Flux flow and orbital upper critical field in multiband FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ explored by microwave magnetotransport

We measure the flux flow resistivity in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ epitaxial films using a microwave dual-frequency technique (16 GHz and 27 GHz), in the range 5 K-$T_c$, in static magnetic fields up to 1.2 T. By applying a temperature scaling procedure, we extract from flux flow measurements the temperature dependence of the orbital upper critical field, that shows features of multiband superconductors. The reduced orbital upper critical field is then fitted with a two-band model with strong intraband and weak interband coupling, as expected in 11 Fe-based systems. We derive the vortex viscosity and we estimate the bands-averaged vortex core quasiparticle reduced scattering time within the Bardeen-Stephen framework. Our data suggest that, for our epitaxial FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ films, the quasiparticle scattering rate values are at the upper edge for the dirty regime. Finally, tentative numerical values of the orbital upper critical field and coherence length are provided.

Upper critical magnetic field and multiband superconductivity in artificial high-Tc superlattices of nano quantum wells

Artificial high-Tc superlattices (AHTS) composed of quantum building blocks with tunable superconducting critical temperature have been synthesized by engineering their nanoscale geometry using the Bianconi-Perali-Valletta (BPV) two gaps superconductivity theory. These quantum heterostructures consist of quantum wells made of superconducting, modulation-doped Mott insulators (S), confined by a metallic (N) potential barrier. The lattice geometry has been carefully engineered to induce the predicted Fano-Feshbach shape resonance between the gaps, near a topological Lifshitz transition. Here, we validate the BPV theory by providing compelling experimental evidence that AHTS samples, at the peak of the superconducting dome, exhibit resonant two-band, two-gap superconductivity. This is demonstrated by measuring the temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field,Bc2, in samples with superlattice periods 3.3<d<5.28 nm and L/d ratios close to the magic value 2/3 (where L is the thickness of the superconducting La2CuO4 layer and d is the superlattice period). The data reveal the predicted upward concavity in Hc2(T) and a characteristic kink in the coherence length as a function of temperature, confirming the predicted two-band superconductivity with Fermi velocity ratio 0.25 and significant pair exchange term among the two condensates.

Characterization of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) for the CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) mission

The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) project is a CubeSat mission orbiting the Earth aimed to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP will allow the study of the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures of our star. CUSP is a project in the framework of the Alcor Program of the Italian Space Agency aimed at developing new CubeSat missions. It is approved for a Phase B study. In this work, we report on the characterization of the Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) that will be used as readout sensors of the absorption stage of the Compton polarimeter. We assessed the APDs gain and energy resolution as a function of temperature by irradiating the sensor with a \textsuperscript{55}Fe radioactive source. Moreover, the APDs were also characterized as being coupled to a GAGG scintillator.

Galactic axions search with a superconducting resonant cavity

To account for the dark matter content in our Universe, post-inflationary scenarios predict for the QCD axion a mass in the range $(10-10^3)\,μ\mbox{eV}$. Searches with haloscope experiments in this mass range require the monitoring of resonant cavity modes with frequency above 5\,GHz, where several experimental limitations occur due to linear amplifiers, small volumes, and low quality factors of Cu resonant cavities. In this paper we deal with the last issue, presenting the result of a search for galactic axions using a haloscope based on a $36\,\mbox{cm}^3$ NbTi superconducting cavity. The cavity worked at $T=4\,\mbox{K}$ in a 2\,T magnetic field and exhibited a quality factor $Q_0= 4.5\times10^5$ for the TM010 mode at 9\,GHz. With such values of $Q$ the axion signal is significantly increased with respect to copper cavity haloscopes. Operating this setup we set the limit $g_{aγγ}<1.03\times10^{-12}\,\mbox{GeV}^{-1}$ on the axion photon coupling for a mass of about 37\,$μ$eV. A comprehensive study of the NbTi cavity at different magnetic fields, temperatures, and frequencies is also presented.

First Results on 3D Pixel Sensors Interconnected to the RD53A Readout Chip after Irradiation to $1\times$$10^{16}$neq cm$^{-2}$

Results obtained with 3D columnar pixel sensors bump-bonded to the RD53A prototype readout chip are reported. The interconnected modules have been tested in a hadron beam before and after irradiation to a fluence of about $1\times$$10^{16}$neq cm$^{-2}$ (1MeV equivalent neutrons). All presented results are part of the CMS R&D activities in view of the pixel detector upgrade for the High Luminosity phase of the LHC at CERN (HL-LHC). A preliminary analysis of the collected data shows hit detection efficiencies around 97% measured after proton irradiation.

