Cancellation of the collisional frequency shift in caesium fountain clocks

We have observed that the collisional frequency shift in primary caesium fountain clocks varies with the clock state population composition and, in particular, is zero for a given fraction of the |F = 4, mF = 0> atoms, depending on the initial cloud parameters. We present a theoretical model explaining our observations. The possibility of the collisional shift cancellation implies an improvement in the performance of caesium fountain standards and a simplification in their operation. Our results also have implications for test operation of fountains at multiple pi/2 pulse areas.

Light forces in ultracold photoassociation

We study the time-resolved photoassociation of ultracold sodium in an optical dipole trap. The photoassociation laser excites pairs of atoms to molecular states of large total angular momentum at high intensities (above 20 kW/cm$^{2}$). Such transitions are generally suppressed at ultracold temperatures by the centrifugal barriers for high partial waves. Time-resolved ionization measurements reveal that the atoms are accelerated by the dipole potential of the photoassociation beam. We change the collision energy by varying the potential depth, and observe a strong variation of the photoassociation rate. These results demonstrate the important role of light forces in cw photoassociation at high intensities.

Controlling Polar Molecules in Optical Lattices

We investigate theoretically the interaction of polar molecules with optical lattices and microwave fields. We demonstrate the existence of frequency windows in the optical domain where the complex internal structure of the molecule does not influence the trapping potential of the lattice. In such frequency windows the Franck-Condon factors are so small that near-resonant interaction of vibrational levels of the molecule with the lattice fields have a negligible contribution to the polarizability and light-induced decoherences are kept to a minimum. In addition, we show that microwave fields can induce a tunable dipole-dipole interaction between ground-state rotationally symmetric (J=0) molecules. A combination of a carefully chosen lattice frequency and microwave-controlled interaction between molecules will enable trapping of polar molecules in a lattice and possibly realize molecular quantum logic gates. Our results are based on ab initio relativistic electronic structure calculations of the polar KRb and RbCs molecules combined with calculations of their rovibrational motion.

Making Cold Molecules by Time-dependent Feshbach Resonances

Pairs of trapped atoms can be associated to make a diatomic molecule using a time dependent magnetic field to ramp the energy of a scattering resonance state from above to below the scattering threshold. A relatively simple model, parameterized in terms of the background scattering length and resonance width and magnetic moment, can be used to predict conversion probabilities from atoms to molecules. The model and its Landau-Zener interpretation are described and illustrated by specific calculations for $^{23}$Na, $^{87}$Rb, and $^{133}$Cs resonances. The model can be readily adapted to Bose-Einstein condensates. Comparison with full many-body calculations for the condensate case show that the model is very useful for making simple estimates of molecule conversion efficiencies.

Scattering length determination from trapped pairs of atoms

A method is described for estimating effective scattering lengths via spectroscopy on a trapped pair of atoms. The method relies on the phenomena that the energy levels of two atoms in a harmonic trap are shifted by their collisional interaction. The amount of shift depends on the strength of the interaction (i.e. scattering length). By combining the spectra of the trap state energy levels and a suitable model for the effective scattering length, an estimate for the latter may be inferred. Two practical methods for measuring the trap spectra are proposed and illustrated in examples. The accuracy of the scheme is analyzed and requirements on measurement precision are given.

Optical tuning of the scattering length of cold alkaline earth atoms

It is possible to tune the scattering length for the collision of ultra-cold 1S0 ground state alkaline-earth atoms using an optical Feshbach resonance. This is achieved with a laser far detuned from an excited molecular level near the frequency of the atomic intercombination 1S0--3P1 transition. Simple resonant scattering theory, illustrated by the example of 40Ca, allows an estimate of the magnitude of the effect. Unlike alkali metal species, large changes of the scattering length are possible while atom loss remains small, because of the very narrow line width of the molecular photoassociation transition. This raises prospects for control of atomic interactions for a system without magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance levels.

