Infrared dynamics of the massive $ϕ^4$ theory on de Sitter space

We study massive real scalar $ϕ^4$ theory in the expanding Poincare patch of de Sitter space. We calculate the leading two-loop infrared contribution to the two-point function in this theory. We do that for the massive fields both from the principal and complementary series. As can be expected at this order light fields from the complementary series show stronger infrared effects than the heavy fields from the principal one. For the principal series, unlike the complementary one, we can derive the kinetic equation from the system of Dyson--Schwinger equation, which allows us to sum up the leading infrared contributions from all loops. We find two peculiar solutions of the kinetic equation. One of them describes the stationary Gibbons--Hawking-type distribution for the density per comoving volume. Another solution shows explosive (square root of the pole in finite proper time) growth of the particle number density per comoving volume. That signals the possibility of the destruction of the expanding Poincare patch even by the very massive fields. We conclude with the consideration of the infrared divergences in global de Sitter space and in its contracting Poincare patch.

Physical meaning and consequences of the loop IR divergences in global dS

Following arXiv:1012.2107 we show that in global de Sitter space its isometry is broken by the loop IR divergences for any invariant vacuum state of the massive scalars. We derive kinetic equation in global de Sitter space. It follows from the Dyson-Schwinger equation of the Schwinger-Keldysh diagrammatic technique in IR limit and allows to understand the physical meaning and consequences of the loop IR divergences. In many respects the isometry breaking in global dS is similar to the one in the contracting Poincare patch of de Sitter space. Hence, as a warm up exercise we study the kinetic equation and properties of its solutions in the expanding and contracting Poincare patches of de Sitter space. Quite unexpectedly we find that under some initial conditions there is an explosive production of massive particles in the expanding Poincare patch.

IR divergences and kinetic equation in de Sitter space. (Poincare patch; Principal series)

We explicitly show that the one loop IR correction to the two--point function in de Sitter space scalar QFT does not reduce just to the mass renormalization. The proper interpretation of the loop corrections is via particle creation revealing itself through the generation of the quantum averages $ $, $ $ and $ $, which slowly change in time. We show that this observation in particular means that loop corrections to correlation functions in de Sitter space can not be obtained via analytical continuation of those calculated on the sphere. We find harmonics for which the particle number $ $ dominates over the anomalous expectation values $ $ and $ $. For these harmonics the Dyson--Schwinger equation reduces in the IR limit to the kinetic equation. We solve the latter equation, which allows us to sum up all loop leading IR contributions to the Whiteman function. We perform the calculation for the principle series real scalar fields both in expanding and contracting Poincare patches.

Solution of the Dyson--Schwinger equation on de Sitter background in IR limit

We propose an ansatz which solves the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the real scalar fields in Poincare patch of de Sitter space in the IR limit. The Dyson-Schwinger equation for this ansatz reduces to the kinetic equation, if one considers scalar fields from the principal series. Solving the latter equation we show that under the adiabatic switching on and then off the coupling constant the Bunch-Davies vacuum relaxes in the future infinity to the state with the flat Gibbons-Hawking density of out-Jost harmonics on top of the corresponding de Sitter invariant out-vacuum.

Comparative study of loop contributions in AdS and dS

The generic feature of non-conformal fields in Poincare patch of de Sitter space is the presence of large IR loop corrections even for massive fields. Moreover, in global de Sitter there are loop IR divergences for the massive fields. Naive analytic continuation from de Sitter to Anti-de-Sitter might lead one to conclude that something similar should happen in the latter space as well. However, we show that there are no large IR effects in the one-loop two-point functions in the Poincare patch of Anti-de-Sitter space even for the zero mass minimally coupled scalar fields. As well there are neither large IR effects nor IR divergences in global Anti-de-Sitter space even for the zero mass.

Hints on integrability in the Wilsonian/holographic renormalization group

The Polchinski equations for the Wilsonian renormalization group in the $D$--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be written at large $N$ in a Hamiltonian form. The Hamiltonian defines evolution along one extra holographic dimension (energy scale) and can be found exactly for the complete basis of single trace operators. We show that at low energies independently of the dimensionality $D$ the Hamiltonian system in question (for the subsector of operators without derivatives) reduces to the {\it integrable} effective theory. The obtained Hamiltonian system describes large wavelength KdV type (Burger--Hopf) equation and is related to the effective theory obtained by Das and Jevicki for the matrix quantum mechanics.

Classical radiation by free-falling charges in de Sitter spacetime

We study the classical radiation emitted by free-falling charges in de Sitter spacetime coupled to different kinds of fields. Specifically we consider the cases of the electromagnetic field, linearized gravity and scalar fields with arbitrary mass and curvature coupling. Given an arbitrary set of such charges, there is a generic result for sufficiently late times which corresponds to each charge being surrounded by a field zone with negligible influence from the other charges. Furthermore, we explicitly find a static solution in the static patch adapted to a charge (implying no energy loss by the charge) which can be regularly extended beyond the horizon to the full de Sitter spacetime, and show that any other solution decays at late times to this one. On the other hand, for non-conformal scalar fields the inertial observers naturally associated with spatially flat coordinates will see a non-vanishing flux far from the horizon, which will fall off more slowly than the inverse square of the distance for sufficiently light fields (m^2 + ξR < 5H^2/4) and give rise to a total integrated flux that grows unboundedly with the radius. This can be qualitatively interpreted as a consequence of a classical parametric amplification of the field generated by the charge due to the time-dependent background spacetime. Most of these results do not hold for massless minimally coupled scalar fields, whose special behavior is analyzed separately.

