Recursion Relations for Gauge Theory Amplitudes with Massive Vector Bosons and Fermions

We apply the on-shell tree-level recursion relations of Britto, Cachazo, Feng and Witten to a variety of processes involving internal and external massive particles with spin. We show how to construct multi-vector boson currents where one or more off-shell vector bosons couples to a quark pair and number of gluons. We give compact results for single vector boson currents with up to six partons and double vector boson currents with up to four partons for all helicity combinations. We also provide expressions for single vector boson currents with a quark pair and an arbitrary number of gluons for some specific helicity configurations. Finally, we show how to generalise the recursion relations to handle massive particles with spin on internal lines using $gg \to t\bar t$ as an example.

Collinear Limits in QCD from MHV Rules

We consider multi-parton collinear limits of QCD amplitudes at tree level. Using the MHV formalism we specify the underlying analytic structure of the resulting multi-collinear splitting functions. We derive general results for these splitting functions that are valid for specific numbers of negative helicity partons and an arbitrary number of positive helicity partons (or vice versa).

Recursion Relations for Gauge Theory Amplitudes with Massive Particles

We derive general tree-level recursion relations for amplitudes which include massive propagating particles. As an illustration, we apply these recursion relations to scattering amplitudes of gluons coupled to massive scalars. We provide new results for all amplitudes with a pair of scalars and n < 5 gluons. These amplitudes can be used as building blocks in the computation of one-loop 6-gluon amplitudes using unitarity based methods.

Multi-Gluon Collinear Limits from MHV diagrams

We consider the multi-collinear limit of multi-gluon QCD amplitudes at tree level. We use the MHV rules for constructing colour ordered tree amplitudes and the general collinear factorization formula to derive timelike splitting functions that are valid for specific numbers of negative helicity gluons and an arbitrary number of positive helicity gluons (or vice versa). As an example we present new results describing the collinear limits of up to six gluons.

Quark-Gluon Antenna Functions from Neutralino Decay

The computation of exclusive QCD jet observables at higher orders requires a method for the subtraction of infrared singular configurations arising from multiple radiation of real partons. One commonly used method at next-to-leading order (NLO) is based on the antenna factorization of colour-ordered matrix elements, and uses antenna functions to subtract the real radiation singularities. Up to now, NLO antenna functions could be derived in a systematic manner only for hard quark-antiquark pairs, while the gluon-gluon and quark-gluon antenna functions were constructed from their limiting behaviour. In this paper, we show that antenna functions for hard quark-gluon pairs can be systematically derived from an effective Lagrangian describing heavy neutralino decay. The infrared structure of the colour-ordered neutralino decay matrix elements at NLO and NNLO is shown to agree with the structure observed for parton radiation off a quark-gluon antenna.

Gluon-Gluon Antenna Functions from Higgs Boson Decay

Antenna functions describe the infrared singular behaviour of colour-ordered QCD matrix elements due to the emission of unresolved partons inside an antenna formed by two hard partons. In this paper, we show that antenna functions for hard gluon-gluon pairs can be systematically derived from the effective Lagrangian describing Higgs boson decay into gluons, and compute the the infrared structure of the colour-ordered Higgs boson decay matrix elements at NLO and NNLO.

MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Parton Amplitudes

We present MHV-rules for constructing perturbative amplitudes for a Higgs boson and an arbitrary number of partons. We give explicit expressions for amplitudes involving a Higgs and three negative helicity partons and any number of positive helicity partons - the NMHV amplitudes. We also present a recursive formulation of MHV rules that incorporates the Higgs, quarks and gluons. The recursion relations are valid for all non-MHV amplitudes. The general results agree numerically with all of the available Higgs + n-parton amplitudes and in some cases provide considerably shorter expressions.

MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Gluon Amplitudes

We use tree-level perturbation theory to show how non-supersymmetric one-loop scattering amplitudes for a Higgs boson plus an arbitrary number of partons can be constructed, in the limit of a heavy top quark, from a generalization of the scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. The Higgs boson couples to gluons through a top quark loop which generates, for large top mass, a dimension-5 operator H tr G^2. This effective interaction leads to amplitudes which cannot be described by the standard MHV rules; for example, amplitudes where all of the gluons have positive helicity. We split the effective interaction into the sum of two terms, one holomorphic (selfdual) and one anti-holomorphic (anti-selfdual). The holomorphic interactions give a new set of MHV vertices -- identical in form to those of pure gauge theory, except for momentum conservation -- that can be combined with pure gauge theory MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two negative helicities. Similarly, the anti-holomorphic interactions give anti-MHV vertices that can be combined with pure gauge theory anti-MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two positive helicities. A Higgs boson amplitude is the sum of one MHV-tower amplitude and one anti-MHV-tower amplitude. We present all MHV-tower amplitudes with up to four negative-helicity gluons and any number of positive-helicity gluons (NNMHV). These rules reproduce all of the available analytic formulae for Higgs + n-gluon scattering (n<=5) at tree level, in some cases yielding considerably shorter expressions.

