Killing spinors which we examine in detail. We present explicit results for the gauged superconformal theories for N=1,2. In particular, we gauge a suitable subgroup of the isometry group of the cone in a superconformal way. We finally show how these sigma models can be obtained from Poincare supergravity. This connection is shown to necessarily involve a subset of the auxiliary fields of supergravity for N \geq 2.

One Loop Beta Functions in Topologically Massive Gravity

We calculate the running of the three coupling constants in cosmological, topologically massive 3d gravity. We find that ν, the dimensionless coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, has vanishing beta function. The flow of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant depends on ν, and for any positive νthere exist both a trivial and a nontrivial fixed point.

Kac-Moody and Virasoro Symmetries of Principal Chiral Sigma Models

It is commonly asserted that there is a \hat G\times G centreless Kac-Moody extension of the manifest G\times G global symmetry of the two-dimensional principal chiral model (PCM) for the group manifold G. Here, we show that the symmetry is in fact larger, namely \hat G\times \hat G, the full centreless Kac-Moody extension of the entire manifest G\times G global symmetry. Extending previous results in the literature, we also obtain an explicit realisation of the Virasoro-like symmetry of the PCM, generated by K_n=L_{n+1} - L_{n-1} for both positive and negative n. We show that these generators obey Sugarawara-type commutation relations with the two commuting copies of the Kac-Moody algebra \hat G.

The Gaugings of Maximal D=6 Supergravity

We construct the most general gaugings of the maximal D=6 supergravity. The theory is (2,2) supersymmetric, and possesses an on-shell SO(5,5) duality symmetry which plays a key role in determining its couplings. The field content includes 16 vector fields that carry a chiral spinor representation of the duality group. We utilize the embedding tensor method which determines the appropriate combinations of these vectors that participate in gauging of a suitable subgroup of SO(5,5). The construction also introduces the magnetic duals of the 5 two-form potentials and 16 vector fields.

Group Reduction of Heterotic Supergravity

The reduction of ten-dimensional heterotic supergravity with Yang-Mills symmetry group K is performed on an arbitrary n-dimensional group manifold G. The reduction involves a nonvanishing 3-form flux, and the Lie algebra of G must have traceless structure constants to ensure the consistency of the reduction at the level of the action. A large class of gauged supergravities in d=10-n with (non)compact gaugings is obtained. The resulting models describe half-maximal gauged supergravities coupled to $ (n + {\rm dim} K)$ vector multiplets. We uncover their hidden $SO(n,n+{\rm dim} K)$ duality symmetry, and the $SO(n,n+{\rm dim} K) / SO(n)\times SO(n+{\rm dim} K)$ coset structure that governs the couplings of the scalar fields. We find that the local gauge symmetry of the d-dimensional theory is $K\times G \ltimes R^n$. Differences from the existing gauged supergravities are highlighted. The consistent truncation to pure half-maximal gauged supergravity in any dimension is shown, and the obstacle to performing a chiral truncation of the theory in d=6 dimensions is found. Among the results obtained are the complete diagonalisation of the fermionic kinetic terms, and other reduction formulae that are applicable to group reductions of supergravities in arbitrary dimensions.

6D Dyonic String With Active Hyperscalars

We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Killing spinor in N=(1,0) gauge supergravity in six dimensions coupled to a single tensor multiplet, vector multiplets and hypermultiplets. These are shown to imply most of the field equations and the remaining ones are determined. In this framework, we find a novel 1/8 supersymmetric dyonic string solution with nonvanishing hypermultiplet scalars. The activated scalars parametrize a 4 dimensional submanifold of a quaternionic hyperbolic ball. We employ an identity map between this submanifold and the internal space transverse to the string worldsheet. The internal space forms a 4 dimensional analog of the Gell-Mann-Zwiebach tear-drop which is noncompact with finite volume. While the electric charge carried by the dyonic string is arbitrary, the magnetic charge is fixed in Planckian units, and hence necessarily non-vanishing. The source term needed to balance a delta function type singularity at the origin is determined. The solution is also shown to have 1/4 supersymmetric AdS_3 x S^3 near horizon limit where the radii are proportional to the electric charge.

On an Exact Cosmological Solution of Higher Spin Gauge Theory

We review our recent exact solution to four-dimensional higher spin gauge theory invariant under a higher spin extension of SO(3,1) and we comment on its cosmological interpretation. We find an effective Einstein-scalar field theory that admits this solution, and we highlight the significance of the Einstein frame and what we call higher spin frame in the cosmological interpretation of the solution. We also compare the properties of the solution with those based on an Einstein-scalar system that arises in a consistent truncation of gauged N=8,D=4 supergravity.
