Modulational instability in nonlocal Kerr-type media with random parameters

Modulational instability of continuous waves in nonlocal focusing and defocusing Kerr media with stochastically varying diffraction (dispersion) and nonlinearity coefficients is studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that nonlocality with the sign-definite Fourier images of the medium response functions suppresses considerably the growth rate peak and bandwidth of instability caused by stochasticity. Contrary, nonlocality can enhance modulational instability growth for a response function with negative-sign bands.

Perturbation-induced radiation by the Ablowitz-Ladik soliton

An efficient formalism is elaborated to analytically describe dynamics of the Ablowitz-Ladik soliton in the presence of perturbations. This formalism is based on using the Riemann-Hilbert problem and provides the means of calculating evolution of the discrete soliton parameters, as well as shape distortion and perturbation-induced radiation effects. As an example, soliton characteristics are calculated for linear damping and quintic perturbations.

The modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation: Facts and artefacts

It is argued that the integrable modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the nonlinearity dispersion term is the true starting point to analytically describe subpicosecond pulse dynamics in monomode fibers. Contrary to the known assertions, solitons of this equation are free of self-steepining and the breather formation is possible.

Adiabatic Interaction of N Ultrashort Solitons: Universality of the Complex Toda Chain Model

Using the Karpman-Solov'ev method we derive the equations for the 2-soliton adiabatic interaction for solitons of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation (MNSE). Then we generalize these equations to the case of N interacting solitons with almost equal velocities and widths. On the basis of this result we prove that the N MNSE-soliton train interaction (N>2) can be modeled by the completely integrable complex Toda chain (CTC). This is an argument in favor of universality of the complex Toda chain which was previously shown to model the soliton train interaction for nonlinear Schrodinger solitons. The integrability of the CTC is used to describe all possible dynamical regimes of the N-soliton trains which include asymptotically free propagation of all N solitons, N-soliton bound states, various mixed regimes, etc. It allows also to describe analytically the manifolds in the 4N-dimensional space of initial soliton parameters which are responsible for each of the regimes mentioned above. We compare the results of the CTC model with the numerical solutions of the MNSE for 2 and 3-soliton interactions and find a very good agreement.

The Gordon-Haus effect for modified NLS solitons

Random jitter in the soliton arrival time (the Gordon-Haus effect) is analyzed for solitons being solutions of the integrable modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation. It is shown that the mean square fluctuation of the soliton position depends on the soliton parameters which can be properly adjusted to suppress the Gordon-Haus jitter.

Nearly integrable nonlinear equations on the half line

We employ the Riemann-Hilbert problem for solution of the initial-boundary value problems for nearly integrable equations on the half line which have important applications in physics. The detailed derivation of the integrable and perturbation-induced evolutions of the spectral data are given for the two most important models, the self-induced transparency and the stimulated Raman scattering. In particular, we prove that dephasing stabilizes the spike phenomenon in the stimulated Raman scattering.

Perturbation theory for the modified nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger solitons

The perturbation theory based on the Riemann-Hilbert problem is developed for the modified nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation which describes the propagation of femtosecond optical pulses in nonlinear single-mode optical fibers. A detailed analysis of the adiabatic approximation to perturbation-induced evolution of the soliton parameters is given. The linear perturbation and the Raman gain are considered as examples.
