Antiproton magnetic moment determined from the HFS of antiprotonic helium

We report a determination of the antiproton magnetic moment, measured in a three-body system, independent of previous experiments. We present results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium where we have achieved a precision more than a factor of 10 better than our first measurement. A comparison between the experimental results and three-body quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations leads to a new value for the antiproton magnetic moment is -2.7862 (83) nuclear magnetons, which agrees with the magnetic moment of the proton within 2.9 x 10e-3.

Measurement of the in-medium K0 inclusive cross section in pi- -induced reactions at 1.15 GeV/c

The K0 meson production by pi- mesons of 1.15 GeV/c momentum on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb nuclear targets was measured with the FOPI spectrometer at the SIS accelerator of GSI. Inclusive production cross-sections and the momentum distributions of K0 mesons are compared to scaled elementary production cross-sections and to predictions of theoretical models describing the in-medium production of kaons. The data represent a new reference for those models, which are widely used for interpretation of the strangeness-production in heavy-ion collisions. The presented results demonstrate the sensitivity of the kaon production to the reaction amplitudes inside nuclei and point to the existence of a repulsive KN-potential of 20+-5 MeV at normal nuclear matter density.

Improved Study of the Antiprotonic Helium Hyperfine Structure

We report the initial results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium (n,l) = (37,~35) carried out at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN. We performed a laser-microwave-laser resonance spectroscopy using a continuous wave (cw) pulse-amplified laser system and microwave cavity to measure the HF transition frequencies. Improvements in the spectral linewidth and stability of our laser system have increased the precision of these measurements by a factor of five and reduced the line width by a factor of three compared to our previous results. A comparison of the experimentally measured transition frequencies with three body QED calculations can be used to determine the antiproton spin magnetic moment, leading towards a test of CPT invariance.

New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)

The Pauli Exclusion Principle is one of the basic principles of modern physics and is at the very basis of our understanding of matter: thus it is fundamental importance to test the limits of its validity. Here we present the VIP (Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle) experiment, where we search for anomalous X-rays emitted by copper atoms in a conductor: any detection of these anomalous X-rays would mark a Pauli-forbidden transition. ] VIP is currently taking data at the Gran Sasso underground laboratories, and its scientific goal is to improve by at least four orders of magnitude the previous limit on the probability of Pauli violating transitions, bringing it into the 10**-29 - 10**-30 region. First experimental results, together with future plans, are presented.

$Λd$ correlations from the $^4$He(stopped-$K^-$,$d$) reaction

We have observed an intense high-energy component in an inclusive $^4$He(stopped $K^-$, $d$) spectrum. For back-to-back $Λd$ pairs a prominent event cluster has been found just below the $m_{^4\textrm{He}}+m_{K^-}-m_{n}$ mass threshold in the $Λd$ invariant mass spectrum of $Λdn$ events, which is evidence for a three-nucleon absorption process of $K^-$ in $^4$He. In addition, an appreciable strength is revealed below $\sim$3220 MeV/$c^2$. Well separated $Σ^0 dn$ events show a peak similar to the case of $Λdn$.

$ΛN$ correlations from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on ${}^4$He

We have investigated correlations of coincident $ΛN$ pairs from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on ${}^4$He, and clearly observed $Λp$ and $Λn$ branches of the two-nucleon absorption process in the $ΛN$ invariant mass spectra. In addition, non-mesonic reaction channels, which indicate possible exotic signals for the formation of strange multibaryon states, have been identified.

Search for strange tribaryon states in the inclusive ^4He(K^{-}_{stopped}, p) reaction

A search for tribaryon states was performed at KEK-PS. We adopted the $^4$He($K^-_{stopped}, p)$ reaction to populate the states with strangeness -1, charge 0 and isospin 1. No significant narrow structure was observed in the mass region from 3000 to 3200 MeV/c^2 in an inclusive missing mass spectrum. The upper limit of the formation branching ratio was determined to be ($1\sim3)\times 10^{-4}$, ($0.7\sim2)\times 10^{-3}$ and ($2\sim8) \times 10^{-3}$/($stopped K^{-}$) with 95 % confidence level for narrow states with an assumed width of 0, 20 and 40 MeV/c^2, respectively.

Precision measurement of the $3d \to 2p$ x-ray energy in kaonic $^4$He

We have measured the Balmer-series x-rays of kaonic $^4$He atoms using novel large-area silicon drift x-ray detectors in order to study the low-energy $\bar{K}$-nucleus strong interaction. The energy of the $3d \to 2p$ transition was determined to be 6467 $\pm$ 3 (stat) $\pm$ 2 (syst) eV. The resulting strong-interaction energy-level shift is in agreement with theoretical calculations, thus eliminating a long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Search for a kaonic nuclear state via $^4$He$(K^-, N)$

Very recently, we have performed a couple of experiments, {\it{KEK PS-E549/E570}}, for the detailed study of the strange tribaryon $S^0(3115)$ obtained in {\it{KEK PS-E471}}. These experiments were performed to accumulate much higher statistics with improved experimental apparatusespecially for the better proton spectroscopy of the $^4$He({\it{stopped K}}$^-$, {\it{N}}) reaction. In contrast to the previous proton spectrum, no narrow ($\sim$ 20 MeV) peak structure was found either in the inclusive $^4$He({\it{stopped K}}$^-$, {\it{p}}) or in the semi-inclusive $^4$He({\it{stopped K}}$^-$, {\it{p}}$X^\pm$) reaction channel, which is equivalent to the previous $E471$ event trigger condition. Detailed analysis of the present data and simulation shows that the peak, corresponding to $S^0(3115)$, has been an experimental artifact. Present analysis does not exclude the possible existence of a much wider structure. To be sensitive to such structure and for better understanding of the non-mesonic $K^-$ absorption reaction channel, detailed analysis of the data is in progress.

