Macroscopic random Paschen-Back effect in ultracold atomic gases

We consider spin- and density-related properties of single-particle states in a one-dimensional system with random spin-orbit coupling. We show that the presence of an additional Zeeman field $Δ$ induces both nonlinear spin polarization and delocalization of states localized at $Δ=0$, corresponding to a random macroscopic analogue of the Paschen-Back effect. While the conventional Paschen-Back effect corresponds to a saturated $Δ-$dependence of the spin polarization, here the gradual suppression of the spin-orbit coupling effects by the Zeeman field is responsible both for the spin saturation and delocalization of the particles.

Temporal oscillations of light transmission through dielectric microparticles subjected to optically induced motion

We consider light-induced binding and motion of dielectric microparticles in an optical waveguide that gives rise to a back-action effect such as light transmission oscillating with time. Modeling the particles by dielectric slabs allows us to solve the problem analytically and obtain a rich variety of dynamical regimes both for Newtonian and damped motion. This variety is clearly reflected in temporal oscillations of the light transmission. The characteristic frequencies of the oscillations are within the ultrasound range of the order of $10^{5}$ Hz for micron size particles and injected power of the order of 100 mW. In addition, we consider driven by propagating light dynamics of a dielectric particle inside a Fabry-Perot resonator. These phenomena pave a way for optical driving and monitoring of motion of particles in waveguides and resonators.

Spatial compression of a particle state in a parabolic potential by spin measurements

We propose a scheme for engineering compressed spatial states in a two-dimensional parabolic potential with a spin-orbit coupling by selective spin measurements. This sequence of measurements results in a coordinate-dependent density matrix with probability maxima achieved at a set of lines or at a two dimensional lattice. The resultant probability density depends on the spin-orbit coupling and the potential parameters and allows one to obtain a broad class of localized pure states on demand. The proposed scheme can be realized in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates.

Vortex solitons in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates: effects of the Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling and the Zeeman splitting

We present an analysis of two-dimensional (2D) matter-wave solitons, governed by the pseudo-spinor system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with self- and cross-attraction, which includes the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the general Rashba-Dresselhaus form, and, separately, the Rashba coupling and the Zeeman splitting. Families of semi-vortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) solitons are constructed, which exist and are stable in free space, as the SOC terms prevent the onset of the critical collapse and create the otherwise missing ground states in the form of the solitons. The Dresselhaus SOC produces a destructive effect on the vortex solitons, while the Zeeman term tends to convert the MM states into the SV ones, which eventually suffer delocalization. Existence domains and stability boundaries are identified for the soliton families. For physically relevant parameters of the SOC system, the number of atoms in the 2D solitons is limited by $\sim 1.5\times 10^{4}$. The results are obtained by means of combined analytical and numerical methods.

Longitudinal spin-relaxation of donor-bound electrons in direct bandgap semiconductors

We measure the donor-bound electron longitudinal spin-relaxation time ($T_1$) as a function of magnetic field ($B$) in three high-purity direct-bandgap semiconductors: GaAs, InP, and CdTe, observing a maximum $T_1$ of $1.4~\text{ms}$, $0.4~\text{ms}$ and $1.2~\text{ms}$, respectively. In GaAs and InP at low magnetic field, up to $\sim2~\text{T}$, the spin-relaxation mechanism is strongly density and temperature dependent and is attributed to the random precession of the electron spin in hyperfine fields caused by the lattice nuclear spins. In all three semiconductors at high magnetic field, we observe a power-law dependence ${T_1 \propto B^{-ν}}$ with ${3\lesssim ν\lesssim 4}$. Our theory predicts that the direct spin-phonon interaction is important in all three materials in this regime in contrast to quantum dot structures. In addition, the "admixture" mechanism caused by Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling combined with single-phonon processes has a comparable contribution in GaAs. We find excellent agreement between high-field theory and experiment for GaAs and CdTe with no free parameters, however a significant discrepancy exists for InP.

Spin evolution of cold atomic gases in SU(2)$\otimes $U(1) fields

We consider response function and spin evolution in spin-orbit coupled cold atomic gases in a synthetic gauge magnetic field influencing solely the orbital motion of atoms. We demonstrate that various regimes of spin-orbit coupling strength, magnetic field, and disorder can be treated within a single approach based on the representation of atomic motion in terms of auxiliary collective classical trajectories. Our approach allows for a unified description of fermionic and bosonic gases.