Robustness of the $0 -π$ transition against compositional and structural ageing in S/F/S heterostructures

We have studied the temperature induced $0 -π$ thermodynamic transition in Nb/PdNi/Nb Superconductor/Ferromagnetic/Superconductor (SFS) heterostructures by microwave measurements of the superfluid density. We have observed a shift in the transition temperature with the ageing of the heterostructures, suggesting that structural and/or chemical changes took place. Motivated by the electrodynamics findings, we have extensively studied the local structural properties of the samples by means of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) technique, and the compositional profile by Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). We found that the samples have indeed changed their properties, in particular for what concerns the interfaces and the composition of the ferromagnetic alloy layer. The structural and compositional data are consistent with the shift of the $0-π$ transition toward the behaviour of heterostructures with different F layers. An important emerging indication to the physics of SFS is the weak relevance of the ideality of the interfaces: even in aged samples, with less-than-ideal interfaces, the temperature-induced $0-π$ transition is still detectable albeit at a different critical F thickness.

Thermodynamic nature of the 0-PI quantum transition in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor trilayers

In structures made up of alternating superconducting and ferromagnet layers (S/F/S heterostructures), it is known that the macroscopic quantum wavefunction of the ground state changes its phase difference across the F--layer from 0 to PI under certain temperature and geometrical conditions, whence the name "0-PI" for this crossover. We present here a joint experimental and theoretical demonstration that the "0-PI" is a true thermodynamic phase transition: microwave measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in Nb/Pd_0.84Ni_0.16/Nb trilayers reveal a sudden, unusual decrease of the density of the superconducting condensate (square modulus of the macroscopic quantum wavefunction) with decreasing temperature, which is predicted by the theory here developed as a transition from the 0- to the PI-state. Our result for the jump of the amplitude of the order parameter is the first thermodynamic manifestation of such temperature-driven quantum transition.

Directional pinning and anisotropy in YBa2Cu3O7-x with BaZrO3 nanorods: intrinsic and nanorods-induced anisotropy

We present a study of the anisotropic vortex parameters as obtained from measurements of the microwave complex resistivity in the vortex state with a tilted applied magnetic field in YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films with BaZrO3 nanorods. We present the angular dependence of the vortex viscosity $η$, the pinning constant k_p and the upper limit for the creep factor χ_M. We show that the directional effect of the nanorods is absent in η, which is dictated by the mass anisotropy γ. By contrast, pinning-mediated properties are strongly affected by the nanorods. It is significant that the pinning and creep affected by the nanorods is detectable also at our very high operating frequency, which implies very short-range displacements of the vortices from their equilibrium position.

Anisotropy and directional pinning in YBaCuO with BaZrO3 nanorods

Measurements of anisotropic transport properties (dc and high-frequency regime) of driven vortex matter in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ with elongated strong-pinning sites (c-axis aligned, self-assembled BaZrO$_3$ nanorods) are used to demonstrate that the effective-mass angular scaling takes place only in intrinsic physical quantities (flux-flow resistivity), and not in pinning-related Labusch parameter and critical currents. Comparison of the dynamics at different time scales shows evidence for a transition of the vortex matter toward a Mott phase, driven by the presence of nanorods. The strong pinning in dc arises partially from a dynamic effect.

Superconducting and structural properties of Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers

The superconducting and structural properties of S/F/S (Superconductor/Ferromagnet/Superconductor) heterostructures have been studied by means of microwave measurements (1-20 GHz) and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers have been studied as a function of F layer thicness. With respect to pure Nb, XAFS analysis shows that the heterostructures exhibit larger structural disorder in the S layers. Microwave measurements show evidence for a progressively weaker vortex pinning with increasing F thickness. However, no clear correlation is found with the local disorder in Nb: the weakest pinning is not in the most disordered trilayer. Therefore the structural disorder in the superconducting material cannot explain on its own the changes in vortex pinning. We argue that the F layer acts on the superconducting state itself. We propose possible explanations for the observed behavior.

Directional vortex pinning at microwave frequency in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin films with BaZrO$_3$ nanorods

We investigate the effect of the anisotropy and of the directional pinning in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ films grown by pulsed laser ablation from targets containing BaZrO$_3$ at 5% mol. BaZrO$_3$ inclusions self-assemble to give nanorods oriented along the c-axis, thus giving a preferential direction for vortex pinning. The directionality of vortex response is studied at high ac frequency with the complex microwave response at 48 GHz, as a function of the applied field and of the angle $θ$ between the field and the c-axis. The complex microwave response does not exhibit any angular scaling, suggesting that the structural anisotropy of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ is supplemented by at least another preferred orientation. The pinning parameter $r$ shows evidence of directional pinning, effective in a wide range of angles around the c-axis (thus ascribed to BZO nanocolumns).

Microwave properties of Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers. Observation of flux flow in excess of Bardeen-Stephen theory

We combine wideband (1-20 GHz) Corbino disk and dielectric resonator (8.2 GHz) techniques to study the microwave properties in Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers, grown by UHV dc magnetron sputtering, composed by Nb layers of nominal thickness $d_S$=15 nm, and a ferromagnetic PdNi layer of thickness $d_F$= 1, 2, 8 and 9 nm. We focus on the vortex state. Magnetic fields up to $H_{c2}$ were applied. The microwave resistivity at fixed $H/H_{c2}$ increases with $d_F$, eventually exceeding the Bardeen Stephen flux flow value.

