The critical equation of state of the 2D Ising model

We compute the 2n-point coupling constants in the high-temperature phase of the 2d Ising model by using transfer-matrix techniques. This provides the first few terms of the expansion of the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) and of the equation of state in terms of the renormalized magnetization. By means of a suitable parametric representation, we determine an analytic extension of these expansions, providing the equation of state in the whole critical region in the t,h plane.

Critical exponents and equation of state of three-dimensional spin models

Three-dimensional spin models of the Ising and XY universality classes are studied by a combination of high-temperature expansions and Monte Carlo simulations. Critical exponents are determined to very high precision. Scaling amplitude ratios are computed via the critical equation of state. Our results are compared with other theoretical computations and with experiments, with special emphasis on the lambda transition of 4He.

Non-analyticity of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function of two-dimensional O(N) model

We discuss the analytic properties of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function beta(g) associated with the zero-momentum four-point coupling g in the two-dimensional phi^4 model with O(N) symmetry. Using renormalization-group arguments, we derive the asymptotic behavior of beta(g) at the fixed point g^*. We argue that beta'(g) = beta'(g^*) + O(|g-g^*|^{1/7}) for N=1 and beta'(g) = beta'(g^*) + O(1/\log |g-g^*|) for N > 2. Our claim is supported by an explicit calculation in the Ising lattice model and by a 1/N calculation for the two-dimensional phi^4 theory. We discuss how these nonanalytic corrections may give rise to a slow convergence of the perturbative expansion in powers of g.

One-loop renormalization of fermionic currents with the overlap-Dirac operator

We compute the one-loop lattice renormalization of the two-quark operators $\barψ Γψ$, where $Γ$ denotes the generic Dirac matrix, for the lattice formulation of QCD using the overlap-Dirac operator. We also study the renormalization of quark bilinears which are more extended and have better chiral properties. Finally, we present improved estimates of these renormalization constants, coming from cactus resummation and from mean field perturbation theory.

Randomly dilute spin models: a six-loop field-theoretic study

We consider the Ginzburg-Landau MN-model that describes M N-vector cubic models with O(M)-symmetric couplings. We compute the renormalization-group functions to six-loop order in d=3. We focus on the limit N -> 0 which describes the critical behaviour of an M-vector model in the presence of weak quenched disorder. We perform a detailed analysis of the perturbative series for the random Ising model (M=1). We obtain for the critical exponents: gamma = 1.330(17), nu = 0.678(10), eta = 0.030(3), alpha=-0.034(30), beta = 0.349(5), omega = 0.25(10). For M > 1 we show that the O(M) fixed point is stable, in agreement with general non-perturbative arguments, and that no random fixed point exists.

The effective potential of N-vector models: a field-theoretic study to O(ε^3)

We study the effective potential of three-dimensional O($N$) models. In statistical physics the effective potential represents the free-energy density as a function of the order parameter (Helmholtz free energy), and, therefore, it is related to the equation of state. In particular, we consider its small-field expansion in the symmetric (high-temperature) phase, whose coefficients are related to the zero-momentum $2j$-point renormalized coupling constants $g_{2j}$. For generic values of $N$, we calculate $g_{2j}$ to three loops in the field-theoretic approach based on the $ε$-expansion. The estimates of $g_{2j}$, or equivalently of $r_{2j}\equiv g_{2j}/g_4^{j-1}$, are obtained by a constrained analysis of the series that takes into account the exact results in one and zero dimensions.

The N-component Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian with cubic anisotropy: a six-loop study

We consider the Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian with a cubic-symmetric quartic interaction and compute the renormalization-group functions to six-loop order in d=3. We analyze the stability of the fixed points using a Borel transformation and a conformal mapping that takes into account the singularities of the Borel transform. We find that the cubic fixed point is stable for N>N_c, N_c = 2.89(4). Therefore, the critical properties of cubic ferromagnets are not described by the Heisenberg isotropic Hamiltonian, but instead by the cubic model at the cubic fixed point. For N=3, the critical exponents at the cubic and symmetric fixed points differ very little (less than the precision of our results, which is $\lesssim 1%$ in the case of $γ$ and $ν$). Moreover, the irrelevant interaction bringing from the symmetric to the cubic fixed point gives rise to slowly-decaying scaling corrections with exponent $ω_2=0.010(4)$. For N=2, the isotropic fixed point is stable and the cubic interaction induces scaling corrections with exponent $ω_2 = 0.103(8)$. These conclusions are confirmed by a similar analysis of the five-loop $ε$-expansion. A constrained analysis which takes into account that $N_c = 2$ in two dimensions gives $N_c = 2.87(5)$.

Lambda-parameter of lattice QCD with the overlap-Dirac operator

We compute the ratio $Λ_L/Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ between the scale parameter $Λ_L$, associated with a lattice formulation of QCD using the overlap-Dirac operator, and $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ of the $\bar{\rm MS}$ renormalization scheme. To this end, the necessary one-loop relation between the lattice coupling $g_0$ and the coupling renormalized in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme is calculated, using the lattice background field technique.