Spin dynamics of hopping electrons in quantum wires: algebraic decay and noise

We study theoretically spin decoherence and intrinsic spin noise in semiconductor quantum wires caused by an interplay of electron hopping between the localized states and the hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins. At a sufficiently low density of localization sites the hopping rates have an exponentially broad distribution. It allows the description of the spin dynamics in terms of closely-situated "pairs" of sites and single "reaching" states, from which the series of hops result in the electron localized inside a "pair". The developed analytical model and numerical simulations demonstrate disorder-dependent algebraic tails in the spin decay and power-law singularity-like features in the low-frequency part of the spin noise spectrum.

Shaped electric fields for fast optimal manipulation of electron spin and position in a double quantum dot

We use quantum optimal control theory algorithms to design external electric fields that drive the coupled spin and orbital dynamics of an electron in a double quantum dot, subject to the spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman magnetic fields. We obtain time-profiles of multi-frequency electric pulses which increase the rate of spin-flip transitions by several orders of magnitude in comparison with monochromatic fields, where the spin Rabi oscillations were predicted to be very slow. This precise, with the accuracy higher than $10^{-4}$, and fast, at the timescale of the order of 0.1 ns, simultaneous control of the electron spin orientation and position is achieved while keeping the electron in the four lowest tunneling- and Zeeman-split levels through the duration of the pulse, facilitating high fidelity and suggesting useful applications in spintronics and quantum information devices.

Dynamics of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a random potential

Disorder plays a crucial role in spin dynamics in solids and condensed matter systems. We demonstrate that for a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a random potential two mechanisms of spin evolution, that can be characterized as "precessional" and "anomalous", are at work simultaneously. The precessional mechanism, typical for solids, is due to the condensate displacement. The unconventional "anomalous" mechanism is due to the spin-dependent velocity producing the distribution of the condensate spin polarization. The condensate expansion is accompanied by a random displacement and fragmentation, where it becomes sparse, as clearly revealed in the spin dynamics. Thus, different stages of the evolution can be characterized by looking at the condensate spin.

Dynamics of a macroscopic spin qubit in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a macroscopic spin qubit based on spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where, in addition to the spin-orbit coupling, spin dynamics strongly depends on the interaction between particles. The evolution of the spin for freely expanding, trapped, and externally driven condensates is investigated. For condensates oscillating at the frequency corresponding to the Zeeman splitting in the synthetic magnetic field, the spin Rabi frequency does not depend on the interaction between the atoms since it produces only internal forces and does not change the total momentum. However, interactions and spin-orbit coupling bring the system into a mixed spin state, where the total spin is inside rather than on the Bloch sphere. This greatly extends the available spin space making it three-dimensional, but imposes limitations on the reliable spin manipulation of such a macroscopic qubit. The spin dynamics can be modified by introducing suitable spin-dependent initial phases, determined by the spin-orbit coupling, in the spinor wave function.

Collapse of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

A finite-size quasi two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate collapses if the attraction between atoms is sufficiently strong. Here we present a theory of collapse for condensates with the interatomic attraction and spin-orbit coupling. We consider two realizations of spin-orbit coupling: the axial Rashba coupling and balanced, effectively one-dimensional, Rashba-Dresselhaus one. In both cases spin-dependent "anomalous" velocity, proportional to the spin-orbit coupling strength, plays a crucial role. For the Rashba coupling, this velocity forms a centrifugal component in the density flux opposite to that arising due to the attraction between particles and prevents the collapse at a sufficiently strong coupling. For the balanced Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling, the spin-dependent velocity can spatially split the initial state in one dimension and form spin-projected wavepackets, reducing the total condensate density. Depending on the spin-orbit coupling strength, interatomic attraction, and the initial state, this splitting either prevents the collapse or modifies the collapse process. These results show that the collapse can be controlled by a spin-orbit coupling, thus, extending the domain of existence of condensates of attracting atoms.