Observation of Feshbach resonances in an ultracold gas of ${}^{52}$Cr

We have observed Feshbach resonances in elastic collisions between ultracold ${}^{52}$Cr atoms. This is the first observation of collisional Feshbach resonances in an atomic species with more than one valence electron. The zero nuclear spin of ${}^{52}$Cr and thus the absence of a Fermi-contact interaction leads to regularly-spaced resonance sequences. By comparing resonance positions with multi-channel scattering calculations we determine the s-wave scattering length of the lowest $^{2S+1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ potentials to be $\unit[112(14)]{a_0}$, $\unit[58(6)]{a_0}$ and $-\unit[7(20)]{a_0}$ for S=6, 4, and 2, respectively, where $a_{0}=\unit[0.0529]{nm}$.

Precise determination of $^6$Li cold collision parameters by radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound molecules

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules to precisely determine the molecular binding energies and the energy splittings between molecular states for different magnetic fields. These measurements allow us to extract the interaction parameters of ultracold $^6$Li atoms based on a multi-channel quantum scattering model. We determine the singlet and triplet scattering lengths to be $a_s=45.167(8)a_0$ and $a_t=-2140(18)a_0$ (1 $a_0$ = 0.0529177 nm), and the positions of the broad Feshbach resonances in the energetically lowest three $s-$wave scattering channels to be 83.41(15) mT, 69.04(5) mT, and 81.12(10) mT.

Photoassociation spectroscopy of cold alkaline earth atoms near the intercombination line

The properties of photoassociation (PA) spectra near the intercombination line (the weak transition between $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{1}$ states) of group II atoms are theoretically investigated. As an example we have carried out a calculation for Calcium atoms colliding at ultra low temperatures of 1 mK, 1 $μ$K, and 1 nK. Unlike in most current photoassociation spectroscopy the Doppler effect can significantly affect the shape of the investigated lines. Spectra are obtained using Ca--Ca and Ca--Ca$^*$ short-range {\it ab initio} potentials and long-range van der Waals and resonance dipole potentials. The similar van der Waals coefficients of ground $^{1}S_{0} + ^{1}S_{0}$ and excited $^{1}S_{0} + ^{3}P_{1}$ states cause the PA to differ greatly from those of strong, allowed transitions with resonant dipole interactions. The density of spectral lines is lower, the Condon points are at relatively short range, and the reflection approximation for the Franck-Condon factors is not applicable, and the spontaneous decay to bound ground-state molecules is efficient. Finally, the possibility of efficient production of cold molecules is discussed.

Feshbach Resonances in Fermionic Lithium-6

Feshbach resonances in lithium-6 were experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed. In addition to two previously known s-wave resonances, we found three p-wave resonances. Four of these resonances are narrow and yield a precise value of the singlet scattering length, but do not allow us to accurately predict the location of the broad resonance near 83 mT. Its position was previously measured in a molecule-dissociation experiment for which we, here, discuss systematic shifts.

Effects of Inhomogeneity on the Spectrum of the Mott-Insulator State

We investigate the existence of quantum {\it quasi} phase transitions for an ensemble of ultracold bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice, performing exact diagonalizations of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. When an external parabolic potential is added to the system {\it quasi} phase transitions are induced by the competition of on-site mean-field energy, hopping energy, and energy offset among lattice sites due to the external potential and lead to the coexistence of regions of particle localization and delocalization in the lattice. We clarify the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these {\it quasi} phase transitions as a function of the depth of the external potential when the on-site mean-field energy is large compared to the hopping energy. In particular, we show that a model Hamiltonian involving a few Fock states can describe the behavior of energy gap, mean particle numbers per site, and number fluctuations per site almost quantitatively. The role of symmetry on the gap as a function of the depth of the external trapping potential is elucidated. We discuss possible experimental signatures of {\it quasi} phase transitions studying the single particle density matrix and explain microscopically the occurrence of local maxima in the momentum distribution. The role of a thermal population of the excited states on the momentum distribution is discussed.