Resummation of Cactus Diagrams in Lattice QCD, to all Orders

We show how to perform a resummation, to all orders in perturbation theory, of a certain class of gauge invariant tadpole-like diagrams in Lattice QCD. These diagrams are often largely responsible for lattice artifacts. Our resummation leads to an improved perturbative expansion. Applied to a number of cases of interest, e.g. the lattice renormalization of some two-fermion operators, this expansion yields results remarkably close to corresponding nonperturbative estimates. We consider in our study both the Wilson and the clover action for fermions.

Mean-field expansion for spin models with medium-range interactions

We study the critical crossover between the Gaussian and the Wilson-Fisher fixed point for general O(N)-invariant spin models with medium-range interactions. We perform a systematic expansion around the mean-field solution, obtaining the universal crossover curves and their leading corrections. In particular we show that, in three dimensions, the leading correction scales as $R^{-3}, R$ being the range of the interactions. We compare our results with the existing numerical ones obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and present a critical discussion of other approaches.

Crossover scaling from classical to nonclassical critical behavior

We study the crossover between classical and nonclassical critical behaviors. The critical crossover limit is driven by the Ginzburg number G. The corresponding scaling functions are universal with respect to any possible microscopic mechanism which can vary G, such as changing the range or the strength of the interactions. The critical crossover describes the unique flow from the unstable Gaussian to the stable nonclassical fixed point. The scaling functions are related to the continuum renormalization-group functions. We show these features explicitly in the large-N limit of the O(N) phi^4 model. We also show that the effective susceptibility exponent is nonmonotonic in the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional Ising model.

Non-analyticity of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function of O(N) models

In the framework of the 1/N-expansion we show that the Callan-Symanzik beta- function associated with the four-point coupling g is non-analytic at its zero, i.e. at the fixed-point value g^* of g. This behavior can be interpreted by renormalization group arguments, and written in terms of scaling correction exponents. We obtain accurate determinations of g^* in 3-d and 2-d by exploiting two alternative approaches: the (4-d)-expansion and the high-temperature expansion. These results are compared with the available estimates by other approaches, such as the fixed-dimension perturbative expansion, Monte Carlo simulations, etc... We also present results for the n-point renormalized coupling constants that parameterize the behavior of the effective potential in the high- and low- temperature phases.

Low-temperature effective potential of the Ising model

We study the low-temperature effective potential of the Ising model. We evaluate the three-point and four-point zero-momentum renormalized coupling constants that parametrize the expansion of the effective potential near the coexistence curve. These results are obtained by a constrained analysis of the $ε$-expansion that uses accurate estimates for the two-dimensional Ising model.

Resummation of Cactus Diagrams in the Clover Improved Lattice Formulation of QCD

We extend to the clover improved lattice formulation of QCD the resummation of cactus diagrams, i.e. a certain class of tadpole-like gauge invariant diagrams. Cactus resummation yields an improved perturbative expansion. We apply it to the lattice renormalization of some two-fermion operators improving their one-loop perturbative estimates.

Four-point renormalized coupling constant and Callan-Symanzik beta-function in O(N) models

We investigate some issues concerning the zero-momentum four-point renormalized coupling constant g in the symmetric phase of O(N) models, and the corresponding Callan-Symanzik beta-function. In the framework of the 1/N expansion we show that the Callan- Symanzik beta-function is non-analytic at its zero, i.e. at the fixed-point value g^* of g. This fact calls for a check of the actual accuracy of the determination of g^* from the resummation of the d=3 perturbative g-expansion, which is usually performed assuming analyticity of the beta-function. Two alternative approaches are exploited. We extend the ε-expansion of g^* to O(ε^4). Quite accurate estimates of g^* are then obtained by an analysis exploiting the analytic behavior of g^* as function of d and the known values of g^* for lower-dimensional O(N) models, i.e. for d=2,1,0. Accurate estimates of g^* are also obtained by a reanalysis of the strong-coupling expansion of lattice N-vector models allowing for the leading confluent singularity. The agreement among the g-, ε-, and strong-coupling expansion results is good for all N. However, at N=0,1, ε- and strong-coupling expansion favor values of g^* which are sligthly lower than those obtained by the resummation of the g-expansion assuming analyticity in the Callan-Symanzik beta-function.

Effective potential in three-dimensional O(N) models

We consider the effective potential in three-dimensional models with O(N) symmetry. For generic values of N, and in particular for the physically interesting cases N=0,1,2,3, we determine the six-point and eight-point renormalized coupling constants which parametrize its small-field expansion. These estimates are obtained from the analysis of their $ε$-expansion, taking into account the exact results in one and zero dimensions, and, for the Ising model (i.e. N=1), the accurate high-temperature estimates in two dimensions. They are compared with the available results from other approaches. We also obtain corresponding estimates for the two-dimensional O($N$) models.
