Young stars and brown dwarfs surrounding Alnilam (eps Ori) and Mintaka (del Ori)

Aims: We look for new regions for the search of substellar objects. Methods: Two circular areas, 45 arcmin-radius each, centred on the young massive star systems Alnilam and Mintaka in the Orion Belt, have been explored. The regions are very young (less than 10 Ma), have low extinction, and are neighbours to sigma Orionis (~3 Ma), a young open cluster very rich in brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects. We have used Virtual Observatory tools, the astro-photometric Tycho-2, DENIS and 2MASS catalogues, 10 control fields at similar galactic latitudes, and X-ray, mid-infrared and spectroscopic data from the literature. Results: We have compiled exhaustive lists of known young stars and new candidate members in the Ori OB1b association, and of fore- and background sources. A total of 136 stars display features of extreme youth, like early spectral types, lithium in absorption, or mid-infrared flux excess. Other two young brown dwarf and 289 star candidates have been identified from an optical/near-infrared colour-magnitude diagram. We list additional 74 known objects that might belong to the association. This catalogue can serve as an input for characterisation of the stellar and high-mass substellar populations in the Orion Belt. Finally, we have investigated the surface densities and radial distributions of young objects surrounding Alnilam and Mintaka, and compared them with those in the sigma Orionis cluster. We report a new open cluster centred on Mintaka. Conclusions: Both regions can be analogs to the sigma Orionis cluster, but more massive, more extended, slightly older, and less radially concentrated.

Automated supervised classification of variable stars I. Methodology

The fast classification of new variable stars is an important step in making them available for further research. Selection of science targets from large databases is much more efficient if they have been classified first. Defining the classes in terms of physical parameters is also important to get an unbiased statistical view on the variability mechanisms and the borders of instability strips. Our goal is twofold: provide an overview of the stellar variability classes that are presently known, in terms of some relevant stellar parameters; use the class descriptions obtained as the basis for an automated `supervised classification' of large databases. Such automated classification will compare and assign new objects to a set of pre-defined variability training classes. For every variability class, a literature search was performed to find as many well-known member stars as possible, or a considerable subset if too many were present. Next, we searched on-line and private databases for their light curves in the visible band and performed period analysis and harmonic fitting. The derived light curve parameters are used to describe the classes and define the training classifiers. We compared the performance of different classifiers in terms of percentage of correct identification, of confusion among classes and of computation time. We describe how well the classes can be separated using the proposed set of parameters and how future improvements can be made, based on new large databases such as the light curves to be assembled by the CoRoT and Kepler space missions.

Crossover from weak to strong coupling regime in dispersive circuit QED

We study the decoherence of a superconducting qubit due to the dispersive coupling to a damped harmonic oscillator. We go beyond the weak qubit-oscillator coupling, which we associate with a phase Purcell effect, and enter into a strong coupling regime, with qualitatively different behavior of the dephasing rate. We identify and give a physicaly intuitive discussion of both decoherence mechanisms. Our results can be applied, with small adaptations, to a large variety of other physical systems, e. g. trapped ions and cavity QED, boosting theoretical and experimental decoherence studies.

Generation of Symmetric Dicke States of Remote Qubits with Linear Optics

We propose a method for generating all symmetric Dicke states, either in the long-lived internal levels of N massive particles or in the polarization degrees of freedom of photonic qubits, using linear optical tools only. By means of a suitable multiphoton detection technique, erasing Welcher-Weg information, our proposed scheme allows the generation and measurement of an important class of entangled multiqubit states.

Synthesis models in the VO framework

The theory interest group in the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) has the goal of ensuring that theoretical data and services are taken into account in the IVOA standards process. In this poster we present some of the efforts carried out by this group to include evolutionary synthesis models in the VO framework. In particular we present the VO tool PGos3, developed by the INAOE (Mexico) and the Spanish Virtual Observatory which includes most of public SSP models in the VO framework (e.g. VOSpec). We also describe the problems related with the inclusion of synthesis models in the VO framework and we try to encourage people to define the way in which synthesis models should be described. This issue has implications not only for the inclusion of synthesis models in the the VO framework but also for a proper usage of synthesis models.

Stellar Population Challenge: analysis of M67 with the VO

In this poster we present the analysis of the CMD of M67 (proposed in the Stellar Population Challenge) performed with VO applications. We found that, although the VO environment is still not ready to perform a complete analysis, its use provides highly useful additional information for the analysis. Thanks to the current VO framework, we are able to identify stars in the provided CMD that are not suitable for isochrone fitting. Additionally, we can complete our knowledge of this cluster extending the analysis to IR colors, which were not provided in the original data but that are available thanks to the VO. On the negative side, we find it difficult to access theoretical data from VO applications, so, currently, it is not possible to perform completely the analysis of the cluster inside the VO framework. However it is expected that the situation will improve in a near future.

Phase-space theory for dispersive detectors of superconducting qubits

Motivated by recent experiments, we study the dynamics of a qubit quadratically coupled to its detector, a damped harmonic oscillator. We use a complex-environment approach, explicitly describing the dynamics of the qubit and the oscillator by means of their full Floquet state master equations in phase-space. We investigate the backaction of the environment on the measured qubit and explore several measurement protocols, which include a long-term full read-out cycle as well as schemes based on short time transfer of information between qubit and oscillator. We also show that the pointer becomes measurable before all information in the qubit has been lost.

Selective Control of the Symmetric Dicke Subspace in Trapped Ions

We propose a method of manipulating selectively the symmetric Dicke subspace in the internal degrees of freedom of N trapped ions. We show that the direct access to ionic-motional subspaces, based on a suitable tuning of motion-dependent AC Stark shifts, induces a two-level dynamics involving previously selected ionic Dicke states. In this manner, it is possible to produce, sequentially and unitarily, ionic Dicke states with increasing excitation number. Moreover, we propose a probabilistic technique to produce directly any ionic Dicke state assuming suitable initial conditions.

