Multi hole bands and quasi 2-dimensionality in Cr2Ge2Te6 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

In the present work, we investigate the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 by photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate the presence of multiple hole-type bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level indicating that the material can support high electrical conductivity by manipulating the chemical potential. Also, our photon energy dependent angle resolved photoemission experiment revealed that several of the hole bands exhibit weak dispersion with varied incident photon energy providing experimental signature for its two dimensionality. These findings can pave the way for further studies towards the application of Cr2Ge2Te6 in electronic devices.

Vacancy-mediated fcc/bcc phase separation in Fe1-xNix ultrathin films

The phase separation occurring in Fe-Ni thin films near the Invar composition is studied by using high-resolution spectromicroscopy techniques and density functional theory calculations. Annealed at temperatures around 300 C, Fe0.70Ni0.30 films on W(110) break into micron-sized bcc and fcc domains with compositions in agreement with the bulk Fe-Ni phase diagram. Ni is found to be the diffusing species in forming the chemical heterogeneity. The experimentally determined energy barrier of 1.59 +- 0.09 eV is identified as the vacancy formation energy via density functional theory calculations. Thus, the principal role of the surface in the phase separation process is attributed to vacancy creation without interstitials.

Persistent Coherence and Spin-Polarization of Topological Surface States on Topological Insulators

Gapless surface states on topological insulators are protected from elastic scattering on non-magnetic impurities which makes them promising candidates for low-power electronic applications. However, for wide-spread applications, these states should remain coherent and significantly spin polarized at ambient temperatures. Here, we studied the coherence and spin-structure of the topological states on the surface of a model topological insulator, Bi2Se3, at elevated temperatures in spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found an extremely weak broadening and essentially no decay of spin polarization of the topological surface state up to room temperature. Our results demonstrate that the topological states on surfaces of topological insulators could serve as a basis for room temperature electronic devices.

Topological insulator in a Bi-Bi$_2$Se$_3$ infinitely adaptive superlattice phase

We report spin- and angle-resolved photoemission studies of a topological insulator from the infinitely adaptive series between elemental Bi and Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The compound, based on Bi$_4$Se$_3$, is a 1:1 natural superlattice of alternating Bi$_2$ layers and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers; the inclusion of S allows the growth of large crystals, with the formula Bi$_4$Se$_{2.6}$S$_{0.4}$. The crystals cleave along the interfaces between the Bi$_2$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers, with the surfaces obtained having alternating Bi or Se termination. The resulting terraces, observed by photoemission electron microscopy, create avenues suitable for the study of one-dimensional topological physics. The electronic structure, determined by spin- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy, shows the existence of a surface state that forms a large, hexagonally shaped Fermi surface around the $Γ$ point of the surface Brillouin zone, with the spin structure indicating that this material is a topological insulator.

Spin Configuration and Scattering Rates on the Heavily Electron-doped Surface of Topological Insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$

Heavily electron-doped surfaces of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ have been studied by spin and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon doping, electrons occupy a series of {\bf k}-split pairs of states above the topological surface state. The {\bf k}-splitting originates from the large spin-orbit coupling and results in a Rashba-type behavior, unequivocally demonstrated here via the spin analysis. The spin helicities of the lowest laying Rashba doublet and the adjacent topological surface state alternate in a left-right-left sequence. This spin configuration sets constraints to inter-band scattering channels opened by electron doping. A detailed analysis of the scattering rates suggests that intra-band scattering dominates with the largest effect coming from warping of the Fermi surface.

Electronic Structure of the Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Using Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy: Evidence for a Nearly Full Surface Spin Polarization

We performed high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of the electronic structure and the spin texture on the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a model topological insulator. By tuning the photon energy, we found that the topological surface state is well separated from the bulk states in the vicinity of $k_z=Z$ plane of the bulk Brillouin zone. The spin-resolved measurements in that region indicate a very high degree of spin polarization of the surface state, $\sim 0.75$, much higher than previously reported. Our results demonstrate that the topological surface state on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is highly spin polarized and that the dominant factors limiting the polarization are mainly extrinsic.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeRh(001) ultra-thin films on W(100)

Epitaxial FeRh(100) films (CsCl structure, $\sim 10\ ML\ $ thick), prepared {\it in-situ} on a W(100) single crystal substrate, have been investigated via valence band and core level photoemission. The presence of the temperature-induced, first-order, antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic (AF$\rightarrow$ FM) transition in these films has been verified via linear dichroism in photoemission from the Fe 3$p$ levels. Core level spectra indicate a large moment on the Fe atom, practically unchanged in the FM and AF phases. Judging from the valence band spectra, the metamagnetic transition takes place without substantial modification of the electronic structure. In the FM phase, the spin-resolved spectra compare satisfactorily to the calculated spin-polarized bulk band structure.

A compact apparatus for studies of element and phase-resolved ferromagnetic resonance

We present a compact sample holder equipped with electromagnets and high frequency transmission lines; the sample holder is intended for combined x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and ferromagnetic resonance measurements (FMR). Time-resolved measurements of resonant x-ray detected FMR during forced precession are enabled by use of a rf excitation that is phase-locked to the storage ring bunch clock. Several applications of the combined XMCD + FMR technique are presented, demonstrating the flexibility of the experimental design.

Weakly Coupled Motion of Individual Layers in Ferromagnetic Resonance

We demonstrate a layer- and time-resolved measurement of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in a Ni81Fe19 / Cu / Co93Zr7 trilayer structure. Time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism has been developed in transmission, with resonant field excitation at a FMR frequency of 2.3 GHz. Small-angle (to 0.2 degree), time-domain magnetization precession could be observed directly, and resolved to individual layers through elemental contrast at Ni, Fe, and Co edges. The phase sensitivity allowed direct measurement of relative phase lags in the precession oscillations of individual elements and layers. A weak ferromagnetic coupling, difficult to ascertain in conventional FMR measurements, is revealed in the phase and amplitude response of individual layers across resonance.

Time-domain measurement of driven ferromagnetic resonance

We present a time-resolved measurement of magnetization dynamics during ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in a single layer of Ni81Fe19. Small-angle (<1 deg.) precession of elemental Ni, Fe moments could be measured directly and quantitatively using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in transmission. The high temporal and rotational sensitivity of of this technique has allowed characterization of the phase and amplitude of driven FMR motion at 2.3 GHz, verifying basic expectations for a driven resonance.

Precessional dynamics of elemental moments in a ferromagnetic alloy

We demonstrate an element-specific measurement of magnetization precession in a metallic ferromagnetic alloy, separating Ni and Fe moment motion in Ni81Fe19. Pump-probe X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), synchronized with short magnetic field pulses, is used to measure free magnetization oscillations up to 2.6 GHz with elemental specificity and a rotational resolution of < 2 deg. Magnetic moments residing on Ni sites and Fe sites in a Ni81Fe19(50nm) thin film are found to precess together at all frequencies, coupled in phase within instrumental resolution of 90 ps.

Disorder effects in electronic structure of substituted transition metal compounds

Investigating LaNi(1-x)M(x)O3 (M = Mn and Fe), we identify a characteristic evolution of the spectral function with increasing disorder in presence of strong interaction effects across the metal-insulator transition. We discuss these results vis-a-vis existing theories of electronic structure in simultaneous presence of disorder and interaction.