Enhanced photogalvanic effect in graphene due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We analyze theoretically optical generation of a spin-polarized charge current (photogalvanic effect) and spin polarization in graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. An external magnetic field is applied in the graphene plane, which plays a crucial role in the mechanism of current generation. We predict a highly efficient resonant-like photogalvanic effect in a narrow frequency range which is determined by the magnetic field. A relatively less efficient photogalvanic effect appears in a broader frequency range, determined by the electron concentration and spin-orbit coupling strength.

Dynamics of optically injected currents in carbon nanotubes

We consider theoretically the dynamics of electric currents optically injected in carbon nanotubes. Although the plasma oscillations are not seen in these systems, the main effect on the carrier's motion is due to strongly nonuniform space-charge Coulomb forces produced by time-dependent separation of injected electron and hole densities. We calculate evolution of the dipole moment characterizing the time- and coordinate-dependent charge density distributions and analyze different regimes of the dynamics. The developed time-dependent dipole moment leads to a dipole radiation in the THz frequency range for typical parameters of injected currents.

Interference of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Interference of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, observed in free expansion experiments, is a basic characteristic of their quantum nature. The ability to produce synthetic spin-orbit coupling in Bose-Einstein condensates has recently opened a new research field. Here we theoretically describe interference of two noninteracting spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in an external synthetic magnetic field. We demonstrate that the spin-orbit and the Zeeman couplings strongly influence the interference pattern determined by the angle between the spins of the condensates, as can be seen in time-of-flight experiments. We show that a quantum backflow, being a subtle feature of the interference, is, nevertheless, robust against the spin-orbit coupling and applied synthetic magnetic field.

Spin measurements and control of cold atoms using spin-orbit fields

We show that by switching on a spin-orbit interaction in a cold-atom system, experiencing a Zeeman-like coupling to an external field, e.g., in a Bose-Einstein condensate, one can simulate a quantum measurement on a precessing spin. Depending on the realization, the measurement can access both the ergodic and the Zeno regimes, while {the time dependence} of the spin's decoherence may vary from a Gaussian to an inverse fractional power law. Back action of the measurement forms time- and coordinate-dependent profiles of the atoms' density, resulting in its translation, spin-dependent fragmentation, and appearance of interference patterns.

Optical spin injection in graphene with Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We calculate the efficiency of infrared optical spin injection in single-layer graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and for in-plane magnetic field. The injection rate in the photon frequency range corresponding to the Rashba splitting is shown to be proportional to the ratio of the Zeeman and Rashba splittings. As a result, large spin polarization can be controllably achieved for experimentally available values of the spin-orbit coupling and in magnetic fields below 10 Tesla.

Von Neumann spin measurements with Rashba fields

We show that dynamics in spin-orbit coupling field simulates the von Neumann measurement of a particle spin. We demonstrate how the measurement influences the spin and coordinate evolution of a particle by comparing two examples of such a procedure. First example is a simultaneous measurement of spin components, $σ_{x}$ and $σ_{y}$, corresponding to non-commuting operators, which cannot be accurately obtained together at a given time instant due to the Heisenberg uncertainty ratio. By mapping spin dynamics onto a spatial walk such a procedure determines measurement-time averages of $σ_{x}$ and $σ_{y}$, which already can be precisely evaluated in a single short-time measurement. The other, qualitatively different, example is the spin of a one-dimensional particle in a magnetic field. Here the outcome depends on the angle between the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic fields. These results can be applied to studies of spin-orbit coupled cold atoms and electrons in solids.

Position and Spin Control by Dynamical Ultrastrong Spin-Orbit Coupling

Focusing on the efficient probe and manipulation of single-particle spin states, we investigate the coupled spin and orbital dynamics of a spin 1/2 particle in a harmonic potential subject to ultrastrong spin-orbit interaction and external magnetic field. The advantage of these systems is the clear visualization of the strong spin-orbit coupling in the orbital dynamics. We also investigate the effect of a time-dependent coupling: Its nonadiabatic change causes an interesting interplay of spin and orbital motion which is related to the direction and magnitude of the applied magnetic field. This result suggests that orbital state manipulation can be realized through ultrastrong spin-orbit interactions, becoming a useful tool for handling entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom to produce, for example, spin desirable polarizations in time interesting for spintronics implementations.
