Aharonov-Casher Effect and the Coherent Flux Tunneling in the Hybrid Charge Quantum Interference Device

By exploiting the Aharonov-Casher effect we demonstrate a suppression of magnetic flux tunneling in a Hybrid Charge Quantum Interference Device. The main part of this device is two Josephson junctions with a small superconducting island between them. To minimize phase fluctuations across Josephson junctions, this structure is embedded in a compact super-inductive NbN loop. The Interference between the flux tunneling paths is determined by the island-induced charge, which is controlled by an external voltage. The charge sensitive operation of the device is subjected to poisoning by the quasiparticles generated in the NbN film.

Single-atom maser with engineered circuit for population inversion

We present a blueprint for a maser with a single three-level transmon superconducting artificial atom. The system can be pumped coherently via a two-photon process, and to achieve high population inversion, the relaxation rate of the metastable state is increased via an auxiliary low-Q cavity coupled to a transition between the transmon excited states. We show numerically that such a maser can operate both in the intermediate coupling regime with super-Poissonian photon statistics and in the strong coupling regime, where the statistics is sub-Poissonian. For the former, the maser exhibits thresholdless behavior and for the latter, there is a well-defined pumping threshold. A useful side-effect of the auxiliary resonator is that it allows to overcome the photon blockade effect for the pump, which would otherwise prevent high photon population. Finally, we observe the bistability of the steady-state Wigner function and the self-quenching effect for some parameters.

Temperature dependence of the resistance of a phase-slip line in a thin superconducting film

An experimental investigation was made of the temperature dependence of the first step of a phase-slip line in a thin superconducting tin film. The depth of penetration of a nonequilibrium longitudinal electric field into the superconductor was determined near the critical temperature. A comparison was made with theoretical investigations of one-dimensional structures containing phase-slip centers. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with the theory when the mechanism of mixing of electron-like and hole-like branches of the quasiparticle spectrum was governed by the elastic scattering of the excitations. This was one more experimental confirmation that a phase-slip line is a two-dimensional analog of a phase-slip center.

Observation of a nonmonotonic transverse voltage induced by vortex motion in a superconducting thin film

A vortex-induced transverse voltage in a superconducting film, previously predicted theoretically, has been seen experimentally for the first time. The magnitude of this voltage and its nonmonotonic current dependence are explained on the basis of a curvature of the trajectory of vortices resulting from their interaction. A good agreement between theory and experiment is found.

Conversion of phase-slip lines into elementary resistive domains in a current-carrying superconducting thin film

A nonmonotonic dependence of the differential resistance of the first step of a phase-slip line on the heat-reservoir temperature near Tc has been observed experimentally for the first time in a superconducting tin film. This behavior is interpreted as a conversion of the phase-slip line into an elementary resistive domain as the result of a deviation from the isothermal conditions.
