Comment to article "A light--hole exciton in a quantum dot" by Y.H.Huo et al, Nature Physics 10, 46 (2014)

The exciton ground state in strained quantum dots similar to those fabricated in article specified in the title is shortly discussed within a relevant model Hamiltonian. Some characteristics of the light--hole exciton ground state reached in a dot under the tensile biaxial strain appear to be sensitive to the strain anisotropy breaking a purity of this state. It refers in particular to a degree of the in--plane polarization of the emission and the fine structure of the ground state.

Polarization dynamics in quantum dots: The role of dark excitons

We study an impact of the fine structure of the heavy--hole ground state exciton confined in semiconductor quantum dots on the photoluminescence polarization dynamics solving the relevant system of the rate equations. The presence of the dark excitons is usually ignored and the polarization decay is assumed to be caused by direct transitions within the radiative doublet. We demonstrate that in strongly confined quantum dots the dark excitons, which are energetically well below the bright excitons, have actually a decisive effect on the polarization dynamics due to their persistent nature. The linear polarization shows nonexponential decay controlled by a conversion of the dark into a bright exciton. To get quantitative answers for specific quantum dot structures, all the necessary information can be obtained already from experiments on the luminescence dynamics following nonresonant excitation in these dots.

Rashba coupling in quantum dots: exact solution

We present an analytic solution to the problem of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor quantum dots. We calculate the exact energy spectrum, wave-functions, and spin--flip relaxation times. We discuss various effects inaccessible via perturbation theory. In particular, we find that the effective gyromagnetic ratio is strongly suppressed by the spin-orbit coupling. The spin-flip relaxation rate has a maximum as a function of the spin-orbit coupling and is therefore suppressed in both the weak- and strong coupling limits.

Shakeup spectrum in a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field

The shakeup emission spectrum in a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field is calculated analytically. The case of a localized photocreated hole is studied and the calculations are performed with a Nozieres-De Dominicis-like Hamiltonian. The hole potential is assumed to be small compared to the cyclotron energy and is therefore treated as a perturbation. Two competing many-body effects, the shakeup of the electron gas in the optical transition, and the excitonic effect, contribute to the shakeup satellite intensities. It is shown, that the range of the hole potential essentially influences the shakeup spectrum. For a short range interaction the above mentioned competition is more important and results in the shakeup emission quenching when electrons occupy only the lowest Landau level. When more than one Landau level is filled, the intensities of the shakeup satellites change with magnetic field nonmonotonically. If the interaction is long range, the Fermi sea shakeup processes dominate. Then, the satellite intensities smoothly decrease when the magnetic field increases and there is no suppression of the shakeup spectrum when the only lowest Landau level is filled. It is shown also that a strong hole localization is not a necessary condition for the SU spectrum to be observed. If the hole localization length is not small compared to the magnetic length, the SU spectrum still exists. Only the number of contributions to the SU spectrum reduces and the shakeup processes are always dominant.

Exciton spin relaxation in single semiconductor quantum dots

We study the relaxation of the exciton spin (longitudinal relaxation time $T_{1}$) in single asymmetrical quantum dots due to an interplay of the short--range exchange interaction and acoustic phonon deformation. The calculated relaxation rates are found to depend strongly on the dot size, magnetic field and temperature. For typical quantum dots and temperatures below 100 K, the zero--magnetic field relaxation times are long compared to the exciton lifetime, yet they are strongly reduced in high magnetic fields. We discuss explicitly quantum dots based on (In,Ga)As and (Cd,Zn)Se semiconductor compounds.

Temperature dependence of polarization relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots

The decay time of the linear polarization degree of the luminescence in strongly confined semiconductor quantum dots with asymmetrical shape is calculated in the frame of second-order quasielastic interaction between quantum dot charge carriers and LO phonons. The phonon bottleneck does not prevent significantly the relaxation processes and the calculated decay times can be of the order of a few tens picoseconds at temperature $T \simeq 100$K, consistent with recent experiments by Paillard et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf86}, 1634 (2001)].

Magnetotransport in 2D lateral superlattices with smooth disorder: Quasiclassical theory of commensurability oscillations

Commensurability oscillations in the magnetoresistivity of a two-dimensional electron gas in a two-dimensional lateral superlattice are studied in the framework of quasiclassical transport theory. It is assumed that the impurity scattering is of small-angle nature characteristic for currently fabricated high-mobility heterostructures. The shape of the modulation-induced magnetoresistivity $Δρ_{xx}$ depends on the value of the parameter $γ\equiv η^2 ql/4$, where $η$ and $q$ are the strength and the wave vector of the modulation, and $l$ is the transport mean free path. For $γ\ll 1$, the oscillations are described, in the regime of not too strong magnetic fields $B$, by perturbation theory in $η$ as applied earlier to the case of one-dimensional modulation. At stronger fields, where $Δρ_{xx}$ becomes much larger than the Drude resistivity, the transport takes the advection-diffusion form (Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell) with a large Péclet number, implying a much slower ($\propto B^{3/4}$) increase of the oscillation amplitude with $B$. If $γ\gg 1$, the transport at low $B$ is dominated by the modulation-induced chaos (rather than by disorder). The magnetoresistivity drops exponentially and the commensurability oscillations start to develop at the magnetic fields where the motion takes the form of the adiabatic drift. Conditions of applicability, the role of the type of disorder, and the feasibility of experimental observation are discussed.

Magnetotransport in lateral superlattices with small-angle impurity scattering: Low-field magnetoresistance

An analytical study of the low-field magnetoresistance of a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a weak periodic modulation is presented. We assume small-angle impurity scattering characteristic for high-mobility semiconductor heterostructures. It is shown that the condition for existence of the strong low-field magnetoresistance induced by so-called channeled orbits is $η^{3/2}ql\gg 1$, where $η$ and $q$ are the strength and the wave vector of the modulation, and $l$ is the transport mean free path. Under this condition, the magnetoresistance scales as $η^{7/2}$.

Exchange interaction effects in inter-Landau level Auger scattering in a two-dimensional electron gas

We consider the influence of spin effects on the inter-Landau level electron-electron scattering rate in a two-dimensional electron gas. Due to the exchange spin splitting, the Landau levels are not equidistant. This leads to the suppresion of Auger processes and a nonlinear dependence of the lifetime on the concentration of the excited electrons even at very low excitation levels.