Angular dependence of the high-frequency vortex response in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin film with self-assembled BaZrO$_3$ nanorods

We present a microwave study of the angular dependence of the flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{ff}$ and of the pinning constant $k_p$ in YBCO thin films containing BZO nanorods. We find that BZO nanorods are very efficient pinning centers, even in tilted fields. We find that $ρ_{ff}$ is a scaling function of a reduced field $H/f(θ)$. We extend a model for the anisotropic motion of vortices in uniaxially anisotropic superconductor, able to describe the experimental $f(θ)$ on the basis of only the intrinsic anisotropy of YBCO. The pinning constant $k_p$, by contrast, exhibits different field dependences in different angular ranges, consistent with pinning by BZO at angles as large as 60$^{\circ}$, and with pinning along the $a,b$ planes as originating from the same mechanism as in pure YBCO with the field along the c axis.

Vortex motion in Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers: new aspects in the flux flow state

We study the dynamics of vortex lines in Supercondutor/Ferromagnet/Superconductor (SFS) heterostructures at microwave frequencies. We have employed swept-frequency, Corbino-disk and resonant, dielectric-resonator techniques to obtain the field and temperature dependence of the vortex-state parameters. We concentrate here on the genuine flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{ff}$, that we access at subcritical currents using a sufficiently high driving frequency. We find that $ρ_{ff}$ does not follow the well-known Bardeen-Stephen model. Instead, it is well described by a full time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau expression at very thin F layer thickness, but changes to a previously unreported field-dependence when the F layer exceeds a few nm.

Microwave properties of DyBCO monodomain in the mixed state and comparison with other RE-BCO systems

We report on microwave measurements on DyBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\rmδ}$ monodomains grown by the top-seeded melt-textured technique. We measured the field increase of the surface resistance $R_{\rm s}(H)$ in the a-b plane at 48.3 GHz. Measurements were performed at fixed temperatures in the range 70 K - $T_{\rm c}$ with a static magnetic field $μ_0H<0.8$ T parallel to the c-axis. Low field steep increase of the dissipation, typical signature of the presence of weak links, is absent, thus indicating the single-domain behaviour of the sample under study. The magnetic field dependence of $R_{\rm s}(H)$ is ascribed to the dissipation caused by vortex motion. The analysis of $X_{\rm s}(H)$ points to a free-flow regime, thus allowing to obtain the vortex viscosity as a function of temperature. We compare the results with those obtained on RE-BCO systems. In particular, we consider strongly pinned films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\rmδ}$ with nanometric BaZrO$_3$ inclusions.

Wideband microwave measurements in Nb/Pd$_{84}$Ni$_{16}$/Nb structures and comparison with thin Nb films

We present wideband microwave measurements (1-22 GHz) taken on Superconductor/Ferromagnet heterostructures with the Corbino disk technique. We apply the technique to Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers in the vortex state and we compare the results to data taken with the same technique on a Nb thin film. We show that it is possible to directly extract the genuine flux-flow resistivity from our frequency-dependent measurements without overcoming the (depinning) critical current. The characteristic frequency for vortex relaxation can also be estimated, without resorting to a specific model. We find that the F layer determines a weakening of pinning and an enhancement of the flux-flow resistivity with respect to the Nb film.

Effect of nanosize BaZrO3 inclusions on vortex parameters in YBaCuO

We report on the field dependence of the microwave complex resistivity data in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/BaZrO$_3$ films grown by PLD at various BaZrO$_3$ content. The data, analyzed within a recently developed general framework for the mixed-state microwave response of superconductors, yield the field dependence of the fluxon parameters such as the vortex viscosity and the pinning constant. We find that pinning undergoes a change of regime when the BaZrO$_3$ content in the target increases from 2.5 mol.% to 5 mol.%. Simultaneously, the vortex viscosity becomes an increasing function of the applied magnetic field. We propose a scenario in which flux lines are pinned as bundles, and a crossover from dilute point pins to dense c-axis correlated defects takes place between 2.5 and 5 mol.% in the BZO concentration. Our data are inconsistent with vortices occupying mainly the BaZrO$_3$ sites at low fields, and suggest instead that vortices occupy both BaZrO$_3$ sites and interstitials in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ matrix, even at low fields.

New aspects of microwave properties of Nb in the mixed state

We present a study of the frequency dependence of the vortex dynamics in a conventional superconductor. We have employed a swept-frequency, Corbino-disk technique to investigate the temperature (3.6K-Tc) and high-field (from Hc2/2 to Hc2) microwave complex resistivity in Nb thin (20-40 nm) films as a function of the frequency (1-20 GHz). We have found several previously unnoticed features: (i) a field-dependent depinning frequency in the GHz range; (ii) deviations from the accepted frequency dependence, that can be ascribed to some kind of vortex creep; (iii) the presence of switching phenomena, reminiscent of vortex instabilities. We discuss the possible origin of the features here reported.
