An Effective Field Theory for Large Oscillons

We consider oscillons - localized, quasiperiodic, and extremely long-living classical solutions in models with real scalar fields. We develop their effective description in the limit of large size at finite field strength. Namely, we note that nonlinear long-range field configurations can be described by an effective complex field $ψ(t, \boldsymbol{x})$ which is related to the original fields by a canonical transformation. The action for $ψ$ has the form of a systematic gradient expansion. At every order of the expansion, such an effective theory has a global U(1) symmetry and hence a family of stationary nontopological solitons - oscillons. The decay of the latter objects is a nonperturbative process from the viewpoint of the effective theory. Our approach gives an intuitive understanding of oscillons in full nonlinearity and explains their longevity. Importantly, it also provides reliable selection criteria for models with long-lived oscillons. This technique is more precise in the nonrelativistic limit, in the notable cases of nonlinear, extremely long-lived, and large objects, and also in lower spatial dimensions. We test the effective theory by performing explicit numerical simulations of a $(d+1)$-dimensional scalar field with a plateau potential.

Chaotic solitons in driven sine-Gordon model

Profiles of static solitons in one-dimensional scalar field theory satisfy the same equations as trajectories of a fictitious particle in multidimensional mechanics. We argue that the structure and properties of the solitons are essentially different if the respective mechanical motions are chaotic. This happens in multifield models and models with spatially dependent potential. We illustrate our findings using one-field sine-Gordon model in external Dirac comb potential. First, we show that the number of different "chaotic" solitons grows exponentially with their length, and the growth rate is related to the topological entropy of the mechanical system. Second, the field values of stable solitons form a fractal; we compute its box-counting dimension. Third, we demonstrate that the distribution of field values in the fractal is related to the metric entropy of the analogous mechanical system.

Radiative corrections and instability of large Q-Balls

We discuss stability of Q-balls interacting with fermions in theory with small coupling constant g. We argue that for configurations with large global U(1)-charge Q the problem of classical stability becomes more subtle. For example, in model with flat direction there is maximal value of charge for stable solutions with Q~1/g^4. We study origin of additional instability and discuss possible ways to avoid it.

Q-balls in the Wick-Cutkosky model

In the present paper Q-ball solutions in the Wick--Cutkosky model are examined in detail. A remarkable feature of the Wick--Cutkosky model is that it admits analytical treatment for the most part of the analysis of Q-balls, which allows one to use this simple model to demonstrate some peculiar properties of Q-balls. In particular, a method for estimating the binding energy of a Q-ball is proposed. This method is tested on the Wick--Cutkosky model taking into account the well-known results obtained for this model earlier.

Some properties of U(1) gauged Q-balls

In this paper we examine the properties of $U(1)$ gauged Q-balls in two models with different scalar field potentials. The obtained results demonstrate that in the general case $U(1)$ gauged Q-balls possess properties, which differ considerably from those of Q-balls in the nongauged case with the same forms of the scalar field potential. In particular, it is shown that in some cases the charge of $U(1)$ gauged Q-ball can be bounded from above, whereas it is not so for the corresponding nongauged Q-ball. Our conclusions are supported both by analytical considerations and numerical calculations.

Particle-like Q-balls

Usually the charge and the energy of stable Q-balls vary in a wide range or are even unbounded. In the present paper we study an interesting possibility that this range is parametrically small. In this case the spectra of stable Q-balls look similar to the one of free particles.

Theory of $U(1)$ gauged Q-balls revisited

In this paper, the main properties of (3+1)-dimensional $U(1)$ gauged Q-balls are examined. In particular, it is shown that the relation $\frac{dE}{dQ}=ω$ holds for such gauged Q-balls in the general case. As a consequence, it is shown that the well-known estimate for the maximal charge of stable gauged Q-balls was derived by means of an inconsistent procedure and can not be considered as correct. A simple method for obtaining the main characteristics of gauged Q-balls using only the nongauged background solution for the scalar field in the case, when the back-reaction of the gauge field on the scalar field is small and the linearized theory can be used, is proposed. The criteria of applicability of the linearized theory, which do not reduce to the demand of the smallness of the coupling constant, are established. Some interesting properties of gauged Q-balls, as well as the advantages of the proposed method, are demonstrated by the example of two models, admitting, in the linear approximation in the perturbations, exact analytic solutions for gauged Q-balls.

Analytic Q-ball solutions and their stability in a piecewise parabolic potential

Explicit solutions for extended objects of a Q-ball type were found analytically in a model describing complex scalar field with piecewise parabolic potential in (3+1)- and (1+1)-dimensional space-times. Such a potential provides a variety of solutions which were thoroughly examined. It was shown that, depending on the values of the parameters of the model and according to the known stability criteria, there exist stable and unstable solutions. The classical stability of solutions in (1+1)-dimensional space-time was examined in the linear approximation and it was shown explicitly that the spectrum of linear perturbations around some solutions contains exponentially growing modes while it is not so for other solutions.

Constraining neutrino superluminality from searches for sterile neutrino decays

Superluminal neutrinos are expected to lose energy due to bremstrauhlung. It is dominated by e+e--pair production if kinematically allowed. The same signature was used in searches for 3-body decays of hypothetical heavy sterile neutrinos. From the absence of these processes in CERN PS191 and CHARM experiments we set upper limits on the neutrino velocity in the energy range from 0.2 GeV to 280 GeV. Our limits are well below the neutrino velocity favored by the recent OPERA results. For energy-independent neutrino velocity the limits obtained in this paper are stronger than those coming from ICARUS experiment and observations of Supernova SN1987a.

Searching for family-number conserving neutral gauge bosons from extra dimensions

Previous studies have shown how the three generations of the Standard Model fermions can arise from a single generation in more than four dimensions, and how off-diagonal neutral couplings arise for gauge-boson Kaluza-Klein recurrences. These couplings conserve family number in the leading approximation. While an existing example, built on a spherical geometry, suggests a high compactification scale, we conjecture that the overall structure is generic, and work out possible signatures at colliders, compatible with rare decays data.

Flavour violation with a single generation

We calculate probabilities of flavour violating processes mediated by Kalutza-Klein modes of gauge bosons in a model where three generations of the Standard Model fermions arise from a single generation in (5+1) dimensions. We discuss a distinctive feature of the model: while the processes in which the generation number $G$ changes are strongly suppressed, the model is constrained by those with $ΔG=0$, for instance $K\to μ^\pm e^\mp$. The bound on the size of the extra dimensions is $1/R \gtrsim 64$ TeV.

Fermions in the vortex background on a sphere

In 5+1 dimensions, we construct a vortex-like solution on a two-dimensional sphere. We study fermionic zero modes in the background of this solution and relate them to the replication of fermion families in the Standard Model. In particular, using a compactified space removes the need for the difficult localisation of gauge fields, while the present procedure (rather than naive compactification on a disk) also removes spurious fermionic modes.
