Thermalization of orbital angular momentum beams in multimode optical fibers

We present a general theory of thermalization of light in multimode optical fibers, including optical beams with nonzero orbital angular momentum or vortex beams. A generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition is obtained, based on the conservation of the angular momentum. We confirm our predictions by numerical simulations and experiments based on holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. This establishes new constraints for the achievement of spatial beam self-cleaning, giving previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.

Statistical mechanics of beam self-cleaning in GRIN multimode optical fibers

Since its first demonstration in graded-index multimode fibers, spatial beam self-cleaning has attracted a growing research interest. It allows for the propagation of beams with a bell-shaped spatial profile, thus enabling the use of multimode fibers for several applications, from biomedical imaging to high-power beam delivery. So far, beam self-cleaning has been experimentally studied under several different experimental conditions. Whereas it has been theoretically described as the irreversible energy transfer from high-order modes towards the fundamental mode, in analogy with a beam condensation mechanism. Here, we provide a definitive theoretical description of beam self-cleaning, by means of a semi-classical statistical mechanics model of wave thermalization. This approach is confirmed by an extensive experimental characterization, based on a holographic mode decomposition technique, employing laser pulses with temporal durations ranging from femtoseconds up to nanoseconds. An excellent agreement between theory and experiments is found, which demonstrates that beam self-cleaning can be fully described in terms of the basic conservation laws of statistical mechanics.

Hydrodynamic 2D turbulence and spatial beam condensation in multimode optical fibers

We show that Kerr beam self-cleaning results from parametric mode mixing instabilities, that generate a number of nonlinearly interacting modes with randomized phases -- optical wave turbulence, followed by a direct and inverse cascade towards high mode numbers and condensation into the fundamental mode, respectively. This optical self-organization effect is analogue to wave condensation that is well-known in hydrodynamic 2D turbulence.

Selective excitation of plasmons superlocalized at sharp perturbations of metal nanoparticles

Sharp metal corners and tips support plasmons localized on the scale of the curvature radius -- superlocalized plasmons. We analyze plasmonic properties of nanoparticles with small and sharp corner- and tip-shaped surface perturbations in terms of hybridization of the superlocalized plasmons, which frequencies are determined by the perturbations shape, and the ordinary plasmons localized on the whole particle. When the frequency of a superlocalized plasmon gets close to that of the ordinary plasmon, their strong hybridization occurs and facilitates excitation of an optical hot-spot near the corresponding perturbation apex. The particle is then employed as a nano-antenna that selectively couples the free-space light to the nanoscale vicinity of the apex providing precise local light enhancement by several orders of magnitude.

The laminar-turbulent transition in a fibre laser

Studying transition to a highly disordered state of turbulence from a linearly stable coherent laminar state is conceptually and technically challenging and immensely important, e.g. all pipe and channel flows are of that type. In optics, understanding how systems lose coherence with increase of spatial size or excitation level is an open fundamental problem of practical importance. Here we identify, arguably, the simplest system where this classical problem can be studied: we learnt to operate a fibre laser in laminar and turbulent regimes. We show that laminar phase is an analogue of a one-dimensional coherent condensate and turbulence onset is through a spatial loss of coherence. We discover a new mechanism of laminar-turbulent transition in laser operation: condensate destruction by the clustering of dark and grey solitons. This is important both for the design of devices exploiting coherent dynamics and for conceptually new technologies based on systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Efficient numerical method of the fiber Bragg grating synthesis

A new numerical method is developed for solution of the Gel'fand - Levitan - Marchenko inverse scattering integral equations. The method is based on the fast inversion procedure of a Toeplitz Hermitian matrix and special bordering technique. The method is highly competitive with the known discrete layer peeling method in speed and exceeds it noticeably in accuracy at high reflectance.

Group delay in Bragg grating with linear chirp

An analytic solution for Bragg grating with linear chirp in the form of confluent hypergeometric functions is analyzed in the asymptotic limit of long grating. Simple formulas for reflection coefficient and group delay are derived. The simplification makes it possible to analyze irregularities of the curves and suggest the ways of their suppression. It is shown that the increase in chirp at fixed other parameters decreases the oscillations in the group delay, but gains the oscillations in the reflection spectrum. The conclusions are in agreement with numerical calculations.

Strong nonlinear regime of resonant four-wave mixing in a gas

The explicit solution is obtained for Raman four-wave mixing $ω_4=ω_1-ω_2+ω_3$ of two strong fields $E_1, E_3$ and two weak fields $E_2, E_4$ in a four-level system with the large Doppler broadening. The resonance of the mixing coefficient vs intensity is found near equal Rabi frequencies of strong fields and interpreted as an intersection of quasi-energy levels. Up to 6 peaks appear in the dependence of conversion coefficient on the detuning of the probe field. An unexpected additional pair of peaks is a result of averaging over velocities and disappears at low temperature. The effects allow explaining saturation behavior in recent experiments on the mixing in sodium molecular vapor.

Giant Coulomb broadening and Raman lasing on ionic transitions

CW generation of anti-Stokes Raman laser on a number of blue-green argon-ion lines (4p-4s, 4p-3d) has been demonstrated with optical pumping from metastable levels 3d'^2G, 3d^4F. It is found, that the population transfer rate is increased by a factor of 3-5 (and hence, the output power of such Raman laser) owing to Coulomb diffusion in the velocity space. Measured are the excitation and relaxation rates for the metastable level. The Bennett hole on the metastable level has been recorded using the probe field technique. It has been shown that the Coulomb diffusion changes shape of the contour to exponential cusp profile while its width becomes 100 times the Lorentzian one and reaches values close to the Doppler width. Such a giant broadening is also confirmed by the shape of the absorption saturation curve.

The Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the XY Kagomé antiferromagnet

The problem of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition in the highly frustrated XY Kagomé antiferromagnet is solved. The problem is mapped onto that of the KT transition in the XY ferromagnet on the hexagonal lattice. The transition temperature is found. It is shown that the spin correlation function exponentially decays with distance even in the low-temperature phase, in contrast to the order parameter correlation function, which decays algebraically with distance.

Narrowing of Bennett Hole in Collisional Plasma

The profile of a Bennett hole induced by laser field in ionic distribution in collisional plasma is calculated. Influence of Chandrasekhar's dependence of coefficients of velocity space transport on the profile is included into the calculation for the first time. It is found that the hole narrows down as the field detuning frequency increases. Physical cause of the effect is the falling dependence of Coulomb collision frequency on the ionic velocity. Estimations show that the effect is quite observable under conditions of high-current gas-discharge plasma.

Method of effective potential for quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet theory

Self - consistent temperature dependence of the average magnetization in quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet is obtained as a first approximation of perturbation theory on an inverse radius by application of the functional method for quantum ferromagnet. The experimental data are compared with the theoretical results for {\bf EuO} ferromagnet. A quantitative agreement is observed between theoretical and experimental results outside interval near Curie temperature. The theory is of critical behavior in the vicinity of Curie temperature $T_c$. Theoretical $T_c$ value itself is agreed with the experimental one with an accuracy of several percents.