Two-loop QCD helicity amplitudes for massless quark-quark scattering

We present the two-loop helicity amplitudes for the scattering of massless quarks in QCD. We use projector techniques to compute the coefficients of the general four-quark amplitude at up to two-loops in conventional dimensional regularisation and use these coefficients to derive the helicity amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme. The structure of the infrared divergences agrees with that predicted by Catani while expressions for the finite remainders for $q \bar q \to Q\bar Q$ and the processes related by crossing symmetry are given in terms of logarithms and polylogarithms that are real in the physical region. We have checked that the interference of tree and two-loop helicity amplitudes, summed over helicities and colours, reproduces the previous results for the finite remainders for interference of tree and two-loop amplitudes given in Refs. [1,2].

Master Integrals For Massless Two-Loop Vertex Diagrams With Three Offshell Legs

We compute the master integrals for massless two-loop vertex graphs with three off-shell legs. These master integrals are relevant for the QCD corrections to H to V*V* (where V = W, Z) and for two-loop studies of the triple gluon (and quark-gluon) vertex. We employ the differential equation technique to provide series expansions in epsilon for the various master integrals. The results are analytic and contain a new class of two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

Non-MHV Tree Amplitudes in Gauge Theory

We show how all non-MHV tree-level amplitudes in 0 =< N =< 4 gauge theories can be obtained directly from the known MHV amplitudes using the scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. Generic amplitudes are given by sums of inequivalent scalar diagrams with MHV vertices. The novel feature of our method is that after the `Feynman rules' for scalar diagrams are used, together with a particular choice of the reference spinor, no further helicity-spinor algebra is required to convert the results into a numerically usable form. Expressions for all relevant individual diagrams are free of singularities at generic phase space points, and amplitudes are manifestly Lorentz- (and gauge-) invariant. To illustrate the method, we derive expressions for n-point amplitudes with three negative helicities carried by fermions and/or gluons. We also write down a supersymmetric expression based on Nair's supervertex which gives rise to all such amplitudes in 0 =< N =< 4 gauge theories.

Infrared structure of $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets at NNLO - the $C_F^2$ contribution

We discuss the infrared structure of e+e- -> 2 and 3 jets at NNLO in QCD perturbation theory and describe subtraction terms that render the separate parton-level contributions finite. As a first result, we find that the NNLO C_F^2 contribution to the first moment of the Thrust distribution <1-T> = -20.4 +/- 4.

Numerical Evaluation of One-Loop Diagrams Near Exceptional Momentum Configurations

One problem which plagues the numerical evaluation of one-loop Feynman diagrams using recursive integration by part relations is a numerical instability near exceptional momentum configurations. In this contribution we will discuss a generic solution to this problem. As an example we consider the case of forward light-by-light scattering.

Two-loop splitting functions in QCD

We present the universal two-loop splitting functions that describe the limits of two-loop $n$-point amplitudes of massless particles when two of the momenta are collinear. To derive the splitting amplitudes, we take the collinear limits of explicit two-loop four-point helicity amplitudes computed in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme. The $g \to gg$ splitting amplitude has recently been computed using the unitarity sewing method and we find complete agreement with the results of Ref. \cite{Bern:2lsplit}. The two-loop $q \to qg$ and $g \to q\bar q$ splitting functions are new results. We also provide an expression for the two-loop soft splitting function.

Infrared Structure of $e^+e^- \to 2$ jets at NNLO

The production of two jets is the simplest exclusive quantum chromodynamics process in electron-positron annihilation. Using this process, we examine the structure of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to jet production observables. We derive a subtraction formalism including double real radiation at tree level and single real radiation at one loop. For two-jet production, these subtraction terms coincide with the full matrix elements, thus highlighting the phase space structure of the subtraction procedure. We then analytically compute the infrared singularities arising from each partonic channel. For the purely virtual (two-parton) NNLO corrections, these take the well known form predicted by Catani's infrared factorization formula. We demonstrate that individual terms in the infrared factorization formula can be identified with infrared singular terms from three- and four-parton final states, leaving only single poles and a contribution from the one-loop soft gluon current, which subsequently cancels between the three- and four-parton final states. Summing over all different final states, we observe an explicit cancellation of all infrared poles and recover the known two-loop correction to the hadronic $R$-ratio.

Progress in NNLO calculations for scattering processes

The various motivations for improving the perturbative prediction to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) for basic scattering processes in proton-(anti)proton, electron-proton and electron-positron scattering are discussed in detail. Recent progress in the field of next-to-next-to-leading order calculations is reviewed.
