Revisiting Gaussian genuine entanglement witnesses with modern software

Continuous-variable Gaussian entanglement is an attractive notion, both as a fundamental concept in quantum information theory, based on the well-established Gaussian formalism for phase-space variables, and as a practical resource in quantum technology, exploiting in particular, unconditional room-temperature squeezed-light quantum optics. The readily available high level of scalability, however, is accompanied by an increased theoretical complexity when the multipartite entanglement of a growing number of optical modes is considered. For such systems, we present several approaches to reconstruct the most probable physical covariance matrix from a measured non-physical one and then test the reconstructed matrix for different kinds of separability (factorizability, concrete partite separability or biseparability) even in the presence of measurement errors. All these approaches are based on formulating the desired properties (physicality or separability) as convex optimization problems, which can be efficiently solved with modern optimization solvers, even when the system grows. To every optimization problem we construct the corresponding dual problem used to verify the optimality of the solution. Besides this numerical part of work, we derive an explicit analytical expression for the symplectic trace of a positive definite matrix, which can serve as a simple witness of an entanglement witness, and extend it for positive semidefinite matrices. In addition, we show that in some cases our optimization problems can be solved analytically. As an application of our analytical approach, we consider small instances of bound entangled or genuine multipartite entangled Gaussian states, including some examples from the literature that were treated only numerically, and a family of non-Gaussian states.

On the waiting time in quantum repeaters with probabilistic entanglement swapping

The standard approach to realize a quantum repeater relies upon probabilistic but heralded entangled state manipulations and the storage of quantum states while waiting for successful events. In the literature on this class of repeaters, calculating repeater rates has typically depended on approximations assuming sufficiently small probabilities. Here we propose an exact and systematic approach including an algorithm based on Markov chain theory to compute the average waiting time (and hence the transmission rates) of quantum repeaters with arbitrary numbers of links. For up to four repeater segments, we explicitly give the exact rate formulae for arbitrary entanglement swapping probabilities. Starting with three segments, we explore schemes with arbitrary (not only doubling) and dynamical (not only predetermined) connections. The effect of finite memory times is also considered and the relative influence of the classical communication (of heralded signals) is shown to grow significantly for larger probabilities. Conversely, we demonstrate that for small swapping probabilities the statistical behavior of the waiting time in a quantum repeater cannot be characterized by its average value alone and additional statistical quantifiers are needed. For large repeater systems, we propose a recursive approach based on exactly but still efficiently computable waiting times of sufficiently small sub-repeaters. This approach leads to better lower bounds on repeater rates compared to existing schemes.

Recovering quantum properties of continuous-variable states in the presence of measurement errors

We present two results which combined enable one to reliably detect multimode, multipartite entanglement in the presence of measurement errors. The first result leads to a method to compute the best (approximated) physical covariance matrix given a measured non-physical one. The other result states that a widely used entanglement condition is a consequence of negativity of partial transposition. Our approach can quickly verify entanglement of experimentally obtained multipartite states, which is demonstrated on several realistic examples. Compared to existing detection schemes, ours is very simple and efficient. In particular, it does not require any complicated optimizations.

Higher-order EPR correlations and inseparability conditions for continuous variables

We derive two types of sets of higher-order conditions for bipartite entanglement in terms of continuous variables. One corresponds to an extension of the well-known Duan inequalities from second to higher moments describing a kind of higher-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations. Only the second type, however, expressed by powers of the mode operators leads to tight conditions with a hierarchical structure. We start with a minimization problem for the single-partite case and, using the results obtained, establish relevant inequalities for higher-order moments satisfied by all bipartite separable states. A certain fourth-order condition cannot be violated by any Gaussian state and we present non-Gaussian states whose entanglement is detected by that condition. Violations of all our conditions are provided, so they can all be used as entanglement tests.

Generalized conditions for genuine multipartite continuous-variable entanglement

We derive a hierarchy of continuous-variable multipartite entanglement conditions in terms of second-order moments of position and momentum operators that generalizes existing criteria. Each condition corresponds to a convex optimization problem which, given the covariance matrix of the state, can be numerically solved in a straightforward way. The conditions are independent of partial transposition and thus are also able to detect bound entangled states. Our approach can be used to obtain an analytical condition for genuine multipartite entanglement. We demonstrate that even a special case of our conditions can detect entanglement very efficiently. Using multi-objective optimization it is also possible to numerically verify genuine entanglement of some experimentally realizable states.