An exact statement for Wilsonian and Holographic renormalization group

We show that Polchinski equations in the D--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be reduced at large $N$ to the Hamiltonian equations in a (D+1)-dimensional theory. In the subsector of the $\Tr ϕ^l$ (for all $l$) operators we find the exact form of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The relation to the Holographic renormalization group is discussed.

Comments on QED with background electric fields

It is well known that there is a total cancellation of the \emph{factorizable} IR divergences in unitary interacting field theories, such as QED and quantum gravity. In this note we show that such a cancellation does not happen in QED with background electric fields which can produce pairs. There is no factorization of the IR divergences.

Gluing of Surfaces with Polygonal Boundaries

By pairwise gluing of edges of a polygon, one produces two-dimensional surfaces with handles and boundaries. In this paper, we count the number ${\cal N}_{g,L}(n_1, n_2, ..., n_L)$ of different ways to produce a surface of given genus $g$ with $L$ polygonal boundaries with given numbers of edges $n_1, n_2, >..., n_L$. Using combinatorial relations between graphs on real two-dimensional surfaces, we derive recursive relations between ${\cal N}_{g,L}$. We show that Harer-Zagier numbers appear as a particular case of ${\cal N}_{g,L}$ and derive a new explicit expression for them.

Towards the Theory of Non--Abelian Tensor Fields I

We present a triangulation--independent area--ordering prescription which naturally generalizes the well known path ordering one. For such a prescription it is natural that the two--form ``connection'' should carry three ``color'' indices rather than two as it is in the case of the ordinary one--form gauge connection. To define the prescription in question we have to define how to {\it exponentiate} a matrix with three indices. The definition uses the fusion rule structure constants.

Comment on the Surface Exponential for Tensor Fields

Starting from essentially commutative exponential map $E(B|I)$ for generic tensor-valued 2-forms $B$, introduced in \cite{Akh} as direct generalization of the ordinary non-commutative $P$-exponent for 1-forms with values in matrices (i.e. in tensors of rank 2), we suggest a non-trivial but multi-parametric exponential ${\cal E}(B|I|t_γ)$, which can serve as an interesting multi-directional evolution operator in the case of higher ranks. To emphasize the most important aspects of the story, construction is restricted to backgrounds $I_{ijk}$, associated with the structure constants of {\it commutative} associative algebras, what makes it unsensitive to topology of the 2d surface. Boundary effects are also eliminated (straightfoward generalization is needed to incorporate them).

On the relations between correlation functions in SYM/pp-wave correspondence

In this note we establish the explicit relation between correlation functions in ${\cal N} = 4$ SUSY Yang--Mills theory on $S^3\times R$ in a double scaling limit and scattering amplitudes of the String Theory on the pp-wave background. The relation is found for two-- and three--point correlation functions in these theories. As a by product we formulate a dictionary for the correspondence between these theories: in particular, we find some unknown relations between the parameters in these theories. Furthermore, we argue that the String Theory on the pp--wave background is related to four--dimensional SUSY Yang--Mills theory rather than to the reduced matrix quantum mechanics. We identify string theory excitations which are related to the Kaluza--Klein excitation of the Yang--Mills theory on $S^3$.

Notes on Multi-Trace Operators and Holographic Renormalization Group

It is shown that the Holographic Renormalization Group can be formulated universally within Quantum Field Theory as (the quantization of) the Hamiltonian flow on the cotangent bundle to the space of gauge-invariant single-trace operators supplied with the canonical symplectic structure. The classical Hamiltonian dynamics is recovered in the large $N$ limit.

On the relation between effective supersymmetric actions in different dimensions

We make two remarks: (i) Renormalization of the effective charge in a 4--dimensional (supersymmetric) gauge theory is determined by the same graphs and is rigidly connected to the renormalization of the metric on the moduli space of the classical vacua of the corresponding reduced quantum mechanical system. Supersymmetry provides constraints for possible modifications of the metric, and this gives us a simple proof of nonrenormalization theorems for the original 4-dimensional theory. (ii) We establish a nontrivial relationship between the effective (0+1)-dimensional and (1+1)-dimensional Lagrangia (the latter represent conventional Kahlerian sigma models).

A Correspondence Between Supersymmetric Yang-Mills and Supergravity Theories

AdS/CFT-correspondence establishes a relationship between supersymmetric gravity (SUGRA) on Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space and supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory which is conformaly invariant (CFT). The AdS space is the solution of the Einstein-Hilbert equations with a constant negative curvature. Why is this relationship important? What kind of relationship is this? How does one find it? The purpose of this text is to answer these questions. We try to present the main ideas and arguments underlying this relationship, starting with a brief sketch of old string theory statements and proceeding with the definition of D-branes and a description of their main features. We finish with the observation of the correspondence in question and the arguments that favor it.

D-brane annihilation, renormalization-group flow and non-linear $σ$-model for the ADHM construction

In this note $D9$- and anti-$D9$-brane annihilation in type I string theory is probed by a $D1$-brane. We consider the covariant Green-Schwarz or twistor formulation of the probe theory. We expect the theory to be $κ$-invariant after the annihilation is completed. Conditions of the $κ$-invariance of the theory impose constraints on the background tachyon field. Solutions to the constraints define tachyon values which correspond to type I $D5$-branes as remnants of the annihilation. As a byproduct we get a theory which lies in the same universality class as the non-linear $σ$-model for the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin construction.
