First Measurement of the Neutral Current Excitation of the Delta Resonance on a Proton Target

The parity-violating asymmetry arising from inelastic electron-nucleon scattering at backward angle (~95 degrees) near the Delta(1232) resonance has been measured using a hydrogen target. From this asymmetry, we extracted the axial transition form factor G^A_{NΔ}, a function of the axial Adler form factors C^A_i. Though G^A_{NΔ} has been previously studied using charged current reactions, this is the first measurement of the weak neutral current excitation of the Delta using a proton target. For Q^2 = 0.34 (GeV/c)^2 and W = 1.18 GeV, the asymmetry was measured to be -33.4 \pm (5.3)_{stat} \pm (5.1)_{sys} ppm. The value of G^A_{NΔ} determined from the hydrogen asymmetry was -0.05 \pm (0.35)_{stat} \pm (0.34)_{sys} \pm (0.06)_{theory}. These findings agree within errors with theoretical predictions for both the total asymmetry and the form factor. In addition to the hydrogen measurement, the asymmetry was measured at the same kinematics using a deuterium target. The asymmetry for deuterium was determined to be -43.6 \pm (14.6)_{stat} \pm (6.2)_{sys} ppm.

Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in inclusive electroproduction of $π^-$ near the $Δ^0$ resonance

The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive $π^-$ production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasi-free photoproduction off the neutron via the $Δ^0$ resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$χ$PT), this asymmetry is related to a low energy constant $d_Δ^-$ that characterizes the parity-violating $γ$N$Δ$ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated $d_Δ^-$ in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from $A_γ^-=-5.2$ to $+5.2$ ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to $A_γ^-=-0.36\pm 1.06\pm 0.37\pm 0.03$ ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to $V_{ud}/V_{us}$. The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the $N-Δ$ axial transition form-factors using PV electron scattering.

Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries at Backward Angles in Elastic Electron-Proton and Quasi-elastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scattering from the neutron is made using a quasi-static deuterium approximation, and is also in agreement with theory.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 16N_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experimental study of the 16O(e,e'K^+)16N_Lambda reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K^+)Lambda,Sigma_0 exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV was obtained for 16N_Lambda with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus 16O_Lambda. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} hole states of the 15N core nucleus.

Parton promenade into the nucleon

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) offer a comprehensive picture of the nucleon structure and dynamics and provide a link between microscopic and macroscopic properties of the nucleon. These quantities, which can be interpreted as the transverse distribution of partons carrying a certain longitudinal momentum fraction of the nucleon can be accessed in deep exclusive processes. This lecture reviews the main features of the nucleon structure as obtained from elastic and inelastic lepton scatterings and unified in the context of the GPDs framework. Particular emphasis is put on the experimental methods to access these distributions and the today experimental status.

Probing Cold Dense Nuclear Matter

The protons and neutrons in a nucleus can form strongly correlated nucleon pairs. Scattering experiments, where a proton is knocked-out of the nucleus with high momentum transfer and high missing momentum, show that in 12C the neutron-proton pairs are nearly twenty times as prevalent as proton-proton pairs and, by inference, neutron-neutron pairs. This difference between the types of pairs is due to the nature of the strong force and has implications for understanding cold dense nuclear systems such as neutron stars.

A polarized positron source for CEBAF

A compact polarized positron source for Jefferson Lab is discussed. This scheme relies upon a high polarization (85%), high current (1 mA), low-energy (<100 MeV) electron beam to generate polarized positrons in a conversion target via polarized bremsstrahlung and pair creation. GEANT4 is used to simulate source distributions suitable for a CEBAF-like injector with positron polarization ~60% and nano-Ampere intensity. An experiment to test this scheme is outlined.

Polarized Positrons at Jefferson Lab

A novel concept for producing polarized positrons at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF polarized electron photo-injector is presented. This approach relies on the polarization transfer from low energy highly polarized electrons to positrons via bremsstrahlung followed by pair production in a conversion target. An experiment to test this concept is discussed on the basis of GEANT4 simulations. It is shown that this low energy approach, which benefits from recent advances in high current high polarization electron sources, can yield positron longitudinal polarization up to 40%.

Generalized parton distributions, the hunt for quark orbital momenta

The Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) are the appropriate framework for a universal description of the partonic structure of the nucleon. They characterize the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside the nucleon and consequently contain information about the spin of the nucleon. The current experimental knowledge about GPDs is reviewed with the emphasis on the determination of E^q(Q^2,x,xi,t), the least known and constrained GPD, of particular importance in the nucleon spin puzzle. The perspectives of this experimental program are also addressed.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 12B_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $Λ$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $Λ$ peak.

Angular dependence of recoil proton polarization in high-energy γd \to p n

We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily.. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.

Nucleon Structure and Generalized Parton Distributions

This paper discusses a selected part of the experimental program dedicated to the study of Generalized Parton Distributions, a recently introduced concept which provides a comprehensive framework for investigations of the partonic structure of the nucleon. Particular emphasis is put on the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering program performed at the Jefferson Laboratory. The short and long term future of this program is also discussed in the context of the several experimental efforts aiming at a complete and exhaustive mapping of Generalized Parton Distributions.

Results and Prospects of Few-Body System Structure Studies

This paper presents a selected review of the (e,e'p) experimental program recently completed at the Jefferson Laboratory in the domain of high momentum transfer and high recoil momentum. Particular emphasis is put on the current understanding of the reaction mechanisms and of the large final state interaction effects. Their consequences on the study of the nuclear wave function and nucleon-nucleon correlations are addressed. The short and long term future of the (e,e'p) experimental program is also discussed in the perspective of the study of the quark and gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei.