Neutron density distributions from antiprotonic 208Pb and 209Bi atoms

The X-ray cascade from antiprotonic atoms was studied for 208Pb and 209Bi. Widths and shifts of the levels due to the strong interaction were determined. Using modern antiproton-nucleus optical potentials the neutron densities in the nuclear periphery were deduced. Assuming two parameter Fermi distributions (2pF) describing the proton and neutron densities the neutron rms radii were deduced for both nuclei. The difference of neutron and proton rms radii /\r_np equal to 0.16 +-(0.02)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 208Pb and 0.14 +- (0.04)_{stat} +- (0.04)_{syst} fm for 209Bi were determined and the assigned systematic errors are discussed. The /\r_np values and the deduced shapes of the neutron distributions are compared with mean field model calculations.

New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) represents one of the basic principles of modern physics and, even if there are no compelling reasons to doubt its validity, it still spurs a lively debate, because an intuitive, elementary explanation is still missing, and because of its unique stand among the basic symmetries of physics. A new limit on the probability that PEP is violated by electrons was estabilished by the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle) Collaboration, using the method of searching for PEP forbidden atomic transitions in copper. The preliminary value, ${1/2}β^{2} \textless 4.5\times 10^{-28}$, represents an improvement of about two orders of magnitude of the previous limit. The goal of VIP is to push this limit at the level of $10^{-30}$.

Phenomenological model of the Kaonic Nuclear Cluster K^-pnn in the ground state

A phenomenological model, proposed for the Kaonic Nuclear Cluster (KNC) K^-pp, is applied to the theoretical analysis of the KNC K^-pnn (or S^0). The theoretical values of the binding energy and the width are equal to epsilon_(S^0) = - 197 MeV and Gamma_(S^0) = 16 MeV. They agree well with the experimental data epsilon^(exp)_(S^0) = - 194.0(+ 1.5/- 4.4) MeV and Gamma^(exp)_(S^0) < 21 MeV} (PLB 597, 263 (2004)) and the theoretical values epsilon_(S^0) = - 191 MeV and Gamma_(S^0) = 13 MeV, obtained by Akaishi and Yamazaki within the potential model approach.

Phenomenological model of the Kaonic Nuclear Cluster K^-pp in the ground state

A phenomenological model is proposed for the analysis of the properties of the Kaonic Nuclear Cluster (KNC) Kpp in its ground state. Inside the KNC K^-pp we describe the relative motion of the protons in the pp pair and the motion of the K^- meson relative to the pp pair in terms of wave functions of 3-dimensional harmonic oscillators. The interaction strength is parameterised in our model by the frequency of the longitudinal oscillation of the K^- meson relative to the pp pair. This parameter was determined with the binding energy and width of the strange baryon Lambda(1405) by assuming that it is a bound state of the K^-p pair. In terms of this interaction strength we calculate the binding energy epsilon_(Kpp) = - 118 MeV, the partial widths of non-pionic decay channels and the total width, Gamma_(Kpp) = 58 MeV. This agrees well with the experimental data by the FINUDA Collaboration (PRL 94, 212303 (2005)): epsilon_exp = - 115(+6/-5) MeV and Gamma_exp = 67(+14/-11) MeV. The discrepancy with the results, obtained by Akaishi and Yamazaki within the potential model approach, is discussed.

VIP: An Experiment to Search for a Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle

The Pauli Exclusion Principle is a basic principle of Quantum Mechanics, and its validity has never been seriously challenged. However, given its fundamental standing, it is very important to check it as thoroughly as possible. Here we describe the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle) experiment, an improved version of the Ramberg and Snow experiment (E. Ramberg and G. Snow, {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 238}, 438 (1990)); VIP has just completed the installation at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, and aims to test the Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons with unprecedented accuracy, down to $β^2/2 \approx 10^{-30} - 10^{-31}$. We report preliminary experimental results and briefly discuss some of the implications of a possible violation.

A search for deeply bound kaonic nuclear states

We have measured proton and neutron energy spectra by stopping negative kaons on liquid helium4. Two distinct peak structures were found on both spectra, which were assigned to the formation of new kinds of strange stribaryons. In this paper, we summarize both results.

Indication of a strange tribaryon S^+ from the ^4He(stopped K^-,n) reaction

We measured the neutron time-of-flight spectrum in the ^4He(stopped K^-, n) reaction by stopping negative kaons in a superfluid helium target. A clear enhancement was observed in the neutron spectrum, which indicates the formation of a strange tribaryon of charge +1 with a mass and width of M = 3141 +/- 3 (stat.) +4/-1 (sys.) MeV/c^2 and G < 23 MeV/c^2. This state, denoted as S^+(3140), is about 25 MeV/c^2 higher than the previously observed S^0(3115) T=1.

A Facility for Low-energy Antiproton and Ion Research

The future accelerator facility for beams of ions and antiprotons at Darmstadt will provide antiproton beams of intensities that are two orders of magnitude higher than currently available. Within the foreseen scheme, antiprotons can be decelerated to 30 MeV. The low-energy antiproton community has recently formed a users group to make use of this opportunity to create a next-generation low-energy antiproton facility called FLAIR, which will be able to provide cooled antiproton beams well below 100 keV kinetic energy. This talk gives an overview of the layout and physics program of the proposed facility.