Quantum Imaging with Incoherent Photons

We propose a technique to obtain sub-wavelength resolution in quantum imaging with potentially 100% contrast using incoherent light. Our method requires neither path-entangled number states nor multi-photon absorption. The scheme makes use of N photons spontaneously emitted by N atoms and registered by N detectors. It is shown that for coincident detection at particular detector positions a resolution of λ/ N can be achieved.

Strongly-Driven One-Atom Laser and Decoherence Monitoring

We propose the implementation of a strongly-driven one-atom laser, based on the off-resonant interaction of a three-level atom in $Λ$-configuration with a single cavity mode and three laser fields. We show that the system can be described equivalently by a two-level atom resonantly coupled to the cavity and driven by a strong effective coherent field. The effective dynamics can be solved exactly, including a thermal field bath, allowing an analytical description of field statistics and entanglement properties. We also show the possible generation of Schrödinger cat states for the whole atom-field system and for the field alone after atomic measurement. We propose a way to monitor the system decoherence by measuring atomic population. Finally, we confirm the validity of our model through numerical solutions.

Dirac Cat States in Relativistic Landau Levels

We show that a relativistic version of Schrodinger cat states, here called Dirac cat states, can be built in relativistic Landau levels when an external magnetic field couples to a relativistic spin 1/2 charged particle. Under suitable initial conditions, the associated Dirac equation produces unitarily Dirac cat states involving the orbital quanta of the particle in a well defined mesoscopic regime. We demonstrate that the proposed Dirac cat states have a purely relativistic origin and cease to exist in the non-relativistic limit. In this manner, we expect to open relativistic quantum mechanics to the rich structures of quantum optics and quantum information.

Dirac Equation and Quantum Relativistic Effects in a Single Trapped Ion

We present a method of simulating the Dirac equation in 3+1 dimensions for a free spin-1/2 particle in a single trapped ion. The Dirac bispinor is represented by four ionic internal states, and position and momentum of the Dirac particle are associated with the respective ionic variables. We show also how to simulate the simplified 1+1 case, requiring the manipulation of only two internal levels and one motional degree of freedom. Moreover, we study relevant quantum-relativistic effects, like the Zitterbewegung and Klein's paradox, the transition from massless to massive fermions, with the relativistic and nonrelativistic limits, via the tuning of controllable experimental parameters.

Cool objects: From SED fitting to age estimation

The physical properties of almost any kind of astronomical object can be derived by fitting synthetic spectra or photometry extracted from theoretical models to observational data. This process usually involves working with multiwavelength data, which is one of the cornerstones of the VO philosophy. From this kind of studies, when combining with theoretical isochrones one can even estimate ages. We present here the results obtained from a code designed to perform chi^2 tests to both spectroscopic models (or the associated synthetic photometry) and combinations of blackbodies (including modified blackbodies). Some steps in this process can already be done in a VO environment, and the rest are in the process of development. We must note that this kind of studies in star forming regions, clusters, etc. produce a huge amount of data, very tedious to analyze using the traditional methodology. This make them excellent examples where to apply the VO capabilities.

Exact Mapping of the 2+1 Dirac Oscillator onto the Jaynes-Cummings Model: Ion-Trap Experimental Proposal

We study the dynamics of the 2+1 Dirac oscillator exactly and find spin oscillations due to a {\it Zitterbewegung} of purely relativistic origin. We find an exact mapping of this quantum-relativistic system onto a Jaynes-Cummings model, describing the interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized single-mode field. This equivalence allows us to map a series of quantum optical phenomena onto the relativistic oscillator, and viceversa. We make a realistic experimental proposal, at reach with current technology, for studying the equivalence of both models using a single trapped ion.

Effective Quantum Dynamics of Interacting Systems with Inhomogeneous Coupling

We study the quantum dynamics of a single mode/particle interacting inhomogeneously with a large number of particles and introduce an effective approach to find the accessible Hilbert space where the dynamics takes place. Two relevant examples are given: the inhomogeneous Tavis-Cummings model (e.g., N atomic qubits coupled to a single cavity mode, or to a motional mode in trapped ions) and the inhomogeneous coupling of an electron spin to N nuclear spins in a quantum dot.

Sequential Quantum Cloning

Not all unitary operations upon a set of qubits can be implemented by sequential interactions between each qubit and an ancillary system. We analyze the specific case of sequential quantum cloning 1->M and prove that the minimal dimension D of the ancilla grows linearly with the number of clones M. In particular, we obtain D = 2M for symmetric universal quantum cloning and D = M+1 for symmetric phase-covariant cloning. Furthermore, we provide a recipe for the required ancilla-qubit interactions in each step of the sequential procedure for both cases.

Inductive Entanglement Classification of Four Qubits under SLOCC

Using an inductive approach to classify multipartite entangled states under stochastic local operations and classical communication introduced recently by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 74, 052336 (2006)], we give the complete classification of four-qubit entangled pure states. Apart from the expected degenerate classes, we show that there exist eight inequivalent ways to entangle four qubits. In this respect, permutation symmetry is taken into account and states with a structure differing only by parameters inside a continuous set are considered to belong to the same class.

Tavis-Cummings model and collective multi-qubit entanglement in trapped ions

We present a method of generating collective multi-qubit entanglement via global addressing of an ion chain following the guidelines of the Tavis-Cummings model, where several qubits are coupled to a collective motional mode. We show that a wide family of Dicke states and irradiant states can be generated by single global laser pulses, unitarily or helped with suitable postselection techniques.