Ab initio calculation of the KRb dipole moments

The relativistic configuration interaction valence bond method has been used to calculate permanent and transition electric dipole moments of the KRb heteronuclear molecule as a function of internuclear separation. The permanent dipole moment of the ground state $X^1Σ^+$ potential is found to be 0.30(2) $ea_0$ at the equilibrium internuclear separation with excess negative charge on the potassium atom. For the $a^3Σ^+$ potential the dipole moment is an order of magnitude smaller (1 $ea_0=8.47835 10^{-30}$ Cm) In addition, we calculate transition dipole moments between the two ground-state and excited-state potentials that dissociate to the K(4s)+Rb(5p) limits. Using this data we propose a way to produce singlet $X^1Σ^+$ KRb molecules by a two-photon Raman process starting from an ultracold mixture of doubly spin-polarized ground state K and Rb atoms. This Raman process is only allowed due to relativistic spin-orbit couplings and the absence of gerade/ungerade selection rules in heteronuclear dimers.

Purely-long-range bound states of He$(2s ^3S)+$He$(2p ^3P)$

We predict the presence and positions of purely-long-range bound states of $^4$He$(2s ^3S)+{}^4$He$(2p ^3P)$ near the $2s ^3S_1+2p ^3P_{0,1}$ atomic limits. The results of the full multichannel and approximate models are compared, and we assess the sensitivity of the bound states to atomic parameters characterizing the potentials. Photoassociation to these purely-long-range molecular bound states may improve the knowledge of the scattering length associated with the collisions of two ultracold spin-polarized $^4$He$(2s ^3S)$ atoms, which is important for studies of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Pseudopotential model of ultracold atomic collisions in quasi-one- and two-dimensional traps

We describe a model for s-wave collisions between ground state atoms in optical lattices, considering especially the limits of quasi-one and two dimensional axisymmetric harmonic confinement. When the atomic interactions are modelled by an s-wave Fermi-pseudopotential, the relative motion energy eigenvalues can easily be obtained. The results show that except for a bound state, the trap eigenvalues are consistent with one- and two- dimensional scattering with renormalized scattering amplitudes. For absolute scattering lengths large compared with the tightest trap width, our model predicts a novel bound state of low energy and nearly-isotropic wavefunction extending on the order of the tightest trap width.

Measurement of the Zero Crossing in a Feshbach Resonance of Fermionic 6-Li

We measure a zero crossing in the scattering length of a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of 6-Li. To locate the zero crossing, we monitor the decrease in temperature and atom number arising from evaporation in a CO2 laser trap as a function of magnetic field B. The temperature decrease and atom loss are minimized for B=528(4) G, consistent with no evaporation. We also present preliminary calculations using potentials that have been constrained by the measured zero crossing and locate a broad Feshbach resonance at approximately 860 G, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions. In addition, our theoretical model predicts a second and much narrower Feshbach resonance near 550 G.

Self-consistent model of ultracold atomic collisions and Feshbach resonances in tight harmonic traps

We consider the problem of cold atomic collisions in tight traps, where the absolute scattering length may be larger than the trap size. As long as the size of the trap ground state is larger than a characteristic length of the van der Waals potential, the energy eigenvalues can be computed self-consistently from the scattering amplitude for untrapped atoms. By comparing with the exact numerical eigenvalues of the trapping plus interatomic potentials, we verify that our model gives accurate eigenvalues up to milliKelvin energies for single channel s-wave scattering of $^{23}$Na atoms in an isotropic harmonic trap, even when outside the Wigner threshold regime. Our model works also for multi-channel scattering, where the scattering length can be made large due to a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance.

Scattering length of the ground state Mg+Mg collision

We have constructed the X 1SIGMAg+ potential for the collision between two ground state Mg atoms and analyzed the effect of uncertainties in the shape of the potential on scattering properties at ultra-cold temperatures. This potential reproduces the experimental term values to 0.2 inverse cm and has a scattering length of +1.4(5) nm where the error is prodominantly due to the uncertainty in the dissociation energy and the C6 dispersion coefficient. A positive sign of the scattering length suggests that a Bose-Einstein condensate of ground state Mg atoms is stable.

Photoassociation of sodium in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the formation of ultra-cold Na$_2$ molecules using single-photon photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate. The photoassociation rate, linewidth and light shift of the J=1, $v=135$ vibrational level of the \mterm{A}{1}{+}{u} molecular bound state have been measured. We find that the photoassociation rate constant increases linearly with intensity, even where it is predicted that many-body effects might limit the rate. Our observations are everywhere in good agreement with a two-body theory having no free parameters.