Tripartite separability conditions exponentially violated by Gaussian states

Starting with a set of conditions for bipartite separability of arbitrary quantum states in any dimension and expressed in terms of arbitrary operators whose commutator is a $c$-number, we derive a hierarchy of conditions for tripartite separability of continuous-variable three-mode quantum states. These conditions have the form of inequalities for higher-order moments of linear combinations of the mode operators. They enable one to distinguish between all possible kinds of tripartite separability, while the strongest violation of these inequalities is a sufficient condition for genuine tripartite entanglement. We construct Gaussian states for which the violation of our conditions grows exponentially with the order of the moments of the mode operators. By going beyond second moments, our conditions are expected to be useful as well for the detection of tripartite entanglement of non-Gaussian states.

Multipartite minimum uncertainty products

In our previous work we have found a lower bound for the multipartite uncertainty product of the position and momentum observables over all separable states. In this work we are trying to minimize this uncertainty product over a broader class of states to find the fundamental limits imposed by nature on the observable quantites. We show that it is necessary to consider pure states only and find the infimum of the uncertainty product over a special class of pure states (states with spherically symmetric wave functions). It is shown that this infimum is not attained. We also explicitly construct a parametrized family of states that approaches the infimum by varying the parameter. Since the constructed states beat the lower bound for separable states, they are entangled. We thus show that there is a gap that separates the values of a simple measurable quantity for separable states from entangled ones and we also try to find the size of this gap.

Entanglement conditions and polynomial identities

We develop a rather general approach to entanglement characterization based on convexity properties and polynomial identities. This approach is applied to obtain simple and efficient entanglement conditions which work equally well in both discrete as well as continuous-variable environments. Examples of violations of our conditions are presented.

Quaternions, octonions and Bell-type inequalities

Multipartite Bell-type inequalities are derived for general systems. They involve up to eight observables with arbitrary spectra on each site. These inequalities are closely related to the algebras of quaternions and octonions.

Generalized minimum-uncertainty squeezed states

Minimum-uncertainty squeezed states, related to a broad class of observables, are analyzed. Methods for characterizing such states are developed, which are based on numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations. As typical examples we deal with nonlinear generalizations of quadrature squeezed states and deformed nonlinear squeezed states. In this manner one may derive those squeezed states which are directly related to given observables. This can be useful for optimized measurements at a reduced level of quantum-noise.

Bell inequalities, classical cryptography and fractals

The relation between the boolean functions and Bell inequalities for qubits is analyzed. The connection between the maximal quantum violation of a Bell inequality and the nonlinearity of the corresponding boolean function is discussed. A visualization scheme of boolean functions is proposed. An attempt to classify Bell inequalities for qubits is made, a weaker result (classification with respect to Jevons group) is obtained. The fractal structure of the classification is shown. All constructs are illustrated by Mathematica code.

Multipartite continuous-variable entanglement

Necessary and sufficient observable conditions for the nonnegativity of all partial transpositions of multi-mode quantum states are derived. The result is a hierarchy of inequalities for minors in terms of moments of the given state. Violations of any inequality is a sufficient condition for entanglement. Full entanglement can be certified for a manifold of multi-mode quantum states. A \textit{Mathematica} package is given for a systematic test of the hierarchy of conditions.

Universal measurement of quantum correlations of radiation

A measurement technique is proposed which, in principle, allows one to observe the general space-time correlation properties of a quantized radiation field. Our method, called balanced homodyne correlation measurement, unifies the advantages of balanced homodyne detection with those of homodyne correlation measurements.

Inseparability criteria for bipartite quantum states

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the partial transposition of bipartite harmonic quantum states to be nonnegative. The conditions are formulated as an infinite series of inequalities for the moments of the state under study. The violation of any inequality of this series is a sufficient condition for entanglement. Previously known entanglement conditions are shown to be special cases of our approach.
