Discrete Breathers in Josephson Ladders

We present a study of nonlinear localized excitations called discrete breathers in a superconducting array. These localized solutions were recently observed in Josephson-junction ladder arrays by two different experimental groups. We review the experiments made by Trias et al. We report the detection of different single-site and multi-site breather states and study the dynamics when changing the array bias current. By changing the temperature we can control the value of the damping (the Stewart-McCumber parameter) in the array, thus allowing an experimental study at different array parameters. We propose a simple DC circuit model to understand most of the features of the detected states. We have also compared this model and the experiments with simulations of the dynamics of the array. We show that the study of the resonances in the ladder and the use of harmonic balance techniques allow for understanding of most of the numerical results. We have computed existence diagrams of breather solutions in our arrays, found resonant localized solutions and described the localized states in terms of vortex and antivortex motion.

Depinning of kinks in a Josephson-junction ratchet array

We have measured the depinning of trapped kinks in a ratchet potential using a fabricated circular array of Josephson junctions. Our ratchet system consists of a parallel array of junctions with alternating cell inductances and junctions areas. We have compared this ratchet array with other circular arrays. We find experimentally and numerically that the depinning current depends on the direction of the applied current in our ratchet ring. We also find other properties of the depinning current versus applied field, such as a long period and a lack of reflection symmetry, which we can explain analytically.

Discrete breathers in dc biased Josephson-junction arrays

We propose a method to excite and detect a rotor localized mode (rotobreather) in a Josephson-junction array biased by dc currents. In our numerical studies of the dynamics we have used experimentally realizable parameters and included self-inductances. We have uncovered two families of rotobreathers. Both types are stable under thermal fluctuations and exist for a broad range of array parameters and sizes including arrays as small as a single plaquette. We suggest a single Josephson-junction plaquette as an ideal system to experimentally investigate these solutions.

Discrete breathers in nonlinear lattices: Experimental detection in a Josephson array

We present an experimental study of discrete breathers in an underdamped Josephson-junction array. Breathers exist under a range of dc current biases and temperatures, and are detected by measuring dc voltages. We find the maximum allowable bias current for the breather is proportional to the array depinning current while the minimum current seems to be related to a junction retrapping mechanism. We have observed that this latter instability leads to the formation of multi-site breather states in the array. We have also studied the domain of existence of the breather at different values of the array parameters by varying the temperature.

Discreteness-induced resonances and AC voltage amplitudes in long one-dimensional Josephson junction arrays

New resonance steps are found in the experimental current-voltage characteristics of long, discrete, one-dimensional Josephson junction arrays with open boundaries and in an external magnetic field. The junctions are underdamped, connected in parallel, and DC biased. Numerical simulations based on the discrete sine-Gordon model are carried out, and show that the solutions on the steps are periodic trains of fluxons, phase-locked by a finite amplitude radiation. Power spectra of the voltages consist of a small number of harmonic peaks, which may be exploited for possible oscillator applications. The steps form a family that can be numbered by the harmonic content of the radiation, the first member corresponding to the Eck step. Discreteness of the arrays is shown to be essential for appearance of the higher order steps. We use a multi-mode extension of the harmonic balance analysis, and estimate the resonance frequencies, the AC voltage amplitudes, and the theoretical limit on the output power on the first two steps.

Resonances of dynamical checkerboard states in Josephson arrays with self-inductance

We study the dynamics of fully frustrated, underdamped Josephson arrays. Experiments reveal remarkable similarities among the dc current-voltage characteristics of several kinds of square and triangular arrays, where two resonant voltages are observed. Simulations indicate that a dynamical checkerboard solution underlies these similarities. By assuming such a solution, we reduce the governing equations to three coupled pendulum equations, and thereby calculate the voltages of the intrinsic resonances analytically.
