Direct Terrestrial Test of Lorentz Symmetry in Electrodynamics to 10$^{-18}$

Lorentz symmetry is a foundational property of modern physics, underlying the standard model of particles and general relativity. It is anticipated that these two theories are low energy approximations of a single theory that is unified and consistent at the Planck scale. Many unifying proposals allow Lorentz symmetry to be broken, with observable effects appearing at Planck-suppressed levels; thus precision tests of Lorentz invariance are needed to assess and guide theoretical efforts. Here, we use ultra-stable oscillator frequency sources to perform a modern Michelson-Morley experiment and make the most precise direct terrestrial test to date of Lorentz symmetry for the photon, constraining Lorentz violating orientation-dependent relative frequency changes $Δν$/$ν$ to 9.2$\pm$10.7$\times10^{-19}$ (95$\%$ confidence interval). This order of magnitude improvement over previous Michelson-Morley experiments allows us to set comprehensive simultaneous bounds on nine boost and rotation anisotropies of the speed of light, finding no significant violations of Lorentz symmetry.

Ultra-stable cryogenic optical resonators for tests of fundamental physics

We present the design and first measurement results for an ultra-stable cryogenically cooled optical sapphire resonator system with a potential relative frequency stability better than 3x10^-17. This level of oscillator stability allows for more precise tests of Einstein's theories of relativity and thus could help to find first hints of "new physics". We will give some details on a projected experiment to test Lorentz invariance that will utilize these cavities.

Electromagnetic cavity tests of Lorentz invariance on Earth and in space

We present a Michelson-Morley type experiment for testing the isotropy of the speed of light in vacuum and matter. The experiment compares the resonance frequency of an actively rotated monolithic optical cryogenic sapphire resonator against the resonance frequency of a stationary evacuated optical cavity made of ultra-low-expansion glass. The results yield an upper limit for the anisotropy of the speed of light in matter (sapphire) of Delta(c)/c < 1 x 10^-16, limited by the frequency stability of the sapphire resonator.

Testing Lorentz Invariance by Comparing Light Propagation in Vacuum and Matter

We present a Michelson-Morley type experiment for testing the isotropy of the speed of light in vacuum and matter. The experiment compares the resonance frequency of a monolithic optical sapphire resonator with the resonance frequency of an orthogonal evacuated optical cavity made of fused silica while the whole setup is rotated on an air bearing turntable once every 45 s. Preliminary results yield an upper limit for the anisotropy of the speed of light in matter (sapphire) of Δc/c < 4x10^(-15), limited by the frequency stability of the sapphire resonator operated at room temperature. Work to increase the measurement sensitivity by more than one order of magnitude by cooling down the sapphire resonator to liquid helium temperatures (LHe) is currently under way.

High-resolution Doppler-free molecular spectroscopy with a continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator

We present a reliable, narrow linewidth (100 kHz) continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (OPO) suitable for high-resolution spectroscopy applications. The OPO is based on a periodically-poled lithium-niobate crystal and features a specially designed intracavity etalon which permits its continuous tuning and stable operation at any desired wavelength in a wide operation range. We demonstrate Doppler-free spectroscopy on a rovibrational transition of methane at 3.39 um.
